Officials seek input on making Disbrow, Amboy Roads a dead end By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

ttempts to slow down traffic on Route 34, Disbrow and Amboy roads, has spanned more than two decades from the installation of solar stop signs, signage and police enforcement patrol. The latest proposed traffic safety concept in Old Bridge is essentially making Disbrow Road a dead end street for people traveling from Lambertson Road crossing Amboy Road. Township officials discussed the proposed concept at a Township Council meeting on July 20. Henry said they have sent out letters to residents in the area seeking feedback, opinions and suggestions of the proposed concept, which are due by July 31. “There have been a number of very serious accidents [at the intersection of Amboy and Disbrow roads],” Mayor Owen Henry said. “We feel [making Disbrow Road a dead end] will greatly improve that intersection. People coming from Lambertson will not go down Disbrow, they will either have to make a left or right onto Amboy.” Henry said in discussions with Township Engineer Nicole Shapiro, the dead end concept came to light. “The substandard roadway that Disbrow turns into right after the residential

development between there and the last exit into the parking lot of the health and racquetball club has been substandard forever,” he said. At one point, the area was a cow path, officials said. Shapiro said they looked at different alternatives for the area, however, the steep slope and environmental constraints prevent officials from widening the 90-degree narrow roadway. Also moving utility transmissions along the right side of the roadway would cost the township in the millions, Shapiro said. Henry said making the roadway a dead end would eliminate unnecessary two-way traffic on the substandard roadway. “This is something that has been going on for years,” he said. “This is an attempt to finally do something, it may not be the best thing to do, but can certainly make it a lot better than it is now. Disbrow won’t be a cut through [anymore] or a cutout as they say.” Ward 2 Councilman Erik DePalma said he received concerns from residents of the proposed dead end concept, which would divert traffic to Amboy Road and Route 34 and Morristown Road and Route 34. He said the intersections are dangerous noting he was involved a serious car accident four years ago. (Continued on page 8)

Sayreville municipal taxes to increase $41 for average homeowner By MATTHEW SOCKOL Staff Writer

T

he Sayreville Borough Council has adopted a $62.7 million budget to fund the operation of the municipality during 2020. The $62.7 million budget, which was adopted by council members during a recent meeting, will be supported by the collection of $33.4 million in taxes from residential and commercial property owners, according to the budget document. Other revenue includes $9.274 million in state aid and $3.56 million from surplus funds

(savings). Sayreville’s 2019 budget totaled $61.44 million and was supported by the collection of $32.7 million in taxes from property owners, according to the 2020 budget document. Other revenue included $9.27 million in state aid and $3.1 million from surplus funds. The municipal tax rate in 2019 was about $1.423 per $100 of assessed valuation. The average home in Sayreville was assessed at $144,844 and the owner of that home paid about $2,062 in municipal taxes. In 2020, the municipal tax rate is pro-

jected to increase to $1.452 cents per $100 of assessed valuation. The average home assessment is now estimated to be $144,864. The owner of that home will pay $2,103 in municipal taxes, an increase of $41. Municipal taxes are one component of a property owner’s tax bill, which also includes Middlesex County taxes and Sayreville School District taxes. Individuals pay more or less in taxes depending on the assessed value of their home and/or property, and the tax rate that is set by each taxing entity. Selected appropriations in the 2020

municipal budget include the following line items: public safety, $15.2 million; insurance, $10 million; debt, $5.52 million; statutory expenditures, $5.14 million; general government, $4.74 million; shared services, $4.19 million; public works, $3.9 million; landfill and solid waste disposal, $2.56 million; reserve for uncollected taxes, $2.49 million; unclassified, $1.78 million; education (including library), $1.69 million; utilities and bulk purchases, $1.62 million; and parks and recreation, $1.4 million.

Sayreville celebrates its Teachers of the Year

Elmo brings smiles and sweet treats to children in Central Park development

OLD BRIDGE – In times of uncertainty, Elmo, the furry red monster from Sesame Street, came to bring some joy to the children in the Central Park development. Dorit Yehudai said the Central Park development has been a wonderful place to live and raise their children and grandchildren. “We have lived in the same house for almost 30 years and wanted to show the

children in our development a few minutes of fun and excitement,” she said. Yehudai had posted the Elmo idea on social media and her son-in-law Jason Marcus made it happen. He purchased an Elmo suit and the family drove around throwing candy for the children in the development. “During this time of [the novel coronavirus pandemic] as well as other unnecessary hate we thought it would be a good time to simply spread the love,” she said.

SAYREVILLE – In a school year affected by the coronavirus pandemic, the Governor’s Educators of the Year have been named in the Sayreville School District. During a recent Board of Education meeting, a presentation was given on Sayreville’s Educators of the Year for the 2019-20 school year. At the Emma Arleth Elementary School, the teacher of the year is Amanda Taylor. “Mrs. Taylor is the kind of teacher who goes above and beyond each day in her classroom,” district administrators said. “She creates an environment that is a very caring and safe place for her students. She always has a positive attitude with her students and has a wonderful rapport with their parents and the faculty at Arleth School.” At the Dwight D. Eisenhower School, the teacher of the year is Dedrick Dye. “Mr. Dye exemplifies excellence in every facet of a teacher’s duties,” district administrators said. “He is a thorough and precise educator who meets the individual needs of his students through differentiated instruction and individual education plans. His poise and professionalism are on display each day he comes to work and allows him for him to become a leader within his grade level and school as a whole. He takes the time to make individual connections with his students and their families. His contribution to his class, school and profession is profound.” At the Harry S. Truman Elementary School, the teacher of the year is Heather Makely. “Mrs. Makely works hard to prepare her lessons and differentiate instruction for her students,” district administrators said. “She actively collaborates with teachers, families and colleagues, as well as volunteers her time and participates in many Truman events. She goes above and beyond in everything she does.” At the Woodrow Wilson Elementary School, the teacher of the year is Christina Zrowka. “Ms. Zrowka is an outstanding teacher, who is dedicated and tireless in pursuing

all critical elements of her profession,” district administrators said. “She spent her Labor Day weekend of 2019 working on a document to assist her entire grade level with integrating the components of our Fountas and Pinnell program. Mrs. Zrowka is the person who everyone on the grade level seeks advice from and is a pleasant person who can smile with colleagues and students. She has also returned to school in order to attain her master’s degree in reading. Mrs. Zrowska is an asset to our entire school community.” At the Samsel Upper Elementary School, the teacher of the year is Dena Mazur. “Mrs. Mazur stands out among her professional peers,” district administrators said. “She is a motivated individual who brings fresh new ideas, shows initiative and implements the best, most up-to-date practices for her students. Mrs. Mazur’s door is always open for her colleagues and students. She makes everything look effortless while doing it with a smile on her face. Mrs. Dena Mazur exemplifies what it means to be a hardworking, dedicated educator.” At the Sayreville Middle School, the teacher of the year is Kelly Purcell. “Ms. Purcell is a dedicated and hardworking member of the SMS staff with an enormous heart,” district administrators said. “She demonstrates her love for all our all students daily and her primary goal for this school year was to use small group instruction and math centers to address the abilities of all students in the classroom. As one of our teachers who manages the SMS Sunshine Club, she is a wonderful person who brings an amazing smile, dedication and positive attitude to the staff members of the Sayreville Middle School.” At the Sayreville War Memorial High School, the teacher of the year is James Craft. “Mr. Craft is a devoted, enthusiastic, giving and caring individual who always puts his students first,” district administrators said. “He goes above and beyond every day at the high school and his tireless efforts within the arts truly elevates our program. Traffic on Washington, REP council and musical director are just some of his amazing contributions to the school. We could not think of anyone more deserving of this honor.”

TV, Movies, Celebrities & More

The Bad And The Bumbling By David Cohea, ReMIND Magazine

E

arly TV dads were of a common stock — in black and white and pure through and through. They were tall, chiseled and white, fonts of pipe-smoking wisdom and wry, kids-willbe-kids humor. They worked day jobs and drove home to suburbia, where they were greeted by loving housewives while the young’uns flooded round. By the time the ’60s was picking up steam, it was time to let some air out of their stuffy image. The first in this evolution was the Bumbling Dad, poking fun at these lovable figures by clowning with their established moves. On The Dick Van Dyke Show, Rob Petrie (Dick Van Dyke) literally falls all over things trying to play Dad. Maybe it was

because series creator Carl Reiner asked cast members to bring in real-life experiences, which he scripted into the show; life, we found out, is loaded with shtick. Herman Munster (Fred Gwynne) of The Munsters is the dumbest of the lot, a grownup juvenile whose size and appearance is just another thing to trip over. In the wake of Vietnam War protests and Watergate, Dad as an authority figure had lost some of his shine. In the ’70s, we began to see a new version of TV dad: the Grumpy But Lovable Old Dad. Archie Bunker (Carroll O’Connor) of All in the Family is a loading dock worker whose blue-collar upbringing isn’t sitting well with a rapidly changing America. Living with Archie and his long-suffering wife Edith are grown ’60s kids, their daughter Gloria and son-in-law Mike. Every week the nation’s clash of cultures played out

with Archie on his easy-chair throne, taking all comers and showing all his frailties — and ours. In a similar vein, on Sanford and Son, Fred Sanford (Redd Foxx) is a cranky old junk dealer still in business with his son Lamont (Demond Wilson). Querulous, grandiose and silly, he doesn’t give much credit to his son, whom he usually refers to as “dummy.” But it is Fred who is usually in trouble and Lamont bailing him out of one mess or another. In the ’80s, Danny Tanner (Bob Saget) of Full House played the uncoolest of Bumbling Dads, most so because he actually thought he was the coolest daddy of ’em all — a cringeworthy assertion in any house. By the end of the ’80s, the Grumpy Old Dad morphed into an even more problematic father figure: the Bad Dad. These guys are lovable because they are so horrible. First there’s Homer Simpson (voiced by Dan Castellaneta) of The Simpsons. Homer’s a lousy provider — he held about 188 jobs in roughly 400 episodes — is lazy, has a zeal for instant gratification, is prone to fits of anger, loves beer too much and is a real dummy to boot. Yet for every banana peel of character Homer routinely slips on, he has genuine affection for his family and strives to do right by them, as when he sells his ride on the Duff Blimp in order to enter his daughter Lisa in a beauty pageant so she could feel better about herself. Al Bundy (Ed O’Neill) of Married With Children is an even more sour father figure, stuck in a lousy day job selling shoes at the mall. All of Bundy’s cherished memories are back on his high school football field. He proposed to his wife Peggy in a drunken mistake. His daughter is a flaky bimbo and his son a lustful nerd. If that’s not enough, Al is cursed with a bad back and pathological need to fix things around the house with absurd results. But the biggest joke

of all? Al Bundy loves his family and secretly knows his lousy life is his own fault. Variations of the Bumbling Dad appear in many other classic roles, like Tim Taylor of Home Improvement and Phil Dunphy of Modern Family. Many Bad Dads also followed, like Tony Soprano of The Sopranos and Arthur Spooner of The King of Queens. Cringeworthy and wretched as they are, they remain cherished in memory — maybe because they make our own bumbling and bad attempts at fatherhood look that much better — and forgivable.

Shapiro said a few years ago the New Jersey Department of Transportation (DOT) proposed a reconstruction project of Route 34 from Old Bridge to Colts Neck in attempts to make the corridor safer. The intersections included Amboy and Morristown roads intersecting Route 34. Shapiro said there was a push for a fourway stop at the intersections. For whatever reason the project was withdrawn, Shapiro said, then the DOT came to the township to present a paving project. “We brought up our original plan for that intersection and how we thought they should resurrect and put it back into the pipeline,” she said. Shapiro said DOT came back and said they couldn’t grant a four-way stop; however, with the council’s support of the paving project they could put in a three-way intersection and put in a traffic light at the intersection of Route 34 and Morristown Road near the gas station. Also once traffic improvements are implemented, traffic would only be allowed to make a right onto Amboy Road and a right onto Route 34 to the proposed traffic signal at Morristown Road. Right now traffic can make a left onto Route 34 from Amboy Road. Shapiro said the plans for the threeway intersection and traffic signal are in

the preliminary phase. She said she would provide the council with the status of the plan in the near future.

Sayreville school officials honor educational support professionals By MATTHEW SOCKOL Staff Writer

SAYREVILLE – During a school year affected by the coronavirus pandemic, the Governor’s Educational Support Services Professionals (ESP) of the Year for the Sayreville School District have been named. The ESPs of the Year for the 2019-20 school year were recognized during a presentation at a recent Board of Education meeting. At the Emma Arleth Elementary School, the ESP of the Year is Tara Giarraffa. “Ms. Giarraffa provides occupational therapy to many of our most disabled students and goes above and beyond to help these children become as independent as possible,” district administrators said. “She is one of those rare individuals who gives her all and it comes from the heart. Teachers in the building love working with Ms. Giarraffa because she is always willing to help them to help their students.” At the Dwight D. Eisenhower Elementary School, the ESP of the Year is Meg Cardillo. “Mrs. Cardillo is an integral part of Eisenhower Elementary School and the community it serves,” district administrators said. “She instills a love of reading and books in our students and provides valuable resources to our staff. Mrs. Cardillo demonstrates leadership that improves the climate and culture within the school. She takes the time to get to know all 500 of her students and works to make connections, especially with those students who need it most. Her dedication to her profession and school has had a great impact on the students and staff she works with and alongside.” At the Harry S. Truman and Woodrow Wilson Elementary Schools, the ESP of the Year is Laura Mihalenko. “Mrs. Mihalenko is the Gifted & Talented teacher for our four elementary

schools,” district administrators said. “She has presented countless workshops for her colleagues and makes a substantial contribution to each school’s environment. She is innovative, knowledgeable, helpful, respected and admired by students, teachers and parents.” At Samsel Upper Elementary School, the ESP of the Year is Michelle DiPaolo. “Mrs. DiPaolo is a valuable resource to the staff,” district administrators said. “She is instrumental in running the RTI [Response to Intervention] Committee and assisting teachers with RTI directly and our online math programs. She works to meet the needs of diverse learners and provides opportunities for students’ self-reflection. We are fortunate to have such a talented and devoted educator at the Samsel Upper Elementary School.” At the Sayreville Middle School, the ESP of the Year is Lori Dobrzynski. “Year after year, Mrs. Dobrzynski provides our students with resources and outstanding knowledge through formal instruction, as well as research-based guidance,” district administrators said. “She holds media center-based lectures and interactive lessons daily and acts as an essential support for teaching staff. Mrs. Dobrzynski is an amazing media specialist, but moreover, an amazing person.” At Sayreville War Memorial High School, the ESP of the Year is Kaila O’Donnell. “Ms. O’Donnell is a well-respected member, not only of the guidance department, but the entire high school,” district administrators said. “She has developed an outstanding rapport with the students and faculty and many seek her out for advice, assistance and direction. She is dedicated and committed to her students and her positive interactions with them reflect a high degree of comfort and trust in their relationship. Ms. O’Donnell is an exceptional school counselor and, without a doubt, deserves to be Sayreville War Memorial High School’s ESP of the Year.”

ON THE ROAD PETER PERROTTA

2020 Ford Edge ST AWD

I

n June of 2009, things looked very bleak for American automakers like, Ford, Chevy and Chrysler. Swept up in the financially crippling housing market lending bubble that burst rather abruptly, many stalwart American companies, like Ford, were literally on the verge of insolvency. Led by President Barack Obama, the government issued massive amounts of bailout money in an attempt to keep the American autoPeter Perrotta makers from withering away into the abyss. Ford took advantage of about $9 billion in line-of-credit government loans to right its ship and get itself sailing in the right direction again, while the entire country slowly emerged from this severe financial crisis. Now, more than 11 years later, companies like Ford and Chevrolet can proudly say that they survived this crisis and are once again viable economic forces on the American landscape. One of the things, Ford did, in order to become meaner and leaner in the face of this crisis was to streamline its product line. They began offering less models. Thus, they were in a better position to build higher quality cars and trucks by concentrating their production efforts on less product. The formula worked. While not perfect, most of the models in the current Ford lineup are solidly built trucks or cars that compare quite nicely with most of what the Japanese, Korean and German automakers have. My recent one week test drive in the 2020 Ford Edge ST AWD did nothing to dissuade me from that thesis. Overall I found the 2.7 liter, V-6 turbo Edge ST to be a very solid offering and contender in the very crowded two row, mid-sized crossover SUV segment. This sporty Edge is performance oriented

enough to thrill the driving enthusiast and yet, at the same time, roomy and comfortable enough to fill the needs of a cargo carrying family. This aggressively styled Edge is flashy and edgy enough to turn heads and it grips the road quite nicely through twists and turns in any kind of weather, thanks to its capable all wheel drive system. Introduced in 2007, this marks the 13th year that Ford has included the mid-sized Edge in its lineup. The 2020 model is relatively unchanged from last year’s version when the Edge did receive a fairly significant face lift. In 2019, Ford gave the Edge a new look with a significantly changed front grill, revised front and rear bumpers and more modern looking front and rear lighting elements. They laid to rest the Sport model and in its place introduced the ST, with its twin turbocharged V-6 engine. I must say, I like the new aggressive looking ST model. As an added option my Blue Met tester added a $2,695 performance package that included performance brakes; 21-inch premium painted black wheels and summer tires. The base price of the Edge ST is $43,265. The tester had $8,030 in options. When you add in the $1,245 destination charge the MSRP sticker price was $52,540. The other added options included: $4,840 for a Group A equipment package and $495 for a cold weather package. The Group A package includes: garage door opener; perimeter alarm; wireless charging pad; panoramic roof; voice activated, touch navigation system; adaptive cruise control; remote start; heated rear seats and heated and cooled front seats. The cold weather package added a heated steering wheel; front and rear all weather floor liners and a windshield wiper de-icer system. The Edge is also offered in the base model SE trim (starting at $32,195); a mid-level SEL ($35,450) and the top of the line $39,195 Titanium edition. The Edge is the only model offering the V-6. The other models come standard with a 2.0 liter, 4 cylinder turbo engine that puts out 250 horsepower. The V-6 gets a spunky 335 horse.

2020 Ford Edge ST AWD

In general the auto critics have been kind to the Edge. The folks at Consumer Reports say: “the Edge can rival a luxury car with its quiet cabin, steady ride and agile handling.” Car and Driver wrote: “ranging from adequately equipped base models to the sporting ST, the Edge offers something for everybody”. Car and Driver gave the Edge high marks for its quiet cabin, comfortable seats and plentiful standard equipment. For low marks, Car and Driver says the Edge’s interior materials were “subpar” and its handling was clumsy. To be honest, I didn’t find the interior accoutrements to be subpar. I would rate it more like average. As far as handling goes, I thought the steering could have been tighter. This Edge drives more like a luxury SUV – serving up a soft and cushy ride that at times could feel a bit squishy. The Department of Transportation’s EPA fuel economy ratings for the Edge come in at 21 miles. The EPA estimates that this Edge will cost about $1,950 a year in fuel to operate

as it uses about 4.8 gallons of gas per every 100 miles driven. In the government’s five star crash ratings test, this Edge had very strong marks, sporting a 5 star rating for its overall vehicle crash test score. It received 5 stars for front crash for both driver and passenger side, 5 stars for the side crash test and 4 stars in the rollover test. The center console infotainment system is slightly above average. While there is nothing overly impressive about the infotainment system, which mainly controls navigation, phone and audio controls, it functions quite easily and seamlessly for any of the day-to-day driving functions asked of it. Overall, I would recommend that anyone who is considering leasing or purchasing a mid-sized, two row crossover or SUV, should give serious consideration to the Ford Edge. Novenas PRAYER IS POWERFUL Oh, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine of splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this petition. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my Mother. Oh Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse in thee (3Xs). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3Xs). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. + Say this prayer 3 consecutive days and publish prayer after petition is granted. Do not despair. Additional advice and petition.
