Final steel structure placed on new Emergency Department at Raritan Bay Medical Center

H

ackensack Meridian Raritan Bay Medical Center Old Bridge recently held a topping off ceremony to celebrate the final steel structure being placed on the new Emergency Department, a 24,000-square-feet expansion project that will more than double the current footprint. The topping-off event marks a major construction milestone, symbolizing the completion of the expansion’s structural phase. Raritan Bay Medical Center leadership and team members, were on hand to sign the steel structure before it was raised, according to information provided by Hackensack Meridian Health. “Our Emergency Department has successfully served central New Jersey for more than four decades,” Thomas Shanahan, chief hospital executive, Raritan Bay Medical Center said in the statement. “We simply outgrew the existing footprint. The new expansion will create a modern facility that can meet the evolving needs of our patients and solidify our commitment to providing the best patient-centered care to our growing community.” Construction on the expansion began in October 2019 and represents Hackensack Meridian Health’s commitment to the community, with a $39 million investment.

The new state-of-the-art Emergency Department will provide safer, faster arrivals by adding ambulance bays, newly designed pediatric rooms, behavioral health and new on-site technology with equipment that will provide more accurate diagnostics and treatment, according to the statement. In addition, a new hospital concourse, main entrance, and lobby will modernize the facility and link all three hospital buildings. The medical center will also be more accessible with increased parking and better wayfinding. “We are really starting to see the vision of this state-of-the-art facility come to life,” William DiStanislao, executive site director and vice president of Operations, Raritan Bay Medical Center Old Bridge, said in the statement. “It’s amazing how it has already transformed landscape of our hospital campus.” The expansion was designed and constructed by Stantec and Turner Construction, a collaborative joint venture. The project remains on schedule and is expected to open to the public in December 2021. For more information, visit www.rbmc. org.

County College sees rise in number of high school students taking college courses By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

I

n an effort to prepare himself for Advanced Placement (AP) exams in calculus and physics, Avinash Kumar signed up for classes at Middlesex County College. It was the summer of 2017 before his sophomore year of high school. “At the time, my high school, the Middlesex County Academy for Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Technologies, did not offer many AP courses,” he said. “While this did not prevent me from taking the AP exams, it did put me at a severe disadvantage when it came to preparing for the exams.” Kumar, of Edison, has joined a growing number of students who are taking advan-

tage taking classes at Middlesex County College (MCC) while still in high school. “We’ve seen extensive growth over the past three years,” said Kimberlee Hooper, director of K-12 Partnerships at MCC. The number of high school students taking MCC classes has gone from just under 1,800 in 2017-18 to more than 3,100 in 2019-20 – a jump of almost 60%, Hooper said. Hooper said she believes two major factors play are role in the growth. “First, school districts are organizing and promoting options for their students better, making sure they understand they have numerous post-high school choices,” she said. For example, some students would be best served by earning a certificate in a

short amount of time, and then going into the workforce. For others, a two-year degree that leads to a job is most appropriate, and for others, a two-year degree and then transferring to a four-year school is the right path, Hooper said. “That’s where we come in because of our flexibility and low cost,” she said, noting that is the second factor. “High school students can take a three or four credit class for $125, including tuition and fees. Parents love that they can save literally thousands of dollars by having their kids take classes that will transfer to a four-year institution.” Other advantages include allowing students to get used to the college experience, the amount of work, and what is expected of them in a college setting.

“It allows you to build up your academic profile and it helps solidify your career goals,” Hooper said. “You may think you are interested in one field, but after taking a class or two, decide that it’s not for you. It’s much better to find that out before you are too far along.” For Kumar, he gained experience in balancing the challenging workload of his MCC courses and his usual high school workload. “I pulled through largely due to my extremely supportive MCC professors and having developed a much stronger work ethic,” he said. In June, he graduated from the Middlesex County Academy for Science, Mathematics and Engineering Technologies.

Children’s book based on twin brothers’ adventures is published posthumously By JENNIFER AMATO Managing Editor

A

loving woman who is missing her younger sister decided to publish the sister’s children’s book posthumously to continue her legacy. Patricia David, of the Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick, published a new children’s book, “The Adventures of Kiko and Pez” on Aug. 4 by Mascot Books, after her sister Jane Jimenez passed away last year. Kiko and Pez are twin brothers who love to get into mischief and seem to attract trouble wherever they go. A blend of fiction and memoir, the characters of Kiko and Pez were inspired by the Jimenezes’ sons. All of the proceeds go to Jimenez’s sons and their college funds, according to Anna-Marie Mapes of Mascot Books. According to information provided by David, Jimenez was born on Oct. 22, 1965, in the Bronx, N.Y., the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas LeBlanc. The family is from the Commonwealth of Dominica in the West Indies. She attended Cardinal Spellman High School in the Bronx and earned a degree in business administration from Iona College, New Rochelle, N.Y. Jane married Ray Jimenez on Aug. 27, 1993, in New York. She was the proud mother of twin boys Josh and Randy. She moved to Florida and Georgia where she raised her family. “She was well known for her hospitality, her infectious smile and her tasteful cooking – pastelitos and others. One of her greatest joys was to be with her sons, her husband and her dog Dennis. “Family and faith in the Lord were important aspects of her life. On any given day you could hear her singing one of her favorite songs, ‘Three Little Birds’ by Bob Marley – ‘Don’t worry ‘bout a thing ‘cause every little thing gonna be all right.’ This has become the theme and logo for the family,” David said. Jimenez fell sick in 2017 and survived for 10 months. She passed away on May 20, 2018. “From the first day to her last, she never wanted to burden anyone with her illness and kept it from most of the family. “When she would check in on her family and friends she always asked how they were doing and what could she do for them. “During her last moments with her father – who recently passed away in July

– she said she found faith and she trusted God with her future. This lifted such a burden off his shoulders and gave him peace. “She died peacefully at home in Georgia, surrounded by her family. She was taken too soon and many of the relatives

refuse to believe she is gone and are doing everything they can to keep her memory and spirit alive,” David said. Known as Cookie, Janie and Cook Cooks, Jimenez was always dabbling in one thing or another; as a stay-at-home mother she had a lot of energy coupled with a great imagination, David said. “She dreamed about writing books for a long time and she would always use her surroundings as the ingredients to tell a great story. After she passed, we realized she had been writing as far back as 2015. “She wrote an alphabet book based on animals with names, and Kiko and Pez which had gone through a series of names before we landed on this one. “She wrote to publishers hoping to get a thumbs up. In some cases she was either denied or never got a response, but she kept sending them out. She was relentless,” David said. David said her sister, during her darker moments alone, also found solace in painting and writing positive messages that she hung all over her home. Her signature was three little birds. Jimenez had always dreamed about having a large family reunion, but never got it off the ground. Three months after her death, David and her husband have been hosting family members for a week at the end of the summer.

“The family came from all corners of the world to reconnect. We make the themes around Cookie and others we have lost along the way,” David said. “We knew she really wanted to get this book published so I asked Ray, her husband, for the documents and said I was going to finish what Cookie started. I had no idea about how to get her book published, but I did some research and settled on Mascot publishing. “We had everything we needed: editors, illustrators, designers and marketers. We signed with them about a year ago. I got Ray and the twin boys involved to help the illustrator with the designs and the layout. “We were all happy the editor did not suggest any additions except for basic grammar and spelling. Cookie’s book was finished. It took about 12 months from the time we started and got it done just in time for the second anniversary of her death,” David said. When David first read the plot she was surprised it was loosely based on several family members. Her twin boys are best friends and the book highlights their unconditional friendship no matter what; in real life she raised them to have a built in friendship that was unbreakable and that is seen in the book and is evidenced even today as they are in college, she said. There is a scene in the book about reptiles which is patterned after Cookie’s niece Sammy, who is a herpetologist in a zoo where she takes care of reptiles. Another angle in the book is to celebrate single mothers and is patterned after all of the strong women in the family who take care of anything that comes their way, David said. A copy of her book is buried with Jimenez and with her parents in the Commonwealth of Dominica. “This was truly a labor of love and teaches our entire family that when you say you are going to do something you do it. And you help others take their goals to the finish line. “Her sons are thrilled knowing they are not only characters in their mom’s book, but that her wish to be a writer and her legacy will live on forever,” David said. “The Adventures of Kiko and Pez” is written by Jane Jimenez and illustrated by Walter Policelli. U.S. Postal Service launches new election mail website

A

s part of its ongoing effort to ensure that voters and election officials have the information they need to successfully use the U.S. Mail to vote in the November general election, the U.S. Postal Service has launched a new election mail website. The website, which provides clear and concise information about voting by mail, is available 24/7 by visiting usps.com/ votinginfo. The postal service recognizes that many states are choosing to expand mail-

in voting options in the upcoming elections and that there will likely be a significant increase in demand among postal customers to participate in those elections by using the mail, according to a statement provided on Aug. 21. In response, the postal service has updated its website to serve both voting customers seeking information on how to use the mail to vote and election officials seeking resources to help make their administration of the upcoming elections a success. For domestic voters, the website pro-

vides direct links to federal election resources as well as links to state-specific resources. For overseas and military voters, the new site provides additional information, including links to resources supporting their election participation. The site also highlights what the postal service views as the most critical information for voters who opt to vote through the U.S. Mail: that, in requesting or casting a mail-in ballot, they not only must comply with their local jurisdictions’ requirements, but also should start the process early. allow sufficient time for voters to receive, complete and return ballots via the mail, the postal service strongly recommends that voters request ballots at the earliest point allowable, but no later than 15 days prior to the election date, according to the statement. The postal service also recommends that voters mail their ballots at least one week prior to their states’ due dates to allow for timely receipt by election officials. Voters should contact their local election officials for further information about deadlines and other requirements. In addition, the site provides resources to state and local election officials as part of the postal service’s ongoing efforts to partner with such officials to make the elections a success. The site guides election officials in contacting postal service personnel to discuss how they can design their mailings in a manner that comports with postal regulations, improves mail piece visibility and ensures efficient processing as well as timely delivery, according to the statement. The site also provides links to information, such as the official 2020 Official Election Mail Kit (Kit 600) and the State and Local Election Officials User’s Guide (Publication 632), both of which were distributed to 11,500 election officials earlier this year. The U.S. Postal Service remains fully committed to fulfilling its role in the electoral process when policymakers choose to use our services in administering elections. The postal service can fully handle and deliver the anticipated increase in election mail volume and is continuing to coordinate with state and local election officials through November, according to the statement. Election officials and voters are being asked to be mindful of the postal service’s established delivery standards and consider how the mail actually works, so that voters have adequate time to request, receive, complete and send their mail-in ballots, according to the statement. The postal service will continue to do everything in its power to efficiently handle and deliver election mail, including ballots, in a manner consistent with the proven processes and procedures that have been relied upon for years, according to the statement. The postal service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.

College (Continued from page 1)

In August he graduated from Middlesex County College with an associate’s degree in math. He was named a 2020 National Merit Scholarship winner. This fall, Kumar will attend the New Jersey Institute of Technology on a full scholarship as part of the accelerAvinash Kumar ated BS/MS (bachelor’s and master’s degree) program at NJIT’s Albert Dorman Honors College. He is planning a career in information technology. “MCC served as a bridge between high school and NJIT,” he said. “The class sizes were small and the professors were supportive.” For high school students thinking about taking college courses during their high school years, Kumar suggests starting as early as possible and introducing “yourself to your professor and let them know about your situation either before or during the first class.” Hooper said another factor in the growth was outreach to charter and nonpublic schools in the area. MCC went from serving 22 schools in 2016 to 37 today. “In the past, many of the parents were focused on four-year schools, but we’ve been reaching out to explain why we’re a viable option,” she said. “It’s becoming a great resource for their students. They especially like hearing about MCC’s transfer agreements.” East Brunswick High School now offers a dual degree program with MCC, and three districts – Middlesex Borough, South Plainfield and Colonia – are developing the programs. “Just like Mr. Kumar, students can actually earn a college degree while still in high school,” Hooper said, adding she expects several students will graduate from MCC in May 2021 and East Brunswick High School the following month. “Most lean toward our liberal arts majors, but we also have students interested in science and business,” she said. “Essentially, they can set their own pathway. Our hope is that we’re part of the process for these students, whether it’s one course, or 10 courses, or a degree.”

COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD The YMCA of Greater Monmouth County is introducing new child care options and academic programming this fall. The YMCA is launching the “Y Academy” in September to provide convenient, flexible and affordable options for children in grades K-6, whose schedules are split between in-person and virtual learning. Parents will have options, with children attending two or three days a week from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. or 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Y Academy will be available at the Freehold Family YMCA, Freehold Borough YMCA Community Center, and Matawan Child Achievement Center. The Y plans to offer the Y Academy at the Old Bridge Family YMCA and Red Bank Family YMCA, pending licensing, and community sites are also under consideration depending on interest. Also new this fall is a full-day kindergarten program for families who prefer inperson classroom instruction. Young learners will engage in an academic curriculum, physical fitness, and social and emotional learning activities. The kindergarten program will be available in September at the Freehold Family YMCA’s Enrichment Center and Matawan Child Achievement Center. It will run 9

a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays, with extended care available at 7 a.m. and until 6 p.m. Children will be placed in small groups and all safety guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and local health departments will be strictly followed. Staff and children will be required to wear masks (with scheduled mask breaks for children). Health screenings will be mandatory at parent drop off and both parent and child will be temperature checked. The Y will also resume before and after school care in the following school districts: Atlantic Highlands, Fair Haven, Freehold Borough, Freehold Township, Highlands, Little Silver, Manalapan/Englishtown, Matawan, Middletown Township, Millstone, Monmouth Beach, Shrewsbury, Spring Lake Heights and West Long Branch. Additionally, the Y provides child care for infants to preschoolers at the Freehold Family YMCA and an academic pre-school program at the Matawan Child Achievement Center. IMPROVEYOUR LAWN THIS FALL! We Can Help By Aerating & Overseeding!

Compacted soil and heavy thatch are the two biggest obstacles to a beautiful lawn. They tend to suffocate grass plants by preventing air, water, and nutrients from reaching the root zone. This means your lawn looks less than satisfactory in spite of adequate fertilization, water, and tender loving care! Aeration opens up the thatch and helps relieve compaction. It should be a regular part of your annual lawn maintenance program. Aeration is accomplished by the use of a machine equipped with cylinder-like spoons designed to penetrate and shatter the soil. Half inch diameter plugs of thatch and soil are actually pulled from the ground during this process. The plunging action of the spoons into the ground opens up the soil-allowing the grass plants to breathe and promoting deeper, healthier roots.

Major benefits of aeration...

• Increases air, water, and nutrient movement to the root zone • Intensifies decomposition of thatch • Helps relieve soil compaction • Stimulates new growth • Improves drainage • Provides a better environment for overseeding • Increases the effectiveness of applied fertifizers & control products • Incorporates organic matter into the soil • Increases tolerance to heat and cold

ON THE ROAD PETER PERROTTA

2020 Mercedes Benz CLS450 4matic Coupe

W

hen you work selling Mercedes Benz automobiles for a living, it’s akin to being a kid in a candy store. Everywhere you look there’s plenty of luxuriously expensive cars to look at, feel and drive. More than 10 years ago, I exclusively sold Mercedes, working at one of the more prestigious dealerships in South Jersey. As part of our sales training – to get superior product knowledge – it was expected of us Peter Perrotta to drive each and every model in an effort to familiarize ourselves with that car so that when we took our clients on test drives we would be prepared for the multitude of questions customers have when considering whether or not to purchase that car. I must admit that even back then – and to this day – the Mercedes Benz CLS Coupe was one of my absolute favorite vehicles to drive. So I can honestly say that when I was scheduled to test drive and review the 2020 Mercedes Benz CLS450 4matic Coupe, it brought a broad smile to my face. It also revived a lot of memories from my car selling days at the dealership. After spending a week behind the wheel of this luxurious beauty of a car, my opinion hasn’t changed. It remains one of the finest production automobiles on the market – albeit it doesn’t come cheaply. Marketed from Mercedes as a four-door coupe, the CLS was originally designed in 2001 by noted designer Michael Fink. Fink was also noted for styling the first genera-

tion CLK, the C class sport coupe and the Maybach 57 and 62. The first thing one notices about the CLS Coupe is that it isn’t a coupe at all. While its named and badged as a coupe, it actually is a four-door vehicle that simply looks like a coupe due to its aggressively low stance and swooping and curved exterior design. In its overview for its review of this model for 2020, the folks at Car and Driver had this to say: “The CLS-class is a study in contradictions, but one thing that’s clear is its commitment to luxury and performance. It has four doors, yet Mercedes markets it as a coupe (you can thank its fastback styling for that choice).” Once you get past doing the double take of “Wow, this is a four-door coupe” and you slide yourself into the opulent cabin inside, your senses are immediately overwhelmed with the simply luxurious feel of this car. If I was forced to give an analogy, it’s much like trying on a pair of soft hand made Spanish leather boots. No one has to tell you that there’s quality in this product. You just feel it right away. The soft leather contour seats immediately grab you when you slip into this car and the swooping design and ergonomics are such that you almost become one with the car. All around you is luxury at this point – from the piano lacquer trim to the sleek and shiny infotainment screen and the old, but new styled dashboard clock, luxury abounds. After you get done gasping, and finally reach for that push button start, the smoothness and powerfulness of the ride of this beast doesn’t disappoint. This car is at once luxurious but at the same time, quick, extremely powerful and very athletic. I took my CLS tester on a bit of a road

trip to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where when you get out on the remote stretches of the Pennsylvania Turnpike the speed limit shoots up to 70 mph. Most motorists are cruising along at more than 80 mph out there. At 80 mph and upward, this car is barely breaking a sweat or even breathing hard. This car is most definitely a vehicle that one can push to high speeds and still feel extremely confident that you are in full control at all times. The 2020 CLS450 4matic Coupe is powered by a smooth 3.0 liter turbo charged inline six cylinder engine that is paired with a 48 volt hybrid assist system Mercedes calls EQ boost. This winning combination provides output of 362 horsepower and 369 pound feet of torque. The nine speed transmission works well with this EQ engine set up as well. In real time, on the road, driving there isn’t much this car can’t do. Of course, all of this fine elegance, power and athleticism doesn’t come cheap. There is a price to be paid. My tester model carried a base price of $72,450. However, after adding a whole host of expensive options and adding in the destination charge, the bottom line sticker price comes in at $99,125.

The car I drove for a week had an exterior color called “designo Arabian Gray” – which I wasn’t all that fond of. I would have preferred a simple black or white. The charge for the paint option on this car is a breath taking $4,900. Some of the other option packages on this car included: $5,500 for a designo interior styling package that includes soft nappa leather seats and a suede headliner; $2,250 for a driver assistance package; $1,320 for the contoured massaging front seats; $1,450 for a wireless charging system for your phone and a whole lot more. For a vehicle with this much power, the gas mileage is rather impressive. The EPA gas mileage rating on this car comes in at 26 miles per gallon overall – with 30 mpg in highway driving and 23 in city driving. The average estimated annual fuel cost for driving a CLS comes in at $1,900 per year as this car consumes about 3.9 gallons of gas per every 100 miles driven. This vehicle was not crash test rated by the government yet.

NJSIAA moves forward with plan for high school sports

T

he New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association’s Sports Advisory Task Force has released its Return to Sports Plan which provides detailed schedules for fall and winter high school sports. The dates for the spring sports season will be announced at a later date; the task force recognizes the need to maximize the 2021 spring season due to the loss of the 2020 spring sports season during the height of the 2020 coronavirus pandemic, according to an Aug. 20 press release from the NJSIAA. The outdoor fall sports – football, cross country, field hockey, girls tennis and soccer – will begin practice on Sept. 14.

Girls tennis will begin competition on Sept. 28. Cross country, field hockey and soccer will begin competition on Oct. 1. The opening day for the football season will be Oct. 2. The indoor fall sports – gymnastics and girls volleyball – will be moved to a new, special season that will begin with practices on Feb. 16 and competition on March 3, according to the press release. If circumstances change and the NJSIAA is unable to have a fall season, the outdoor fall sports will also be played at that time (beginning March 3). Winter sports teams may begin practicing on Dec. 3. Winter sport competition

T

will begin on Dec. 21. All of these dates are subject to change based on guidance from Gov. Phil Murphy and the New Jersey Department of Health, according to the press release. The Sports Advisory Task Force’s goals were to ensure health and safety; promote participation, not championships; limit travel; and stay flexible in the face of changing circumstances, according to the press release. With these principles in mind, schedules will be condensed, competition will be local, out-of-state competition will be prohibited (unless a waiver is granted for exceptional circumstances), and post-season play will be limited and local, with no

statewide championships. “We are extremely appreciative of the support and guidance from Gov. Murphy, Sen. Paul Sarlo and Assemblyman Benjie Wimberly,” NJSIAA Chief Operating Officer Colleen Maguire said. “Our kids need structured activity and we believe that education-based high school sports is the best way to provide it. Giving teenagers extra motivation to stay COVID-free promotes healthy outcomes for everyone,” Maguire said. Resident Gail Thompson is organizing a group of handcrafters who will demonstrate what they create to the public. Each person should display a craft, such as pottery, hand embroidery, origami, jewelry, drawing, painting and nature weaving.

COMMUNITY BULLETIN BOARD The First Presbyterian Church of Sayreville will hold a flea market on Sept. 12. The rain date is Sept. 19. It will take place in the church parking lot at 172 Main Street, across from Borough Hall, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
