NORTON CENTER FOR THE ARTS Performing Arts Season

welcome

TO A NEW SEASON

OF INCREDIBLE

PERFORMING ARTS

2017-2018 Friends,

Welcome to another spectacular season of programs at the Norton Center for the Arts. We are proud to continue to offer our community a full spectrum of performing arts. We hand-pick from the world’s finest artists to create a vibrant and well-rounded season, and then invite you to become the curator and create your own series! Instead of our selecting pre-determined series’ from which you can choose, such as Broadway, Rock and Pops, Jazz and World, or Classical, we encourage you to create your own series based on your own themes, availability and budget. You can still create a more conventional series, such as those just listed, or mix things up and be creative! Your series reflects your interests and your level of adventure. Your series also helps you to plan arts events all year long. You rock! So, have fun and name your own series on the order form. We’ll post the most creative names that describe your own performance selections. And feel free to tag #MyNortonSeries if you want to share with us via social media. Have a terrific season, and on behalf of the entire Norton Center team, Cheers!

Noam Pikelny

Saturday, September 16, 2017 | 8:00 PM | Weisiger Theatre $38 • $28

Noam Pikelny has emerged as the preeminent banjoist of his generation: a founding member of Punch Brothers, a 3-time Grammy®-nominee, and recipient of the first annual Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass in 2010. His latest album, Universal Favorite is the fourth released under his own name, but it’s truly his solo debut. His previous efforts— including 2011’s Beat the Devil and Carry a Rail and 2014’s landmark Noam Pikelny Plays Kenny Baker Plays Bill Monroe— were full-band affairs that revealed his abilities as a dynamic bandleader while reinforcing his reputation as an inventive accompanist. In his second Norton Center appearance, and Weisiger Theatre debut, this concert will feature original music and explosive covers that showcase Noam’s unique approach and compositional flair, while coaxing a wide array of sounds and colors out of his instruments, and exploring new possibilities in a solo setting.

His music is always evolving, and he is a master at stretching his skill and imagination to produce amazing results. Getting away with murder can be so much fun... and there’s no better proof than the knock-em-dead hit show that’s earned unanimous raves and won the 2014 Tony Award® for Best Musical—A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder! Direct from New York, where a most gentlemanly NPR critic said he’d “never laughed so hard at a Broadway Musical,” Gentleman’s Guide tells the uproarious story of Monty Navarro, a distant heir to a family fortune who sets out to jump the line of succession by – you guessed it – eliminating the eight pesky relatives (all played by one fearless man) who stand in his way. All the while, Monty must juggle his mistress (she’s after more than just love), his fiancée (she’s his cousin but who’s keeping track?), and the constant threat of landing behind bars! Of course, it will all be worth it if he can slay his way to his inheritance... and be done in time for tea.

Henry Butler

Saturday, November 18, 2017 | 8:00 PM | Weisiger Theatre

$38 • $28

When it comes to jazz and blues, New Orleans is the city that gave and then kept on giving. The musical breeding ground for such giants of traditional jazz as Louis Armstrong, King Oliver and Jelly Roll Morton, The Big Easy also gave rise to a present-day giant, the pianist and singer Henry Butler – a super virtuoso and ebullient performer who embodies the buoyant spirit of his birthplace. Butler can play it all, from early to modern jazz, with plenty of New Orleans R&B peeking through. Blinded by glaucoma as an infant, Butler began his musical studies early in life. After the release of “Fivin’ Around” in 1986, he quickly built an international reputation as an astonishing keyboard artist and a stylistically inclusive performer. If you liked last season’s Music Maker Blues Revue, you’ll love Butler’s solo performance; traditional New Orleans jazz is in the best of hands.

2,000 Degrees: A Fire Odyssey is a three-dimensional exhibition that features whimsical hand-built ceramic sculptures by Japanese artist Kensuke Yamada and exquisite glass creations by Danville native Stephen Rolfe Powell, and highlights new collaborative pieces created by the artists specifically for this show.

tubes of color, mounds of clay, sketches on paper, and drops of paint, they have experienced an odyssey of formation and discovery, manipulated by the hands of two masters and the commonality of two-thousand degrees of heat that binds both the glass and the ceramics.

“War is Only Half the Story” is the tenth-anniversary exhibition of The Aftermath Project, a non-profit, grant-making and educational organization that supports photographers documenting the aftermath of conflict. The exhibition highlights The Aftermath Project’s commitment to educating the public about the true cost of war and the real price of peace through visual storytelling that explores what it means for individuals to learn to live again, to cope with the lingering wounds of war, to rebuild lives and homes destroyed by conflict, to restore broken relationships and recreate civil societies.

Founder and director Sara Terry is a documentary photographer and filmmaker whose own practice has focused on postconflict societies. Her documentary, “Fambul Tok,” which grew out of her long-term still photography project about forgiveness traditions in post-conflict African countries, is about an unprecedented grassroots reconciliation program started by Sierra Leoneans to confront the atrocities of their 1991-2002 civil war, and to reintegrate perpetrators back into their communities.

The Pidgeon sisters have been replaced by the two Constanzuela brothers. But the hilarity remains the same.

Cloud 9

November 9-12, 2017 Written by Caryl Churchill • Directed by Patrick Kagan-Moore This time-shifting comedy is both parody and spoof of the Victorian Empire and its rigid attitudes, especially toward sex. A marvelous send-up and a non-stop round-robin of sexual liaisons.

Twelfth Night

April 18-21, 2018 Written by William Shakespeare • Directed by Jennifer Goff The comedy centers on the twins Viola and Sebastian, who are separated in a shipwreck. Education, Engagement &

Great performances are often just the beginning of a lifelong connection to the creativity that crosses our stages each season. At the Norton Center, we provide opportunities for our audience to deepen its connection to the arts in the following ways: Panel Discussions Context and conversation from Centre College faculty, guest artists, and local experts. These popular 3060 minute talks are provided free of charge, when available.

Notes from the Faculty Featured articles in CentreStage and on the Norton Center blog from select Centre College faculty serve to add depth and further reading surrounding a topic the artist has presented or the overall artist engagement at the Norton Center.

Workshops & Masterclasses Workshops and Masterclasses are hosted by featured guest artists, all experts in their field, in order to allow students and the community the chance to gain hands-on experience while perfecting their craft.

CREATIVE CONVERSATIONS Creative Conversations at the Norton Center shine a light on human interests, current events, and issuebased topics that may challenge our everyday thinking, increase our awareness, and help us to expand our exploration of the human condition. The Norton Center is committed to engaging our campus, local, and regional communities in creative experiences, therefore these conversations often connect directly with academic classes, topics, and discussions already occurring throughout the campus and community. Each event is customselected to education, illuminate, and inspire.

“The Soul of War”as part of The American String Quartet with Phil Klay and Tom Sleigh Phil Klay, author of the National Book Award book “Redeployment,” is a graduate of Dartmouth College and a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He served in Iraq’s Anbar Province from January 2007 to February 2008 as a Public Affairs Officer. After being discharged he went to Hunter College and received an MFA. His writing has appeared in The New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, Granta, Tin House, and elsewhere. Klay, along with select members of The American String Quartet, will discuss literature, art, and the intersection and representation of war in each, alongside a moderator and other panelists. See page 13 in this brochure for more information about these artists. *These events are subject to change, and additional events may be added. Please visit our website to learn more about Creative Conversations and other Education & Engagement opportunities.

Creative Conversations* during the 2017-2018 Season may include: “Racism: Ain’t Nobody Got Time for That!” as part of globalFEST on the Road: The New Golden Age of Latin Music Communities often need a fresh and updated lens to talk about race and diversity. This participatory lecture breaks down stereotypes, uses ‘conscious comedy’, and engages audiences in new conversations about Race, Identity and Privilege. Using honest conversations, audiences will be given social tools to deconstruct interpersonal, as well as, institutional patterns of oppression, so as to heal and proactively address concerns as agents of change. See page 16 in this brochure for more information about these artists.

Brokers & Scalpers

Due to the nature of the performing arts, all dates, programs, and artists are subject to change without notice. The views and opinions expressed by the artists may not necessarily be shared by the Norton Center for the Arts or Centre College.

Tickets to all performances at the Norton Center are available exclusively from the theatre’s own box office and website, http://www.nortoncenter.com. If you purchase tickets from a ticket broker, you may be paying a much higher price than necessary. Ticket brokers may make it appear that they have “special access” to the best seats, but all they do is purchase tickets from our box office and resell them to you at a markup. Even when a broker is operating within the law, you still pay much more than you need to and not one penny of the markup goes to the artist or the theatre. If there is anything wrong with your order purchased from a broker, the Norton Center cannot help since you did not purchase the tickets directly from the theatre.

Tickets are released only when full payment is received. Refunds and exchanges are given only in the case of event cancellation. Handling fees are not refundable. If you cannot attend a performance, you may give your tickets to family, friends, or co-workers. Tickets can also be accepted as a donation to the Norton Center. In such cases, tickets must be returned no later than one hour prior to the performance to receive a statement for tax-deduction purposes.

Please be assured that the ONLY way to guarantee your Norton Center for the Arts tickets is to purchase them directly through the Norton Center by phone at 1-877-HIT-SHOW or 1-859-236-4692 or online at www.nortoncenter.com.

DONORS MAKE A DIFFERENCE WHy give?

The Norton Center is your center for the arts. Ticket sales go a long way to support the performances that appear on our stages each season, but as with all nonprofit arts organizations, the Norton Center must rely upon the active involvement of our community to lend financial support. Taxdeductible gifts from donors allow the Norton Center to offer a diverse array of live, engaging performances, expand our professional programs for young audiences, and provide workshops, lecture/demonstrations, and residency programs with visiting artists as our service to cultural engagement and learning.

HOW to give?

…as an INdIVIduAl: Start making a difference and receiving benefits right away by becoming a

FRIEND of the Norton Center and joining a giving circle. FRIENDS benefits include exclusive access to artists, recognition in Norton Center materials, an invitation to the Norton Center’s annual Season Kick-Off Celebration and other exclusive events, complimentary valet parking, and much more! Access to these benefits begins at just $250 but no gift is too small (or too large) to make a difference! …as a busINess: Advertise with us! The Norton Center is

grateful to the numerous companies that advertise in the CentreStage program distributed at each performance. We encourage our patrons to take the time to visit the websites of our supporters and to consider them when doing business throughout our community. Sponsor a program or performance! The Norton Center

is well–versed in helping businesses identify targeted sponsorship opportunities with meaningful benefits that address company needs. With branding, promotion, and hospitality opportunities—the possibilities are endless.

Making charitable contributions is an art unto itself—a creative process that adapts to the changing needs and wishes of each donor. To make a gift or to learn more about sponsorship benefits for Norton Center programs and activities, please contact: Mandy Prather Associate Director
