Light in the City project - Jyväskylä’s thinking on urban lighting to Europe!
Jyväskylä, the Capital of Central Finland, is a forerunner in the field of urban lighting, a city whose example is followed both in Finland and abroad. In addition to pursuing energy efficiency and safety, aesthetics are a key concern: good lighting boosts enjoyment and the quality of life of the city’s inhabitants. The architecture of the world’s northernmost City of Light becomes a truly captivating spectacle during the hours of darkness. The Light in the City is a two-year project under the Europe for Citizens programme aid scheme in which Jyväskylä has three project partners: Hasselt (Belgium), Tartu (Estonia) and Eskilstuna (Sweden). Following Jyväskylä´s vision, the project will encourage the construction of a quality night-time urban environment. In order to achieve the aims of the project lighting branch conferences will be arranged in the partner cities (spring 2014 Tartu, autumn 2014 Eskilstuna).

A warm welcome to Hasselt!

In February 2011, Hasselt implemented a new lighting plan, following which our city engineers gained a lot of experience concerning sustainable illumination and scenic lighting, as well as strategic implementation of light sources. By organizing the “Light in the City” event, we want to share these ideas and experiences on urban lighting. At the same time, we hope to gain knowledge for our future projects by learning about the good practices in the field. For these reasons, the Light in the City event in Hasselt strives to create an atmosphere conducive to the exchange of lighting visions. We do not only hope to inspire attendants by presenting our own lighting plan but - through several interesting workshops, lectures and presentations – engage in lively discussions and debates on lighting. One of the highlights of the event will be our lighting festival, which supports our city’s most popular event ‘The Hasselt Jenever Festival.” Organized in parallel to the festival will be Guerrilla Lighting event, which will challenge ordinary people to get involved in the development of urban lighting.
