“I remember once we were asked to fly something for breast cancer awareness and we said they could put pink ribbons all over the town, but that we couldn’t fly a flag,” she continued. “We’ve already said no at one point.” Sharing the council president’s stance on the motion, Roberts said, “We’re opening up the floodgates and special interests now, which means we have to consider any special interest.” There was also concern over whether a flag would need to be taken down to make

Recently, Raritan Bay Medical Center Old Bridge leaders and team members unveiled the time capsule during the construction of its new expanded Emergency Department. “I want to thank Old Bridge mayor Owen Henry and our team members who came out for the unveiling of the time capsule,” Thomas G. Shanahan, chief hospital executive, Raritan Bay Medical Center, said in a prepared statement. See the video “As we enter into the www.centraljersey.com new normal it’s nice to come together and celebrate the history of our hospital as well as looking forward to the future with our new expanded Emergency Department.” The findings in the time capsule were a Bible, newspaper articles, brick of the building, construction hat, and 1995 NJ Devils hat. “We look forward to burying another time capsule later this year with our team members as the construction on our new expanded Emergency Department continues,” William DiStanislao, vice president, Operations and executive site director, Raritan Bay Medical Center, said in the statement. In October 2019, Raritan Bay Medical Center Old Bridge broke ground on its new Emergency Department, a $39 million investment that will encompass 24,000-square-feet – more than double the current footprint. The new state-of-theart Emergency Department will provide safer, faster arrivals by adding additional ambulance bays, newly designed pediatric rooms, behavioral health and new onsite technology with equipment that will provide more accurate diagnostics and

or the first time in borough history, an LGBT pride flag was raised in Sayreville during June. On June 22, the Borough Council voted 4-2 on a motion to have a flag representing LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual) pride flown in Sayreville. Council members Vincent Conti, Kevin Dalina, Damon Enriquez and Michele Maher voted “yes” on the motion. Council President Mary Novak and Councilwoman Donna Roberts, citing that the action could force the gov-

erning body to accept all proposals to raise flags for groups, voted “no”. The council’s action followed a letter submitted by resident Carol Kulikowski seeking to have a LGBT flag flown in June, which is pride month for the community. Dalina made a motion to have the flag raised, which was seconded by Enriquez. In voting “no” on the motion, Novak said, “I believe we’re going to start having a lot of groups wanting their flags put up. Once you say yes to one, you have to say yes to everybody and I don’t think that I would want to get involved with a lot of the other flags out there.

Seniors at Reformed Church Home in Old Bridge offer words of wisdom, advice to graduating seniors By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

T

he seniors at Reformed Church Home offered graduating seniors words of wisdom as they head off on their next journey in life. “Don’t take anything for granted, work to reach your goals and you’ll be happy,” Millie Romano said. The Reformed Church Home (RCH) threw its first Senior to Senior graduation celebration on June 16, filled with as much socially distanced pomp and circumstance for the graduates, who either worked at RCH or who are children of employees of RCH. RCH provides assisted living, rehabilitation, long-term nursing care and respite care services at its Old Bridge location. Amy Wendel, director of activities at RCH, said with canceled or postponed in-person graduations for high school and college seniors, and their seniors having been quarantined for so long due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, the Senior to Senior graduation celebration was born. Adelaide Wright told the graduating seniors to “continue their formal education, volunteer to help others while learning yourself, and find new things every day.” Magdalene Holland agreed. “Stay in school as long as you can, don’t be in a hurry to leave home and never, never stop listening to the grass,

birds, the wind … everything,” she said. The graduating seniors included Deanna Campbell, Brian Gray, Hannah Osbahr and Marlon Iann Vergara from Old Bridge High School; Kaitlyn Ann Mendoza from

Kate Shepard, executive director at RCH, welcomed the graduates and their families. Old Bridge High School Principal Vincent Sasso delivered the keynote speech. Following his speech, Sasso, along with Claudie Ramirez, a teacher at St. John Vianney, and Marybeth Drabik, a teacher at Sayreville War Memorial, offered testimonials from teachers and staff for the graduates. Michelle Agyemamg, director of social services at RCH, and Paula LeBlanc, director of development, presented diplomas for the graduates. Each graduate wore their respective cap and gown. After the ceremony, the graduates moved their tassels from right to left and with the lead from Casalaspro threw their caps in the air. The seniors, graduates and guests enjoyed refreshments, music from the RCH dining services and DJ Jerry Castaldo, and pictures in the Don Adams Memorial Garden. The graduating seniors also recieved a folder filled with advice from the seniors at RCH.

YMCA partners with agencies to distribute nearly 10,000 meals

T

he YMCA of Greater Monmouth County pivoted immediately when its facilities shut down in March as the COVID crisis started. The gym floors, exercise spaces and pools were vacant, but employees and volunteers jumped into action to respond to critical community needs. Working in partnership with area food banks and community organizations, the Y has been distributing hundreds of meals and food supplies four days a week at their facilities in Old Bridge, Freehold, Middletown and Red Bank, according to information provided by the Y. When YMCAs throughout the state were ordered to close their doors in the initial phase of what would become a national health crisis, the YMCA of Greater Monmouth County quickly turned its health and wellness facilities into community hubs for food, meals and other essential services. The Y initiated and carried out blood drives and COVID-19 testing at several facilities. The Y also offered emergency child care for essential workers, and mental health services for community members struggling during the crisis, according to the statement. “We knew that this unprecedented event would compound stress factors for people

in our community who were already struggling to make ends meet. The added pressure of social isolation, health and safety fears, concerns about job loss and food insecurity would have a big impact on those we served. We identified our most immediate needs and did what we could to become a critical safety net and support system,” Y President and CEO Laurie Goganzer said in the statement. Goganzer said dozens of volunteers have worked over 160 hours assisting with the recent food distribution and food drives – all part of the Y’s Togetherhood initiative, which recruits Y members to provide support outside the walls of the Y. “Togetherhood has been an amazing resource and fit for this project,” she said in the statement. “We are blessed with community members who stepped up to the plate during this crisis. It’s overwhelming when we realize all that our volunteers do.” The Y has also collected nonperishable food, infant formula, diapers, and hygiene items for the Old Bridge Township Food Bank, Lunch Break and Fulfill. The Y will continue food distribution at these locations until further notice: Old Bridge Family YMCA, 1 Mannino Park Dr., Old Bridge, from noon to 4 p.m. Mondays; Red Bank Family YMCA, 166 Ma-

ple Ave., Red Bank, from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesdays; and Bayshore Family Success Center, 945 Route 36, Leonardo, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays by appointment, and Fridays. Goganzer said the Y anticipates the need for food supplies will continue through the state’s gradual reopening, especially as schools close for the summer, ending their breakfast and lunch services. The Y will continue to provide critical mental health counseling via telehealth and by appointment at its counseling and social services centers in Matawan and Eatontown.

room for the LGBT flag, although Dalina, who is the event manager and an adjunct professor at Middlesex County College, noted that no flags are removed when the LGBT flag is flown at the community college. Conti agreed that a precedent could be set by allowing the LGBT flag to be flown, but ultimately voted “yes” out of support for the community. “If we are not taking down other flags, and I don’t think that we would, and at the risk of creating problems down the line with other organizations, I’ll cautiously say yes,” Conti said. “I want to support the [LGBT] organization.” Dalina, Enriquez and Maher joined Conti in approving the motion, establishing that the flag would be flown for the remainder of the month. Mayor Victoria Kilpatrick, who could only vote to break ties, also voiced support for raising the LGBT flag in Sayreville. After the council’s vote, Kilpatrick said, “Obviously, we’re not in favor of removing any flags, but it would be an addition for the month of June, for the next several days. We here in Sayreville will display and show our support and pridefulness to the LGBT community.”

South River native discusses oceanology while serving in Navy By VASHTI HARRIS Staff Writer

W

ith a passion for military service, math and science, South River native and U.S. Naval Lt. Stephanie Geant talked about oceanology as part of New Jersey’s Virtual Navy Week. Due to the U.S. Department of the Navy’s public health precautions, New Jersey Navy Week, scheduled for May 11-17, was re-imagined into New Jersey Virtual Navy Week, an online virtual outreach event hosted on the Navy Office of Community Outreach’s social media platforms, according to a prepared statement from the Navy Office of Community Outreach Media Outreach Department. Navy Office of Community Outreach Public Affairs Specialist Dustin Good interviewed Geant recently via Facebook Live. Geant said she is stationed at the Navy Meteorology and Oceanographic Command at the Stennis Space Center in Mississippi, where she serves as the flag aide to the commander. “My current job, it’s not as math and science-intensive as some of … the other positions within naval oceanography. So I manage the admiral’s schedule, travel plans and it’s really an overview of the

whole community naval oceanography,” Geant said. “So while it may not be math and science-intensive, learning about traveling definitely makes up for not being as hands-on in the math and science realm.” Geant said naval oceanography as a whole involves the bottom of that ocean to the stars. So there’s not a ship that sails, a submarine that goes underway, or an aircraft that flies without naval oceanography. “If you want to think, basically all Navy operations start with [oceanography]. So if you want to know the weather forecast, you want to know what your seas are doing, [what] the oceans like, precise navigation and time, everything on your cell phone comes from the United States Navy and naval oceanography. So the time that is on everyone’s cell phone is part of oceanography. So it’s a lot of stuff and it’s really cool,” she said. For those who are not familiar with oceanography, Geant said she likes to think of it as everything that is not above the waterline. “If you think about the symmetry of the ocean floor … to how the water acts in the water column based on water temperature, currents, tides, and all that, it has an affect on sound propagation, which is huge to submarines,” Geant said. “So just under-

standing that and I think [with] oceanography sometimes people think mammals and dolphins and all that really cool stuff, but it’s a lot more than that.” Born and raised in New Jersey, Geant said she lived there until she was 18 and then went to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. “I was 11 years old when Sept. 11 [2001] happened and seeing the Twin Towers, not fall, but the aftermath – seeing the smoke in my town, my dad working a double shift as a police officer, and my mom eventually getting laid off,” Geant said. “I think it had a huge influence on me [and] … why I was so angry that something like this could happen. I knew I wanted to serve. So just the proximity to New York City on Sept. 11 alone shaped me to where I am today.” Being the kid who would dress up as G.I. Joe, Geant said by the time she was in sixth or seventh grade she knew she wanted to be in the military. “During my high school career, I just knew I wanted to go to a service academy,” Geant said. “So I shaped everything I did, from getting good grades, studying, taking the credit courses, [Advanced Placement] classes and calculus, and then getting involved in sports, making sure I had leadership on my record and kind of just molding the goal I was after, really helped.” Geant said she went to the Naval Academy with the intent of becoming a pilot and to study aerospace engineering; however, oceanography just really stood out to her. “So I majored in oceanography and it was cool. The fact … there’s so much to the ocean to learn about and then there’s the weather side, so I focus more on the atmospheric sciences and all the math that’s involved,” Geant said. “So at the Naval Academy, in oceanography alone, you take all the way up to differential equations. …

P d Then at the Naval Academy, you also takec two semesters of electrical engineering,e chemistry, physics, and it’s just very math r and science [intensive].” Since graduating from the Naval Acad-c emy, Geant said she started off as a surfaceo warfare officer and did two surface warfares tours on ships, and both out of Norfolk,s s Virginia. “I switched over to become a meteorol-h ogy officer, which is part of the information warfare community. … So after that,A I went to join the Joint Typhoon Warningt Center in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, as a com-a mand duty officer and then I was there forc about two years. … It was one of the cool-w est tours I’ve had so far,” Geant said. Geant said the Joint Typhoon Warningn Center does typhoon or hurricane warn-D ings throughout the western, Pacific southern hemisphere and does repackaging warnings for the central and eastern PacificC for the Central Pacific Hurricane Center,v which is in Honolulu, Hawaii. It also doesc tsunami warnings for the U.S. Departmentc t of Defense. “In the practical sense, you’re not necessarily sitting there writing a math prob-c lem out, but the forces that are the Eartha has, the rotation, [and] the atmospherics instability all play into whether or not a storm system is going to form,” Geant said. “That’s why you always hear ‘well if you’re in the southern hemisphere and if you flush a toilet, it’ll rotate the other way.’ That’s not a true statement, but it’s caused by a force on the earth.” Geant said the Coriolis Force is needed in order to have a hurricane. She said her craziest experience while serving as far was when was in Hawaii during the 2018 Hawaii false missile alert incident. “After my current position … I’m (Continued on next page)

Sayreville Day is currently planned for Sept. 12, with a rain date of Sept. 19, at Kennedy Park. Resident Gail Thompson is organizing a group of 10 handcrafters and artists who will demonstrate what they create to the public. The purpose is to encourage people to appreciate and admire handcrafted items and learn how to do a simple craft.

There will be no fee to exhibit, but no sales are allowed. For more information, contact Thompson at quilt23lady@gmail.com or 732-2346194.

ON THE ROAD PETER PERROTTA

Mazda 3 Hatchback

W

hen it comes to Japanese imports in the automotive world, most consumers immediately think of Toyota, Honda and Nissan. These are Japan’s Big Three. But, the real diamond in the rough, though, is Mazda. While Mazda doesn’t sell anywhere near the amount of vehicles that the Big Three pump out, it doesn’t take a back seat to any one of them when it comes to producing quality cars at a reasonable price. Peter Perrotta I recently jumped behind the wheel of the 2020 Mazda 3 Hatchback – with Premium Package – for one week to see if this under rated Japanese auto maker still has the mojo. Guess what? It sure does. Overall, after a week of putting this compact hatchback through its paces, I would say it checks off most of the boxes that would lead to an impressive review by this car reviewer. The only caveat I would have – and this probably would have to do more with me than the car itself – is that at a creaky 64 years of age, on a lanky six-foot frame, I found that bending down to get into and out of this model car was sometimes a chore – depending upon how creaky my bones were that particular day. So maybe this isn’t the car for the senior citizen crowd, but that doesn’t take anything away from the fine product it is. This Mazda 3 Hatchback competes with the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic in its segment and I would say it stacks up better than the Corolla and on par with the Civic. For the most part, buyers who are considering compact cars – especially hatchbacks – are generally of the younger crowd anyway.

Mazda 3 Hatchback

Case in point, my 21-year-old son thought the Mazda 3 Hatchback was “pretty cool”. For the record, the 2020 Mazda 3 Hatchback I tested for one week was the top of the line Premium Package edition with a base price of $28,900. The Premium Package edition comes standard with: active driving heads up display; adaptive front lighting system; leather seats; black finish alloy wheels; front and rear signature illumination; power sliding glass moonroof and paddle shifters. Additional options on my tester vehicle included: cargo mat ($100); illuminated door sill trim plates ($425); Soul Crystal Red Paint ($595); frameless auto dimming mirror ($275); Navigation SD card ($450); rear bumper guard ($125) and wireless charging pad ($275). When you add in the $920 for destination and delivery, the MSRP sticker price of my tester vehicle was $32,065. Mazda offers the Mazda 3 Hatchback in seven different models, both front wheel and all wheel drive. The base model, front wheel drive hatchback has a base price of $23,700. My top of the line all wheel drive, premium package model is considerably more at a base price of $28,900. Mazda redesigned the 3 Hatchback last

SUBMITTED PHOTO

year – giving it a sleeker, more sculpted and modern look. That look carries over to the 2020 Mazda 3. The outside and inside of this model is quite attractive, lending itself to a more expensive look and feel. Powering both the sedan and hatchback models of the Mazda 3 is only one engine choice, a 2.5 liter, four cylinder “sky active” engine that produces 186 horsepower, at 186 pound feet of torque. This engine is coupled with a six-speed sport mode automatic transmission. I found the engine and transmission combination in this vehicle to be adequate. When in the “sport” gear selector mode, there was ample power to accelerate or pass aggressively. The all wheel drive, drive train and suspension were well meshed. This vehicle holds its own in any type of inclement weather. Besides, my issues with hopping into and out of the car, once I was settled into the front seat, there is ample room upfront. The back seat configuration on the hatchback is a bit snug. Moreover, many car critics have pointed out that the rear window visibility is not the greatest on the hatchback design for this model. I would have to agree. The interior design and ergonomics are solid on the Mazda 3. It lends itself to a

generally good quality feel. However, I was not overly thrilled with the center console infotainment system, featuring a 8.8-inch, non-touch screen, color display. The system is controlled by a center console master switch. While the phone, music system and navigation sync up rather easily, I found the system to be cumbersome to use for what should be some easy tasks. The AM/FM Bose premium audio system – which comes standard on this model – with 12 speakers put out some impressive surround sound music, though. The EPA fuel economy ratings for this vehicle come in at 27 miles per gallon overall – 32 mpg in highway driving and 24 in city driving. The EPA estimates that the annual fuel cost for driving this vehicle comes in at about $1,500, as it uses 3.7 gallons of gas per every 100 miles driven. This model Mazda 3 has not been rated yet for the government’s five star safety rating. If you choose the more expensive premium package model it comes loaded with a ton of neat standard features including: 18-inch alloy wheels; power driver seat with lumbar; heated front seats; leather seats with a leather wrapped steering wheel and shift knob; rearview camera; rain sensing wipers; blue tooth; dual zone climate control and more. Many other car review critics have raved about the recently redesigned Mazda 3. The editors at Car and Driver give it high marks. And, U.S. News and World Report says: “The 2020 Mazda 3 sits near the top of our compact car rankings. Its engaging performance and upscale interior help it stand out in a highly competitive segment.”

PRAYER IS POWERFUL Oh, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine of splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this petition. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my Mother. Oh Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse in thee (3Xs). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3Xs). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. + Say this prayer 3 consecutive days and publish prayer after petition is granted. Do not despair. Additional advice and petition. Monroe Township Jewish War Veterans Post 609 is collecting United States and foreign stamps, both on and off envelopes. Stamps are used by veterans as hobbies and as therapy to support medical staff at VA Medical Centers nationwide. Stamps are not traded or sold; they are forwarded to veteran patients at no charge. Also requested are DVDs suitable for veterans at those locations. Send all items to JWV Post 609, c/o Charles Koppelman, 6 Yarmouth Dr., Monroe 08831-4742. Old Bridge High School is seeking active duty or reservist military personnel who are alumni for the Military Wall of Honor expected to be established this year. The wall is meant to commemorate graduates who have given their lives to honor their country and shine a light on the importance of veterans within the Old Bridge community. Residents are urged to assist with the project by spreading the word of the proposed military wall. The high school is looking for graduates from 1995 through the present.
