Five candidates will vie for three available three-year terms on Old Bridge Board of Education By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

Blood drive will impact 160 lives More than 40 blood donors supported the Old Bridge Elks blood drive on Sept. 29 with their lifesaving blood. One unit of blood can help up to three different patients, so 162 lives will be impacted from this blood drive. The blood supply is at a dangerously low level due to COVID-19, so New Jersey Blood Services is desperately seeking large venues where blood drives can be held while maintaining social distancing. For more information on hosting a blood drive, email SLynch@nybc.org. To donate blood, sign up at http://tinyurl.com/donatebloodnj. Information on donor eligibility and COVID-19 precautions is available at http://nybc.org/coronavirus

ive candidates will vie for the three, three-year terms available on the Old Bridge Board of Education for the election in November. The candidates include incumbents Jill L. Decaro, Lisa Lent and Matthew Anthony Sulikowski; former board member Frank Weber; and newcomer Allison T. Vass. Sulikowski is running on the For the People slate and Weber is running on the Affordable Quality Education slate. The general election is on Nov. 3. Jill DeCaro, 55, has lived in the township for 22 years. She is married with three children, ages 27, 25 and 23, who all graduated from the Old Bridge Public School District. DeCaro earned an associate’s degree in dental hygiene from Union County College. She previously was employed as a dental hygienist and now is pursuing a career in real estate. In the community, she served on the Project Graduation Executive Committee for approximately 10 years, served as a volunteer for Parent Teacher Associations (PTA) for more than 20 years and held multiple board positions, a volunteer Parish School of Religion teacher at St. Ambrose for approximately 10 years, led fundraising efforts for the SWS Rebels executive board when her children played sports, and served as volunteer coordinator for the Shore Aide Telethon Executive Committee that provided aid to those affected by Superstorm Sandy in 2012. DeCaro is completing her first term on the school board. “I have helped see this district through some of our most difficult times, but there is still more work to do,” she said. “I understand the importance of listening to all sides to be able to make informed decisions for the good of the district. My only agenda is to help strengthen student achievement at all levels while doing my best to remain fiscally responsible.”

DeCaro said the board is currently in a “reactive” rather than a “proactive” environment dealing with a global pandemic and budget constraints. “While those things are the forefront of the discussions, moving forward I would like to focus on parent communication as I believe there is always room for improvement in that area,” she said. Lisa Lent, 43, has lived in the township for about 20 years. She is married with one son, a graduate of Old Bridge High School, who is currently serving as a lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps. She earned a master’s degree in accounting and business. She has been employed as director of human resources for a Broadway Theater Company for 24 years. In the community, Lent has volunteered for several animal charities and serves as treasurer for the Old Bridge Animal Volunteers Charity. Lent is completing her first term on the school board. “I am running for re-election for the Board of Education (BOE) because I feel that my business and accounting background can help navigate our district through the many challenges we are facing,” she said. “Fiscal responsibility is key for our success. Between the budget cuts and national pandemic it is important to have BOE members who strive to ensure that our children have the best environment for learning. A healthy balance between safety and success for not only the students, but also the teachers.” If re-elected, Lent said her two main concerns would be the budget and virtual learning. “We are facing major budget cuts so we need someone who will help keep fiscal responsibility,” she said. “I can make the difficult budget decisions to help create an environment that benefits everyone. ”Virtual learning would be my second area of concentration. I was a single working mom and understand how difficult it is for working parents to have their children (Continued on page 3)

learning virtually. The safety of our students and teachers are first and foremost, but we need board members who are willing to listen and work for everyone in our community. I will help preserve the voice of many working parents who are struggling with virtual learning,” she said. Matthew Anthony Sulikowski, 73, has lived in the township for more than 20 years. He is married with two children and three grandchildren - a 2020 graduate of Old Bridge High School (OBHS), a sophomore and a freshman at OBHS. He earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial arts technology from Newark State Teachers College, currently Kean University, with extensive course work and special projects in photography, graphic arts, auto technology, cad and metallurgy. He also holds a state welders license in electric arc, metal inert gas, tungsten inert gas and all forms of metal fabrication technology. Sulikowski is a retired Old Bridge High School teacher with 36 years of service and experience in program development and budgeting. In the community, Sulikowski is a member of the Madison Township Historical Society, American Numismatic Society, and the Historic Philatelic Society. He also has been participating in the campaign to fight hunger in the community with Partners in Caring at the ShopRite of Old Bridge for several years. Sulikowski has served on the BOE for 12 years. He has chaired the Buildings and Grounds, Curriculum and Strategic Planning committees, and served as a member of other committees over the years. As an active member of the Old Bridge educational community for more than 50 years, he said he has attended numerous high school, middle school and grammar school graduations, and chaperoned numerous project graduations and high school dances. “I am running for BOE because I believe the experience and training I have received in my professional life as a schoolteacher aids me in making informed and sound decisions for the benefit of the children of Old Bridge as well as for the community,” he said. Approximately during the mid-1980s, Sulikowski was running a summer work

study program at the high school level. “This program gave selected students the chance to partake in maintenance and upkeep of the buildings and grounds thereby educating them in the life skill area,” he said. “After about 10 years the program ended. I am happy to say the summer work study program has now been reinstated through the curriculum committee for which I was the chairperson. Unfortunately, due to the circumstances we are facing, this program did not start as expected for the summer of 2020. I look forward to seeing the return of the program for 2021.” Sulikowski said he would also like to see half-year program courses implemented into the district’s curriculum. “Students would be exposed to a larger variety of programs which would allow them to have a much broader approach from different instructional teaching methods,” he said. Allison T. Vass, 62, has lived in the township for 26 years. She is married with two children, ages 35 and 31. Vass earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of South Florida. She is employed as an assistant store manager for Kohl’s Marlboro. In the community, Vass has been a PTA volunteer for 25 years – most of the 25 years was involved with SEPTA, special education PTA. She is on the volunteer board of Special Projects for Special Children, which is a non profit organization that supports Camp Robin in Old Bridge. At Kohl’s, Vass is in charge of the Kohl’s Cares program, which is a program that donates $500 grants to any organization that has fundraisers for children. In 2008, she earned Citizen of the Year Honor from the Old Bridge Elks and in 2003 she worked with community businesses to help start a job coaching program

at Old Bridge High School. Vass is seeking her first term on the board. She has attended every board meeting in person and virtually, she said. “I am running for BOE because I feel serving on the BOE would be a natural progression of my 25-plus years of volunteer service in this district and look forward to continuing my work advocating for all the children of Old Bridge,” she said. “With COVID-19 and the issue of state aid budget cuts, I feel that my voice of reason and compassion for the children and families of Old Bridge will be an asset to the board. I have always been an advocate for the children in Old Bridge.” If elected, Vass said one of the areas she would like to concentrate on is communication between families, communities and the board. “This year, communication is a focus of the BOE. I would like to be part of that initiative and help be the bridge between families, community and the board,” she said. “I would also like to concentrate on curriculum and programs. We have come such a long way with our innovative programs. I would like to make that a priority when it comes to budget time. I have always been a fair and logical voice in the community and I would hope that would be an asset to the BOE.” Frank Weber has lived in the township for 46 years. He is a father of four children and five grandchildren. He studied at the College of Staten Island and is a retired vice president of operations. In the community, Weber has been involved continuously since 1979 as a coach at first, in the Old Bridge Soccer League (OBSL), then president of the OBSL, same for Old Bridge Girls Soccer, officer in Cheesequake baseball, coach in

Old Bridge Basketball, served on the Old Bridge Township Recreation Advisory Board, Old Bridge Township Planning Board, served as a commission on the Old Bridge Municipal Utilities Authority and a trustee for the Old Bridge Library. Weber has previously served on the BOE for 18 years. “I don’t believe the closing of Cheesequake School was properly done logistically, or ethical, by the superintendent (David Cittadino),” he said. “He publically states, it’s spot on Route 34 generated safety concerns. If that was such a concern, why hasn’t he questioned [the safety concerns] since he became superintendent in 2013? Why has he entered into a agreement with the Sayreville BOE to put hundreds of preschool age children in that building?” Weber said in his opinion Old Bridge has the worst reopening hybrid plan in the state with four hours a week of classroom study. “I believe this plan was designed to fail,” he said. Weber said recent BOE’s have approved unchecked spending. “Between budget years 2010-11 and 2017-18 spending increased from $144,048,074 to $175,436,711 or 22%,” he said. “Cost per pupil rose 33% from $15,093 to $20,092. Enrollment dropped 846 during that period.” Weber noted Rutgers University charges $15,047 a year for a New Jersey commuting student. He said Old Bridge Public School students attend 13 years [of public school], nine more than a college student. “Two candidates for re-election, Jill Decaro and Lisa Lent, have conflicts under state law and cannot vote on numerous important issues,” he said. “I have 18 years of BOE proven experience and the desire to improve this board.”

Malin Akerman Talks AMC’s New Sci-Fi Drama ‘Soulmates’ By Ryan Berenz

I

f a simple, scientifically proven test could definitively determine your soulmate — that one person you’re cosmically connected to — would you take it? And if you took the test, how would the result change your life? Those questions are at the core of AMC’s six-part speculative sci-fi drama Soulmates (Mondays), which tells stories of characters who’ve been profoundly affected by the breakthrough discovery of the human “soul particle” in 2023. It has already been renewed for a second season. Fifteen years in the future, the Soul Connex company offers customers the chance to find their soulmate. (Think of it as an internet dating service that is irrefutably accurate.) The science is perfect, but its realworld application isn’t. There’s no guar-

antee that their soulmate has also taken the test. There’s no guarantee that their soulmate is the person to whom they’re already married. There’s no guarantee they’ll like their soulmate’s family or friends. There’s no guarantee that their soulmate is even still alive. “I always saw it as a world — if you were looking in the big, big, big picture — it’s the equivalent of destiny versus free will,” explains co-creator and executive producer Brett Goldstein. “If soulmates exist, then it’s this person you’re destined for. But if you’re destined, then you have no choice. But we live in a world where theoretically we have free will, so that’s the real question: If everything’s laid out for you, then what’s the point of your basic life?” Goldstein said. In the episode “Break on Through,” Malin Akerman (Billions) and Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) play two people

who embark on a disturbing odyssey in search of meaning in their lives after their

soulmates have died. “Sitting in a group somewhat like AA for people who’ve lost their soulmates that they’ve never met, it’s just really a strange beginning to this really cool episode,” Akerman says. “I just loved it. I thought it was just such a creative episode, and really kind of disturbing, all in one.” In the case of Akerman’s character, the soulmate test gave her tunnel vision, and she became unable to see the forest for the trees. “Instead of using our own gut feeling and our own brains and developing our own opinions, we’re going against our own grain,” Akerman says. “That is so frustrating to watch, but so much fun to play in a role like this. You get to play the duality of it, the contradicting feelings within oneself.”

with a Blue Ribbon Award; 160 entries were deemed Gardens of Distinction; and 259 were awarded a Proud Participant. In reviewing the variety of entries in this year’s contest, Sam Robertson, PHS program manager of Gardener Engagement, said, “As always, PHS staff and our contest judges enjoyed viewing the beauty of each garden submission – but during this challenging summer, we were particularly impressed by the creativity and resourcefulness showcased. With many of us spending more time at home, we were delighted to see how gardeners recruited family members to support their garden work. All of us at PHS congratulate the hundreds of participants who took the time to bring beauty to their communities and to the larger gardening audience in the area.” Complete results from this year’s competition are available on PHS’s website, and select gardens will be spotlighted on the PHS Home Gardening Facebook Group.

Hundreds of mental health advocates walk during virtual 5K

T

he National Alliance on Mental Illness of New Jersey (NAMI NJ) held a successful yet virtual statewide walk, NAMIWalks Your Way. Due to the pandemic, instead of the annual thousand-person 5K walk at the Seaside Park boardwalk, NAMI NJ held a five-hour webinar on Sept. 26, also streaming on Facebook Live, which brought together communities across the state to raise mental health awareness and funds. Around 500 mental health advocates and supporters from over 60 walk teams selected activities of their choice to engage in. Many participants still put on their sneakers to walk, using their treadmill or going outside in their backyard or through a local park, according to a statement prepared by NAMI NJ. Participants shared their activities on social media using #namiwalksnj2020 and followed NAMI NJ’s Zoom webinar and Facebook Live stream, which included mental health facts and education, participant activities and local entertainment. One in five adults experience mental illness, but it touches five in five people either directly or indirectly, according to the statement. Communities are called on to continue raising funds and donating on the Walk portal through the end of October via namiwalks.org/newjersey. Funds raised support free local mental health programs and services provided by NAMI NJ and its local county-based affiliates. NAMI NJ, founded in 1985, is a statewide non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families who are affected by mental illness through programs of support, education and advocacy. The state headquarters are located in North Brunswick. For more information, visit www. naminj.org.

ON THE ROAD PETER PERROTTA

2020 Nissan Sentra SV

N

issan has been making Sentras for 38 years. That’s a nice run for this compact entry level model. Ever wonder where these car makers come up with the names for these models? Wikipedia says “the word Sentra sounds like central as well as sentry, which evokes images of safety.” Another internet posting says the name Sentra is of Italian origin and means “beautiful.” Suffice it to say that the Nissan Sentra has been around long enough so that most people know Peter Perrotta what it is. However, this Japanese auto maker was not about to rest on its laurels when it comes to the Sentra. For the 2020 model year, Nissan has come out with an “all new” Sentra from top to bottom and inside and out.

I recently settled behind the wheel of the 2020 Nissan Sentra 2.0 SV CVT for one week to judge how they did with remodeling the all new Sentra. In many ways the all new Sentra is a big hit. It’s exterior styling is sleek, sculpted and cool looking. Interior redesign is a big winner as well. Inside the new Sentra looks more expensive than its price tag. It is intelligently laid out and fairly roomy but still a bit snug for my six-foot frame. This new Sentra sits on a new platform and suspension as well. I found the new frame and suspension to be solid and very functional. However, the new Sentra only offers one engine, the 2.0 liter four cylinder powerplant that produces 149 horsepower and 145 pound feet of torque. Therein lies the problem with this new Sentra. Power. It really doesn’t produce enough power. The folks at Car and Driver raved about “roomy interior, comfy seats, lots of tech and upscale features” on the new Sentra. But, on the other hand, they also stated “incredibly slow acceleration, noisy engine and harsh ride.” I think the folks at Car and Driver were being a bit too harsh here. Yes, the car is rather slow, but I wouldn’t say it was “incredibly” slow. It accelerates just as good as a Toyota Corolla or a Honda Civic. Let’s face it folks, no one buys a compact car to win races at the Indy 500. As far as the “harsh ride” knock, I didn’t find that to be the case at all. In fact, I think the new suspension and frame for this new Sentra suits it quite well. I found the steering to be precise and the handling to be above average for a vehicle in this class. Yes, there were times when I punched the accelerator looking to make an aggressive passing move or enter an on ramp on the interstate and found the power to be lacking, but that’s almost to be expected for a car in this class.

Nissan Sentra

As far as the noisy engine complaint, I didn’t find that to be the case. Most of the time the engine for this Sentra was relatively quiet. However, when you do “punch it” a bit the engine revs become more audible than usual. The base price for the Senta SV I tested is $20,270. The sticker price of my tester was $24,800, which includes added options and $925 for destination and delivery. The added options included $2,400 for an SV premium package, $500 for a lighting package and $440 for an electronics package. The SV premium package included: LED head lamps; power moonroof; quilted leather seats; 6-way power driver seat; heated seat and a leather shift knob. The lighting package includes ambient interior lighting and some ground effects lighting. The EPA fuel consumption ratings for this all new Sentra are quite impressive. It gets 33 miles per gallon overall – 39 mpg in highway driving and 29 in city driving. The estimate annual fuel cost for driv-

SUBMITTED PHOTO

ing the Sentra is a miserly $1,250 a year as it uses about 3 gallons of gas per every 100 miles driven. This new model Sentra has not been government crash test rated yet. The infotainment system in the new Sentra is fairly easy to use. My tester synched my phone and iPod music system rather easily. However, my tester did not have a factory navigation system in it so I had to plug my Android phone into it and use Android Auto. I didn’t think the Android Auto system was as good as factory navigation system would be. I lost the signal several times while using the Android navigation system. Overall, at the end of the day the Sentra can stand proudly side by side in comparison to either the Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla.

Novenas PRAYER IS POWERFUL Oh, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine of splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this petition. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my Mother. Oh Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse in thee (3Xs). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3Xs). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. + Say this prayer 3 consecutive days and publish prayer after petition is granted. Do not despair. Additional advice and petition. Pray the Rosary regularly. F.A.M.

PRAYER TO ST. JUDE Oh Holy St. Jude, Apostle and Martyr, great in virtue and rich in miracles, near Kinsman of Jesus Christ, faithful intercessor of all who invoke your special patronage in time of need, to you I have recourse from the depth of my heart and humbly beg to whom God has given such great power to come to my assistance. Help me in my present and urgent petition. In return, I promise to make your name known and cause you to be invoked. Say three Our Fathers, three Hail Marys and Glorias. Publication must be promised. St. Jude pray for us all who invoke your aid. Amen. This Novena has never been known to fail. This Novena must be said for 9 consecutive days. Thanks.

J.A.
