21 - 25 February Programme

Welcome

On behalf of the Centre for Entrepreneurship, I am delighted to present the programme of events for the University’s sixth annual, public-facing Entrepreneurship Week taking place between Monday 21 and Friday 25 February. This year’s programme features a mixture of in-person and online events that feed into all aspects of teaching, research and future career progression for students, staff and the wider community. Topics such as growth mindset, social enterprise, sales and communication skills, investment and fundraising will be covered as well as inspirational talks including an entrepreneurial masterclass from our very own Prof Alessio Ciulli from the School of Life Sciences. On the Wednesday evening we are hosting this year’s Annual Public Lecture in Entrepreneurship, where we will welcome back one of our former medical students Christopher McCann. Christopher will be sharing his entrepreneurial journey from incepting a business idea from the wards at our Ninewells campus to now, seven years later, seeing his business Current Health, a remote patient monitoring business, being acquired by US retail giant Best Buy in a deal which is thought to be Europe’s second largest digital health exit. On Friday, we have the final of our Venture new business idea competition where students, staff and graduates will be pitching for a prize fund of £41,000, a unique opportunity for you to be introduced to the wide variety of innovative ideas that are being generated at the University.

Tuesday 22

Tuesday 22nd February, 4-5pm. Event open to all. This event can be attended either online or in-person. Attendance in person is only available for University of Dundee students and staff, with University COVID-19 guidelines followed. Prof Alessio Ciulli holds the Personal Chair of Chemical Structural Biology at the School of Life Sciences, University of Dundee. He is also the Director of the newly announced Dundee’s Centre for Targeted Protein Degradation (CeTPD). Prof Ciulli’s laboratory has made important contributions to selective chemical intervention on protein-protein interactions targets and to the development of proteolysis-targeting chimeric molecules (PROTACs) as a viable strategy for targeted protein degradation. Amongst his most significant discoveries are the fragment-based design of ligands for the E3 ligase von Hippel-Lindau (VHL), and their use to design one of the first VHLbased PROTACs: the BET degrader MZ1. Prof Ciulli’s Lab later illuminated fundamental insights into PROTACs’ mechanism of action, solving the first crystal structure of a PROTAC ternary complex. Prof. Ciulli is the scientific founder of Amphista Therapeutics, a company that develops new protein degradation platforms. Before joining Dundee, Prof Ciulli was a group leader at the University of Cambridge, where he previously earned his PhD degree and carried out postdoctoral research. Amongst his honours are the EFMC Prize for Young Medicinal Chemist in Academia, the ICBS young chemical biologist award, the RSC Capps Green Zomaya Award in medicinal computational chemistry, and election as Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. Attendance in person is only available for University of Dundee students and staff, with University COVID-19 guidelines followed. Chris McCann is the CEO and co-founder of Current Health. During his time as a medical school student at the University of Dundee, Chris saw an opportunity to make a broader impact in the healthcare field by using technology to address systemic issues plaguing population health— those primarily being provider resource and talent constraints that have propelled reactive, versus proactive, care delivery models. He founded Current Health in 2015 with co-founder and CTO Stewart Whiting. Their mission was to use AI-enabled remote care management technology to empower healthcare providers to continuously monitor and engage patients outside the hospital. As a result, providers could proactively identify and manage potential patient issues and ensure better care at scale. Current Health has went on to become a Scottish startup success story, recently being acquired by Best Buy Medical. Hear the story of how Christopher incepted his idea at Dundee and in only 7 short years created the second largest digital health exit in Europe.

Sabine Klaus-Carter graduated with a Bachelor in Time Based Arts in 2005 and a Master of Science in Electronic Imaging in 2008 from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design University of Dundee. Following her degree, she initially started in video production and set up her own business Creation Editor in Edinburgh in 2010 focusing on films for corporate companies, charities and also continuing her passion for media dance art. However, in 2016, her world was turned upside down when her 6-months old son Calvin ended in ICU after a life-threatening allergic reaction. It was the start of a journey during which her son and she could only live on 3 food items: chicken, broccoli and coconut. Desperately wanting some food for her child, she invented a free from bread made with coconut. At the same time, she learnt that other people could benefit from the coconut bread, too. Thus, she stopped making films and started baking bread. Calvin’s Free From Foods was born. Sabine has won awards for her video work and her coconut flat bread rolls. She was named Great British Entrepreneur for Food & Drink for Scotland and Northern Ireland in November 2021.
