Both parties’ candidates will run unopposed in Sayreville primary By MATTHEW SOCKOL Staff Writer

T

he names of two Democrats and two Republicans will appear on the July 7 primary ballot to seek available three-year terms on the Sayreville Borough Council in November. According to information provided by the Middlesex County Clerk’s Office, Republicans Karen Bailey Bebert and Danielle Zaleski are looking to challenge incumbent Democrats Vince Conti and Mary Novak for two available three-year seats on Sayreville’s governing body, while Conti and Novak seek to retain their positions on the council. Both parties’ candidates are running unopposed in their own primaries. The Democratic and Republican candidates on the primary ballots will be expected to face each other in the general election on Nov. 3. Bebert and Zaleski are making their first bids for Borough Council. According to information provided by the Sayreville Republican Organization, they are both lifelong Sayreville residents and graduates

of Sayreville War Memorial High School. Novak, who holds the position of council president in 2020, first served on the council from 1995 to 2000 before rejoining in 2012 and is the longest-serving member of the governing body. Conti was appointed to the governing body this year to complete a one-year, unexpired term, and is seeking his first full three-year term on the Borough Council. Democrats hold a 5-1 majority on the Borough Council and the mayor’s office. Due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the primary election will mostly be conducted by vote by mail. After Sayreville voters receive their vote by mail ballot from the county and fill it out, they may mail their ballot from their home, drop it off at the Middlesex County Board of Elections in East Brunswick, or deliver it to a drop box location, according to the county. According to the county, some polling places will be open on the day of the primary, but voters will only be able to cast their ballots in person through a provisional paper ballot.

Sayreville War Memorial alum host peaceful protest in Sayreville By MATTHEW SOCKOL Staff Writer

S

ayreville played host to more than 400 individuals participating in a peaceful protest on June 6 to make their feelings against racism and police brutality known. Organized by Kiera Brown, Erene Olson and Aaliyah Wideman, all borough residents and graduates of Sayreville War Memorial High School, the protest began at 12:30 p.m. at Borough Hall on Main Street, and continued throughout the mu-

nicipality. Protestors held up signs supporting racial equality and remembering lives lost due to police brutality. A table was also set up to allow participants to register to vote if they currently were unable to do so. Participants could also take wristbands displaying the “Black Lives Matter” message. The event followed the May 25 arrest of George Floyd, a 46-year-old black resident of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Video of the arrest shows a white police officer, Derek Chauvin, pressing his knee to Floyd’s

neck for almost nine minutes. Floyd was handcuffed and was face down in the street during the time Chauvin was astride him. Floyd died during the incident and Chauvin has been charged with second degree murder. Three other officers who were at the scene of Floyd’s arrest have been charged with aiding and abetting second degree murder. In addition to Floyd, the protest remembered the lives of other African Americans who died under violent circumstances this year, including Ahmaud Arbery and Bre-

onna Taylor. The Sayreville Police Department provided support to the event, stating prior to June 6 that officers had been coordinating the event with its organizers to ensure the safety of those participating. During the event, the police guarded the protestors’ route and the department’s command staff participated in the march. “Throughout the past several days, residents from all across America have demonstrated their First Amendment rights (Continued on page 6)

Students in Old Bridge High School Class of 2020 celebrate milestones By KATHY CHANG

Staff Writer

S

tudents of the Old Bridge High School (OBHS) Class of 2020 are celebrating stolen milestones as best they can, in piecemeal. On June 11, OBHS senior Olivia Pospisil and her friends gathered outside her home in their caps and gowns for the community applaud of the graduating seniors. Buses with banners “OBHS Applauds Our Graduates” traveled to 20 different locations including Olivia’s neighborhood and honked their horns. Olivia and her friends threw their hands up as well as their caps. OBHS Vice Principal Sally Fazio joined in on the fun with a sign “Fazio loves (drawn heart) You” and took photos/ videos with the graduates. Milestones of prom and graduation are still on the Old Bridge School District’s calendar on the district’s website – OBHS prom on June 12 and OBHS graduation on June 23. The two occasions have been canceled due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. With Gov. Phil Murphy’s announcement to allow 500 people to gather outdoors on July 3 and to allow in-person graduations after July 6, school officials have been coming together to plan what is best for the approximately 750-member OBHS 2020 class. Fazio said they plan to hold four separate graduation ceremonies on July 8 and July 9 on Lombardi Field. The graduation normally is held at the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel. Murphy lifted the state’s stay-at-home order on June 9, which went into effect on March 21, and also increased limits on the number of people who can gather indoors from 10 to 50 people or 25% of a building’s capacity and 25 to 100 people outdoors. The numbers of people allowed to gather outdoors will increase to 250 people on June 22 and 500 people on July 3. On June 12 – the night of the scheduled prom, which would have been held at The Addison Park in Keyport – Patrice Tranchina planned a “Prom at Home” for her son, Matthew, and his friends with prom 2020 trinkets and knickknacks. Tranchina said Matthew is her youngest child and he saw his siblings enjoy their milestones – Jeffrey in 2011, Justin in 2013, and Jessica in 2016. She said at first her son was against the idea when she suggested it in April, but as the prom date neared, he warmed up to it. Matthew and his friends enjoyed taking

photos in their prom attire including corsages for the girls, food, a live prom DJ through Zoom, and pool time in the backyard. Fazio stopped by to see the graduates for their special “Prom at Home” night. In continued efforts to celebrate the Class of 2020, Schools Superintendent David Cittadino planned an #OBBannerDay on May 9 to create new memories for the class. He booked a New Jersey aviation company to fly over the township with a banner “OB Schools We Miss Our Kids (and hear) the 2020 Class. Stay Well.”

Teachers plan ‘pizza parties’ for Samsel students By MATTHEW SOCKOL Staff Writer

SAYREVILLE – To recognize the hard work and dedication of their fifth grade pupils during the coronavirus pandemic, three teachers at the Samsel Upper Elementary School (SUES) in Sayreville rewarded the pupils with a pizza party. Pizza kits from J&S Pizza, South Amboy, were delivered to the 49 fifth grade pupils of teachers Dawn Schwartz, Gineen Morosco and Alysse Darrow at the start

of June as a reward for their work amid the coronavirus. Due to the pandemic, the pupils were unable to physically attend school and all instruction was conducted remotely to their homes. “This online learning experience has been so stressful, not only for educators, but for the students and parents as well,” Schwartz said. “I wanted my students to know how much we missed them and that I was proud of their perseverance and grit in completing their work. We needed a chance for everyone to get together and

celebrate that. “In our Google Meets, we had been talking about our favorite foods and about things we have been doing at home, such as baking and cooking,” she continued. “Some of the students would bring their breakfasts or lunches to the Meets also, so I thought it would be fun to have a pizza party and eat lunch together.” According to Schwartz, J&S Pizza was selected to provide the pizzas because it is a family business of one of her students. “When the pandemic began, they were

handing out free make-your-own pizza kits to any family who wanted one, so I contacted them,” she said. “I thought that even though we had a smaller budget since we were using our own money, we would still be able to support a local family business of one of our students while putting smiles on all of our students’ faces. J&S Pizza was willing to make those pizza kits for us within the budget we had.” Schwartz explained that she and her partners Darrow and Morosco have two homerooms, one with 27 students and one with 22 students. After emailing parents to let them know the timeframe of their delivery and their plans, while asking them to keep it as a surprise for the pupils, the teachers began to prepare the deliveries. “It took about two hours to deliver about 13 pizzas each,” Schwartz said. “The students were so excited to see us. It gave us the opportunity to say goodbye, and tell them how proud we were of them, and that no matter how they started the year in the [Sayreville] Middle School next year, that they were going to be okay. We also gave them all of their certificates, a chapter book, and letters from both Mrs. Darrow and I in a New Jersey Devils string bag.” Following the deliveries, Schwartz spoke favorably of the pizza party and noted that it provided Darrow an opportunity to reveal her pregnancy to the pupils. “The virtual pizza party worked out well,” she said. “It was the largest attendance at a Google Meet this year. We had our guidance counselor Mrs. [Linda] Smith, and our Math ASI [Academic Support Instruction] instructor Mrs. [Michelle] DiPaolo drop in for a visit and eat lunch with us as well. “Mrs. Darrow couldn’t tell the students about her pregnancy before the shutdown, so she announced it at the party by showing them her belly,” Schwartz continued. “The expressions of shock and excitement on the students’ faces said it all. We conducted a poll on whether the twins would be boys or girls, or one of each. “We also chatted about pizza toppings and thick vs. thin crust pizza, and what we wanted to do when the pandemic restrictions started to lift. It was a wonderful opportunity for everyone ‘to see’ each other and have some fun.” While Schwartz acknowledged the difficulty of the project, she found the end result to be rewarding. “This class was special because I had a lot of them in third grade when I worked at Eisenhower [Elementary] School. I was lucky enough to watch them grow there and then see them again when I moved to SUES. They have a special place in my heart, and I couldn’t be prouder of their work this year.”

Challenge encourages residents to lose weight, fundraise for Alzheimer’s NJ

A

great percentage of Right at Home of Central New Jersey’s clients suffer from Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia and Beth Sholom, owner/executive director of Right at Home of Central New Jersey, is passionate about finding a cure for this insidious disease. For a number of years, Right at Home of Central New Jersey has held many fundraising events, including the annual Smash Out Alzheimer’s event, to raise awareness as well as provide significant funds to donate to Alzheimer’s-related charities.

As the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to ravage communities across the world and changed the way we all lived and worked, Sholom wanted to find a novel way to address the “new normal which could be the catalyst to raise funds for Alzheimer’s New Jersey. Because the risk of exposure to COVID-19 remains lowest for those who can stay in their homes and limit outside contact, she knew that many people haven’t been able to eat healthy or exercise as regularly as they normally would, she said in a prepared statement. to peacefully protest the death of George Floyd,” representatives of the department wrote on social media. “We fully support the right of our residents to peacefully demonstrate and engage in a thoughtful and positive discussion aimed towards justice and racial equality. We want to assure our residents that the Sayreville Police Department has spent the past several days coordinating with event organizers to ensure the safety of our residents and demonstration participants. “Rest assured the Sayreville Police Department will take every proactive measure necessary to protect demonstrators, residents and businesses, alike,” they continued. “We appreciate the cooperation of everyone involved and expect a peaceful demonstration. This has been a very difficult time in America and we are fully supportive of this very important discussion.” Following the event, the police department representatives wrote, “The demonstration was anticipated by many with both enthusiasm and concern. What resulted was a respectful expression of feelings, emotions and social consciousness by all that participated or witnessed the protest. “The event organizers, Kiera, Aaliyah and Erene, asked for an opportunity to publicly discuss and share their life experiences in Sayreville under the backdrop and in context to the deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor,” they continued. “Their self-expression was meant to be educational to those with and without any experience in racial and social injustice. All of which to be organized in collaborative fashion. “The 400 participants, including the entire police command staff, took part in this experience and witnessed a discussion that promised and fulfilled the goal of sharing unfiltered and raw personal experiences. Much could be learned, not simply by the content of the discussion, but also from the respectful and considerate nature of those in attendance. “We cannot and do not engage in political discussion or impugn opinions on social issues,” the department representatives wrote. “However, it is not beyond our duties and responsibilities to reconfirm our commitment to fair, equal and unbiased service to each and every member of our community.”

Jo Ann Badal Jo Ann Badal, formerly of Old Bridge, New Jersey died on Monday, June 15, 2020, at Centra State Medical Center in Freehold, New Jersey. Jo Ann retired at age 80 in 2011 as Administrative Secretary for the Middlesex County Treasurer’s OfďŹ ce following 33 years of employment, receiving commendations for service and promotions. Long active and dedicated to her community, healthcare, and education, she was Past President of Madison Township High School PTSA (now Old Bridge). She served for six years on the Middlesex County Council of PTAs in positions including: Membership Chairman, Recording Secretary, Public Relations Chairman and Vice President. She was honored by the N.J. State PTA with a Lifetime Membership and served on the State PTA Board for two years as Membership Chairman. Jo Ann was elected to a two-year term on the Board of Directors of Middlesex County College Foundation in 1975. She was actively involved in the planning and opening of the Old Bridge Regional Hospital (now Raritan Bay) where she became Auxiliary President in 1978. As President, Jo Ann served as an ex-ofďŹ cio member of the Perth Amboy General Hospital Board of Governors and a member of its Consumer Health Advisory Board. Jo Ann’s voluntary service included a three-year term as Secretary of the New Jersey Hospital Association’s Region IV Council on Auxiliaries, which served 21 hospitals in New Jersey. Jo Ann Romano was born and raised in Newark, New Jersey, married John Roy Badal in 1957 and had two daughters, Sharon Lee and Linda Jean. She lived in Old Bridge from 1961-2019, then moved to The Chelsea at Manalapan, where she enjoyed and participated in all the activities, especially poker, crafts and bingo. Sharon and Jo Ann’s beloved granddaughter Noelle Capri spent many wonderful times with her at The Chelsea, singing to the entertainment, bringing her favorite sandwiches and sweets and laughing - a lot! The family would like to thank The Chelsea at Manalapan and Visiting Angels of Matawan for their compassionate care and support. Among her favorite things were shopping, the Diamond Slots in Atlantic City and Frank Sinatra’s music. She made every holiday from birthdays to Christmas memorable and special for her family. Jo Ann enjoyed taking cruises with her sister Jean and going to Atlantic City with her sister Fran. Jo Ann was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother and her kindness and generosity made her truly the heart of the family. Jo Ann had an incredible sense of style and her clothes reected her personality - colorful and vibrant. She loved to laugh and have fun. She was always smiling and her optimism was contagious. She is predeceased by her husband John Roy Badal and her daughter Linda Jean Badal Mazurek. Jo Ann leaves behind her daughter Sharon Lee Badal, her sisters Jean Polk of Columbia Tennessee and Frances Gonnella of Manchester New Jersey, her granddaughter Noelle Capri Mazurek (NYU Class of 2018), and her son-in-law Gregory Mazurek. She loved colorful owers so they are most welcome. The family will receive visitors from 4:00pm to 7:00pm on Thursday, June 18, 2020 at Michael Hegarty & John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals and Cremation Service, 3377 US Highway 9, Old Bridge, New Jersey. The funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Friday, June 19, 2020 at Michael Hegarty & John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals and Cremation Service followed by entombment at Forest Green Park Cemetery. A luncheon to celebrate her life will be planned when circumstances permit.

ST. JUDE NOVENA

Novenas PRAYER IS POWERFUL Oh, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine of splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this petition. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my Mother. Oh Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse in thee (3Xs). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3Xs). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. + Say this prayer 3 consecutive days and publish prayer after petition is granted. Do not despair. Additional advice and petition. Pray the Rosary regularly. F.A.M.

St. Jude, hope of the hopeless, pray for us. Say this prayer nine times a day. By the eighth day your prayer will be answered. Say it for nine days. It has never been known to fail. Publication must be promised. Thank you, St. Jude.
