Old Bridge schools switch to fully remote through Jan. 19 By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer
W
ith a rise in state and local COVID-19 numbers similar to the spring, “in good conscience the district cannot continue with in-person instruction,” Schools Superintendent David Cittadino recently said. Cittadino updated the community of the switch to a fully remote schedule, from Nov. 23 through at least Jan. 19, in a video on Nov. 19, which is posted on the district’s website. The district began its hybrid in-person instruction model in October. “Today [Nov. 19] the New Jersey Department of Health identified Middlesex County as one of several high COVID risk
region,” Cittadino said in the video. The township is one of five coronavirus hotspots in Middlesex County, Old Bridge Mayor Henry had announced in his coronavirus update on Nov. 10. He said officials are working closely with state and county officials to address concerns. “During this period, we will assess the pandemic impact on our community, looking for the earliest opportunity to restart our Phase 2 schedule, bringing our most at risk learners in first,” Cittadino said. “This can only occur when data demonstrates that the COVID pandemic is regressing.” Cittadino said “there is much promise with the introduction of vaccines as a new weapon in our arsenal to combat this tragic virus.” “I know that vaccines are not for every-
one; however, we hope that vaccines utilized in conjunction with social distancing and face coverings will allow us to defeat this pandemic expeditiously and return all our children to the classrooms,” he said. “We recognize that it is in these classrooms where you need your child, and our teachers need them as well. Thank you to all our community members for your understanding during this time. I am grateful for my team of education professionals who have been remarkable and inspiring assets during these past few months.” Additionally, Cittadino said he truly appreciates the district’s Task Force members whose support he has relied upon throughout the pandemic. For more information, visit the district’s website at www.oldbridgeadmin.com.
ncumbent Democrats Vincent Conti and Mary Novak are headed for new three-year terms on the Borough Council in Sayreville. According to results certified by the Middlesex County Clerk’s Office on Nov. 20, Novak received 10,874 votes and Conti received 10,261 votes, as of Nov. 16. Republicans Danielle Zaleski and Karen Bailey Bebert received 9,515 and 9,085 votes, respectively. There were 55 write-in votes. Democrats hold five of six seats on the Borough Council and the mayor’s office. Republicans hold one seat on the Borough Council. Conti, a resident of Sayreville for 15 years, was appointed to the council this year to fill a vacant seat. He is also a commissioner on the Sayreville Economic & Redevelopment Agency (SERA). For about 25 years in his professional career, he has worked in a leadership role at UnitedHealthcare and Anthem, two of the largest healthcare organizations in the country. In a full-three year term, Conti said the issues he intends to address are helping the borough build up its revenue and continuing to work with the team behind Riverton, an ongoing $2.5 billion mixed use development alongside the Raritan River. Novak, who is serving as council president in 2020, has been a resident of Sayreville for 45 years. A member of the governing body for 15 years, she is the council’s longest-serving member, having first been on the governing body from 1995 to 2000 and rejoining in 2012. She also serves on SERA, the Open Space Committee and the Office on Aging. In a presumed new term, Novak said the issues she intends to address are having less housing development, more clean industries and further technology improvements in Sayreville.

MCFOODS distributes 1,500 turkeys with help of community ‘Giants’
T
he Middlesex County Food Organization and Outreach Distribution Services (MCFOODS) received a donation of 1,500 Thanksgiving turkeys that were distributed to two dozen partner agencies throughout the county. The turkeys were delivered to MCFOODS’ distribution center on Kennedy Boulevard in East Brunswick on Nov. 19 by the Community FoodBank of New Jersey, who received the turkeys via Stop & Shop’s Turkey Express program. “In a year when food insecurity has increased sharply throughout the state and the rate of food insecurity among children has nearly doubled in Middlesex County, we are incredibly grateful for this donation,” Freeholder Director Ronald G. Rios said in a statement provided by the Middlesex County Office of Communication. “Because of Stop & Shop’s Turkey Express program, thousands of Middlesex County residents can celebrate one of our country’s most beloved traditions: a turkey dinner on Thanksgiving. On behalf of the Middlesex County Board of Chosen Freeholders, I thank Stop & Shop for their donation, Community FoodBank of New Jersey for their coordination in this effort, and former New York Giants players Joe Morris, David Tyree, and Jonathan Casillas for their assistance in off-loading these turkeys at the MCFOODS Distribution Center this morning.”

Republican holds onto one-year unexpired Ward 2 seat By KATHY CHANG Staff Writer
OLD BRIDGE – Republican candidate Erik DePalma held onto the one-year unexpired term for the Ward 2 Township Council seat that was available in the election on Nov. 3. According to results certified by the Middlesex County Clerk’s Office on Nov. 20, DePalma received 3,263 votes to win his first elected term. He was challenged by newcomer Zeeshan Siddiqi, a Demo-
crat, who received 2,781 votes. There were three write-in votes. Councilwoman Mary Sohor, a Republican, vacated her Ward 2 seat, which expires on Dec. 31, 2021, after she was sworn in for the council-at-large seat in November 2019. The Old Bridge Republican GOP offered three names and the council selected DePalma in January to fill her unexpired seat until the November election. DePalma said he is humbled by the sup-
port he received in Old Bridge and especially within his ward. “As we move on from the election, I look forward to working with the administration and my fellow council members in ensuring Old Bridge continues to be fiscally responsible and provide our residents with safe township for which to live,” he said, noting Old Bridge has been named the fourth safest large city in New Jersey by Advisor Smith.

Newcomer Allison T. Vass receivedg 9,830 votes and incumbent Lisa Lent re-c N ceived 8,971 votes. There were 345 write-in votes. DeCaro, who will begin her secondF term in January, said, “I’m committed toc continuing the hard work of navigatingd through this pandemic by making data-e driven decisions, keeping in mind our spe-t cial needs students and the challenges they face in the virtual world, in addition to the social emotional learning needs of all our students. “One of the categories in our five-year strategic plan is ‘The Whole Child.’ I believe that is the most important aspect of education and is the springboard for everything else. It is our responsibility as Board of Education (BOE) members to take into consideration the diverse community and remember that each student has unique needs. “Finally, I would like to continue to pursue an initiative called ‘Sustainable Jersey for Schools’ that we started prior to this pandemic, which will fall right in line with our Energy Savings Improvement Program to help us continue to be environmentally conscious as well as fiscally responsible,” she said. Sulikowski has served on the BOE for 12 years. During the election, he said he was running for re-election “because I believe the experience and training I have received in my professional life as a schoolteacher aids me in making informed and sound decisions for the benefit of the children of Old Bridge as well as for the community.” Weber has previously served on the BOE for 18 years. During the election, Weber had expressed his concerns of the closing of Cheesequake School, the re-opening hybrid plan, and district spending.

Hackensack Meridian gala raises money for essential workers
I
n lieu of its annual gala, Hackensack Meridian – Meridian Health Foundation hosted a virtual event, raising more than $600,000 for the Hackensack Meridian Health Circle of Compassion program, which provides compassionate, timely and equitable financial assistance to team members affected by a disaster or personal monetary hardship. Called the Circle of Compassion Virtual Celebration – Essential Workers, Essential Needs, the virtual event took place on Nov. 19 and featured updates from Hackensack Meridian Health leadership, moments of gratitude for frontline caregivers and special appearances by Jon Stewart and other New Jersey celebrities. The event can be viewed at bit.ly/MHFVirtualEvent, and although there is no cost to view the program, 100 percent tax deductible gifts can still be made at HackensackMeridianHealth.org/MHFCelebration. Support at certain tiers specific to this
program will also result in recognition at the Hackensack Meridian Health Reflection Garden at Roosevelt Park in Edison, which is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2021. “Our team members are true heroes,” Robert C. Garrett, CEO of Hackensack Meridian Health, said in a prepared statement. “I am grateful for their sacrifices and could not be prouder of the care they provide our community, not just during the pandemic, but every day, even though they may also be facing challenges of their own. Many families these days rely on two incomes, and although Hackensack Meridian Health has been able to preserve our entire workforce, many of our team members’ partners have not been as fortunate. The Circle of Compassion program was born out of a desire to support those colleagues, many of whom are facing dire circumstances, but who still bravely come to work every day to care for others. From the
bottom of my heart, I want to thank everyone who has contributed to this important cause.” To date, the Circle of Compassion program has provided financial assistance to more than 1,300 team members, raising more than $2 million and awarding more than $1.5 million to team members who have demonstrated emergent need. Donations from generous community members have been received, however the program was kickstarted by gifts from 100 percent of the senior leadership team at Hackensack Meridian Health. “Our team is by far Hackensack Meridian Health’s most valuable resource, which is why it is imperative that we support them in every way possible: mentally, emotionally, spiritually and financially, especially now as the battle with COVID-19 rages on,” Joyce Hendricks, chief development officer, Hackensack Meridian Health, said in the statement. “That is why we are so proud to have hosted the virtual celebration to benefit the Circle of Compassion program. Every single dollar raised goes directly to helping our team, many of whom never thought they would find themselves in a position to need financial assistance.” The virtual event also commemorated the conclusion of the six-year Giving Heals capital campaign, which has raised nearly $200 million in support of oncology initiatives, enhancing the patient experience,

broadening access to research and academics and improving clinical outcomes for patients at eight Hackensack Meridian Health medical centers. “The Giving Heals campaign, and all the donors who have supported it – whether through major gifts, remembering the organization in their wills, or simply by giving what they could, when they could – have had a tangible impact on the organization,” Joseph Stampe, president and chief development officer, Meridian Health Foundation, said in the statement. “It is through generosity and giving that we can have a profound impact, not just on the health of our communities, but also on our own wellbeing. It has been a true honor to partner with the community on this important campaign and I am thankful for the support we have received over the years. I hope that everyone who contributed to Giving Heals has felt its true meaning and experienced its benefits, knowing they have helped so many.” To make a contribution in support of the Circle of Compassion event and cause, visit HackensackMeridianHealth.org/MHFCelebration. Middlesex County surrogate announces retirement
A
fter 28 years of service, Middlesex County Surrogate Kevin J. Hoagland will retire effective Dec. 1. Hoagland was first elected as surrogate in 1992, making him the longest serving surrogate in Middlesex County history, according to information provided by the Middlesex County Office of Communications. During his tenure, he established 11 satellite offices that have served more than 33,000 people throughout Middlesex County. Hoagland also extended office hours to better accommodate the public and supervised the digital recording of all probate records in Middlesex County dating back to 1790. “It is with both pride and gratitude that I announce my retirement as surrogate,” Hoagland said in the statement. “I am deeply proud of all that my colleagues and I have accomplished over the course of nearly three decades and am grateful to the people of Middlesex County who trusted me to work on their behalf. As a lifelong county resident, it has been a true privilege to serve my community as surrogate.” Hoagland’s accomplishments also include initiatives designed to better inform people on legal matters involving wills, trusts and estates. He has published booklets on these topics and founded a speak-
ing program on wills and estates that is available to any senior, civic, or religious group in Middlesex County, according to the statement. In 2007, Hoagland established Middlesex County’s National Adoption Day. Held each November, the event promotes and celebrates adoptions throughout Middlesex County. Extending his community service beyond his position at Middlesex County, Hoagland is the founder and president of the Central Jersey Spinal Cord Association. He has served on the New Jersey Commission on Spinal Cord Research, and as chairman of the Mayor’s Committee for A Barrier Free New Brunswick and on the New Brunswick Human Relations Commission. Hoagland is a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus and past grand knight of New Brunswick Council 257. He is also a member of B.P.O. Elks 324 in New Brunswick. Hoagland was appointed to the Judiciary-Surrogate Liaison Committee by Chief Justice Deborah Poritz in 2005, according to the statement. He is a member of the Constitutional Officers Association of New Jersey (COANJ) for which he served as treasurer from 2005 to 2011 and as con-
ference chairman from 2005 to 2008. He is a recipient of the Gil C. Job Award from COANJ in 2007 for outstanding service to the organization and the NJAC Service Award in 1997. In 2017, Hoagland was inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame when he received the Unsung Hero Award, and in 2014, he received the Jefferson Award for Outstanding Public Service, according to the statement. ON THE ROAD PETER PERROTTA
2020 Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0T SEL
‘W
hat are you driving this week?” an old friend of mine asked – as a lot of my friends are apt to do these days when they know I write a weekly auto review column. “A Tiguan,” I replied. “What’s that?,” she snapped. “It’s a Volkswagen,” I said. Well, I hate to admit it, but there are times when one has to cheat and revert to Wikipedia whether one likes it or not. According to Peter Perrotta Wikipedia, “the name Tiguan is a portmanteau of the German words Tiger (tiger) and Leguan (iguana). The name was the result of a naming contest conducted by the German car magazine publisher Auto Bild. It was selected from a field of names that also included Namib, Rockton, Samun and Nanuk. OK, now that we are all clear on that – portmanteau? A portmanteau is formed by combining two or more existing words. While the Tiguan crossover SUV may not be on the tip of every American’s tongues these days, it certainly is a lot more popular in Europe. Volkswagen introduced the Tiguan in 2007. I recently jumped behind the wheel of the 2020 Tiguan 2.0T SEL Premium RLine with 4 motion for one week to check out what VW brings to the table in this crowded and popular segment. At first glance, I was impressed with the look and stance of this Tiguan model – a top of the line trim. The pure white Exterior combined with the Saffrano and black leather interior makes for a very attractive package. However, I must admit that I was a tad disappointed when I jumped behind the wheel of this Tiguan and punched the accelerator to take it for its first spin. While there are a lot of positives to write about here – it’s got plenty of head,

leg and cargo space room – tremendous speed and agility are not one of its strong suits – at least not in my book. The turbo-charged four-cylinder engine makes 184 horsepower. This engine is coupled with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The all wheel drive SEL Premium model runs from 0 to 60 miles per hour in an unimpressive 9.1 seconds. There is a “sport” mode selection on the center console which affords this Tiguan a bit more zip, but not enough to make a tremendous difference. The overall ride quality of the Tiguan is a bit stiff, which makes going over bumps a bit of an adventure at times. But there is enough of a quality feel to the ride to make this a quality choice for some in the SUV crossover segment. My wife commented that she thought that the seats were a bit stiff and not com-
fortable. I would have to agree with her on that point. Volkswagen offers up the Tiguan in six different trim levels, starting with the base S model ($25,965) and ending with top of the line SEL Premium R-Line – which I drove – with a base price of $38,795. The bottom line sticker price on my tester came in at $39,815 after adding in $1,020 for destination and delivery. The EPA fuel consumption ratings for the Tiguan come in at 23 miles per gallon overall – 27 miles per gallon in highway driving and 20 miles per gallon in city driving. The EPA estimates that the annual fuel cost of running this Tiguan will come in at about $1,750 as it uses about 4.3 gallons of gas per every 100 miles driven. The government’s 5-star safety ratings crash test were not completed all the way. The Tiguan did receive a 5-star rating for
the front seat and rear seat side crash tests. It got a 4-star rating on the overall rollover test. The editors at Car and Driver gave the Tiguan high marks for “refined driving experience, available third row and excellent fuel economy.” Car and Driver gave the Tiguan low marks for not being as quick as its rivals, and it has a firm ride with the larger optional wheels. The SEL Premium model comes loaded with a ton of standard equipment including 20-inch alloy wheels; panoramic roof; heated seats and a heated leather wrapped steering wheel; remote start; 8-inch touch screen navigation and a whole lot more. Peter Perrotta’s On The Road column appears regularly. For questions and or comments he can be reached at peter@capitalmotorcars.com.

Assemblywoman wins county clerk election By VASHTI HARRIS Staff Writer
A
ssemblywoman and East Brunswick resident Nancy Pinkin has won 223,186 votes, making her Middlesex County’s newest clerk. Republican and South Plainfield Councilman Joseph Wolak won 135,302 votes. There were a total of 373 write-in votes and 358,861 total votes, according to the Middlesex County Clerk’s Office, which certified the election results on Nov. 20. “I have served at the local level for nine years [and] I’ve been in the assembly for seven so I believe I have the track record for getting the job I have been assigned to do done. I think that voting is a very key part of our democracy, and there have been, before the election, a lot of issues and concerns about voting security so it’s something that I’ve always been passionate about and I’m looking forward to working on,” Pinkin said. Wolack said Republicans have a difficult time gaining traction in the county. “The election results were essentially
as I had expected. It seems most people vote party lines and judging by the vote count, this year was another example. The people have voted and that’s the result, but it’s very difficult for the minority party to give a good challenge in Middlesex County,” Wolak said. “I believe its been over a decade or two since a Republican has won a seat in the county. I only wish people would stop to think how much better their lives have been since the last election and if their answer is ‘not much better’ than I would think it would be time for a challenger with new fresh ideas. How can our society have a paradigm shift if the same worn governmental philosophy is used and the same party is the majority for decades? I hope this can change in the future.” Wolak said it was a good run, and thanks the more than 100,000 people who voted for him. “I enjoyed the run, but it would have been an exciting thing for Middlesex County if I was able to come out the victor and install some of the new fresh ideas into running our government. Let’s hope this happens next year,” Wolak said.
