It brings me great joy to present phenomenal people of color from Reading Pa., who are doing well and representing our culture and people with the expectation of giving it your ALL and not settling. The first highlight of 2014 is no other than my child, Tanija Pollard, a PreMed Major at Towson University, studying to become a Pediatrician. Ever since she was a little girl I remember her telling me she wanted to become a doctor, typically a child has multiple answers when asked what they would like to become when they grow up, however over the course of Tanija’s childhood, 100% of the time her answer was a doctor. So Dr. Pollard:
What advice do you have for young black children? Break the stereotype that is set upon us, by doing any and all things you put your mind to. Whatever your dream is, live it, and become it.
What did your grandmother Anna June Black mean to you? How do you feel about the scholarship in her name? She meant the world to me. She was the rock of the family everywhere she went she was loved and respected. She was a great mother, grandmother, Aunt, and friend to so many people. I feel good about the scholarship; it allows her name to live on and remembered. She was a woman of substance that stood for something, so it is only right she be honored in such away.
Who were positive influences in your life and how? My mother Tia Jackson and you my father for pushing me and helping me get a great education. My grandparents Barry Jackson, Charlene Jackson, and Geraldine Pollard for always being there and being a strong backbone. My brother Messyah Pollard, I wanna be role model for him to look up to and Ms. Marmarou, my favorite teacher who always gave me sound advice on following my dreams.
Why have you chosen to become a Pediatrician? I love children and science, my Pediatrician Dr. Anzalone father of football standout Alex Anzalone has given me positive words of encouragement and stated,” he would allow me to shadow him for a few days to learn more of the day in and day out daily routines of this profession.”
What are some of your life goals? To accomplish everything I set out to do, becoming a pediatrician and creating cures to prevent disease in sick children. I do not want to just treat them I want to establish preventative measures that will rid children of the many illnesses that affect their overall health. I want to also be a part of iCARE it is a lifestyle that incorporates the values of changing cultural norms and human behaviors that for so long have hindered a non-existent black community.
What is the last book you read? What did you learn? Dr. Ben Carson, Gifted Hands. No matter what you go through have faith and all things are possible and make your dreams your reality.
If you could do anything in this world and knew you wouldn’t fail what you would do? Hmmm well becoming a Pediatrician comes to mind so I guess you could say I am already living it.
Good answer, you sound like your father lol what is something else you’d do if you knew you wouldn’t fail?I would see to it that NO child goes without food. I would like to feed every starving child with nutritional meals, especially breakfast to ensure all children start their day with a healthy meal is essential to getting a jumpstart to the day.

Interesting you say that because a focal point of iCARE will be feeding those less fortunate, sounds like we just added something to the family business plan. What is a personal quote you live by and use in your daily life? “When you are willing to breathe as bad as you wanna succeed, then you will be successful
Well there you have it folks this, here is a glimpse into the life of a beautiful young woman who I have seen grow from a baby to a teen to an intelligent and remarkable young woman. Chocolate Times each month will do its roll to empower, highlight, and inspire people of color who are big dreamers and set the bar above and beyond minimal expectations. Tanija Pollard is a bright, brilliant young woman who is a representation of the message we are getting across. Black, educated, and gifted it’s a pleasure for me to call her my daughter. Chocolate Times new beginnings, empowering a community, and changing the norms.

New STD superbug may be deadlier than AIDS; kills in a matter of days There is a new sexually transmitted superbug that experts say may be more deadly that AIDS. According to a CNBC report, an antibioticresistant strain of gonorrhea is more aggressive than the HIV virus, which means the potential to infect the public will be greater. Like most STDs, gonorrhea is usually transmitted through unprotected sexual contact and if left untreated, can cause severe medical complications, such as infertility in women, debilitating pain, sterility in men and life threatening heart infections. Alan Christianson, a doctor of naturopathic medicine, thinks this new strain has the power to rack up more fatalities than AIDS. To date, more than the 30 million people have already died worldwide from AIDS-related complications. "Getting gonorrhea from this strain might put someone into septic shock and death in a matter of days," said Christianson. "This is very dangerous."William Smith, executive director of the National Coalition of STD Directors, echoed that sentiment. “It’s an emergency situation. As time moves on, it’s getting more hazardous,” said Smith. According to the Centers for Disease Control, though no cases of the superbug officially called H041 were found in the US, steps must be taken to deal with the potential risks. Gonorrhea can go undetected in some affected by the disease, showing no outward symptoms in about half of women and in 5 percent of men, which adds another level of difficulty in getting ahead of it. This strain of STD which is resistant to antibiotic, reportedly kills half of those exposed and infects one in 20 hospital patients—which raises the threat of an outbreak to emergency levels. Then there is the high cost of combating sexually transmitted diseases in general. The CDC's tally to treat 20 million cases annually is approximately $16 billion. Of that 20 million STD cases, a reported 800,000 between the ages of 15 to 24, are infected with gonorrhea. Even more alarming, some doctors believe the STD war is too costly to win.
