Revised National Curriculum All of our workshops have been revised to take account of the new national curriculum, with some receiving minor tweaks and others more substantial changes. We will still be able to deliver “old curriculum workshops” if needed but we expect that most schools will want workshops that are bang up-to-date.
WW1 Workshops We are sure that WW1 is a topic being tackled by many schools and we wanted to ensure that we covered the role of science in the war effort. Our initial offer includes two workshops: • Early Flight – Box Kites to Dog Fights explores the rapid technological development of aeroplanes stimulated by WW1. At the start of the war, primitive planes could only be flown in the still air of dawn but by the end of the war, twin engine machines were capable of crossing the Atlantic. Students will have a chance to investigate the problems that had to be solved in order to take the war into the air. Suitability: UKS2 – KS4
• Trench Technology investigates the ways simple science was used to improve soldiers’ ability to see and hear their enemies. Students will create periscopes, range finders and sound mirrors. Suitability: KS2

Maths Gifted and Talented Days We are continuing with our well-established programme of stimulus days for gifted and talented mathematicians in the fortnight after October Half Term (Tues 4 – Fri 7 November for KS3, Mon 10 – Mon 17 November for UKS2). Each school is invited to send a group of four students accompanied by a member of staff with an interest in maths. The Gifted and Talented days use the national curriculum as a springboard to explore maths through hands-on activities. They are a stimulus for students and we hope they give teachers ideas for different ways they could deliver maths back in school.

Don’t take our word for it: “I can honestly say it's the best school trip I've been on in years. The day was superbly organised, with no time wasted and the children engaged all day. My children were captivated by the activities and many are desperate to go back again with their parents. We had a fantastic, good value, day and I would highly recommend Life to any teacher or parent considering a visit." Gillian Noakes, New Silksworth Infant School.

NEW workshop Rosetta: Comet Encounter Autumn Term 2014 is an exciting time for anyone interested in space because for the first time ever we will be landing a probe on a comet. What is even more exciting is that the incredible Rosetta mission is not an American or Russian project but entirely run by the European Space Agency (ESA). Life is proud to offer a workshop based on ESA material which will reinforce students’ understanding of the solar system and comets and help them understand the importance of the Rosetta Project. As you will expect from Life, the workshop involves plenty of practical experiments and a hefty dose of awe and wonder.
