eggy Ann Dembowski, senior vice president, cashier and trust officer for Amboy Bank, has celebrated her 60th anniversary with the company. Dembowski, a resident of Sayreville, joined the bank in June 1960 in the accounting department and has continued to assume increased responsibilities over the years, culminating in being approved as a senior vice president by the Board of Directors, according to information provided by Amboy Bank. “Peggy Dembowski has been invaluable to Amboy Bank during her remarkable career. She has always been willing to fill a need, lead by example, and represent
what Amboy is for generations of clients and associates,” said Greg Scharpf, Amboy Bank president and CEO, in the statement. “Peggy has been, and continues to be, a dedicated employee and a friend and mentor to so many at Amboy.” A graduate of St. Mary’s High School in South Amboy, she holds an associate’s degree in accounting from Marywood College and holds certifications in many banking areas. Ten years ago, the Amboy Bank Board of Directors adopted June 10 as “Peggy Ann Dembowski Day” in honor of her 50th anniversary with Amboy.

ith the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic preventing traditional graduation ceremonies, the Sayreville School District held ceremonies at the graduating seniors’ homes on June 8 and 9. Superintendent of Schools Richard Labbe affirmed that the Sayreville War Memorial High School Class of 2020 received individual in-person graduation ceremonies at each graduate’s residence on June 8 or 9, where they were allowed to have up to 22 friends and family members present. Photos from the ceremonies were then included in a virtual ceremony that included pre-taped speeches. It was livestreamed on June 11. The school district’s action follows the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, which has led to traditional graduation ceremonies being prohibited by the state. According to the state, in-person commencement ceremonies are not allowed until July 6 and must be outdoors and meet the relevant capacity limitation on in-person gatherings in place at the time of the ceremony. In his letter on May 30, Labbe stated that the district considered holding a ceremony after July 6, but found the social distancing requirements stipulated to render any normal graduation ceremony nearly impossible, particularly because only 25 people are currently allowed to gather at an outdoor event at once. “Even if that number [25] were to quadruple by then to 100 people, counting staff and at least two parents per child, we would only be able to graduate 25 students at a time and would need to repeat the ceremony – in which we would be prohibited from handing diplomas to students – at least 20 times,” Labbe wrote. “Of course,
we could graduate more children than that if we excluded parents, which they [state officials] actually encouraged in the guidance. Can you ever imagine holding a high school graduation ceremony without parents? We cannot and will not. “Nonetheless, even if the allowable social gathering capacity number increased to 500 people by then, we would only be able to graduate 150 students at a time and would need to hold at least three ceremonies,” he continued. “Even if the number increased to 1,000 people – which is highly unlikely – counting two parents for each student and the minimum amount of staff required to safely hold a ceremony, we would need to hold two separate ceremonies. “In fact, in order to hold a ceremony with the entire Class 2020 present, the allowable social gathering number would need to be at least 1,500 people. Furthermore, in order to hold that ceremony with up to four guests per student, it would need to be 3,000 and 5,000 if we were to hold a normal graduation ceremony.” As a result of these factors, Labbe explained that district administrators would continue with their plan to provide in-person graduation ceremonies to the outgoing seniors. “While I know that this news will be disappointing to many of our graduates and their parents, please understand that we must focus first and foremost on what we can do now to recognize and honor our amazing students who have been through so much, rather than take a risk on what we could possibly be able to do in the future, especially when our governor and the NJDOE [Department of Education] have clearly demonstrated the inability to make a firm decision on this matter,” the superintendent wrote.

Middlesex County College president to Class of 2020: Pandemic will pass, time spent at MCC is for life By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer
I
n a moving 48-minute video, Middlesex County College recognized its Class of 2020 with as much virtual pomp and circumstance as it could. “Wish we all could have been here to cheer each other and pose for happy photos as we walk across the stage, but I guess we have to graduate this way so everyone can stay safe,” Valedictorian Nirali Trivedi, of Edison, said in the video. Trivedi delivered the class welcome during Middlesex County College’s (MCC) 53rd commencement on May 21, which was held virtually due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. This is the first time the college has held a commencement strictly online. The pre-recorded video is on MCC’s website, which takes the graduates through the 2019-20 school year from student orientation to learning remotely after spring break. One video featured speakers Middlesex County Freeholder Director Ronald Rios, who urged the class to use the experience they gained at MCC to do great things and to make community service an important part of their lives; Dorothy K. Power, chairman of the College Board of Trustees, who asked the class to share their gifts with others; and U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-New Jersey), who reminded the class that while they can’t always control circumstances, they can control the way they react to them. Another video featured many graduates who shared their stories. The valedictorian shared her experiences and aspirations of becoming a doctor. Trivedi, a double major in biology and chemistry, is headed to Rutgers University in the fall where she will major in environmental and biological sciences. She emigrated to the United States from India. “I came to the United States for the first time just two months prior to attending MCC, and now I plan to spend the rest of my life here,” she said. Trivedi, who received a scholarship

from the MCC Foundation, recognized several professors for their support, inspiration and mentorship: Virender Kanwal, Janet Lansinger, Erin Christensen, Phalguni Ghosh and Brian Lavey. “All of us will move on to the next adventures of our lives,” she told the class. “But one thing we share will be our belonging to the MCC community, the values we learned, the help we received, and the educational foundation we built here. I hope we will continue to provide support and encouragement for each other in future endeavors.” The global pandemic cannot take away the successful graduation of the 1,588 MCC students. “I hope you look back at your time at MCC and are able to see beyond what you are missing right now and remember all experienced and learned,” MCC President Mark McCormick said. “The pandemic will pass, but what you gain at MCC will be with you for life.” Samantha Milano-Sumalinog, a 2016 MCC graduate and the college’s 2020

Alumna of the Year, said it is not a time for the graduates to be modest. “You are a college graduate, the world cannot take that away from you, coronavirus cannot take that away from you, the president of the United States cannot take that away from you,” she said. Milano-Sumalinog said she understands if graduates are wary with the many uncertainties in the world. “I know things look a little scary especially for people transferring [to other colleges], even scarier for those planning to enter the uncertain job market, but you already beat the odds once, why should a global pandemic get in your way … go out there and run the world,” she said. The salutatorian, Jordan Gutierrez, of the Avenel section of Woodbridge, studied liberal arts and business at MCC. He will transfer to the Rutgers University Business School in the fall to major in business analytics and information technology. “My time at MCC will always be cherished as I was given the best opportunities for success,” he said. “The foundation for

my education could not have been set up any better. The people I’ve met these two past years, I’ve formed bonds with that I will carry on for a lifetime. Overall, it was an unforgettable experience being an MCC student.” The virtual ceremony included acknowledging Chambers Award winners. The award, named for the MCC’s founding president, Frank Chambers, recognizes those graduates who have obtained the highest grade point average while at the college. The Chambers Award winners include Trivedi, Gutierrez, Andrew Aerni, of New Brunswick, Zev Benedek, of Highland Park, Julia Block, of Sayreville, Arianna Burgman, of Monroe Township, Emily Collado, of Perth Amboy, Brian Crespo, of Edison, Christine Desa, of Sayreville, Joseph DeToro, of Parlin, Andrew Fischer, of Parlin, Thomas Kozma, of South River, Dorota Matracz, of Metuchen, Andrew Popow, of North Brunswick, Trisha Mae Quiminiano, of Clinton, Farrah Rahman, of Middlesex Borough, Kyra Raye, of Edison, Donald Su, of East Brunswick, Edgardo Torres-Muniz, of Ewing, and Alexandria Wonski, of Metuchen. All graduates will receive a gift box containing a diploma cover, a copy of the commencement program, a special gift, a tassel, and a message from the president and alumni association.

Old Bridge adjusts as restrictions on dining, parks relax By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer
OLD BRIDGE – In an effort to support and assist local businesses, Old Bridge has established a Business Advisory Committee led by the township’s Office of Economic Development, which will work directly with the township’s business community. The township is now accepting temporary permit applications for outdoor dining, which Gov. Phil Murphy announced would reopen June 15. Township officials and the Township Council discussed the creation of a temporary permit process for outdoor seating through Labor Day to help speed up the process at a meeting on May 4. The council approved the creation of the temporary permit process and waived the $95 permit fee. Veena Sawant, township planner, said in 2018, the council adopted an ordinance for outdoor dining, which capped the number of outdoor seating at eight. If a restaurant wanted to have more than eight outdoor dining seats, it would prompt a planning and zoning review.
Sawant said with a temporary permit process each application will be evaluated thoroughly to ensure the health and safety of the residents and to ensure it does not hinder overall circulation of the location. The township has canceled all 2020 summer camp programs with the health and well-being of campers in mind. Old Bridge’s largest parks, Veterans, Geick and Mannino, and Lombardi Field Track are open daily for passive recreation from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. The township has also reopened four tennis courts at the Municipal Complex. The courts are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily and players are asked to limit their court time to no more than one hour. Three of the courts will be dedicated for tennis and the fourth will be for pickleball only. Signs will be posted on the fence indicating which courts are open and for which activity. Two tennis courts at Carl Sandburg Middle School are also open. The Bark dog park at Mannino Park has reopened. There will be a five dog limit in each area. The Old Bridge Food Bank is seeking donations. Two bins are set up outside at 1
Old Bridge Plaza for non-perishable food donations for collections on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon. Monetary donations in the form of checks can be mailed to Old Bridge Food Bank, 1 Old Bridge Food Bank. The Old Bridge Township Office of Emergency Management is still seeking supplies to support township police, fire and first aid, including N95 masks, surgical masks, Tyvek suits, hand sanitizer and Clorox wipes. Anyone able to donate supplies can call OEM Deputy Coordinator Mike Petschauer at 848-565-1324 or email mpetschauer@oldbridge.com. Members of Old Bridge Policemen’s Benevolent Association (PBA) Local 127 have assisted various families going through extraordinarily hard times during the pandemic. Many of the stories are shared on PBA Local 127’s social media page. Recently, members became aware of one those families through friends who reached out to PBA member Steve McCauley and asked for some assistance for 11-year-old Jonathon Kramer. Jonathon suffers from Angelman syndrome, which is a genetic disorder causing developmental disabilities and nerve-relat-
ed symptoms. Local 127 members assisted the Kramer family with the purchase of a pediatric wheelchair for Jonathon and also assisted in paying off some of their expenses for home improvements, which included the construction of a handicap bathroom and safety locks throughout the residence for Jonathon’s safety. Unfortunately, with all the precautions during the pandemic, members of Local 127 weren’t able to visit the Kramer family until May 30. PBA members also recognized Mark Glazier, president of Nutrabio, for providing each member with their immune system support product called First Response on June 7. Nutrabio has donated its product nationwide to help keep first responders as healthy as possible during the pandemic. For more information visit https://www. nutrabio.com/firstresponse/. County encourages voting by mail for primary election
M
iddlesex County is promoting its vote by mail initiative for the upcoming primary election. In previous years, Middlesex County has mailed vote by mail applications in August for the general election, according to information provided by the county. With the COVID-19 pandemic impacting elections, the county has committed to sending applications during the primary election in order to encourage safe and responsible participation in the election, according to the statement
“The Board of Chosen Freeholders encourages all our residents to be heard while staying safe this voting season by signing up for vote by mail. Our county’s program is among the most accessible in the state – we mail the application and we also include the postage for the application and the ballot at no cost to our residents. In this way, Middlesex County is enabling more people to vote while remaining in the comfort of their homes,” Middlesex County Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios said in a prepared statement.
New Jersey law states that any registered voter is eligible to apply for the vote by mail program, for any reason and for any election. In order to vote in this year’s primary election on July 7 residents simply complete a Vote By Mail application and return it to the county clerk’s office no later than seven days prior to an election date. No postage is required; the application and the ballot envelope that voters receive will be prepaid. Once the clerk’s office receives the application, a ballot is sent to the resident for the election. Once a ballot is com-

pleted and submitted, the vote is counted, eliminating the need to visit polls during this crisis. “Your vote is your voice and is one that can be exercised regardless of the current crisis. Applying for a Vote by Mail application now means that none of us has to anticipate whether social distancing requirements will be lifted in time for us to vote in person at the polls this July,” Middlesex County Clerk Elaine Flynn said in the statement. All Middlesex County voters who are not currently registered to receive Vote by Mail ballots will receive an application in the mail in the coming weeks. To receive a ballot for this July’s primary election, the application must be received by June 30. COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD The National Purple Heart Honor Mission is opening the nomination process for its 2021 Purple Heart Patriot Project. One Purple Heart recipient and an escort of their choosing from each state and territory will again be selected for an allexpenses-paid tribute filled with tours and ceremonies honoring their service and that of all those who have earned the Purple Heart. The four-day Patriot Project Mission will feature visits to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, historic Washington’s headquarters where the Badge of Military Merit originated in 1782, and a private tour of the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor – the museum dedicated to paying tribute to our nation’s combat wounded. Other special tribute events are also being planned. Anyone can nominate a Purple Heart recipient they know. Nominations must include a short description (up to 250 words) of why their nominee is deserving of this special recognition. Submissions can be sent via email to Info@PurpleHeartMission.org or submitted via www.purpleheartmission.org/patriot-project. Nominations will be accepted until Aug. 31. The Honor Mission will select three finalists from each state and territory and a national panel of Purple Heart recipients and other distinguished Americans will select the final honorees. A complete list of honorees will be announced nationally on Nov. 11, Veterans Day. Sayreville Day is currently planned for Sept. 12, with a rain date of Sept. 19, at Kennedy Park. Resident Gail Thompson is organizing a group of 10 handcrafters and artists who
will demonstrate what they create to the public. Each person should display a different craft, such as pottery, hand embroidery, origami, jewelry, drawing, painting and nature weaving. The purpose is to encourage people to appreciate and admire handcrafted items and learn how to do a simple craft. There will be no fee to exhibit, but no sales are allowed. For more information, contact Thompson at quilt23lady@gmail.com or 732234-6194 by the end of June.  The 4-H clubs of Middlesex County will offer Social Distance Front Porch Portraits. Sessions will be scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. through June 30. Call 732398-5261 to make an appointment or to schedule a different time. The cost is $15 per session, within Middlesex County. ON THE ROAD PETER PERROTTA
2020 Ford Ranger XLT Supercrew 4X4
A
t one time, the Ford Ranger pickup truck was the best selling compact truck in the United States. In fact, the Ranger dominated that segment for 17 years, from 1987 to 2004. That is a pretty impressive run. However, even the best of sluggers reach their tipping point – as age sets it. So, when sales started to lag and consumers drifted towards the larger F-150 model and other SUVs, the folks at Ford retired Peter Perrotta the Ranger pickup line from 2012-18. Last year, Ford brought back a totally redesigned Ranger that recaptures some of the nostalgic feel and look of the previous Ranger line and adds some of the modern day technological updates. I recently jumped behind the wheel of the 2020 Ford Ranger XLT Supercrew 4X4 for one week to get a first hand look at how the resurrection of the one time sales leader went. Overall, I like the look of the XLT Supercrew. It’s not overly large and has a rugged aggressive stance. My tester came equipped with the FX4 off road package and a black appearance package, so it had a very “tough guy” stance. Inside, the ergonomics – while not overly fancy – were adequate for a pickup truck. “I like how they kept it simple in here,” my 21-year-old son said. The Ranger comes in three models – the XL, XLT and the Lariat – but is only offered with one engine – a 2.3 liter, in line four cylinder engine with ecoboost that puts out 270 horsepower at 5,500 rpm. They marry that engine with an efficient
2020 Ford Ranger XLT Supercrew 4X4
electronic 10-speed automatic transmission. The powerplant/transmission combination is one of the most impressive features of the new Ranger. I found that it accelerated and shifted smoothly and was a more than able performer in city driving and out on the highway. More impressive are all the various selections for the drivetrain. From the center console gear shifter, you can select either regular “drive” or drop in down a notch into the “sport” mode for a little extra oomph. Next to the gear selector, is a transfer case selector where you can chose from two-wheel rear drive to four-wheel high for normal inclement weather or fourwheel low when you need to get down and dirty into some rough off-road terrain. Moreover, another impressive feature is the terrain mode selector that allows the driver to chose from normal conditions to, mud, sand, snow and ice. All these features make the Ranger a very impressive offroad performer. The one area where I would have to point out that I feel the Ranger needs a bit of improvement in is in the suspension sys-
SUBMITTED PHOTO
tem. For off-road and even highway driving, I found the Ranger’s suspension and ride to be quite impressive. However, on simple little daily driving matters – like absorbing routine road bumps – I felt the Ranger’s more traditional pickup suspension left something to be desired. The editors at Consumer Reports called the ride of the Ranger “stiff and choppy” with “clumsy” handling at low speeds. I would add a qualifier to that. I found the Ranger to only be a bit stiff and choppy going over bumps at low speeds. I didn’t think the overall handling was clumsy at all. The 2020 Ranger XLT Supercrew I road tested carried a base sticker price of $34,635. However, after adding in options and $1,195 for destination and delivery, the MSRP sticker price of my test vehicle was $42,410. The options included: $2,450 for the XLT equipment package that includes a sliding rear window with a defroster and a remote start; $995 for the technology package; $1,090 for the black appearance package; $1,295 for the FX4 off road package
with locking differential; $495 for the trailer tow package and $160 for a floor liner. The technology package included adaptive cruise control, a forward sensing system and navigation. The black appearance package includes 18-inch black painted aluminum wheels, spray in bed liner, and running boards. The government’s EPA fuel ratings system comes in at an overall 22 miles per gallon – 24 mpg in highway driving and 20 in city driving. The EPA estimates than annual average fuel cost for driving this model to be $1,850 – as it uses about 4.5 gallons of gas per every 100 miles driven. The government’s five star safety ratings for crash test gives the Ranger an overall four-star rating. On the frontal crash test it received five stars for the driver and four for the passenger. For the side crash test it got five stars for both the front and rear seat tests. And, it got a three-star rating on the rollover test. On the inside I found the Rangers controls and infotainment system fairly easy to use. The touch screen and voice controlled system for navigations, phone and music were not difficult to master. The Ranger Supercrew has ample interior room in both the front seats and the two rear seats in the back of the cab. However, it doesn’t feature a full-sized bed. Instead, similar to the Jeep Gladiator, this Ranger comes with a compact five-foot bed. If you are thinking about using the Ranger for a full work load truck, it may not fit the bill for that. However, the bed was more than ample for carrying a couple of bikes and some fishing gear on a recent outing. Overall, if you are considering a compact pickup, you would be remiss not to add the Ranger to your list for consideration.
Peter Perrotta’s On The Road column appears weekly. Questions, comments and suggestions are welcomed. He can be reached at peter@capitalmotorcars.com.
