STUDENT MATINEE SERIES

Dear eDucators Welcome to the 2015-2016 Norton Center Student Matinee Series. This season, we want to provide clear information about our K-12 student resources and how educators can best take advantage of these offerings.

What has been selected for this season’s student matinee programs? Programs this season include a cross-section of performances to reach students of all ages in order to provide meaningful arts experiences. While educators are encouraged to carefully read about each program in this brochure, here’s a snapshot of some of the connections you can make in your classroom:

PARSONS DANCE • Arts and Humanities, Dance, Performing Arts, Theatre, Music

THE BERENSTAIN BEARS LIVE!

IN

FAMILY MATTERS,

THE

MUSICAL • Literature,

Language Arts, Performing Arts, Theatre, Communication, Social Studies, Physical Education

CANTUS • Music, Choir, Performing Arts, Theatre, Communication, Social Studies

ROMEO AND JULIET • Literature, Language Arts, Performing Arts, Theatre, Communication PETER GROS in Mutual of Omaha’s WILD KINGDOM • Science, Communication, Environmental Science

Are there activities the Norton Center can provide to help educators make classroom connections? Our Curriculum Connections provide lesson plans, reviewed by educators, which will help to extend the learning in the classroom before and after each event. Often, there are additional educational resources provided by the artists themselves that will also be made available to educators. The Norton Center Engagement Coordinator can also assist with ideas and planning in conjunction with the matinee programs.

Where can these resources be found? By visiting the NortonCenter.com website, educators can find an Education & Engagement link for Learning Opportunities and K-12 Activities. Located within these pages are the matinee programs, corresponding to State and National Teaching Standards, lesson plans, and other information. The website also provides information, videos and press reviews about artists on individual performance pages under the K-12 Activities tab.

How can educators be kept informed throughout the year? The Norton Center offers a special resource that is free for all educators. Sign up to receive emails and exclusive educator information by filling out the JOIN THE E-CLUB form on our website or by calling the box office. This form is located at NortonCenter.com/about-us/eclub. Thank you for trusting the Norton Center to provide high quality professional programming to engage, entertain and educate our region’s youth while meeting your specific educational needs. We look forward to sharing another season of professional performances for young audiences with you!

Thanks,

CONNECTIONS Because we understand the value of instructional time and can appreciate the difficulty and expense of organizing field trips, we continually strive for our matinee series to be utilized as an educational tool by our schools. As a result, we create Curriculum Connections related to these shows and make them available online at www.nortoncenter.com/education-engagement/k-12-activities/ at the beginning of each season. These state and national standard based lesson plans are streamlined to provide supplemental information and activities that will enhance each of the performances in our series. Developed to stimulate learning in all areas of the curriculum through the arts, the activities involve students in high level thinking skills, accommodate different learning styles, and help draw conclusions across the curriculum.

romeo & Juliet presents

a 60 minute guided tour

Thursday march 3 n 2016 n 10:00am Arguably the most famous of William Shakespeare’s plays, Romeo & Juliet has captivated students, readers and audiences for centuries. The passionate love of Romeo and his Juliet, thwarted by a deep and long-standing hatred of their respective families, is as timely a story today as when it was first written. This 60-minute guided tour by Aquila Theatre is an educational performance meant to guide the student audience through the play’s key scenes. Acted out in full costume, with the full set and props, the performance is a great way to complement state and national standards in literature, drama and communication or as its own stand-alone event. This performance is funded in part by a grant from South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the Kentucky Arts Council.

A bear? A camel? A hawk? An alligator? Which animals will students see live on stage – and perhaps hold or interact with – during this fun and educational experience? In his popular live presentations, Peter Gros, renowned wildlife expert and environmental conservationist, shares with the audience his exciting animal world, travel experiences and timeless tales, bringing with him a number of friendly exotic animals of various sizes, shapes and species. He highlights his many adventures with a mix of video clips and bloopers while introducing students to the wild, all from the comfort of a Newlin Hall seat! A Word about the Animals: The animal ambassadors appearing with Peter are licensed by both state and federal laws and are fully insured. The animals are hand-raised on bottles or have been rescued so that they are completely imprinted on people. When they’re not visiting theaters in fun filled educational presentations they’re visiting schools with students of all ages to help connect children to our natural world. These animal ambassadors associate people with rewards and affection!

A GUIDE TO

theatre etiquette Please keep the following in mind when you come to the theatre and go over these rules with your students:

Please ensure that all cell phones are turned off. We expect all students to behave appropriately without causing any disturbance to others around them. We want to ensure that everyone can enjoy the performance. Anyone causing a disturbance will be asked to leave the theater.

Please arrive at the theater 15-30 minutes before the start of the performance, allowing enough time for trips to the restroom. Latecomers disturb the other students and teachers around them and will be seated during a suitable break in the program at the usher’s discretion.

• • •

Please remain in your seats during the performance – use the restroom before the show. No food or drink is allowed in the theatre at any time. The Norton Center staff members work hard to keep the theatre clean and in good condition for all patrons.

Please do not put your feet on the seats and be sure to keep your personal

belongings stored underneath your own seat during a performance.

• • • •

Please be quiet during the performance, but feel free to laugh, applaud, and show your appreciation for the performer’s hard work on stage when appropriate during the show. Please remain in your seat until the curtain call is over and the house lights have come up. Please observe the rules of common courtesy: act responsibly in the restroom lines and Norton Center lobby, and respect the theatre-going experience of everyone around you. No cameras or recording devices of any kind are permitted. Pictures and recordings are prohibited by union regulations and copyright laws.

Most importantly,

ENJOY THE SHOW! 12
