This Is: John 5 Interview by Vikki Sin Few guitarists have been lucky enough to land long term gigs with not one, but 2 of their favorite artists, but then not everyone is John 5. Having played extensively with rock powerhouses Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie, not to mention collabs with David Lee Roth, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and childhood hero Paul Stanley to name a few, this legend in the making has also kept us entertained with 7 solo albums; the latest of which, “God Told Me To’ is being released this coming May. Looks like his childhood prayers came true, an amusing thing given his heavily horror themed resume. But despite all the makings for a well-deserved rock star attitude, he’s incredibly down to Earth, discussing with me the tribulations of today’s music industry and the favorite of his 500 guitars. Read on for more, and catch John 5 in action on tour with Rob Zombie and Megadeth, kicking off May 11th… V.S. PI: You’re heading out again with Rob Zombie on tour this summer. Having gone from Manson to Zombie, do you feel the shock rock image lends to your creativity as an artist? Do you like getting dressed up to perform? J5: You know…that’s a great question. We all had things that we loved that really stuck with you your whole life. You see things; you’re like “oh, I used to love that as a kid”. When I was a kid I loved monsters- Universal monsters- you know, like Frankenstein, Wolfman, the mummies, things like that, and I loved KISS. Part of the reason I loved KISS is they looked like monsters with guitars, so it’s like being a kid. You get to dress up and do all these things, when you get up on stage in front of all those screaming people and I just, I couldn’t ask for anything more. I mean, it’s the greatest thing ever and I was such a fan of Rob Zombie and White Zombie before I even got in the band so I couldn’t be happier and it couldn’t be a better situation because it’s like Halloween every night and it’s so fun, you know. I love it. PI: Speaking of Manson, most people started really knowing of you during that period. How important do you feel it was for your career to hook up with Manson? He gave you your name. How do you feel that helped define your career? J5: Well, you know, I’m very up front and honest, and yeah, Manson did put me out into the public eye and he gave me my name, he gave me John 5, and a lot of people were introduced to me from being in Marilyn Manson, which I love and appreciate. I loved being in Marilyn Manson. I was a HUGE fan before I was even in the band, so I owe a lot of that to Manson and it’s just like with KISS, you know, when Ace Frehley left KISS he wasn’t gonna change his name to like, Paul Frehley, you know? People know him as Ace. So that’s why I kept the name. PI: Tell us a little bit about your upcoming album “God Told Me To”. What was your thought process going into this album? J5: With the title, “God Told Me To”, when terrible crime happens, serial killers, (Cont’d)
they always say “Hey, why did you do this?” and they say “Oh, God told me to” or something like that. With this, the title, I really wanted this so bad as a kid, I wanted to be a successful musician and I would go to church like on Christmas, I never went to church, but I did as a kid and I would always pray to be a successful musician and that’s kind of why I have that title. It’s kind of like a play on words, the yin and the yang. It could mean a terrible thing or it could mean a very positive thing. But, it’s a great CD. There’s a DVD with it, an hour long DVD, and it shows me in the studio recording the stuff. It shows like a day in the life on tour. There’s also- this is kind of interestingthere’s a horror host that hosts the DVD. A horror host is like back in the day you would have things like Sir Graves or Vampira introducing movies. You might know Elvira or something like that. It’s got something like that. It’s great. I’m really proud of it and I think people are gonna enjoy it. PI: If you had to give up playing guitar and you were made to pick any other instrument that you could master, what would you switch to, if you had to choose? J5: Well, you know, first of all, these are great questions. (Laughs) I would say, it might sound funny, but I love the banjo and I love pedal steel. But, you don’t see a lot of rock star banjo players or pedal steel players, that’s for sure. But, you know, I do really appreciate those instruments a lot. (PI) Maybe you wanna hook up with Hank3 at some point. (J5) Yea, there ya go. I love him. PI: How many guitars do you own, and what would be your favorite? J5: I have one of the first solid body electric guitars made. It’s called the Fender Broadcaster, and it’s one of the first 127 guitars made, ever. So, that’s my favorite, but the amount of guitars I have, I think it’s maybe close to 500. Yea, it’s a lot. I know. PI: So I read an interview, and it was funny, you said you had recently listened to N.W.A. and you thought it was pretty cool. If there was someone “shocking” you would choose to work with, maybe in the hip hop arena, who would you love to lend your guitar skills to? J5: You know, I listen to N.W.A. and it’s very aggressive, okay? And that’s why I was like “This is really good!” and it would be cool, because I would like the music to be aggressive as well, so I don’t know, it could be anyone. Eminem, Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg…anybody like that, because I think I could make some really aggressive, cool music! (PI) Now that would be something to see. (J5) I think it would! PI: What are some of the things you like to do when you’re not touring; when you’re not guitar in hand? Do you have any other hobbies? J5: I think the only one I really like to do is I like to go to the movies. But I think that’s it, really. I just love just having the guitar in my hand. I just really love it so much. So, probably just going to the movies. PI: You can’t shock anybody any more. It’s gone away. You’ve dealt with it in Manson, and now you can write about serial killers and it seems like you don’t get any blame anymore and you just can’t shock people. Where do you think that’s going to take the direction of shock rock music? J5: I think we’ve pushed it as far as we could push it. Not me, but we as the music, and shock in general. I think it’s all up to great songs. The music business has changed SO much now. It is drastically different (Cont’d)

and I think it’s all up to people writing really good songs. I mean, the music business is in such disarray right now. Everybody in the record companies and things like that, they’re all hiding under their desks. They don’t know what’s going on, so I don’t know. I think people are just trying to figure out how to sell records again, instead of just shocking people. They’re just trying to figure out how to make a buck now. We’re in a weird time right now, that’s for sure, and we have been. I was talking to my friends kids and I was like “Are you guys gonna buy the new this or that?” and they were like “No, no, we just get it off the internet” and I was like “You guys don’t pay for it?” and he’s like “No. What do you mean pay for it?” They – I’m not exaggerating- they didn’t understand. They weren’t around for music stores. They were never around for like, CD stores. They’re younger kids and they were just like “No, this is how you get it. Why should we pay $15 for a CD or something, when we can get it for 10 seconds for free?” It’s true. It’s just such a weird time right now and it’s just like if I said to you “You have to pay me $20 to go outside and breathe this air” you’d be like “What are you talking about?” That’s how it was for them. They were so shocked. (PI) I find that it’s constant touring and merchandise. A lot of bands making sure they have shocking merchandise with funny things on it. That’s where they’re making their money anymore. It’s almost impossible to sell records. (J5) You hit it right on the head. You’re very smart. (Laughs) It’s all about touring and merchandise. That’s about it. And until something changes…I don’t know when it’s gonna change or if it ever can change, ya know? Just like when people had 45s and they had 8 tracks, and that was it. Times have changed so much, but who knows if it will get past this digital world. Maybe music will become just free. Who knows? PI: What can we expect from you after tour? Anything else you’re working on that you can let us know about? J5: I just finished up the score for Rob Zombie’s movie ‘Lords of Salem’. I worked with Skynyrd on their next record, worked a little bit with Rod Stewart for his upcoming record, and then we’re gonna be doing the new Zombie record at the end of this Megadeth tour. (PI) No shortage of projects for you. (J5) I know! PI: Thanks so much for taking time out of your busy schedule to talk with us and give us a chance to get Plug’d In. J5: Great, thank you!

Dear Dead Abby Abby was born and raised in the coal regions of Northeastern Pennsylvania. The oldest of eight, she constantly had her younger brothers and sisters asking her questions about everything from how things work to why that boy threw dirt on her. She’d try to steer them straight with her advice, though sometimes she could be a bit sarcastic. Abby also had an uncanny ability to see the truth in people, despite what they tried to portray with their lies. Unfortunately, this led the locals to believe that she was with surrounded with dark forces. The summer before her final year of school, Abby was sentenced to death by hanging, without a proper trial, simply stating that she was a witch. Abby can’t recognize the faces of her family through death, but she answers questions, thinking it might be one of her siblings needing her guidance. Q. If you could date any living actor or musician, who would it be and why? Anon A. I don’t know, I’veever really thought about it. Zakk Wylde, without the big scruffy beard. Some facial hair, but not the old man on the mountain look. He’s hot. Those muscles. Those eyes. That voice. He can serenade me all day and all night, and he’d dwarf my tiny frame. I’d climb him like a monkey. He’s like the Greek god, Zeus. Mmmm Q. Now chicken is the worst thing you can possibly eat. I have no idea what to believe. Help me out here please! K.L.A. A. Fruits and vegetables. You really can’t go wrong with that. I know what you mean though. One week something is so good for you, and the next week you shouldn’t be eating it. Basically, go with your own opinion. If you can’t pronounce the ingredients on the label, steer clear. If it has a bunch of excess that you don’t think is necessary, go with something else. Eat more whole, unprocessed foods. Pay attention to how you feel after eating something as well. If it makes you feel heavy and sluggish, avoid it in the future. Q. I found a bag of weed in the bathroom at school. My buddies and i tried some and I hated it. I still have it hidden at home, but now my buddies want to smoke it again. I don't want to. What do I tell them without seeming like I'm lame? F.D. A. Grow a spine and stand up for yourself. Be honest, that you don’t like the way it makes you feel. Smoking it doesn’t have any benefits. As the sober one in the midst, you’ll see how stupid it really makes people as well. This society cares too much about fitting in and being liked by everyone else and they’re afraid to be an individual. If I had been a spineless lemming, I probably would have died of old age in my bed, but I wasn’t going to pretend to be something that I wasn’t just to fit in. You’ll find out that it doesn’t mean near as much as you think it does. Q. Tupac's hologram at Coachella? What do you think? Will this change concerts and music forever? A.S. A. No, because no matter how realistic it may seem, it will never be them. You can go see all the dead guy concerts you want, but you’ll never be able to say I saw him perform live. Even if they’re alive, say in another country on tour projecting the concert here, you still won’t be at a live and in person concert. There will never be a substitution to the real deal. Q. My boyfriend has body odor. I don't know if he can't smell it but he stinks! How do I tell him I'm sick of it? B.B A. Daily showers. Does he wear deodorant? Try getting him a stronger version, made specifically for heavy sweaters. Try strong scented shower gels and after shower spray. If he questions you, just play it off that you thought the scent would smell really good on him or something like that. Does he eat a lot of spicy foods? That can cause bad body odor as well. If nothing seems to work, he could have hyperhidrosis or some other medical factor that could explain it.

Artist Spotlight: Nikita Santiago Interview and Photos by Jessica Dittrich PI: How did you get involved in music and what did you do prior to music? NS: I've been involved with music for quite some time; if you count being in the school band. (Laughs) My first instrument was the trombone and I played that for 10years. I was also into different activities as a kid, but always found enjoyment playing music. PI: You have an awesome voice, but what actually drew you to play bass? NS: A bunch of friends in high school wanted to start a band. Everyone had their instrument picked out and I had last call. I originally wanted to play drums because I already knew how to, but bass turned out to be the best bet though. I get to move around and fully express my emotions. Learning something new at the time was fun. I got my bass and taught myself. Out of all my friends who wanted to start the band I am the only one who followed through with it. PI: What are your favorite styles of music? NS: I am very diverse when it comes to music. I was raised on Aerosmith, Guns N Roses, Bon Jovi, Pantera, Metallica, etc. In high school I was really into Punk/Ska, and I like to listen to them now because it reminds me of my adolescence, carelessness, and rebellion. If you look at my collection, I have all different genres I enjoy listening to. You will rarely, if ever, hear me say "OMG, what are we listening to?" in a negative way. PI: Can you give us a brief history of what bands you have been involved in? NS: I started in the local scene 9 years ago in a band called Seduce the Machine. S.T.M. had a falling out (what band doesn't), and with the remaining members of S.T.M. we formed Apocryfiend. New sound, new vocals, we needed a new name. Apocryfiend then got shaky and I left. About a month later Into The Dirt asked me to audition. We all felt each others vibes, and grooved together. Then of course there was a I.T.D. falling out, and I went back to Apocryfiend. I also played with CHINGA! Juggling two bands for a year got to be too much for me at the time, so I felt it was time to leave and stick with Apocryfiend. I then left Apocryfiend due to reasons of my own, and now I am back at square one. I’m searching for more liked minded people to play music with. Don't get me wrong, I still strongly support CHINGA! and Apocryfiend, they're my brothers. PI: Can you explain what the meaning behind the song “Without” is? NS: This was a rough time in my life when a lot of people I cared about passed away within months of each other. One really hit hard once I saw the impact of how many lives were touched, and Apocryfiend wrote the music. Once they started jamming the song the lyrics just came to me. It hurts to sing, but it also makes me release all my emotions and makes me feel better. I don't sing the song just to the crowd, I sing it for those who have left us way to soon. There is one line that I love to belt out "everyone you love will leave, everyone you love will leave you behind". Basically, don't take any relationship you cherish for granted, time is ticking for all of us. Every show I play, I play as if it my last because it’s what I enjoy the most, and it makes me feel good when all is said and done. PI: Is there any advice you would give to women out there who want to get involved in music & think it’s just a man’s world? NS: Come on, we don't live in the 1900's any more. I will not stay in the kitchen all day. (Cont’d)
Music is not a man’s world, I've seen some chicks play better then men do. Its music, it’s about how much time and effort you are wiling to put forth. Advice… it’s not easy whether you’re a chic or dude. You really have to ask yourself, "How much do I want this?” "Do I love music, or just love listening to what others create?”Am I ready to work a fulltime job that doesn't pay much?" Whether you like it or not being a musician is a hard deal and there's a lot of time and money you have to put into it. Ladies, my best advice is to man up and do it. I'm not a coddler. I was always told if I want something bad enough to just do it and never give up. PI: You’ve done some promotional work and modeling for The Lead Farmer Girls. How do you feel about modeling and is this something you would want to take further? NS: I am very glad that I was asked to be a Lead Farmer Girl and all the pictures of live shows are fun. People don't expect me to get active on stage when they see this little person with a big bass guitar. Even when I sing they don't expect it, its a fun little surprise, so with all the pictures its cool to catch the action that everyone doesn't get to see on a daily basis. With becoming a L.F.G. model I enjoy it and it helps promote local bands. Who doesn't want to see a pretty girl and whatever local band t-shirt she is wearing. Actually when I was younger I was a little beauty pageant queen, (Laughs) and next to music it’s something I've always enjoyed (The pictures being taken, not dressing up like Barbie in a gown). I'm not sure how I could take it further, but its fun. PI: What/ who would you say are your biggest influences whether music or life in general? NS: My mom is a big influence. She's always been my back bone and support. I was always told to never give up by both my parents, and to do what makes me happy. Mom just wishes I would sing more, so she can understand what I'm saying. As for musical influences, ever since I got into the band Kittie, I've looked up to Jenn Arroyo, another Latina bass player in the metal scene. I have a lot of influences, and they keep growing. One of my favorite bassist is Flea. It may be cliché, but it was the type of music I was raised on. Like I said though, there are tons if different influences, and its not solely bassist. PI: Thank you so much for taking the time to do this interview w/ me and giving us the chance to get Plug’d In. NS: No! No! No! Thank you Plug'd In!

Spotlight On: Plug N Play Computers and Games Interview and Photos by Michael Demos I’m not a gamer…at least not anymore. I wish I was, but I just don’t have the time for it. I had the Commodore 64, Atari, N.E.S., Sega Genesis…I had them all. Now I have the Xbox 360, but it’s not for me, it’s for my kids. I’ll admit it…my kids are video game nuts. I try to be responsible and limit the amount of time they play, but I also think it develops good technical skills and imagination. I’ll put money down that my 4 year old and 9 year old will beat most adults in car racing games. My kids will rip through a video game pretty quickly. At $60 a pop it becomes pretty expensive. Thank god for Plug N Play Computers and Games in Reading, Pa. They’re celebrating their 2 year anniversary and I sat down with owner Dan to get the scoop on just what’s going down at Plug N Play. M.D. PI: Tell us a little about Plug N Play. How did it come about to opening your first store? DB: It all first started when my sister brought home her new boyfriend, now her husband, Nate back in early the 2000's. Nate and I shared an immediate connection through technology and gaming, and thus Plug 'N Play - Computers and Games was born. PI: How did the partnership with Nate come about? Have you know each other long? DB: The partnership was originally formed between Nate, my father, and I about 2 years ago this month (April). Nate and I have known each other since high school. My father and I, about (Laughs) PI: Why did you choose the location on Kutztown Rd. in Reading Pa? DB: Nate and I both spent a lot of time living and working in the city of Reading. We have not found a more loyal, and respectful, community in the area. PI: What qualifies you to be a video game store owner? What are your gaming credentials? DB: All you really need is a great work ethic, a little bit of imagination, and a great family. PI: What is the primary focus of Plug N Play? What experience can you bring to your customers that they can’t get anywhere else? DB: Our Primary focus is CUSTOMER SERVICE. There's such lack of it in today's world and we hope to bring a lot back to the customer. PI: Why shouldn’t I just shop at the big box retailers? Wouldn’t it be cheaper there? DB: On the contrary, our prices are $3-$10 cheaper than any of the other bigger chains. All the other retailer’s look at you as a number. Here, you're a friend. (Cont’d)
PI: Is there a level of competition between you guys and the bigger stores? What about other independent game store owners? DB: Competition keeps us on par, allowing us to possess a very sharp edge against the competition. PI: Can you justify the high prices for new games. 65 $ is quite a bit of money don't you think? Why are games so expensive? DB: Justify? No. Deal with? Yes. The current market price structure of new games is something we all have to deal with. In our opinion, new game prices should be based on a “game value to demand” fixed cost price schedule. Prices needed to be based on the title. For instance, a game like "Rogue Warrior" for XBOX360 should not have been sold at a $60price tag…maybe $20, but not $60. However, a game like "Skyrim", I would of paid well over $100 for. It’s about charging the correct price for the correct type of game. The gaming industry needs to adopt a pricing structure model that is similar to new and used cars. The better made, rarer cars will always be sold for more because they're worth more. Ultimately, that’s how the used and retro markets of previous generation game system are currently structured. It’s all based on supply and demand. PI: Some people are into vintage systems. Why do you think that is when the stuff coming out now is so amazing? DB: Vintage video games are what a lot people grew up with. These games defined our childhood and now looking back its fun to revisit these systems/games from time to time. PI: Do you sell vintage games or systems? DB: Sure do! In our opinion, any type of game store needs to pay homage to the retro/classic systems. PI: You currently offer trades and cash/store credit for used systems and games. Will selling my old stuff at your store fetch me the best price? DB: You will definitely get the best trades prices though us. We have a solid policy of offering 10% more on anything that’s traded in. PI: You guys also do computer repair. What kind of computer services do you offer? DB: We offer the most comprehensive, lowest cost computer repair services around! A free diagnosis, no-money up front, 100% trustworthy, FIX it as you would policy that cannot be matched anywhere else. PI: What is the most popular gaming system in your opinion and why? DB: In my opinion, all gaming systems are great in their own right. Some prefer XBOX360 - Some prefer PS3, others the Wii. I personally spend most of my time on XBOX360, same goes for Nate. (Cont’d)
PI: Describe the “average” gamer. DB: Nowadays, the average gamer really is anyone…You, me, really anyone can now fit the profile of a gamer. PI: What is in the future for Plug N Play? DB: The Future is very bright for Plug 'N Play - We are currently in the process of setting up a 2nd store this year! PI: Tell us a little bit more about the second store. Where will it be and what is the plan for it? DB: Plug 'N Play II will most likely be based somewhere in Reading, in close proximity of our first store. The 2nd store will be a chip of the old block where customer service, low prices, highest trade values, and reliable/trustworthy pc repair services will always be the highest priority. Several details are still in the works but things are panning out very nicely in Cyrodiil. (Laughs) PI: Thanks for sitting down with us and giving us a chance to get Plug’d In! DB: Thanks Mike - Always a pleasure.

Wednesday Warrior Recap: Call of duty MW3 Review by Matt Seitz of Pa Hardcore Gaming PA Hardcore Gaming is the newest name in the gaming scene starting in early 2012, and they are a name to be reckoned with. They don’t get to say they are a member of PAHCG if they don’t have Hardcore gaming blood in their system. We are some of the most intense, “no holds bar” gamers in the area with one mission -- to find gamers that have the same passion and drive to game on a competitive level and reign supreme. To find these gamers, we are setting up local tournaments all over to see who the top Escalon in local gaming is! Wednesday April 18th, PA Hardcore Gaming kicked off its Wednesday Warrior series at 1up Collectables. We had 57 people attend and had 12 teams represented in the double elimination Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 Tournament. If you don’t know what Call of Duty is and you call yourself a gamer, you need to stop reading this article right now and check your DS to see if your Pokémon just evolved because this isn’t for you. If you do know what Call of Duty is and you enjoy this game, you missed out on one hell of an event! Imagine 57 people crammed into a basement of the most bad-ass comic book store with 1 goal in mind…to kill everyone on the other team that opposes you and not leave till you are named the champion. Here is how it all went down… Round 1 was action packed with 6 teams advancing through game types such as Kill Confirmed, Domination, Demolition, Capture the Flag and Sabotage. We started off with 12 teams - EOS, EOS gb, Cloud N9NE, Mindless Gamers, Insert Name here, Purple People Eaters, Team Syk, Mist, Satan’s Gummy Bears, Goon, Team PA, Outcasts. There was no laughing, fun game play here. From the word “go” it was kill or be killed and that was it. If your score was higher in the end you moved on. If you were the unfortunate team to be on the short end of the shit stick, you went down into the loser’s bracket, which we like to call the dungeon. Reason…no one likes to be stuck in a hole and have to claw their way back to the top. In the dungeon, every round is cut throat 5 minutes, 30 tags in Kill Confirmed. After Round 1, we had Goons, Gummies, Insert Name Here, Mindless, Team PA and Outcasts moving on. Round 2 is where the blood bath ensued, and when I tell you there were no friends in the basement, I mean it. The true colors where shown when everyone got an early preview of the Championship round Goons vs. Gummies. From the word “go”, the taunts and chatter were being shouted as these teams went back and forth in Capture the Flag. What’s the worst thing someone could say to you in the middle of game that will piss you off to no end? “Justin Fucking Bieber just took your flag!” There is nothing more insulting then hearing that shit, and it (Cont’d)
sure burned deep! In the end, Gummies were able to claim the victory. After working their way out of the dungeon, Goons got their rematch in the championship round. There were no words this time, just silent controller gripping “let’s get it on” UFC style. Championship round was best of 3. It started off with Search and Destroy and ended with Domination. Only one team left victorious, and it was Satan’s Gummy Bears who took home Episode 1of the Wednesday Warrior Champs! When the dust settled and the nerd sweat smell lingered through the basement, we awarded the winners with over $60 in prize packages from 3 sponsors - 1up Collectables, GameStop and Rocky’s Pizza. The Wednesday Warrior series will take place monthly at 1up Collectables! Stay tuned for what’s next, but don’t miss PAHCG on May 19th at OMG Fest 2 where we find out who is the KING of the Mountain Top!!!
