saturday, october 1 Who will be our next President — Donald Trump? Hillary Clinton? Kim Kardashian? In The Complete History of America (abridged): Election Edition, the Reduced Shakespeare Company will provide the historical context that is guaranteed to confuse any American voter. Just in time for the 2016 Presidential Election, the Reduced Shakespeare Company returns with 600 Years of History in 6000 seconds! The “bad boys of abridgement” go from Christopher Columbus to Neil Armstrong, from George Washington to Barack Obama, yea verily from the Bering Strait to Baghdad, from the New World to the New World Order. It’s a ninety-minute roller coaster ride through the glorious quagmire that is American History.

| 8:00PM | newlin hall | $49 • $37 • $27

And in this Election Edition, the presidential frontrunners (and who knows, maybe the President himself!) may just put in an appearance to answer audience questions: Who really discovered America? How old was John McCain at the beginning of the Civil War? How many Democrats does it take to screw in a light bulb? History is normally written by the winners... now it’s the RSC’s turn.

In the spirit of Shakespeare himself, RSC shows contain some occasional bawdy language and mild innuendo. All children (and parents) are different, so we’ve chosen to rate our shows PG-13: Pretty Good If You’re Thirteen.

AOIFE WILLIE O’DONOVAN WATSON Aoife O’Donovan (pronounced EE-fa) hit the road as the lead singer and principal songwriter/song-finder of Crooked Still, which grew into one of the world’s most acclaimed progressive string groups over the last decade. The versatility and appeal of her voice led to collaborations with everyone from Alison Krauss to Dave Douglas, along with a role as vocalist on the Grammy®-winning Goat Rodeo Sessions alongside Chris Thile and Yo-Yo Ma. Now she makes her Weisiger Theatre debut with her new sophomore solo album, In the Magic Hour–- chock–full of the singer’s honeyed vocals that Rolling Stone calls “gorgeous.”

“Aoife O’Donovan’s singing is almost too gorgeous for its own good.”

Looking like a man from leaner and meaner times, Willie Watson steps on stage with a quiet gravitas. But, when he opens his mouth and lets out that high lonesome vocal, you can hear him loud and clear. As an original member and founder of the band Old Crow Medicine Show, Willie’s skillful and subtle banjo and guitar accompaniments, combined with soaring vocals unadorned for the first time, are a true revelation in Americana music. Mind the wolf, heed the witch, and honor the giant in the sky at this extraordinary musical about the power of wishes and what really happens after they come true. Venture back Into The Woods as the Dodgers (Jersey Boys, Matilda The Musical) team up with Networks (Phantom, War Horse, South Pacific) to present the acclaimed Fiasco Theater production that became New York’s surprise hit of this season. This Tony® Awardwinning musical classic by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine

VENICE BAROQUE

ORCHESTRA Nicola Benedetti violin

There are few pieces of music as instantly recognizable as Antonio Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. And yet, as it is so often heard only in fragments, the complete piece still has the capacity to surprise and delight. Founded in 1997 by Baroque scholar and harpsichordist Andrea Marcon, the Venice Baroque Orchestra is recognized as one of the very finest period instrument ensembles. The Orchestra receives wide critical acclaim for its concert and opera performances throughout North America, Europe, South America, and Asia. This year the group is joined by violin soloist and Scottish rising star Nicola Benedetti, whose highly personal interpretations of Vivaldi’s work have been called “teasingly wistful one minute, electrifying and explosive the next” (The Scotsman).

Program to include: GALUPPI: Concerto a Quattro No. 2 in G Major AVISON: Concerto Grosso No. 8 in E Minor, after D. Scarlatti GEMINIANI: Concerto Grosso for strings in D Minor, “La Follia” VIVALDI: Concerto in D Major for violin, strings and basso continuo, RV 212a, “Per la solennità della S. lingua di S. THE MUSIC

MAKER BLUES REVUE

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE “OUR LIVING PAST” EXHIBIT* With the popular resurgence of Americana, blues, and traditional music, the Music Maker Blues Revue artists serve as musical masters. The Music Maker Relief Foundation, a North Carolinabased non-profit, was founded to preserve the musical traditions of the South by directly supporting the musicians who make it. It started by helping a small group of elderly blues musicians still performing the musical traditions of 19th and early 20th century America. They lived in abject poverty, but when offered help,

they didn’t ask for money, they wanted a gig. This performance shines a light on a collective of these Southern folk musicians depicted in the accompanying photography exhibit displayed in the Norton Center foyer. They’ve busked on the sidewalks of High Point, NC, received standing ovations at Carnegie Hall, travelled from Argentina to Australia, Europe to Guatemala, and across the U.S. The Revue pleases all types of fans, from the “boogiers to the bookworms.”

* This performance is being held in conjunction with the exhibition, Our Living Past, a collection of tintype photographs from Tim Duffy, founder of Music Maker Relief Foundation, in the Norton Center Grand Foyer January through March 2017. See pg. 21 for more information. THIS PROJECT IS SUPPORTED IN PART BY AN AWARD FROM THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS.

VISUAL ART on exhibit in the grand foyer may 2016 -– december 2016 During the winter of 2016, the Norton Center put out a call for submissions of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction for EAT: A Literature + Photography Installation. We sought pieces about eating in all configurations: literal, figurative, experimental, dark, nostalgic, satirical, etc. The Norton Center is displaying the selected writings (and/or a selection from within those pieces), alongside a photographic interpretation of each piece by noted Kentucky photographer, Sarah Jane Sanders, a Lexington-based food and editorial photographer. Sanders earned her bachelor’s degree in fine art with a focus on new media at the University of Kentucky and later received the W.P.P.I Hy Sheanin Memorial Scholarship. She is particularly drawn to the full circle of food as a lens for focusing on culture. From origin, to processing, to the table, food is a universal language that bridges cultural boundaries. The Kentucky Arts Council, the state arts agency, supports EAT: A Literature + Photography Installation with state tax dollars and federal funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.

AT THE NORTON CENTER “Our Living Past” is an exhibit of photographs from Tim Duffy, founder of the the Music Maker Relief Foundation. For 35 years, Duffy has immortalized Southern musical heroes and the world in which they live. The exhibit highlights the question of how poverty, geography, and age have limited the exposure of these artists, causing the widespread idea that the musical traditions they perform have “died out.” These images were made with wet-plate collodion photography and printed with the platinum/palladium process. Duffy’s plates have been collected by the Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture, the Morris Museum of Art, the Southern Folklife Collection at UNC, and also by the New Orleans Museum of Art.

CENTRE COLLEGE Proof

DRAMA PROGRAM The Centre College drama program regularly produces exciting seasons of theatre that are highly regarded by both the community and college audiences. Plays are selected for their importance as dramatic literature, for their challenging nature, and, of course, for their entertainment value. All shows are cast from the student body at–large —with the exception of an occasional guest artist. Tickets may be purchased at the Weisiger Theatre box office the night of a performance.

EDUCATION & ENGAGEMENT

Great performances are often just the beginning of a lifelong connection to the creativity that crosses our stages each season. At the Norton Center, we provide opportunities for our audience to deepen its connection to the arts in the following ways:

PANEL DISCUSSIONS Context and conversation from Centre College faculty, guest artists, and local experts. These popular 3060 minute talks are provided free of charge, when available.

NOTES FROM THE FACULTY Featured articles in CentreStage and on the Norton Center blog from select Centre College faculty serve to add depth and further reading surrounding a topic the artist has presented or the overall artist engagement at the Norton Center.

WORKSHOPS & MASTERCLASSES Workshops and Masterclasses are hosted by featured guest artists, all experts in their field, in order to allow students and the community the chance to gain hands-on experience while perfecting their craft.

PATRON

INFORMATION

TICKETS

BROKERS & SCALPERS

Due to the nature of the performing arts, all dates, programs, and artists are subject to change without notice. The views and opinions expressed by the artists may not necessarily be shared by the Norton Center for the Arts or Centre College.

Tickets to all performances at the Norton Center are available exclusively from the theatre’s own box office and website, http://www.nortoncenter.com. If you purchase tickets from a ticket broker, you may be paying a much higher price than necessary. Ticket brokers may make it appear that they have “special access” to the best seats, but all they do is purchase tickets from our box office and resell them to you at a markup. Even when a broker is operating within the law, you still pay much more than you need to and not one penny of the markup goes to the artist or the theatre. If there is anything wrong with your order purchased from a broker, the Norton Center cannot help since you did not purchase the tickets directly from the theatre.

Tickets are released only when full payment is received. Refunds and exchanges are given only in the case of event cancellation. Handling fees are not refundable. If you cannot attend a performance, you may give your tickets to family, friends, or co-workers. Tickets can also be accepted as a donation to the Norton Center. In such cases, tickets must be returned no later than one hour prior to the performance to receive a statement for tax-deduction purposes.

Please be assured that the ONLY way to guarantee your Norton Center for the Arts tickets is to purchase them directly through the Norton Center by phone at 1-877-HIT-SHOW or 1-859-236-4692 or online at http://www.nortoncenter.com.

DONORS

MAKE A DIFFERENCE

WHY GIVE?

The Norton Center is your center for the arts. Ticket sales go a long way to support the performances that appear on our stages each season, but as with all nonprofit arts organizations, the Norton Center must rely upon the active involvement of our community to lend financial support. Tax-deductible gifts from donors allow the Norton Center to offer a diverse array of live, engaging performances, expand our professional programs for young audiences, and provide workshops, lecture/ demonstrations, and residency programs with visiting artists as our service to cultural engagement and learning.

HOW TO GIVE?

…as an INDIVIDUAL: Start making a difference and receiving benefits right away by becoming

a FRIEND of the Norton Center and joining a giving circle. FRIENDS benefits include exclusive access to artists, recognition in Norton Center materials, an invitation to the Norton Center’s annual Season Kick-Off Celebration and other exclusive events, complimentary valet parking, and much more! Access to these benefits begins at just $100, but no gift is too small (or too large) to make a difference! …as a BUSINESS: Advertise with us! The Norton Center is grateful to the numerous companies

that advertise in the CentreStage program distributed at each performance. We encourage our patrons to take the time to visit the websites of our supporters and to consider them when doing business throughout our community. Sponsor a program or performance! The Norton Center is well–versed in helping

businesses identify targeted sponsorship opportunities with meaningful benefits that address company needs. With branding, promotion, and hospitality opportunities— the possibilities are endless.

Making charitable contributions is an art unto itself—a creative process that adapts to the changing needs and wishes of each individual donor.
