ennis has become a big sport in the Kharkover household. Mom Irina got both her daughters, Pauline and Olivia, into the sport and the two have blossomed into fine tennis players. Pauline Kharkover is currently competing for the Drexel University women’s tennis team after walking onto the team during her freshman year, while Olivia Kharkover just wrapped up an impressive career for the Old Bridge High School girls tennis squad. In fact, Olivia Kharkover made history this fall as the first player from the Old Bridge girls tennis program to sign a letter of intent at the NCAA Division I level, committing to play for the Sacred Heart University women’s tennis team. “I have always wanted to play Division I tennis,” Olivia Kharkover said. “Being the first Old Bridge girls tennis player to be a Division I commit is a great achievement. Sacred Heart University is a good school that has great athletics and academics. I’m going to play against great players from different schools. It’s going to be a great experience for me.” As Old Bridge’s No. 1 singles player the last three seasons, Olivia Kharkover won the Greater Middlesex Conference Red Division title twice, earned all-conference honors two times, and in both her sophomore and junior seasons placed third in the conference tournament. She is the first Old Bridge girls tennis player to receive all-conference honors as a sophomore. Getting that achievement meant a lot to Olivia Kharkover, who says she will always cherish that accomplishment for the school’s tennis program. Olivia Kharkover compiled a 25-7 record during her sophomore and junior seasons. She stepped into the No. 1 singles slot during her first season on the team. Unable to compete her freshman year because of an injury, Olivia Kharkover was excited to start her career for the Knights when she suited up during the 2018 campaign.

From playing the top player on each team to the fun times she shared with all her teammates in practice and off the court, the high school girls tennis experience was a great one for Olivia Kharkover, she said. “It was a good opportunity to play girls around my level and see how everyone plays,” she said. “My teammates were always supporting me. Them and my coaches played a big role in my success.”
Kharkover had competed and trained competitively throughout her entire time on the tennis court since she was 7 years old. When she was 14, she placed second at the Junior Team Tennis National Championships. That same year, she got to go overseas and train in Ukraine for three months, plac(Continued on page 7)
our departing members of the Sayreville Board of Education have been recognized for their service. The board’s Dec. 15 meeting marked the final appearance of Phyllis Batko, Christopher Callahan, Danielle Pieloch and Karen Rubio as members of the school’s governing body. Their terms will officially end on Dec. 31. Batko and Rubio did not seek re-election in the Nov. 3 race, while Callahan and Pieloch were unsuccessful in winning an available three-year term on the ballot. Alison Napolitano, Eloy Fernandez and Eileen Pabon won the seats in the Nov. 3 election, as certified by Middlesex County on Nov. 20. Patrick Walsh won a one-year, unexpired term as a write-in candidate. All four departing members received a plaque in recognition of their service to the Sayreville School District. “We would like to thank each and every board member for their outstanding service to not only our school district, but, most importantly, to our students and staff,” Superintendent of Schools Richard Labbe said on Dec. 15. “You are all remarkable human beings, you are all incredible leaders and you are all going to be sorely missed by not only the members of this board and our administration, but by our entire school community.” Batko joined the board in 2005 and, prior to her departure in 2021, was the longest-serving member. “Since I started as superintendent, you [Batko] have been here and not only have you impressed me on a financial level, you are by far one of the smartest people I’ve ever met with regard to finances,” Labbe said. “You demonstrated that so often during our finance meetings, but also with (Continued on page 7)

D&R Greenway Land Trust releases new video featuring Babe Ruth’s granddaughter
L
ittle Leaguers and their families will be inspired by watching D&R Greenway’s latest video “Fields of Dreams” featuring sports and the outdoors in the starring role. Linda Ruth Tosetti, granddaughter of legendary home-run hitter Babe Ruth, tells personal stories about the Babe’s early life and how he became motivated to become a baseball player. “My grandfather looked up to Father Mathais, a mountain of a man, and Babe stood head and shoulders over the other kids,” Tosetti said in a prepared statement regarding her grandfather’s mentor at a Catholic school. Viewers are treated to historic photos of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor from Babe Ruth’s youth. Sports fans will hear the story of how he learned to throw. The video begins with D&R Greenway trustee James Fiorentino, an artist who has painted many of baseball’s legendary players. Fiorentino was the youngest artist ever to have his art featured in the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York, when he was only 15 years of age. Having begun his sports art career with Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams, Fiorentino became a college baseball player himself, according to the statement. He talks about the connection he feels to the land

while outdoors in the field, and how important this is in forming a lifelong love of nature. Since 1989, D&R Greenway has permanently protected over 21,000 acres of land in central New Jersey. Fiorentino became vice chair of the Board of Trustees of the land trust in 2019, according to the statement. Farm View Fields and Greenway Meadows parks in Princeton were both saved from housing developments and preserved in 2001 through the leadership of D&R Greenway. These parks provide baseball and soccer fields, as well as places to walk and experience the outdoors, according to the statement. In the video, D&R Greenway’s President and CEO Linda Mead shares that being outdoors in nature cultivates creativity and calm in children who are known to have ADHD, according to the statement. The viewer learns that, in fact, Babe Ruth

may have had “nature-deficit disorder,” a g term coined by author Richard Louv in his o book “Last Child in the Woods” published r ( in 2005. Tosetti insists that, throughout his leg- F endary life, her grandfather was sustained d by nature. “He was a fisherman and huntsman. ( That’s where he got his solace,” she said in S the statement. During the past year, D&R Greenway partnered with the Trenton Thunder baseball team at Waterfront Park in Trenton where parts of the video were filmed. “The way many, many people connect with nature and the outdoors is through the sports their children play when they are young,” Mead said in the statement. High school students from the Latin American Legal Defense and Education Fund’s FUTURO program share how they feel when they are out in nature, according to the statement. These students have worked in partnership with D&R Greenway over the past year, learning about nature’s benefits, clean water and open spaces. In contrast to being indoors during the pandemic, these students’ words about “a good lost” while outside on a wide, open field will stick with the viewer for a long time. Sayreville schools expect to continue hybrid plan in January
By MATTHEW SOCKOL
Staff Writer
SAYREVILLE – Students in the Sayreville School District are scheduled to continue receiving instruction through a hybrid model that combines in-person and remote learning in January 2021. Superintendent of Schools Richard Labbe provided an update on the district’s schedule in a Dec. 21 announcement. During the 2020-21 school year, because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, many Sayreville students have been receiving their education in a hybrid model that consists of in-person instruction and remote instruction. Two cohorts of students have been attending school on alternating days. Some students have only been receiving remote instruction if their parents selected that option at the beginning of the school year. According to Labbe, pupils in kindergarten through fifth grade are in phase 2b of the district’s plan where the cohorts receive in-person instruction on two days (Mondays and Tuesdays or Thursdays and Fridays) and remote instruction on three days. Students at Sayreville Middle School (SMS) and Sayreville War Memorial High School (SWMHS) – sixth to 12th grade –
are in phase 2a where the cohorts participate together for in-person instruction on Tuesdays and Thursdays. There is also a third cohort of pre-Kindergarten pupils and self-contained students who receive in-person instruction on four days: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. The first week of January, however, will provide only two in-person days on Jan. 5 (a Tuesday) and Jan. 7 (a Thursday). The remainder of the week will be fully remote, according to Labbe. The middle school, high school, prekindergarten and self-contained students will receive in-person instruction on both days, according to Labbe. The two cohorts of kindergarten through fifth grade pupils will receive one day each of in-person instruction, the day depending on their cohort. For the remainder of January, excluding Jan. 18 (Martin Luther King Day where the schools will be closed), the students are scheduled to continue receiving the hybrid model as intended. Kindergarten through fifth grade pupils will have three days of in-person learning, middle and high school students will have two days of in-person learning, and pre-Kindergarten and selfcontained students will have four days of in-person learning, according to Labbe.

Only I could push myself to where I wanted to be.” Olivia Kharkover’s senior year at Old Bridge was unlike her prior seasons because of the coronavirus pandemic, only getting to compete in seven matches and not in any conference or state tournaments. In those seven matches, she went 4-3 and her straight set victory against North Brunswick Township High School’s Erin Tan on Oct. 5 helped Old Bridge win its only match of the season. Even though her senior season was conducted under different circumstances than usual, it didn’t take away from Olivia Kharkover having a great experience on the tennis court one last time for Old Bridge. “I still had a good time,” Olivia Kharkover said. “I got to have an experience of being a team captain. Novenas
ST. JUDE NOVENA May the sacred heart of Jesus be the adored, glorified, loved and preserved throughout the world now and forever. Sacred heart of Jesus pray for us. St. Jude, worker of miracles, pray for us. St. Jude, hope of the hopeless, pray for us. Say this prayer nine times a day. By the eighth day your prayer will be answered. Say it for nine days. It has never been known to fail. Publication must be promised. Thank you, St. Jude.
G.B.
Novenas PRAYER IS POWERFUL Oh, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine of splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this petition. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my Mother. Oh Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse in thee (3Xs). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3Xs). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. + Say this prayer 3 consecutive days and publish prayer after petition is granted. Do not despair. Additional advice and petition. Pray the Rosary regularly. F.A.M.
