Old Bridge to study Old Matawan Road, Laurence Harbor Waterfront By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

T

ownship officials in Old Bridge are taking a look at Old Matawan Road and the Route 35 Laurence Harbor Parkway as areas in need of redevelopment and rehabilitation. The Old Bridge Township Council approved a resolution for the Planning Board to study the areas on Sept. 21. Veena Sawant, township planner, presented the Planning Board with the Old Matawan Road study area on Oct. 6 and the Route 35 Laurence Harbor Parkway area on Oct. 27. The Old Matawan Road study area is a gateway or entrance to Old Bridge from East Brunswick. It comprises 26 parcels – some vacant lots, including a New Jersey Department of Transportation lot, some commercial and few residential homes. The area is located on either sides of Old Matawan Road between Route 18 and County Road 516. The area is in the Economic Development Opportunity (EDO) Commercial Neighborhood Zone 1. The existing land uses are commercial, residential, automotive and personal services. Many homes and buildings within the area were built in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Surrounding land uses

include Southwood development, built in the early-mid 1950s; Miller School, built between 1954 and 1957; and residential and commercial properties. Sawant said the Madison Township Historic Commission mentioned four sites in the area as historic sites. None of the properties are listed on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places, she said. The area is a transit route for the Middlesex County Area Transit Bus, which runs between Brunswick Square Mall in East Brunswick to Old Bridge, New Jersey Transit Line, which runs from Old Bridge, East Brunswick, Jersey City and Weehawken and another bus that runs from Lakewood, Old Bridge and New York. The Route 35 Laurence Harbor Parkway area consists of 49 parcels: 25 residential, 13 commercial/retail, eight public, one house of worship, one Old Bridge Municipal Utilities Authority and one vacant parcel. The boundaries of the area are McKinley Avenue and Sunset Avenue to the southeast, Lakeview Avenue to the northwest and Ravine Avenue and Sunset Avenue to the southwest. The majority of the parcels lie within the EDO-1 Zone and few properties lie within the R-5 Residential Zone. The area is accessible to Route 35 and CR-689. There are two New Jersey Transit bus stops, which run to the Old

Bridge Commuter Lot on Ernston Road for a transfer bus to New York City. The area is disadvantaged with obsolete lots, no room for parking as well as residential and restaurant driveways butting Route 35, a high speed corridor, Sawant said. As for the destination waterfront area, Sawant said “the sky’s the limit.” She said with a resolution coming soon for the Margaret’s Creek sector of the Raritan Bay Slag Superfund site, it is the right time to investigate the area to make it better. “Most municipalities with a waterfront have gone the redevelopment route,” she said, adding officials need to create a vision to capitalize on the township’s assets of the waterfront, existing recreational facilities and transportation services. In July, township officials discussed implementing parking fees from Memorial Day to October and residential parking permits as the demand of the beachfront area in the Laurence Harbor section of the township continued to rise. The Township Council approved residential parking permits in August. Discussions in regards to parking fees are still in the works. (Continued on page 6)

New owners of Attilio’s Pizzeria use quarantine time to revamp menu, restaurant

By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer

T

he new owners of Attilio’s Pizzeria and Restaurant bring the flavor of Naples, Italy, in every bite. Longtime friends Lina Carpenito and Nunzio Schiano took over the Old Bridge establishment on March 8, two days before the state started shutting down businesses due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. “What timing,” Carpenito said as she recalled the ordeal. “But we pushed through.” Carpenito and Schiano used the time during quarantine to revamp the inside of the restaurant, as well as the menu, which offers authentic Italian dishes from a Margherita pizza pie to a simple ingredient soup. Bread is made in house and customers can buy as many loaves as they want. “We are not reinventing the wheel … we grew up with these dishes,” Carpenito said. Carpenito and Schiano grew up in Monte Di Procida, a town in the Naples region. The friends moved to New Jersey with their families when they were young.

Fast forward two decades and 18 years in the restaurant business, the friends have opened a restaurant together. “It was always a dream,” Carpenito said, adding their takeover is a family affair of both their families. “Nunzio was in North Carolina with a restaurant there and I’ve been in New Jersey. One of our friends told us about the opening of Attilio’s and it has been in the works since then.” Carpenito said since they acquired the location, restaurants are starting to slowly reopen with outdoor dining and 25% indoor dining capacity. During the height of the coronavirus, Carpenito said their restaurant donated pies to frontline heroes. She said they are always looking for sponsors for whoever would like to donate food. Attilio’s offers takeout and delivery through their website; phone; and thirdparty delivery services such as Doordash, Grubhub and Slice. Carpenito said they also offer catering, noting they have done several football heroes and hot catering events.

Sayreville mourns loss of longtime recreation director By MATTHEW SOCKOL Staff Writer

SAYREVILLE – A lifelong Sayreville resident who was the director of recreation is mourned by the community. Jerry Ust, 66, died on Oct. 3 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. At the time of his death, Ust had been serving as Sayreville’s director of recreation. Members of the Borough Council and the Sayreville School District Board of Education recognized Ust at meetings that were both held on Oct. 13.

According to his obituary, Ust was a graduate of Sayreville War Memorial High School and The College of New Jersey. After operating his own business, he became the director of recreation in the borough. He was also an active member of the Sayreville Athletic Association where he coached his son and daughter. An avid golfer, he was a member of Glenwood Country Club and Forsgate Country Club. School board President Anthony Esposito described his experiences with Ust during the Oct. 13 meeting. “I met Jerry 12 years ago and from the

very first time I spoke with him up until two weeks ago in my last conversation, he has been nothing but a gentleman,” Esposito said. “At the forefront of his mind every day was how he could better the children of Sayreville. I got to witness this firsthand, working under him on the recreation board. He was an amazing man, he loved this town and he was loved. Please remember him in your thoughts.” A reflection on Ust and his contributions to the borough were shared by Mayor Victoria Kilpatrick. “I know that many people have a lot of things to say about Jerry,” the mayor said.

“It’s very difficult, I think, for most of us to speak on him because there are just too many things that come to mind when I think of him. But as my friend, Jerry, every single time I walk onto a field, every single time that we look up at a firework going off in the sky, or we have a trick-or-trunk, Easter egg hunt, or movie in the park, we know that you’ll be shining down and smiling at us all. You’re with us forever, Jerry.” Both the Borough Council and Board of Education held a moment of silence in Ust’s memory.

Approximately 90 children and their families will be treated to a full dinner, a visit from Santa Claus and gifts. Monetary donations can be sent to Cops for Kids, Attn: Sgt. Jim Ford, Old Bridge Police Department, 1 Old Bridge Plaza, Old Bridge 08857. New, unwrapped toys and games can be dropped off at police headquarters from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.

The Middlesex County Office of Arts and History Program will present Alborada Spanish Dance Theatre’s 25th anniversary live concert from 2:30-4 p.m. Nov. 15 at the Hungarian American Athletic Club, 233 Somerset St., New Brunswick. This is an in-person, live performance. Masks required. Tickets are $25. Purchase tickets at https://alborada25anniversarygrantshow. eventbrite.com

The benefits of redevelopment and rehabilitation to areas include revitalization and spurs of economic development, encouragement for development of vacant parcels/buildings, proper utilization of land, increased ratables and improved property values, promotion of sustainability and safer mobility options. Both the Old Bridge Matawan Road and Route 35 Laurence Harbor Parkway area are within the state’s Smart Growth Planning and Metropolitan Planning areas for infill development or redevelopment. Sawant noted the redevelopment and rehabilitation plans are non-condemnation plans and the township will not exercise eminent domain. “If a homeowner does not want to take advantage of redevelopment or rehabilitation, they will not be forced to do anything,” she said. The plans offer opportunities for upgrades and tax abatements under the local redevelopment and housing laws.

Veterans understand what it’s like to live in uncertain times

E

very November we honor, remember and thank our Veterans. This year, during a global health pandemic, we can all be especially grateful for the courage and dedication of our veterans as they have always understood what it’s like to live in uncertain times, and to make sacrifices for the safety of others. Veterans Day was first known as Armistice Day, marking the end of World War I at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month. In 1954, it became Veterans Day, paying tribute to all veterans in all conflicts. Today, the observance is truly all-inclusive and allows us to pay tribute to all military veterans, living or deceased. Above all, this day reminds us that none of our freedoms, in times of hardship or celebration, would be possible without our servicemen and women. ON THE ROAD PETER PERROTTA

2021 Subaru Crosstrek Limited

I

t’s hard to live down your reputation once it has been achieved. You know, we all have that “frugal” friend who has earned his or her reputation by accounting for every penny when it comes time to chip in to pay the bill at the diner. Much the same can be said for Subaru’s Crosstrek – a popular four-wheel drive compact crossover SUV. No, this car or its owners aren’t frugal. It’s just a vePeter Perrotta hicle that has, over the years, earned a reputation for being very utilitarian, but at the same time, a bit slow. Up until 2021, the only engine the folks at Subaru offered in the Crosstrek was a 2.0 liter, four-cylinder boxer-styled powerplant that delivered an unimpressive 152 horsepower. Many in the North American motoring press rightfully pointed out that this base 2.0 engine needed to be improved. “Slothful acceleration with base engine,” is what the editors at Car and Driver noted. So, lo and behold, Subaru has set out for the 2021 model year, to change that reputation by offering up a new standard engine for the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek Limited and Sport models – a 2.5 liter, four cylinder boxer-styled engine that puts out 182 horsepower, 20 percent more than the 2.0. 2021 is the ninth consecutive year that Subaru has offered up the Crosstrek in its model offerings and, to date, the Cross-

trek’s equipped with the 2.5 liter engine make them the most powerful ones to date. So as to not disappoint my On The Road fans, I recently jumped behind the wheel of the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek Limited – equipped with the more powerful 2.5 engine – for one week to get a firsthand feel for this upgraded crossover. I must say, I was immediately impressed with the new engine and some of the external design tweaks that Subaru packed into this refreshed model. The enhanced power is immediately noticeable and it seems to mesh quite well with the CVT transmission – continuously variable transmission – making for a very smooth and seamless acceleration pattern. The 2021 Crosstrek Limited feels bolder and more substantial with its enhanced ability to make aggressive lane changes and passing maneuvers. The newly offered 2.5 engine comes standard on both the Limited and Sport models. The base and premium trims continue to use the 2.0 liter engine. In actuality, the 2.5 engine offered for 2021 in the Crosstrek is not new to this Japanese car maker. It is the same 2.5 engine that Subaru has used in its mid-sized Legacy sedan and Outback station wagon. The 2021 Crosstrek Limited model I road tested carries a base sticker price of $27,995. The only other added option was an option package for $2,395 that included a power moonroof, navigation and an upgraded Harman Kardon sound system. When you add in the additional $1,050 for destination and delivery, the bottom line sticker price on my tester was $31,440. Truth be told, though, folks, Subaru has a very loyal following. And, for most Subaru lovers, it really isn’t all about power. Subaru has staked its reputation on offering up very solid, four-wheel drive vehicles that are quite versatile. This Crosstrek

can be taken off road where it chews up dirt and sand quite well. It will also hold its own with the best of them in any kind of inclement weather. It is spacious and comfortable on the inside and has an ample amount of cargo room. This is the perfect vehicle to bring to the mountains to go on a hike or throw a kayak on top and motor off to the Pinelands for a day of fun on the water. At the same time, it is also refined enough to offer a bit of luxury in its interior ergonomics so that you can take it with you on “date night” as well. All of the 2021 Crosstreks will offer up redesigned wheels – giving it a sportier look – and a redesigned front fascia that includes a new bumper and grille. The newly offered 2.5 liter engine offers up an impressive overall EPA mileage rating of 29 miles per gallon – 34 mpg in

highway driving and 27 mpg in city driving. The Crosstrek is loaded with a ton of the usual safety features. Its Subaru Starlink 8-inch multi-media touchscreen infotainment system is top notch, as well. I found it very easy to link up my phone or iPod music system, and when it came time to enter an address into the navigation system that went seamlessly well too. It’s an all around good system that easily recognizes voice commands as well. As a total package you get a lot for your money with Subaru Crosstrek and I would recommend that anyone who is in the market for a compact crossover SUV give this model some heavy consideration.

The Traumatic Loss Coalitions for Youth will hold the 17th annual Suicide Prevention Conference, focusing on “Reaching for Hope,” from 8:30 a.m. to noon Dec. 3, via WebEx. McGann, clinical psychologist To register, visit https://rutgers.cloud-cme.com/course/ courseoverview?P=5&EID=7116 Cost is $49 per person.

The times and dates of food pantry operations in Sayreville have changed. Food will be distributed in a contactless drive up service from 10 a.m. to noon every Tuesday at the Sayreville Senior Center, 423 Main St. Donations will be accepted from 2-4 p.m. every Tuesday, also at the Senior Center, to ensure food is quarantined for a week prior to redistribution.
