Martha
Redbone
Martha Redbone is one of today’s most vital voices in American Roots music. A multi award-winning musician, the charismatic songstress is celebrated for her tasty gumbo of roots music embodying the folk and mountain blues sounds of her childhood in the Appalachian hills of Harlan County, Kentucky, mixed with the eclectic grit of her teenage years in pre-gentrified Brooklyn. With her gospel-singing father’s voice and the spirit of her Cherokee/Choctaw mother’s culture, Redbone broadens the boundaries of Americana. Her latest CD, The Garden of Love – Songs of William Blake, produced by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band founder and Grammy® Winner John McEuen is an unexpected

twist — “a brilliant collision of cultures” (New Yorker) features Martha’s magnificent voice, Blake’s immortal words and a masterful cornucopia of roots music (folk, country, Piedmont blues, gospel, bluegrass, soul, and traditional Southeastern Native American). From humble beginnings with residencies at the original Living Room on the Lower East Side and at Joe’s Pub, and nationally at powwows across Indian Country, Redbone has built a passionate fan base with her mesmerizing presence and explosive live shows. Her signature sound will feel right at home in Weisiger Theatre as she makes a return to Kentucky for her Norton Center debut.
the
Westerlies
The Westerlies are a New York-based brass quartet comprised of four childhood friends from Seattle, Washington: Riley Mulherkar and Zubin Hensler on trumpet, and Andy Clausen and Willem de Koch on trombone.
Formed in 2011, the self-described “accidental brass quartet” take their name from the prevailing winds from the West to the East. The Westerlies explore classical, jazz, and roots music influences to create the rarest of hybrids: music that is both “folk-like and composerly, lovely and intellectually rigorous” (NPR Music). Equally at home in concert halls and living rooms, The Westerlies navigate a wide array of venues with the precision of a string quartet, the audacity of a rock band, and the charm of a family sing-along.

the
Comedyof
Errors
Direct from the Blackfriars Playhouse, the American Shakespeare Center (ASC) on Tour elevates Roman comedy to dizzying heights and delivers a rollicking farce in Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors. Two long-separated twins, their two tricky servants (also twins), a jealous wife, and her lovelorn sister romp through this fast-paced comedy. Filled with mistaken identities and slapstick humor, The Comedy of Errors will have audiences laughing from the first confusion to the last. ASC on Tour invites audiences to enjoy shows that are produced as Shakespeare’s company performed them – surrounded by audience members who share the same light with the actors, each of whom play multiple roles. This highly interactive style allows ASC on Tour to forge a sense of community between performers and audience rarely found in theatre today!

America’s premier Latino dance organization for more than 45 years, Ballet Hispánico brings its bold and eclectic brand of contemporary dance to Newlin Hall this season. The program will feature an allLatina choreographed repertoire including: Michelle Manzanales’s “Con Brazos Abiertos,” an exploration of iconic Mexican symbols that Manzanales was reluctant to embrace as a Mexican-American child growing up in Texas; “Sombrerísimo” by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa which makes references to the surrealist world of the Belgian painter René Magritte, famous for his paintings of men in bowler hats; and “3. Catorce Dieciséis” by Tania Pérez-Salas, one of Mexico’s most noted contemporary choreographers explores the circularity of movement through life as embodied by the number Pi.

Gabriel
Royal Oklahoma-born, Brooklyn-based, thirty-something, singer-songwriter and cellist, Gabriel Royal plays his ‘grown up lullabies’ in the subway stations of New York City. That’s where he found his lawyer, his manager, his cello, and where he continues to find a genuine connection with his inspiration: the commuters of New York. Influenced by Stevie Wonder’s groove and Burt Bacharach’s jazzy yet poppy sensitivities, along with other contemporary artists such as John Legend, Hiatus Coyote, Flying Lotus, James Blake, Janelle Monae, and Thundercat, Royal’s trademark sound is all his own. Royal released his self-titled album in 2016 - along with his single and music video for “Say It’s Right,” directed by Blake Farber, who has worked with Beyoncé and other A-list artists. With his new found popularity, Royal is now popping up at prestigious music festivals and performing art centers around the country. Weisiger Theatre Performances are sponsored by

Trey McLaughlin & The Sounds of Zamar have transcended cultural boundaries with their fresh adaptations of contemporary gospel, pop, and musical theater hits — the group’s music is sung all over the world. Thanks to their viral videos and millions of loyal YouTube followers, they are one of the brightest new sounds on the gospel scene today. In Fall 2012, the group released its debut album, Limitless, which featured 14 tracks of ballads and anthems that simultaneously showcased rich harmonies and the awesomeness of the human spirit. P.S. Their version of the Hamilton hit song, “Dear Theodosia,” is pure magic!

Alfredo Rodríguez & Pedrito Martinez DUO Each artist brings a different approach to the collaboration. A protégé of Quincy Jones, who took him under his wing when he defected to the US in 2009, pianist Rodríguez was schooled in the rigorous classical conservatories of Havana. His riveting artistry is informed as much by Bach and Stravinsky as it is by his Afro Cuban and jazz roots.
Grammy®-nominated artists Alfredo Rodríguez and Pedrito Martinez first worked together on Alfredo’s 2012 release The Invasion Parade. Since that initial recording session they have had the rare occasion to perform together as a duo, leaving audiences completely mesmerized by their fearless and virtuosic playing.
Percussionist and vocalist Martinez’s musical training came directly from the streets of the Cayo Hueso neighborhood of Old Havana in which he was raised, and he has subsequently performed with artists such as Sting, Paul Simon, and Wynton Marsalis. Together, these two master musicians take listeners on a unique and exciting journey.

Within the walls of Truvy’s beauty shop, set in the deep Bayou of Louisiana, six strong women’s lives increasingly hinge on the existence of one another. Together, they absorb the passing seasons, just like the weathered wooden structure of the salon “home” that they share. What if, like these six women, we didn’t have to go it alone? What if the comfort we’ve been searching for has always been there, right in our own backyard? At turns both laugh-out-loud funny and deeply touching, the L.A. Theatre Works unique production of Steel Magnolias reveals the strength of the human condition and our shared need for companionship. The play has had multiple New York runs and performances staged around the globe, and is also a popular film starring Sally Field, Dolly Parton, and Julia Roberts. LA Theatre Works last performed at the Norton Center in 2012 with their wellreceived production of The Rivalry.

carrie newcomer & over the rhine Singer-songwriter Carrie Newcomer invites listeners to “pause the perpetual motion” of their lives with her elegantly layered, engaging, and often contemplative songs. Described as a “soaring songstress” by Billboard, Newcomer’s spiritually progressive music is grounded in earthy truths. Newcomer has been dubbed “a poet, storyteller, snake-charmer, good neighbor, friend and lover, minister of the wideeyed gospel of hope and grace” by author Barbara Kingsolver, and was listed as one of “The 50 most influential folk musicians of the past 50 years” by Chicago’s WFMT. Over the Rhine is a band comprised of husband and wife songwriters Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist. Over the last 25 years, the musical couple has quietly and consistently released recordings that have received glowing notices from critics and peers, garnering Over the Rhine invitations to perform with artists as diverse as Bob Dylan, Lucinda Williams, and The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. Paste Magazine wrote: “There can be no adequate labels for music this dense, this conflicted, this emotionally charged. Over the Rhine creates true confessional masterpieces that know neither border nor boundary.” Weisiger Theatre Performances are sponsored by

St. Patrick’s Day just got even better! Credit Galway, Ireland’s We Banjo 3 for finding common ground between old world tradition and authentic Americana by playing their banjo, fiddle, guitar, and mandolin in an innovative fusion of styles that they dub “Celtgrass.” This crossover is beautifully reflected on the group’s newest album Haven, the follow-up album to String Theory, which went to # 1 on Billboard’s World Music Chart in August of 2016, practically an unheard feat for a self-released album. Made up of two sets of siblings — brothers Enda Scahill (tenor banjo, vocals) and Fergal Scahill (fiddle, viola, dobro, percussion, guitar, mandolin, vocals) and brothers Martin Howley (tenor banjo, mandolin, vocals) and David Howley (lead vocals, guitar), We Banjo 3 finds a natural symmetry as well as a cohesive chemistry. The brothers have developed a loyal following in the U.S., Ireland, and other parts of the world, winning over audiences at major music and Irish festivals and prestigious venues with their joyous live show, with Danville next on their list.

Lois Greenfield:
Moving Still In this very contemporary collection, perplexing scenarios slowly unfold, and yet mystery intensifies with what is revealed. Working outside the constraints of choreography, Lois Greenfield photographs dancers in a way that allows them to project a fluid identity for the camera and showcase a different persona in each photo, producing images that represent dreams of our constantly shifting selves. By turns playful, elegant, and profound, these images capture the dancer’s grace and power to bend the body, and with it, time and space, giving us a glimpse of a movement continuum of the dancer’s own design. The laws of logic are replaced by the paradox of inversion — the moving elements solidify, and what appears immobile is in flux.
August — December 2018 20 nortoncenter.com 877-HIT-SHOW
After working as a journalist for The Village Voice, Greenfield decided
not to follow the conventions of traditional dance photography and instead devised an entirely different signature approach that continues to influence young photographers today. Her experimentation resulted in the iconic, gravity-defying black and white images from her acclaimed Breaking Bounds and Airborne collections from the 90’s that remain classics to this day. Greenfield employs no digital manipulation of any kind and manages to capture miraculous moments from real life. The exhibit features dancers from worldrenowned companies such as Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Camille A. Brown, Shen Wei Dance Arts, and Martha Graham Dance Company; and affords a spectator privileged access to the otherwise imperceptible details by allowing them to “enter” the dancer’s space.

If you purchase tickets from an online ticket broker or website, you may be paying a much higher price than necessary. Ticket brokers may make it appear that they have “special access” to the best seats, but all they do is purchase tickets from our box office and resell them to you at a markup. Even when a broker is operating within the law, you still pay much more than you need to, and not one penny of the markup goes to the artist or the theatre. If there is anything wrong with your order purchased from a broker, the Norton Center cannot help since you did not purchase the tickets directly from the theatre. Please be assured that the ONLY way to guarantee your Norton Center for the Arts tickets is to purchase them directly through the Norton Center by phone at 1-877-HIT-SHOW or 1-859-236-4692 or online at www.nortoncenter.com.

WHy give?
The Norton Center is your center for the arts. Ticket sales go a long way to support the performances that appear on our stages each season, but as with all nonprofit arts organizations, the Norton Center must rely upon the active involvement of our community to lend financial support. Tax-deductible gifts from donors allow the Norton Center to offer a diverse array of live, engaging performances, expand our professional programs for young audiences, and provide workshops, lecture/demonstrations, and residency programs with visiting artists as our service to cultural engagement and learning.
HOW to give?
…as an INdIVIduAl: Start making a difference and receiving benefits right away by becoming a FRIEND of the Norton Center and joining a giving circle. FRIENDS benefits include exclusive access to artists, recognition in Norton Center materials, an invitation to the Norton Center’s annual Season KickOff Celebration and other exclusive events, complimentary valet parking, and much more! Access to these benefits begins at just $250 but no gift is too small (or too large) to make a difference! …as a BUSINESS: Advertise with us! The Norton Center is grateful to the numerous companies that advertise in the CentreStage program distributed at each performance. We encourage our patrons to take the time to visit the websites of our supporters and to consider them when doing business throughout our community.
SPONSOR A PROGRAM OR PERFORMANCE!
Making charitable contributions is an art unto itself — a creative process that adapts to the changing needs and wishes of each donor.
The Norton Center is well–versed in helping businesses identify targeted sponsorship opportunities with meaningful benefits that address company needs. With branding, promotion, and hospitality opportunities — the possibilities are endless.
To make a gift or to learn more about sponsorship benefits for Norton Center programs and activities, please contact: Mandy Prather Associate Director
