Early Years and Childcare Training Programme for Registered Childcare Providers, Crèches and Children’s Centre Staff

Summer 2012

The Early Years and Childcare Training brochure goes electronic! This Summer 2012 edition of the Early Years and Childcare training brochure is the first one which we will be issuing via email, and not in hard copy print. We hope that you will appreciate that this will make significant savings on the cost of printing, post and distribution, and release funds for other pressing priorities. The good news for you as a setting is that you can choose to print a copy off or cascade it to staff via email. However, if this does cause a particular issue for you please let our Early Years and Childcare Communications team know via email to eycomms@essex.gov.uk

Key The Early Years Foundation Stage is based around four themes, each of which is linked to an important principle: A Unique Child Every child is a competent learner from birth who can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured. Positive Relationships Children learn to be strong and independent from a base of loving and secure relationships with parents and/or a key person.

Enabling Environments The environment plays a key role in supporting and extending children’s development and learning. 1 2 3

Learning and Development Children develop and learn in different ways and at different rates and all areas of learning and development are equally important and interconnected.

Section 1

Introduction Training is a fundamental part of professional development. Ofsted and Essex County Council, as the local authority, have an expectation that staff will access training in order to keep their practice up to date, reflect on their effectiveness and to strive to improve. It is recommended that a minimum of three days’ training for staff is accessed during the course of a year, as recommended in the Early Years Quality Improvement and Support Programme (2008). All the training provided within this brochure is aimed at improving outcomes for children, as defined through Every Child Matters:

 Be Healthy  Stay Safe  Enjoy and Achieve  Make a Positive Contribution  Achieve Economic Wellbeing Training in this brochure will also support the Themes and Principles of the Early Years Foundation Stage, and each course has a key to the Themes it supports.

Booking Your Training Please note that training in this brochure is available to registered childcare providers, children’s centre staff and those on the Voluntary Childcare Register. If you are a manager booking staff onto training please ensure you have fully discussed the aims of the course with them, its relevance to their role within the setting and the expectation that when they are attending the training they will be able to participate in all the activities on the course and fully complete the required evaluation and impact forms.

Training Code of Conduct Prior to Course

Prior to attending an Early Years and Childcare training course, please ensure that you have correctly followed our booking process. Please make sure you have completed the following steps: 1. Identify a suitable course. Print and complete the booking form that has been sent with this training brochure and submit to the address shown, along with full payment by cheque or postal order. Please note that we can only accept a limited number of applicants from one setting per course date. 2. Once you have submitted your completed booking form and payment, we will send you course confirmation/joining instructions four weeks prior to the course date. This will be sent via email so please ensure you supply us with an email address. Please note, we will not process your cheque for payment until we have confirmed attendance at your chosen training course. If a course is full we will inform you via email, however, we will retain your booking form and payment as we aim to put on additional courses where possible. If you have applied for any training course and not received confirmation from us four weeks prior to the course date, please email us at earlyyears.training@essex.gov.uk Delegates who attend a workshop without a confirmation letter may be turned away by the tutor. 3. Before attending a course, and if relevant, please ensure your setting has organised sufficient staff cover as we are not able to refund course fees if cancellations occur due to staff absence/shortages. Please see details of our full cancellation policy overleaf.

On the Day

Please ensure that you arrive on time and sign the course register. If you are going to be late, please contact the venue using the number listed on your confirmation letter so that they can notify the tutor. When attending a course please bring along the following items: ■ Confirmation letter – you may be asked to show this a proof of your course booking ■ Pen/paper – please ensure you bring adequate note-taking materials ■ Lunch/refreshments – we are not able to provide any lunches or food snacks during our training courses, please ensure you bring your own lunch. We will however provide tea/coffee during morning/ afternoon intervals.

After your course

Following your attendance on the training course, please ensure you have completed the following: ■ Course Evaluation – to be completed on the day of the course at the end of the session. Please provide an individual email address to which the Training Impact form will be sent. ■ Training Impact Form – you will receive this four weeks after the course date, please open the email and follow the link to the form. Once you have completed all sections, please press the submit button. You have four weeks to complete this. Each Training Impact Form will remain open for this period weeks after you have received your email invitation. After this four week period has passed the form will close and if it has been completed satisfactorily, you will be sent your course certificate. Delegates who do not complete this form will not receive a course certificate. ■ Course certificates are only awarded to those who attended the full course.

Section 2

Course Charges We have now streamlined the cost of courses as follows: Half day ÂŁ15.00 Full day ÂŁ30.00 (unless otherwise stated) Tea/coffee will be provided, however lunch is not provided so please make your own arrangements. We cannot sanction the quality or content of any training other than that offered through Essex Early Years and Childcare. We wish to make it clear that any settings who choose to obtain other external training will pay the cost themselves.

Accessibility and Special Requirements Please let us know when you book whether you have any special requirements to make your course attendance easier. Many of our venues are fully accessible, and we will do our very best to ensure wheelchair access, provide larger copies of the handouts, or find rooms with induction loops. The more notice we have the more likely we are to be able to meet your needs, so let us know when you book.

Cancellation Policy There is an expectation that, where a member of staff books themselves onto a training course or any other arranged development activity, they will attend. Should you be unable to attend a course on which you are booked, please notify us at least seven days prior to the course date in order to either substitute another colleague in your place or transfer your booking onto an alternative course date. Please note: if you fail to provide at least seven days’ notice, you are only able to substitute another colleague in your place or cancel the booking without receiving a refund. Delegates who fail to attend the workshop/or send a substitute delegate without any prior notice, will not be entitled to transfer their booking. Many of our courses are extremely popular and are oversubscribed. By informing us of any intention not to attend may enable another delegate to attend in your place. If you are genuinely sick or unable to attend due to personal reasons, please notify us as soon as possible so that the cancellation charge can be reviewed. Whilst every effort is made to ensure that the following does not happen, Essex Early Years and Childcare and its Partners reserve the right to cancel any advertised course if minimum numbers are not reached, and where necessary to alter the venue of any advertised course.

Courses with Examinations If you apply for a course which states that it has an examination such as Health and Safety or Food Hygiene courses, please ensure that you bring a suitable form of identification as photo ID is required (e.g. passport or driving licence) when you attend the course. This will enable us to send off your exam and provide certificates from the relevant examination board.
