he Sayreville Borough Council has adopted a capital ordinance appropriating $750,000 for improvements to one of the borough’s water wells. On July 20, council members adopted the capital ordinance providing for the rehabilitation and/or replacement of a well located in the Duhernal Well Fields, the borough’s water system. The improvements will be made to Well BF, according to the ordinance. Through the ordinance, officials have appropriated $750,000 from the borough’s capital improvement fund to finance the costs of the project. In addition to the rehabilitation and/or replacement of the well, the appropriation will cover all work, materials and appurtenances necessary or incidental to complete the project. In other business, the council passed separate resolutions approving liquor licenses for the following businesses during the 2020-21 licensing term: Zinel & Nell, LLC (Covello Liquor & Bar); Mitthu, Inc. H
ackensack Meridian Raritan Bay Medical Center Old Bridge unveiled a new outpatient endoscopy suite that features larger and more private preparatory and recovery bays, and a waiting/discharge lounge. The new, self-contained suite is part of the hospital’s outpatient services located in its Medical Office Building at 2 Hospital Plaza. “Patients will be able to receive endoscopy care in a new environment designed to provide a more comfortable experience, without having to travel far from home,” said Thomas Shanahan, chief hospital executive, Raritan Bay Medical Center, in a statement released on Aug. 13 by Hackensack Meridian Health. The new endoscopy suite provides the most advanced care for all gastroenterology needs, including both complex and routine procedures such as colonoscopies; upper GI endoscopies to diagnose and treat problems in the esophagus, stomach and
small intestine; pulmonary bronchoscopies and procedures to diagnose diseases of the gallbladder, biliary system, pancreas and liver, according to the statement. It will also support diagnoses and provide therapies for digestive health disorders such as acid reflux, Crohn’s disease, gastritis, peptic ulcers, gallstones, appendicitis, and more. “The new endoscopy suite’s advanced equipment and efficient layout offer an ideal setting in which to provide the highest quality of patient-centered care,” Dr. Sanjeev Nayyar, interim division director, Gastroenterology, and president, medical staff, Raritan Bay Medical Center, said in the statement. Raritan Bay Medical Center Old Bridge is currently undergoing a major revitalization with a $39 million investment expanding its Emergency Department. PROUD Gender Center offers services to address transgender health care needs
R
obert Wood Johnson University Hospital (RWJUH), in partnership with Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, has established The PROUD Gender Center of New Jersey, a comprehensive, full suite of services specifically designed to address the transgender community’s health care needs. The PROUD Gender Center of New Jersey is the first of its kind in the state to offer a broad and comprehensive range of services and experts specializing in LGBTQ care in one central location. RWJUH and Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School held a dedication and grand opening of the center on Aug. 13. “This center represents what makes our academic medical center unique,” John J. Gantner, president and chief executive officer of RWJUH, said in a prepared statement. “Through our partnership with Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School we brought together a wide range of disciplines and subject experts into a comprehensive clinical program. This type of program is only available at a small number of elite institutions nationally.” “This is an historic time for the ad-
vancement LGBTQ and transgender rights in our state and nation,” Jackie Baras, LGBT program director and LGBT health navigator for RWJUH, said in the statement. “In many ways this center is a reflection of these historic times and a culmination of a vision of all partners on our academic medical campus to address the unique health care needs of this community with a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach in one central location.” “We are excited to partner with Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital on this groundbreaking effort,” Dr. Gloria Bachmann, professor of OB-GYN, medical director of the PROUD Gender Center of New Jersey at RWJUH and director of the Women’s Health Institute at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, said in the statement. “Working together, we are committed to offering inclusive and innovative programs that address our diverse community’s health care needs.” The center features a highly experienced, multidisciplinary team specializing in transgender health that offers a broad range of hormonal therapy and surgical procedures to support the transition of transgender patients.

Family Forever By Paul Hall
J
ack (Micheál Richardson) is in the middle of a divorce and the gallery he manages in London is about to be ripped out from under his guidance, mainly because it is owned by his soon-tobe ex-wife’s parents. All he knows and all he believes he is made of is wrapped up in his work there, so he will do everything to get the money to purchase the building for himself — which leads him back to his father in the new film Made in Italy. Robert Forester (Liam Neeson) was an accomplished artist but more notably, is Jack’s father. The two have rarely spoken since the death of their wife and mother. Now they must come together to sell the family home in Italy, which they both own half of, if Jack is going to raise the money for the gallery. While things have been icy between Jack and Robert, the journey back to Italy provides an opportunity for them to learn
more about each other than they ever bothered to in the years that have passed. But, time together does not always mean quality time. Sometimes it takes restoring the old to the new to bring out the best in all of us. Along the way we are graced with colorful characters like Natalia (Valeria Bilello) the local restaurateur who endears herself to both of the men with her cooking and Kate (Lindsay Duncan), the real estate agent who is showing the dump — or should I say home — that needs a lot of work. These women have different stories but all are made in Italy. As I journeyed through the countryside with the characters created in Made in Italy, I became enthralled by the simplicity of it all. The importance of family and those whom we consider family is never more evident than in Made in Italy. Richardson is the real-life son of Neeson and the late Natasha Richardson, which only enhanced my love of the film. The two men give us a relationship onscreen
that many fathers and sons experience. It’s an unspoken love that neither knows quite how to move forward with. Jack longs for his father’s approval while Robert just doesn’t want to hurt his son. Bilello’s Natalia helps viewers understand that not every life is perfect and that’s OK. Family matters to all of these characters. She is the warmth to the icy relationship between the men. And then there is the picturesque views from the home. I looked out at the beauty that surrounds the pain and the tranquility engulfing the anxiety and it is absolutely breathtaking. I could have used more of these juxtapositions in the film, as they brought a level of peace to me as a viewer and a notion of all being right in the world. I loved the way Made in Italy helped
me to draw forth my personal experiences and add peace to my own life. It is a farfrom-perfect film, but the mix of comedic moments with true emotion made for a wonderful diversion from life. I would like more of the countryside, more of the views and more of the beauty of old world Italy, but I’ll happily settle for this smorgasbord of good friends and warm feelings. Family forever. Paul’s Grade: B Made in Italy Rated R Stars: Liam Neeson, Micheál Richardson, Valeria Bilello Director: James D’Arcy Available now on OnDemand and in select theaters.
Why didn’t ‘Modern Love’ on Prime get more Emmy love? Question: None of the actresses from Modern Love on Prime got nominated in a comedy. Why do you think? —Mike, N.J. Matt Roush: There are so many regrettable oversights, and it gets worse each year, it seems, as the number of submissions grows — this year by a full 15% — while the amount of content continues to swell. (I imagine many more of these complaints in the near future!) So many performers from that wonderful Modern Love anthology series could have been recognized (only Dev Patel made the cut) — besides Anne Hathaway, who definitely deserved attention as a bipolar romantic, I could make an argument for Jane Alexander, Julia Garner, Andrew Scott, John Slattery and Tina Fey (imagine the Emmys giving up a chance to honor her) and especially Cristin Milioti in my favorite vignette about the single city dweller
and the doorman (Laurentiu Possa) who kept watch over her. But then you look at who got nominated in this very competitive category, which favors sketch acts and Saturday Night Live guest performers/hosts, and also this year included Bette Midler in The Politician, Wanda Sykes’ terrific cameo as Mobs Mabley in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Maya Rudolph (one of two nominations) as the Judge in The Good Place, and what seems like a snub turns out to be an embarrassment of riches. ‘Say Yes To The Dress’ Star Randy Fenoli Talks New Season, Favorite Episodes And One Very Special Dress By Barb Oates
I
f there’s one thing fashion designer and host of TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress Randy Fenoli can offer during these more uncertain times, it’s his inspiration and upbeat outlook that finds the beauty in every person he encounters. While wedding season looks a lot different this year, Say Yes to the Dress (Saturdays) shot the new season prior to shutdowns so there’s plenty of muchmissed drama to fill your time. Here, Fenoli discusses his favorite episode of the show this season, what it’s like meeting fans, and offers a glimpse of his life off-camera. This season, Fenoli shares, “There are a couple of moments that were the most exciting for me personally. One was when they called me downstairs for a fitting, which is kind of rare. I usually don’t go into fittings. I walked in and the bride is standing in my dress, but it’s the first style I ever put down the runway, Style 101, that I designed back in 1993. Her mother bought the dress from me at a trunk show that I did at Kleinfeld back in 1993 and wore the dress on her wedding day. And now her daughter was wearing it for [her] ceremony. I walked
in and saw her in the dress, it was one of the most unbelievable feelings of my life, just to see one of my original designs being used again by a bride. It was really touching.” As far as fan encounters go, “they become more and more crazy. I have to tell you, it’s hard to leave the house anymore. Even with my mask on, they still recognize me. I have a home down in Florida, and literally one day … a couple years ago, I was driving through the drive-thru at Wendy’s [short on time as he prepped for a hurricane] and placed my order, got up to the window, and there were six people hanging out the window. She goes, “I told you, I could tell by his voice.” Despite a hectic travel schedule, Fenoli does find time to enjoy some favorite movies, sharing that his list of favorites includes “… probably a dozen. I am a movie fanatic. Honestly, when I say there’s at least a dozen, I mean it. I love Moulin Rouge! … The Hunger Games … The Matrix … 9 to 5. Comedies. Steel Magnolias. The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Anything with Jennifer Lawrence.
Passengers. I could watch anything. I love movies.” As for television, Fenoli adds, “I watch shows that I can get in and out of, because I travel so much and my lifestyle is so crazy. But basically anything on the Food Network I love. From Chopped to Beat Bobby Flay to Guy’s Grocery Games. If I don’t have the news on all day long, I usually have the Food Network on all day long because I love to cook — I used to be a personal chef.”

Elvis Owning A Piece Of The King One Lifelong Collector Shows How Being A Fan Means There’s Never Enough Elvis. By David Cohea, ReMIND Magazine
J
oe Krein, from upstate New York, became an Elvis fan at age 12 when his grandmother gave him a stash of LPs and 45s. He says he was into a lot of bands back then, but there was something about Elvis that had him hooked. He started out collecting “all the [Elvis] vinyl” he could find. He’d heard that the first album fetched a good price and was so proud when he was able to buy one used. “I thought I was in the money,” he says. “I didn’t even consider that long scratch right down the middle.” Eventually a collector taught him the basics. “The first thing he told me is that it’s not how much you own, but the quality of what you have,” he says. “And quality means provenance, condition and rarity.” Krein especially likes ’50s-era memorabilia, from when Elvis was first making it big. There are plenty of collectibles from the era, as Elvis’ image was licensed for a universe of items sold to young consumers — record players, bracelets, toy guitars, bubble gum cards, autograph books — even dog tags, after Elvis went into the Army. Elvis’ recording career hit a lull in the ’60s, resulting in slim pickings for collectors — records and movie paraphernalia, mostly. His image in the Hollywood glare became more reserved, his movies grew formulaic, and popular music moved on. Then came his ’68 comeback TV special. At 33 years old, reunited with his
old band and sporting a variety of jawdropping outfits, the Presley swagger came roaring back, and soon the floodgates of superstardom opened wide again for him. The next year, he opened a four-week gig at the International Hotel in Las Vegas, and his flashy, lip-curling, hip-flinging performances told everyone the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll was back. He went on to perform more than 600 sell-out shows in Vegas, completely redefining the Vegas spectacle for generations to come. For Elvis collectors, there is a mother lode of Elvis Vegas collectibles to be had, from menus (festooned with Elvis’ image), table cards, posters, postcards, matchboxes, dice and swizzle sticks. Krein says that ’70s memorabilia is another favorite he collects — pins, tour programs and posters, jewelry, belt buckles, lipstick cases. After the King’s death in 1977, Elvis memorabilia flooded the market. One source, according to Krein, is an aunt of Presley who was living at Graceland; afraid she was soon going to get thrown out, “she sold stuff off left and right.” Joan Deary was the curator of Elvis Presley records at RCA when Colonel Tom Parker sold the record company rights to all previously unreleased Elvis recordings. Deary found an amazing hoard of tapes at Graceland, recordings that became the basis of a six-LP Golden Celebration set released in 1984. While she was there, Deary loaded up stacks and stacks of acetates (master pressings never intended for general release), one of which eventually ended up in Krein’s collection — the single “G.I. Blues,” released in 1960 when the movie of the same name was in the theaters. The collecting business was one thing before the internet, with more face-to-face

selling at fan conventions. eBay changed things considerably, making collecting Elvis a more anonymous and pricey enterprise. Krein, who launched his own website (elvis2001.net) as a way to meet up with other collectors, says the Elvis collecting field is not quite what it was — it’s gotten too expensive for many collectors. But then there are always new fans coming into the fold, bringing new excitement. Asked if he had any suggestions for newbie collectors, Krein pointed to record shows, Elvis Week celebrations and fan clubs as a great way to find collectible items. He also offered a few words of warning to new Elvis collectors. “First of all, stay away from autographs. There are so many fakes.” He said that when Elvis toured, fans often got fake autographs from crew

members. “If someone can make money on an Elvis item, it can and often will be counterfeited.” Krein displays his Elvis collectibles in a specially outfitted den dressed up to look like a diner, complete with booths, a tabletop jukebox, a bar, a vintage aqua cigarette dispenser, framed posters and other memorabilia, display cases, and racks of LPs, videos and CDs. To call it an Elvis shrine would be a gross understatement, but it serves much of the same purpose for Krein. “I love to just go in there and think.” Editorial: 732-358-5200 Fax: 732-385-8868 Email: news@njsuburban.com Sports Email:

Additionally, the council passed a resolution awarding a contract with Panoramic Window and Door Systems, Inc., Stockton, for window replacement at the Sayreville Senior Center in an amount not to exceed $64,000. Sayreville appoints new supervisor By MATTHEW SOCKOL Staff Writer
SAYREVILLE – A new supervisor of elementary education has been named in the Sayreville School District. On July 21, the Board of Education approved the transfer of Pamela Schleck to the position of supervisor of elementary education. Previously, Schleck served as the ASI (Academic Support Instruction) reading teacher at the Woodrow Wilson Elementary School. The transfer took effect on Aug. 17 and will run through the end of the 202021 school year, as of June 30, 2021, after which Schleck may be reappointed by the board. According to district administrators, she will receive a salary of $101,226 for 2020-21, which comprises a base salary of $100,226 and a $1,000 longevity stipend. “We did a pretty comprehensive search,” Superintendent of Schools Richard Labbe said. “[Assistant Superintendent Marilyn] Shediack convened an interview committee and we interviewed many strong candidates for the open position of elementary supervisor. I couldn’t be more pleased with the selection that committee came up with.

“Mrs. Schleck is somebody who I’ve known since I came to the district,” he continued. “As I said to the personnel committee earlier today, she has always impressed me with her incredible proficiency when it comes to the curriculum, particularly in English Language Arts. For the past several years, she has served as a reading specialist, not only providing incredible reading instruction to the students she served so dedicatedly, but to the staff at the Wilson school. “Her competency with regard to pedagogy and instructional strategies is unmeasured. She is just that exceptional. However, what impresses me the most about Mrs. Schleck is her leadership. Well before she interviewed for this position, she has always impressed and inspired me by her ability to lead. As many of our teachers do, she has been an incredibly strong leader at the Wilson school. “And lastly, you couldn’t ask for a greater person. She is one of the most caring people who I have ever met, she loves children, she loves educating children and she loves leading teachers in educating children. Therefore, it gives me great pride to ask you [the board] to please appoint as our new elementary supervisor of education, Mrs. Pamela Schleck,” Labbe said.

PRAYER IS POWERFUL Oh, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine of splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this petition. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my Mother. Oh Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse in thee (3Xs). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3Xs). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. + Say this prayer 3 consecutive days and publish prayer after petition is granted. Do not despair. Additional advice and petition.
