CENTRE COLLEGE’S

NORTON ARTS CeNTeR FOR The

2014-2015

PERFORMING AR TS SEASON

WelcOme

TO A NEW SEASON OF INCREDIBLE PERFORMING ARTS AT

CENTRE COLLEGE

With the 2014-2015 lineup, the Norton Center continues to present top artists from around the globe. From award winners, celebrities, and virtuosic performers to innovators and Broadway’s best, our aim is to ensure that the programmatic variety on our stages is always as strong as the artistic quality. All live performing arts venues have three things in common: an area where people perform, an area where people watch, and the space surrounding the two. Your experience at the Norton Center is different because we make every effort to bring you as close to the stage as possible! How do we do it?

Our theatres are intimate spaces. With only about 1,470 seats in Newlin Hall and 370 seats in Weisiger Theatre, world-class artistry is literally at your fingertips. The acoustics in both theatres (with much thanks to the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation’s incredible architecture) consistently provide clear sound, whether acoustic or amplified, spoken word or music. Newlin Hall’s Orchestra level has only nine rows, making it and much of the Grand Tier balcony feel like front-row seats. With the Weisiger Theatre’s structural design, its eight rows wrap around three quarters of the performance space and audience members are practically on stage with the artists.

Our artists interact with the campus and community. The Norton Center makes every effort to encourage visiting artists to participate in engagement activities such as post-show talk-backs, lecture/demonstrations, workshops and master classes, panel discussions with Centre faculty and community leaders, and miniperformances at venues outside of the Norton Center such as the Boyle County Public Library or McDowell Place Senior Center. From the front row to the last, our hope is that these uniquely Norton Center features result in a stronger and more memorable performance experience. We hope to see you at many of this season’s Norton Center performances!

Straight from the Las Vegas strip and smash hit performances on NBC’s America’s Got Talent, Recycled Percussion is taking the Newlin Hall stage by storm, defining a new genre of music called ‘Junk Rock’ by making catchy beats on bizarre, everyday objects. Formed in 1995 by band leader Justin Spencer, Recycled Percussion combines extreme percussion, engaging humor, and extraordinary athleticism similar to that of STOMP and Blue Man Group. The band has played over 4,000 shows in more than 15 countries, and also done guest appearances on Carson Daly, The Today Show, and the Latin Grammy Awards. After being featured on the front page of USA Today and being voted National Act of the Year a record-breaking six times, the band gained worldwide recognition. The show has been rocking audiences for over two years in Las Vegas, and will embark on its first U.S. tour this fall. Whether they’re playing on buckets, ladders, grinders or sinks, Recycled Percussion’s boundless energy and creativity will blow you away. Audience members will be given instruments and encouraged to

muSic program Instrumental ensembles. The Centre Orchestra performs standard symphonic literature, features student soloists, and combines with the choir to do large choral works. Special ensembles such as Kentucky Music Ensemble, CentreBrass, Centre Percussion Ensemble, and CentreJazz explore the repertoire for these instrumental groups. Student chamber ensembles (string quartets, piano trios, wind ensembles, for example) rehearse under faculty guidance. In addition, students may perform in the Pep Band at athletic events or in the community-based Advocate Brass Band. Choral ensembles. The Centre Singers is the premier mixed singing group, with 24 to 30 singers chosen by audition, and tours both nationally and abroad. Other choral ensembles include the College Choir, which performs major works for choir and orchestra; and Women’s Voices and Men’s Voices, devoted to the rich repertoire for all-female or all-male groups. All performances are free and open to the public.

special thankS to our season SponSorS

The Norton Center is your center for the arts. Ticket sales go a long way to support the performances that appear on our stages each season but, as with all nonprofit arts organizations, the Norton Center must rely upon the active involvement of our community to lend financial support. Tax-deductible gifts from donors allow the Norton Center to offer a diverse array of live, engaging performances, expand our professional programs for young audiences and provide workshops, lecture/demonstrations, and residency programs with visiting artists as our service to cultural engagement and learning.

how

TO DONATE?

…as an INDIVIDUAL: Give a gift for the arts!

Making charitable contributions is an art unto itself—a creative process that adapts to the changing needs and wishes of each individual donor. A financial contribution that is meaningful to you is, likewise, meaningful to us. Whether making a small general gift or underwriting a program, individual giving has great value.

The Norton Center is grateful to the numerous companies that advertise in the CentreStage program distributed at each performance. We encourage our patrons to take the time to visit the websites of our supporters and to consider them when doing business throughout our community.

Sponsor a program or performance! The Norton Center is well versed in helping businesses identify targeted sponsorship opportunities with meaningful benefits that address company needs.
