n its first round of distribution, Middlesex County will award grants to 123 local businesses with a collective total of $3,039,716 from its CARES Act Small Business Relief Grant (MC-SBRG) program, which uses federal CARES Act funding. The grants serve to reimburse costs and loss of revenue associated with adapting business operations in a COVID-19 environment. Payments ranging from $410.97 to the maximum $30,000, with an average grant payment of $24,714, will be distributed to small businesses negatively impacted by COVID-19 starting Oct. 14, according to a statement provided by the Middlesex County Office of Communication. “The COVID-19 pandemic has had many unintended consequences, including for our small business communities. Not only have they been asked to limit or halt operations, but as we begin to reopen our economy, these cash-strapped businesses have been asked to adapt their businesses accordingly, making it even more difficult to make ends meet,” Middlesex County Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios said in the statement. “These grants will certainly make a positive impact in our business community.” “The county’s commitment to its small business owners is fierce, and this first round of funding being distributed to 123 small businesses will make a huge

‘Joker’ turns from comedy to horror, writing latest thriller from his Princeton home By JENNIFER AMATO Managing Editor
I
James S. “Murr” Murray of “Impractical Jokers” fame releases newest book, “Don’t Move”
t may not be impossible to spot one of your favorite Tenderloins in the greater Princeton area. James S. “Murr” Murray, one of the stars of “Impractical Jokers” and “The Misery Index” on truTV, moved to Princeton last fall with his fiancee. “[We’re] absolutely loving it,” Murr said. “My fiancée and I are huge fans of Witherspoon Grill. If it were up to us, we would be there every night. “Having lived in New York City my entire life, it’s been wonderful to get out, finally breathe fresh air, and hike and kayak in the area. Staten Island was a great place to grow up – and that’s where I met my fellow Impractical Jokers – but Princeton is a great place to create our new life together and one day raise kids together.” Although Murr is best known for his comedic acts and stunts on the popular truTV practical joke show, he said he got his degree in writing from Georgetown University and always dreamed of becoming an author one day. “The success of ‘Impractical Jokers’ finally gave me the chance to start my alternate career as a novelist. Writing and improvisation are equally difficult, surprising and rewarding. But both represent my personality equally well. It’s all about affecting people in a fun, positive way through creativity of all kinds,” he said. Murr said he grew up reading and watching thrillers, “so it was kind of a natural progression for my writing to spring from that early interest.” He said he enjoys “The Meg” by Steve Alten, “The Andromeda Strain” by Michael Crichton, and is a personal fan of R.L. Stine and Brad Meltzer. They always say, “Write what you know” Murr said about delving into a career in horror writing. His newest thriller, “Don’t Move,” was released on Oct. 20 – after being written from his home in Princeton. He also recorded the audiobook from there. Megan Forrester has barely survived the unthinkable. Six months ago, she witnessed a horrific accident that killed her husband and son, and lives with the guilt of knowing she could have done more to save them. Now, Megan hopes to mend the pieces of her broken spirit by attending a local church group’s annual camping trip. But the church group members — riddled with dark secrets

Through the challenge that is the COVID-19 pandemic, Murr said he is trying to cope as best as possible. “Well, just like everyone else, it’s been tough adjusting to this new world. We’ve found some comfort in raising money for charities and frontline workers who are out there keeping people healthy. Melyssa and I are lucky that we’ve had all this extra time for planning our wedding! “As for the Jokers, we’ve been filming a new TV show from home called ‘Impractical Jokers: Dinner Party.’ And we finally went back to work filming ‘Impractical Jokers’ as well. Thankfully, because I missed my friends dearly,” he said. Murray is a writer, executive producer and actor, best known as “Murr” on the hit television show Impractical Jokers along with his comedy troupe, The Tenderloins. He has worked as the senior vice president of Development for NorthSouth Productions for over a decade and is the owner of Impractical Productions, LLC. He recently starred in Impractical Jokers: The Movie, and also appears in the television series The Misery Index on TBS. Voter Information Centers to open in Middlesex County
V
oter Information Centers (VIC) in Highland Park, Monroe and Sayreville will remain open through Election Day, Nov. 3. The VICs will provide voting services including replacement ballots, signature verification and instructions on how to participate in the 2020 General Election. The centers are located at Highland Park Borough Hall, 221 S. Fifth Ave., Highland Park; the Monroe Township Library, 4 Municipal Plaza, Monroe Township; and Sayreville Borough Hall, ‚Äã167 Main St., Sayreville. All three locations will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday until Nov. 2, and then from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Nov. 3. Members of the public will be subject to a temperature screening upon entrance to the VIC and will be required to wear a face covering at all times. Representatives from the Board of Elections will also be available to contact virtually at each VIC to answer questions residents may have regarding registration updates and how to ensure their ballot is properly cast. “Once again, Middlesex County is going above and beyond for its residents. Not only did Middlesex County commit to
providing Vote By Mail ballots to residents with postage included and far surpassed the number of ballot dropbox locations required by the state – 32 locations compared to the state’s mandated 10 – but the county is now offering unique VICs throughout the county to assist our residents in casting their ballot,” Middlesex County Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios said in a statement provided by the Middlesex County Office of Communication. “The opening of these VICs will be a tremendous asset to our residents.” VICs will be staffed by county clerk election officials who can immediately access voter registration data and determine if the voter has been issued a Vote by Mail ballot, and whether or not a ballot has been received by the election officials, according to the statement. If the voter has not been issued a Vote by Mail ballot, they can apply at the center. Voters will also be able to apply for and receive a replacement ballot – these duplicate ballots are issued in the event a ballot has been lost, damaged, or the voter does not receive it. VICs are not polling locations and ballots cannot be cast inside a VIC. Each VIC is located within the immediate vicinity of a Middlesex County drop box at which a voter may drop off a completed Vote By
Mail ballot. The county will operate 97 polling locations on Election Day throughout the county at which residents may complete a paper provisional ballot. Provisional ballots will not be available at the VICs. In addition, the county clerk’s office has opened to the public, and with extended hours. The County Clerk – Division of Elections Office located in the County Administration Building in New Brunswick will be open to the public from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Saturday for residents looking for information and assistance on how to participate in the 2020 General Election, offering signature verification and providing duplicate ballots. “While the COVID-19 pandemic has required us to restrict public access to the county clerk’s office for the sake of the health and safety of our staff, we welcome the opportunity to bring the public back into our office, practicing all necessary safety measures, to assist them in exercising their right to vote,” Middlesex County Clerk Elaine Flynn said in the statement. “This election cycle may be unique in the way our residents vote, but what is not unique is our commitment to ensuring they have all the necessary information and
tools to do so.” Most voters have several ways to vote in the 2020 election, all via paper ballots, which include: • Voters may mail the ballots via the United States Postal Service at any time before Nov. 3. Ballots must be postmarked by Nov. 3. Postage is included at no cost to residents. • Voters may place the ballot in one of the secure drop boxes located throughout the county until 8 p.m. Nov. 3. Locations include: Jamesburg Municipal Complex – 131 Perrineville Road Piscataway Municipal Complex – 455 Hoes Lane Sayreville Borough Hall – 167 Main St. Milltown Municipal Complex – 39 Washington Ave. North Brunswick Municipal Complex – 710 Hermann Road Metuchen Municipal Complex – 500 Main St. Plainsboro Municipal Complex – 641 Plainsboro Road Woodbridge Municipal Building – 1 Main St. Edison Municipal Complex – 100 Municipal Blvd.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month
F
all is here and as the seasons change, we will all be doing our best to stay healthy through the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and cold and flu season. We should also remember to acknowledge that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This is a time to remember all those living with this disease, those who have passed, and to remember to screen early for signs of breast cancer. Throughout this month, you’ll see this observance in the media with special messages and information from health organizations and charities. It’s important, even
if you think you may not be at risk, to stop and pay attention the ads and images you see on television and the internet. They serve as a reminder for things we often overlook or fail to remember. For example, did you know that annual screenings for breast cancer are recommended for both men and women? If you have not yet been screened for this disease, it’s always advisable to do so as soon as you feel conditions are safe. Remember, if breast cancer is detected early enough, it can most likely be cured with proper treatment. In recent months, we’ve come to rely
on the World Health Organization (WHO) for some of our most important statistics. Here are a few that show the importance of early screening for breast cancer: • The WHO has indicated that during 2020, an estimated 276,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer are likely to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 48,530 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer. • About 2,620 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in men in 2020. A man’s lifetime risk of breast cancer is about 1 in 883. Many of our citizens today are uninsured, and unable to get the necessary testing to help them live at their healthiest.

Middlesex County is providing help to these citizens through Middlesex County Cancer Education and Early Detection Program. This group provides education and screening services for breast cancer for men and women who meet the income guidelines and have no health insurance, or whose insurance Ronald G. Rios does not cover cancer screening. For more information on this program, call 732-745-3107. Our residents can also visit the Middlesex County Office of Health Services located at 35 Kennedy Blvd., East Brunswick, for a wide array of services such as cancer screening and education. For more information, please call 732-745-310. As always, more information about both programs is available on www.middlesexcountynj.gov. There are many charitable organizations that are working towards a cure for breast cancer and helping to fund research on its causes and treatment. For example, you may be familiar with is the Susan G. Komen Organization, which works to educate the public on the disease. To help these organizations, many people make donations during October, often to remember a loved one who lost their battle with breast cancer. If you want to donate in memory of someone special, you can use the website charitynavigator.org to find the group that’s right for you. In addition, many of these charity organizations schedule fundraising events during the month of October, including walks or runs. This year is sure to be no exception, even if the events are virtual ones. If you are interested in participating, you can check your town’s website, or the website of whichever non-profit organization you are interested in to see when and how they are being held. As you know one symbol for support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month is the wearing of a pink ribbon. The ribbon reminds us of the importance of regular examinations and the support for raising funds for finding a cure. The color of the ribbon represents health, vitality and empowerment of women. Like all diseases, our help is needed in the fight against breast cancer. Whether you’re caring for a loved one, donating to charity, or helping raise funds, you are helping work towards a cure by showing that you care. Ronald G. Rios is the director of the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders. He writes the occasional column for Newspaper Media Group.

Middlesex County develops interactive map for discovering local growers
A
new online guide to Middlesex County’s growers and agricultural product producers, “Grown in Middlesex County,” will help residents find that perfect farmers’ market, Halloween pumpkin, fresh apples for apple pie, or fall flower and vegetable transplants, right from the backyard. The Grown in Middlesex County interactive map, which allows users to choose from farmers markets, U-Pick farms, and Christmas tree farms throughout the county, includes the farm’s address, phone number and website. “Locally grown produce isn’t just a trend, it’s environmentally friendly and a major part of our local economy,” Middlesex County Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios said in a statement provided by the Middlesex County Office of Communication. “Our county’s new marketing campaign, Grown In Middlesex County, features an online guide to the best our local farms and agricultural producers have to offer. Enjoy the fall weather and our county’s beautiful scenery, and start your
journey today.” This interactive map was created with the input of the Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Middlesex County, the county’s source for all agricultural news and advice. “Middlesex County farmers have been some of the most progressive pioneers in direct marketing agricultural products in the nation,” William T. Hlubik, Middlesex County agricultural agent and professor for Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Middlesex County, said in the statement. ”Our growers have taken the lead in producing some of the very best farm products and offering exciting agri-tourism opportunities for the entire family.” The Grown in Middlesex County interactive map can be found at https://middlesexcounty.maps.arcgis.com/apps/Shortlist/ index.html?appid=e71bbfc1fe3b4171be81 e6fff2fe937b. Dove Hospice Services of New Jersey seeks compassionate volunteers to provide support to local hospice patients and their families. Hospice patient care volunteers visit with patients in their homes, which can also be nursing facilities or assisted living facilities, at least once a week. They read to the patient, reminisce about their lives, play cards, help with letter writing and provide respite for caregivers. Visits can be virtual, and are either during the day or early evening. Volunteers may also assist with administrative work within the hospice office. Patient care volunteers complete an application and attend a virtual volunteer training program that covers the role of a hospice volunteer. Day and evening virtual training programs are offered. Church. Szymanski, who became the fourth pastor of the church in 1973 and retired in 2007, wrote a book “Toward New Horizons on the history of the church. The year 1921 marks the beginning of St. Thomas the Apostle Parish of Old Bridge. Charlotte Elizabeth Hurtzig donated three acres of land located on Chestnut Street in the East Brunswick side of Old Bridge. Hurtzig’s gift of land was of a major significance. The site was located at the entrance to the district of Old Bridge, where for generations, Catholics were not known or welcomed, Szymanski said. It was also located adjacent to the Chestnut Hill Cemetery, wherein it was prohibited to be a burial place for Catholics, he said. In 1951, Middlesex County was experiencing a population explosion. Saint Thomas the Apostle Parish had slightly more than 200 Catholic families. There was a critical need to accommodate the rapidly growing weekly parishioners. Most of the newcomer families had young children whose families were seeking to enroll their children in a parochial school. On July 12, 1959, under the pastorage of Father Walter Aloysius French, a new parish church, auditorium, school and rectory were constructed on 11.7 acres of land along Route 18 in what was then Madison Township. The project was completed in 1960, a little less than a mile from the original St. Thomas the Apostle Church. The church today in the Diocese of Metuchen currently has approximately 4,700 families. ST. JUDE NOVENA May the sacred heart of Jesus be the adored, glorified, loved and preserved throughout the world now and forever. Sacred heart of Jesus pray for us. St. Jude, worker of miracles, pray for us. St. Jude, hope of the hopeless, pray for us. Say this prayer nine times a day. By the eighth day your prayer will be answered. Say it for nine days. It has never been known to fail. Publication must be promised. Thank you, St. Jude.
G.B. Novenas PRAYER IS POWERFUL Oh, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine of splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this petition. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my Mother. Oh Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse in thee (3Xs). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3Xs). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. + Say this prayer 3 consecutive days and publish prayer after petition is granted. Do not despair. Additional advice and petition. Pray the Rosary regularly. F.A.M.

Recipients of this first round of federal funding include restaurants, hair and nail salons, retail facilities, health care offices, manufacturing, construction, educational services, transportation companies and fitness studios. SBRG-CV grants will be awarded to the following number of businesses, by municipality: Carteret, four; Cranbury, one; Dunellen, four; East Brunswick, seven; Edison, 20; Highland Park, five; Jamesburg, one; Metuchen, 11; Middlesex Borough, four; Milltown, one; Monroe, five; New Brunswick, 13; North Brunswick, 11; Old Bridge, four; Perth Amboy, five; Piscataway, five; Sayreville, two; South Amboy, one; South Brunswick, three; South Plainfield, four; South River, one; and Woodbridge, 14. Among other qualifications, to be eligible for the grants these businesses must employ less than 50 employees, have a net annual business income of less than $1 million based on their 2019 federal tax return, and must document business interruption as well as loss as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the statement. With millions still available in the SBRG grant, those eligible to apply for grants are encouraged to do so at the new CARES Act Small Business Relief Grants Portal. In total, the county intends to award $30 million to small businesses, with grants up to $30,000 available for each business. For more information, visit: www.middlesexcountynj.gov/mcsbrg. This program will be administered by the Middlesex County Department of Finance.
