Resident organizes rally in support of Old Bridge police By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

T

he officers of the Old Bridge Police Department are men and women, husbands and wives, mothers and fathers. “We’re coaches, we have friends, we have families … we’re human beings,” said Vincent Galgano, who serves as president of Old Bridge Policemen’s Benevolent Association (PBA) Local 127 and has been a police officer for more than 20 years. In the past three weeks in the wake of the events in Minneapolis, Galgano said police officers have gone from “heroes to zeros.” George Floyd, an African American man, died after Minneapolis Police Department Officer Derek Chauvin, a white man, knelt on his neck for more than eight minutes after pinning him to the ground during an arrest on May 25. Chauvin was charged with second-degree murder on May 29. Three other officers, Tou Thao, Thomas Lane and J. Alexander Kueng, were charged with aiding and abetting Floyd’s murder on June 3. Old Bridge police walked alongside a Black Lives Matter peaceful protest organized by Old Bridge High School students on June 4. “We need to remember the men and women of this police department are some of the most outstanding police officers in this state,” Galgano said. “For anyone not aware, the Old Bridge Police Department is an accredited police department. We have to go through stringent policies and procedures. Not every police department in New Jersey is accredited.” Galgano also noted the township was named the 15th safest town in the country according to a recent study. Resident George Gough organized a rally to support the Old Bridge Police Department (OBPD) and all good police officers across the country, which was held on June 25 in the municipal complex. The rally included music and people shared

positive police stories. Many held signs including “Police Live Matters,” “Blue Lives Matter,” “We Back the Blue,” “We’ve Got Your Six,” “OBPD We Support You,” and “We Support Our Police.” “We are here today to recognize the men and women who have left their wives, their husbands, sons and daughters and their safety of their homes to protect us,” he said. “They chose a career that is extremely dangerous, they wanted to protect, defend and serve a community and they chose Old Bridge.” Gough said police officers are first responders to car accidents, break-ins, robberies, situations where sometimes it is safe and sometimes it is extremely dangerous. “Most of the calls are of the unknown, little information is given by 911 dispatch, but they have to be prepared for everything,

they have to remember their training, stay calm and cool,” he said. Gough said it breaks his heart what he has been seeing on the news and social media. “I promise to stand here and defend and help any police officer in any situation in any time or day,” he said. “My greatest wish is for all police officers to always come home safe and sound.” Old Bridge Schools Superintendent David Cittadino and Old Bridge Mayor Owen Henry attended the rally, as well as State Sen. Samuel Thompson (R-12). Cittadino shared what his Godfather, who served with the New York Police Department, 41st precinct in the Bronx, N.Y., would say to him when he asked about how his day was at work. “He always had one answer: ‘I made it home,’ ” he recalled. “I think that’s the

mindset for a lot of people who wear the uniform because as long as you make it home it’s a good day. I think that’s the mindset for a lot of Americans that as long as we can get home to our families and our loved ones it is a good day. That’s what we all hold in common and if we focus on the things we have in common instead of our differences, we are going to do great things in this country and this community.” Cittadino said he is proud of the relationship the school district has with the school resource officers and OBPD, who keep all their staff and students safe. Henry said as citizens of the country, parents and grandparents, they have an obligation to teach the younger generation to abide by laws in the country. “My father raised me to know that no (Continued on page 9)

Middlesex County-wide food drive assists 1,500 families

M

iddlesex County Food Organization and Outreach Distribution Services (MCFOODS), in conjunction with the Community FoodBank of New Jersey (CFBNJ) and with contributions from Novo Nordisk, held the county’s first ever drive-thru food distribution event, distributing 1,500 boxes of food to 1,500 families through the event and network of food pantries. The distribution, which was held on June 27 and followed CDC and state guidelines for social distancing, allowed residents to drive up through the distribution line to collect a box of fresh and packaged food, provided by CFBNJ, all while remaining contact-free, according to information provided by the Middlesex County Office of Communication. A crew of 125 volunteers from MCFOODS, CFBNJ, Novo Nordisk and the county donated their time. In addition to its staff answering the call to volunteer, Novo Nordisk donated the use of its campus in Plainsboro and onsite support for all volunteers. “While the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted our way of lives, organizations like MCFOODS and CFBNJ have stepped up in tremendous ways, working around the clock to aid our residents in getting access to one of the most basic needs: food. The Board of Chosen Freeholders extends the greatest thanks and gratitude to MCFOODS, CFBNJ, Novo Nordisk, and our volunteers for the selfless, vital work they have been doing throughout this pandemic,” Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios said in the statement. The event came during a time when many New Jerseyans are experiencing food insecurity due to the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Jennifer Apostol, director of

MCFOODS, compared to last year, the distribution center, which provides food to food pantries around the county, has seen an increase in the number of residents in need of food. MCFOODS saw a 79% increase in the amount of food distributed in March, and a 100% increase in April compared to last year, and a 60% increase in the number of pantries in the network accessing MCFOODS’ services compared to 2019, according to the statement. Additionally, April and May were record-breaking months for the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, with each month seeing the distribution of enough food for nearly 7 million meals, the most ever provided in a single month in CFBNJ’s 45year history, according to the statement. “In these unprecedented times, it takes the collaboration of all sectors of society to ensure nutritious food for struggling families. We at CFBNJ are grateful for our partnerships with MCFOODS, Middlesex County, Novo Nordisk, and for all of the volunteers who have stepped up to help meet the basic needs of their neighbors, many of whom are struggling for the first time in their lives due to the pandemic,” Carlos Rodriguez, president & CEO of the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, said in the statement. In addition to this drive-up distribution event, residents can visit a local food pantry to collect food. Those in need of food specifically within Middlesex County can visit www.middlesexcountynj.gov/ Government/Departments/mcia/Pages/ Mcfoods/mcfoods.asp for a list of pantries providing food during this time; or for those throughout the State of New Jersey, visit cfbnj.org/findfood to locate a CFBNJ partner agency.

RWJUH Blood Services in urgent need of people to donate blood, host blood drives

T

he COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing that was required to slow the spread of infections in New Jersey has caused a severe drop in blood donations and critically low blood supplies at the state’s hospitals. As a result, Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH) Blood Services urges everyone to donate blood or other blood products such as platelets and plasma. All blood types are needed, but Type O blood is particularly in short supply at the present time.

Typically, RWJUH Blood Services would conduct multiple blood drives in the spring and summer months to combat annual blood shortages that occur during summer months due to vacations and schools and colleges not being in session. The current pandemic has severely limited the number of drives that could be scheduled in the spring and early summer this year in anticipation of annual summer blood shortages. “People have been doing their part to slow the spread of COVID-19 by staying

home and socially distancing from other another and they have made a positive impact on flattening the curve of infections,” says Grace Tenorio, MD, medical director of the RWJUH Blood Center. “However, throughout the pandemic, RWJUH still needed to perform emergency surgeries and now that elective surgeries have resumed, the need for blood and blood products is greater than ever. We ask everyone that is able to help us by donating blood.” RWJUH’s Blood Donor Center is located on the fourth floor of the Rutgers Robert

Blood Services is open Monday through Friday and Saturdays by appointment. Call 732-235-8100, extensions 221, 222 or 248; or go online to rwjuhdonorclub.org to schedule an appointment to donate. Middlesex County well represented in ‘Last Dance World Series’ By STEVEN BASSIN Staff Writer

A

merica’s Pastime will be back in action on the diamond this summer with the “Last Dance World Series,” and high school baseball programs throughout the Greater Middlesex Conference will be taking full advantage of the opportunity to play baseball. The statewide tournament that will feature 222 teams and is scheduled to begin on July 14 was the brainchild of Metuchen’s Saint Joseph High School baseball Coach and Athletic Director Mike Murray. Murray gives a lot of credit to baseball programs and people in the baseball community across the state for helping jump start the tournament. There is still work to be done to fine tune player safety measures for the tournament, Murray admits, but the coach is excited to bring some normalcy back to people’s lives with baseball this summer. “First and foremost, our goal is to do this tournament safely and provide players with a close to normal experience of

playing baseball,” Murray said. “Feeling normal is what we need right now. A lot of parents have told me that they are excited to sit in a lawn chair again and watch their kids play baseball. Feels good to see all the kids in the state looking forward to playing in the tournament.” Murray’s St. Joseph squad is the host of the 5A-Metuchen Regional Region and the No. 1 seed in the region that is based in the South Jersey Bracket. The No. 2 seed is Sayreville War Memorial High School, followed by No. 3 seed John F. Kennedy Memorial High School and No. 4 seed Wardlaw Rams, from Woodbridge and Edison, respectively. It’s an eight-team bracket in total with Edison High School standing as the No. 1 seed and hosting the 5B-Edison Regional Region. Rival John P. Steven High School from Edison is the No. 2 seed. Carteret High School serves as the No. 3 seed and South River High School rounds out the region at No. 4. Each team in the tournament will play at least three games during the first round

of pool play. In an eight-team bracket, the two teams that are 2-0 after the first two games of pool play will square off in a contest to advance to the single elimination round of 32. The rest of the teams will advance beyond pool play depending on their record and how it compares to other teams in the entire South Jersey Bracket. St. Joe’s Falcons will have around 19 to 21 players playing on the squad during the tournament, which will include 13 players from the Class of 2020. Both senior righthander Adam Boucher and sophomore lefty Donovan Zak will be playing in the tournament to give St. Joseph a great onetwo duo at the top of its rotation. Making it to the NJSIAA South Jersey, Non-Public A final last year, Murray said the team had high expectations coming into the 2020 season with 16 seniors and a load of talent back in the fold. A goal for the team is to make it to the single elimination round of 32, Murray said, but the overall goal for the squad in the Last Dance World Series is to be back playing on the field together.

“Our guys are happy to be around each other and have the chance to play together one last time”, Murray said. “This gives them some closure and allows them to end this season on their terms. We’re going to compete and have fun.” The Monroe Township High School baseball squad was expecting to make some noise this season in the conference and will try to do so now in the Last Dance World Series. Coach Sean Field will field a team of 22 players that will consist of 12 seniors. After watching his team work so hard in the offseason for the 2020 season and then deal with the long process of watching their spring on the diamond get canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic, Field said he is looking forward to seeing his players back in action this summer. “This is a great scenario for them to play one last time together and compete,” Field said. “This tournament is great, especially for the seniors. The guys are excited to play in the tournament.” (Continued on next page)

Monroe is the No. 3 seed in the 1B-Tri-County Regional Region. The No. 1 seed is Manalapan High School’s Monmouth Monarchs. No. 2 is Allentown High School and Robbinsville High School is the No. 4 seed. The other part of the eight-team bracket is the 1A-Brick Regional Region that is headed by the No. 1 overall seed in the entire South Jersey Bracket in the Jackson Memorial High School baseball team. Jackson Liberty High School, Brick Memorial and Brick Township fill out the rest of that side of the bracket. Field knows his team has a tough challenge ahead of them and even called their bracket the toughest in the tournament. Speaking to his ball club through a Zoom meeting on June 30, Field encouraged his players to continue the team’s mindset of stepping into the batter’s box and competing. Field said that throughout the pandemic his seniors have been holding senior practices where guys are split up into groups of four to five players for workouts on the field. “All of our players stayed engaged throughout the entire process,” Field said. “They would send in workout videos to myself and the coaching staff.” Field saw that drive and determination to play one last time together from his players when the team contacted him right away to sign up for the tournament when it was announced. Old Bridge High School senior Eddie Nugent reacted the same when he heard the news of the tournament being a possibility. Thinking he had lost everything with the spring season being canceled, Nugent is excited for the opportunity he and his fellow Old Bridge teammates have to play in the tournament. “We have to take this blessing and run with it,” Nugent said. “It’s what everyone on the team wanted and all the guys are excited about playing.” The defending GMC champions are the No. 2 seed in the 16A-North Brunswick Regional Region. The team they beat in the conference tournament final, South Brunswick, is the No. 1 seed. North Brunswick Township High School is the No. 3 seed and Saint Thomas Aquinas is the No. 4 seed in the region. South Plainfield High School stands as the No. 1 seed in the 16B-North Brunswick Regional Region. The No. 2 seed is Middlesex High School, followed by Spotswood High School at No. 3 and No. 4 seed Middlesex Vo-Tech. All games will be played at Community Park in North Brunswick. According to Nugent, Old Bridge will have around 25 players on its roster and all six seniors will be participating in the tournament. Nugent said it felt unreal to practice

NEWSPAPER MEDIA GROUP • www.centraljersey.com

with his teammates for the first time on June 30 and that everything felt the same since the last time they practiced. The team also is getting a lot of support from the Old Bridge community with the Sayre Woods South Little League allowing the players to workout on their fields. “Old Bridge High School and the Old Bridge community have a great relationship,” Nugent said. “We give back a lot to the community and they do the same for us.” South Brunswick Coach C.J. Hendricks is looking forward to seeing his players for the first time on July 13 when the NJSIAA will allow high school coaches to conduct workouts with players. Hendricks said he

SUBURBAN 5

can’t wait to hit infield and outfield practice to his players one last time. Until then, Hendricks’ father, Carlos, is holding practices for the team as they prepare to put a good product on the field for the tournament. “They’re happy to be back on the field and excited to play baseball again,” Hendricks said. South Brunswick will have around 18 players on its roster and all 10 seniors from this year’s squad will be participating in the tournament. Hendricks admits that the disappointment he saw his players feel with the spring season being canceled was the toughest thing he has dealt with in his 15 years of

coaching high school baseball. The coach is excited that his squad, especially his seniors, are getting the opportunity to play in the Last Dance World Series. Win or lose, Hendricks’ message to his squad for the tournament is to play the best they can and to have fun with the opportunity of playing together again. “It’s the best we can do under these circumstances,” Hendricks said. “It’s a great way to give the seniors some closure and help them end their high school careers in a nice way.” East Brunswick High School will compete in the tournament and is the No. 3 seed in the 2A-Lincroft Regional Region.

Big City Politics In Small-Town America By Paul Hall

G

ary Zimmer (Steve Carell) is a Democratic political strategist who loves the nuances of the political process. The rush of a successful campaign and seeing your candidate succeed is fulfilling after working through the power, corruption, backstabbing and lies on all sides and within all parties participating in the political process. But Gary is in a funk. He was a vital piece of the failed 2016 election and the loss makes him feel that his party needs to reshape itself. And then, like a ray of sun, Gary stumbles upon a viral video of a man who is perfect to help him reset the narrative in the new film Irresistible from writer/ director Jon Stewart. Jack Hastings (Chris Cooper) is a renegade in a small Wisconsin town. He’s an ex-Marine, invested in many of the same beliefs that have always fueled the party

shining bright on the residents and their political leanings. Who will prevail in the mayoral election of the year? Stewart gives us a small glimpse into a political process that is flush with money and manipulation. So-called experts highlight the panels of pundits overflowing at the seams while the real people who dot the landscape of this country feel like pawns in a larger game. No matter if it is a presidential election or a mayoral race, every race is important to the bottom line. Power and money make unique bedfellows and all of the pieces fit together to fund a machine, whether in Washington or Deerlaken. Carell and Byrne shine in their roles as rival strategists and the two of them remind us that it is all a giant game. Stewart’s film may rub some the wrong way — he takes aim at both political parties and the process that is in place. Everything in this film could easily be flipped around and the view is not condemning of one party or the other. In a society that is becoming increasingly polarized with us getting our information solely from sources who match our belief system, it reminds us that maybe, just maybe, listening to a variety of points of view will help us all come through life in a better place and with a healthy perspective. We are not a political party. We are the people.

Gary loves. Jack is someone who could catapult the party to reset for the upcoming elections and Gary believes he is the key to the entire nationwide electorate. So what makes Jack the poster child for the new Democratic Party? He is a blue-collar, salt-of-the-earth farmer. He was in the military. The viral video that Gary stumbled upon has him fighting for the rights of immigrants and he believes in Paul’s Grade: B most of the core philosophies of the Party. Irresistible Rated R He has Midwestern, relatable sensibiliStars: Steve Carell, Rose Byrne, ties and doesn’t feel like a politician. And Chris Cooper because of all of these points, Gary has Director: Jon Stewart one mission: get Jack onboard and help him become mayor of Deerlaken, Wis. It Available now to rent and enjoy from is through this process that Gary believes online retailers everywhere, including he can reshape the national image of the AppleTV, FandangoNOW, Amazon Prime Democratic Party. Video and more. When Gary gets the national Party involved in the local mayoral campaign, the money starts flowing and the attention begins to grow for this small town. And when a traditional Republican stronghold is assaulted, one thing must happen: The opposition has to stop them. Enter rival strategist Faith Brewster (Rose Byrne). She is the Republican counterpart to Gary and the two rivals make small-town Wisconsin the focus of national news and the focus of talking heads on both sides CREDIT: DANIEL MCFADDEN / FOCUS FEATURES of the political spectrum. honor society. Rayaan said he will miss his teachers, friends who are heading off to out-of-state colleges, fun times spent in the classroom, and his involvement in clubs and societies. The Class of 2020 had to end their school year at home due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. ( Jordan said remote learning is not as effective as learning in the classroom. She said there was a period of time as teachers and students were adjusting to the new norm and there was a push back in learning. However, she said everyone “worked hard and kept at it” to finish the end of the year. Raayan said he found the district did a good job with transitioning to remote learning with Microsoft Teams and the online curriculum. He said his teachers were very involved and he felt prepared for his AP exams at the end of the year. Many senior class milestones including the graduation ceremony have been altered due to the pandemic. The district held virtual scholarship and athletic ceremonies and a virtual prom. An in-person prom is scheduled for the end of July. In the continued efforts to celebrate the Class of 2020, district buses with banners “OBHS Applauds Our Graduates” traveled to 20 different locations on June 11 and honked their horns, the district provided lawn signs for graduates and on May 9, Schools Superintendent David Cittadino planned an #OBBannerDay to create new memories for the class. He booked a New Jersey aviation company to fly over the township with a banner “OB Schools We Miss Our Kids (and hear) the 2020 Class. Stay Well.” The district plans to live stream and tape the graduation commencement exercises. In addition, multiple graduation stages will be set up outside of Door No. 1 in the front of the OBHS Main building for family photo opportunities from July 8-10.

one is above the law and he also told me to pay homage to the flag and appreciate every day what that flag means,” he said. Galgano said PBA Local 127 is composed of not just police officers, they are humanitarians. “We care about the community, we love the community,” he said. “The community is our backbone and we’re always going to be there for you guys.” PBA Local 127 recently awarded $5,000 worth of scholarships to township high school seniors; purchased equipment for township elementary schools; donated to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life for cancer research; purchased a pediatric wheelchair for a township resident; and in the midst of the novel coronavirus pandemic bought pizzas for residents struggling to put food on the table and donated gift cards to the Old Bridge Food Bank. Resident Kimberly Finno said the rally is not just to support the OBPD, but to support every good law enforcement officer across the country. “The only way to combat negativity online is to put all positive [stories] online,” she said, urging the public to keep sharing positive police stories. During the rally, Gough, with the help of the many children at the rally, handed out gift cards from local restaurants and businesses to the police officers and their families. Attendees also, on behalf of PBA Local 127, were able to enter a free raffle.

ON THE ROAD PETER PERROTTA

2020 Lexus RC 350 F Sport AWD If it looks and sounds like a hot car, is it truly a “hot” car? That’s a good question. The answer, of course, depends on who you ask. When it comes to the 2020 Lexus RC 350 F Sport, an all wheel drive coupe that is a sure head turner when you take it down the block, the good looking part of that equation is a certain slam dunk. The sound part is easy, too. When you put this coupe, introduced in 2014, in Peter Perrotta the “sports plus” driving mode it emits a heartwarming exhaust rumble when you accelerate that is quite frankly rather impressive. So, if you are asking me, the answer should be that this attractive sports car, the coupe version of the IS sedan, is certainly a “hot” performance car. However, there are those in the automotive press that give this Lexus high marks for its looks, craftsmanship and comfort, but stop short of patting it on the back as a sports performance coupe. However, for me, the 3.5 liter, V6 engine with a six speed automatic transmission that puts out 311 horsepower at 6,600 pound feet of torque has plenty sports performance in it. You may not win any Indy races with that powerplant, but it can certainly get you in a whole heap of trouble with your local law enforcement agents if you so chose to get heavy footed with this vehicle. The 0 to 60 clocking on this snazzy coupe is six seconds. Again, I’m not trying to win the Grand Prix here. But, that is more than enough to get your heart pound-

2020 Lexus RC 350 F Sport AWD

ing when doing an aggressive pass or just trying to accelerate onto the interstate. The folks at Consumer Reports say: “The various driving modes sharpen throttle and steering response, but the car’s weight ultimately compromises its agility.” Personally, I didn’t find that to be true. I ran this car aggressively through some tricky twists and turns from time to time and thought that it held up quite well. It sticks to the road with very little body lean and I never felt that the car was about to get away from me at any point. Over at Car and Driver, for comments under “high points” they said: “Fierce body work, surprisingly refined ride quality and spacious cockpit”. For “lows”: “Back seat is not spacious, contrived touchpad controller, should be quicker.” I agree on the back seat and the controller, but not on the “should be quicker” comment. Overall, Car and Driver stated, “The RC has the superficial traits of a sports car but lacks the athleticism.” I’m not sure what these guys were driving, but, sure if

SUBMITTED PHOTO

you compare it to the AMG Mercedes line, or the M series BMWs, it’s not going to measure up. But, in reality, there aren’t many roads or circumstances where you can even use the power of this car to its full potential. So, what’s the point of those 500 to 600 horsepower stallions? Anyway, for the record, my test vehicle has a base price of $50,905. With added options and destination charges, the MSRP sticker price comes in at $57,785. The added options included: $2,725 for the Navigation/Mark Levinson Audio package; $1,160 for triple beam LED headlamps; $1,100 for a power moonroof; $500 for intuitive parking assist; $150 for an F Sport heated steering wheel and $220 for an all weather package that includes headlamp washers, windshield wiper deicer, water repellant front door glass and fast-response interior heating. While the exterior of the RC 350 is certainly an aggressive looking sports coupe, the interior is nicely refined. The ergonomics of the dash and all the controls is expensive looking and sporty at the same time.

The front bucket seats are form fitting, firm and comfortable. And, the Mark Levinson sound premium sound system is simply “off the hook”. It outfits this coupe with 17 speakers that are capable of pumping out 835 watts of premium surround sound. I was quite impressed with this audio system. The only knock is that the touchpad center console controller that links to the 10.3-inch color screen is at times finicky and clumsy to use when trying to control the phone, music selection or navigation. The voice command system, which bypasses the need for the touch pad controller, works fine, though. The EPA Department of Transportation fuel economy ratings for this vehicle are 21 miles per gallon overall – with a 24 mpg rating for highway driving and 18 for city driving. The EPA estimates that the annual fuel cost for operating this coupe to be about $2,300 per year as it uses about 4.8 gallons of gas per every 100 miles. This vehicle has not been rated by the government for its 5-star safety rating test. The RC coupe comes in an all wheel drive and rear wheel drive version. It’s available in a 300 model featuring a 2.0 liter 4 cylinder turbo engine that puts out 241 horsepower. There’s a 350 and 350 F Sport with the 3.5 liter, V6 that I drove. And, finally there is a top of the line F model that features a 5.9 liter, V8 that puts out 472 horsepower. The RC 350 I drove comes with loads of standard equipment, including: 19-inch split, five spoke wheels; F Sport grill; Bluetooth; Apple Car play and Android capability; a rear view camera and loads of the newest safety and technology equipment.

Why have our customers chosen us over another window company? 1. Fibrex® Material Our Fibrex material was researched by Andersen en for 30 years before it was installed in even one home. Our Fibrex material is twice as strong as vinyl. 2. Unique Look Our window has the elegant look and strength of a wood window, but our Fibrex material doesn’t demand the same maintenance of wood.* 3. Accountability There’s no frustrating “middle man” to deal with. We manage the entire process–from building to installation to the warranty–on windows and patio doors.
