FRIENDS,
.................
Chances are most of us are not originally from the place we currently reside. Many of our ancestors, whether just one generation back or several, are from somewhere else. Some people have explored new destinations so often that they need to affix pins to a travel map to remember where they’ve been. Opportunities for jobs, academics, and even simply a change in cultural or temporal climate displace us, temporarily or permanently, from Point A to a new Point B. Many people also love to travel—overseas or around the corner. We are curious about how others live life and celebrate culture. Centre College takes pride that 85% of its student body studies abroad at least one term. More pins to demark more Points. Daily, it seems that we are always on the go. Point A to a new Point B. And, as much as we love to travel, we always comment about not having enough time. This season’s Norton Center Series helps connect those dots of where we are, where we’ve been, and where we might go in the future. The Norton Center Series introduces us to new cultures, real or imaginary, Heading to planet Zygonia, The Intergalactic Nemesis
while reconnecting us with cultures with which we may be more familiar. If you can find your seat in the theatre, you have arrived at Point A. As the lights dim, you are conveyed to a new Point B, and perhaps a Point C and a Point D. Settle in and enjoy the journey. You may need to fasten your seatbelts as some journeys are bumpier than others. But don’t worry, before you know it, you will be transported back to all the familiar comforts of Point A. However, while you physically never left, culturally, your internal travel map has a new pin to signify a recently experienced journey. And that is a Point taken. Are we there yet?

This sizzling 38-member troupe of dancers, musicians, and singers—the most popular folk dance company in Brazil—performs a mix of choreography from African and South American traditions, including slave dances, the dramatic capoeira (martial arts) and maculele warrior dance, the exhilarating samba

reggae, and the company’s masterpiece, Afixiré (“dance of happiness”). In an electrifying and vibrant display of movement, Balé Folclórico Da Bahia transforms traditional culture into “a spectacular display of color, movement, music and drama” (Chicago Sun-Times). The energy they bring to the stage leaves audiences celebrating in the aisles. Called “exuberant, indefatigable, and virtuosic” by The New York Times, this acclaimed troupe celebrates candomblé, the uniquely Bahian spiritual practices rooted in the Yoruba religion brought to Brazil by West African slaves. With explosive drumming, frenzied dancing, and irrepressible energy, the artists “push themselves to their physical limits…they dance so hard that their spirits show” (Dance Magazine).

Country music superstar Scotty McCreery has had a blindingly rapid rise to stardom since he became American Idol’s youngest male winner at age 17, as well as the show’s first male country winner in 2011. The Garner, NC native quickly emerged as one of country music’s most successful new artists after his debut album topped the Billboard Top 200 and Top Country charts, earning
North Carolina
him a spot in the Guinness World Records book for being the youngest male in history to score a No.1 album on the all-genre chart with a debut release. The hot streak continued as he went on to win New Artist of the Year at both the 2011 American Country Awards and the 2012 Academy of Country Music Awards. He also picked up the USA Weekend Breakthrough Video of the Year for “The Trouble With Girls” at the 2012 CMT Music Awards. McCreery was ranked No. 1 on Billboard’s list of Top New Country Artists in 2011 and also ranked No. 4 on Billboard’s list of “21 Under 21: Music’s Hottest Minors 2012,” for his second consecutive year.

The Infernal Comedy: Confessions of a Serial Killer is based on the real-life story of twice-imprisoned serial killer Jack Unterweger (played by John Malkovich). Mysteriously back from the grave for an autobiographical book tour, Unterweger oozes disconcerting charm, as he narrates his sordid and shocking history. Each

chapter, exploding with dark humor and tempestuous irony, concludes with an aria from Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn, Vivaldi, and more, sung live by stunning sopranos—all too tempting prospects for Unterweger’s bloodlust. Best known for the 1999 film Being John Malkovich, actor John Malkovich has appeared in over 65 movies. For his work on stage and screen, he has been awarded an Obie (True West), and an Emmy (Death of a Salesman), and been nominated for an Academy Award (Places in the Heart).

her own unique contemporary folk sound, with a distinctly African spin to the concept of the female singer-songwriter. Born in the Ivory Coast and raised in Mali, Fatou’s life covers a gamut of contemporary African experience: fighting parental opposition to her artistic ambitions, combatting the cultural prejudice faced by women throughout Africa, and winning success as an actress in film and theater. She finally lives her dream in the medium she was always destined to make her own: music. In addition to her recent, highly acclaimed debut album “Fatou,” she found time to collaborate on Damon Albarn's Africa Express and contribute vocals to albums by AfroCubism and Herbie Hancock’s Grammy® winning Imagine Project. Described as a “quartet with a difference” by the Irish Times, the Dublin Guitar Quartet is a one-of-a-kind classical guitar ensemble that occupies a unique space in the wider chamber music world. Their concerts include a mix of new works and modern classics by internationally acclaimed composers. Since its
Dublin, Ireland
formation at the Dublin Conservatory of Music and Drama, the Quartet has worked to expand the limited repertoire by commissioning new works and adapting modern masterpieces from outside of the guitar repertoire. They were recently awarded an Arts Council of Ireland grant for commissions, the first of which is a new work for electric guitar quartet by New York composer Michael Gordon. They have been successful in bringing new music to unlikely audiences as well, playing as guests of ‘rock’ groups such as The Redneck Manifesto (Dublin) and Final Fantasy (Canada). Audiences can expect an explosive, entertaining, and completely novel concert experience for the Quartet’s Club Weisiger and United States tour debut.

BEYOND THE STAGE: ENGAGEMENT & EDUCATION .......................................... LIFE-LONG LEARNING IN THE ARTS The Norton Center is pursuing more personal engagements with its constituents and presenting artists that surpass typical expectations in an effort to form a long-term trust among the institution, the College, and its audience. MUSIC PROGRAM Instrumental ensembles. The Centre Orchestra performs standard symphonic literature, features student soloists, and combines with the choir to do large choral works. Special ensembles such as Kentucky Music Ensemble, CentreBrass, Centre Percussion Ensemble, and Centre Jazz explore the repertoire for these instrumental groups. Student chamber ensembles (string quartets, piano trios, wind ensembles, for example) rehearse under faculty guidance. In addition, students may perform in the Pep Band at athletic events or in the community-based Advocate Brass Band. Choral ensembles. The Centre Singers is the premier mixed singing group, with 24-48 singers chosen by audition, and tours both nationally and abroad. Other choral ensembles include the College Choir, which performs major works for choir and orchestra; and Women’s Voices and Men’s Voices, devoted to the rich repertoire for single sex groups. We encourage our patrons to take the time to visit the websites of our supporters and to consider them when doing business throughout our community. Sponsor a program or performance! The Norton Center is well versed in helping businesses identify targeted sponsorship opportunities with meaningful benefits that address company needs. With branding, promotional and hospitality opportunities—the possibilities are endless.
For a full list of Norton center sponsors and advertisers, …as an INDIVIDUAL: Give a gift for the arts! Making charitable contributions visit us online. is an art unto itself—a creative process that adapts to the changing needs and wishes of each
individual donor. A financial contribution that is meaningful to you is, likewise, meaningful to us. Whether making a small general gift or underwriting a program, individual giving has great value. *Culture Track 2011 Report
