El Gabinete Literario de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, desde la temprana fecha de 1844, comienza a ser uno de los focos más activos de la cultura canaria. Desde él, se van generando las distintas vanguardias no sólo en el campo de la plástica, la literatura, la música, sino también del pensamiento social y político, siendo un símbolo del pensamiento ilustrado y humanista de Canarias.

En el año 1985, es declarado Bien de Interés Cultural, con la categoría de Monumento Histórico. Tanto su continente —el propio edificio, con relevantes valores patrimoniales—, como su contenido —importantes colecciones artísticas, bibliográficas y documentales—, representan el testimonio intangible de su recorrido y significado histórico y cultural.

Actualmente, el Gabinete Literario sigue siendo referente de primer orden para la consolidación y el desarrollo de una cultura democrática, plural y tolerante. Un espacio que aglutina a la sociedad civil, impulsando y apoyando iniciativas como el Plan Estratégico de Canarias o la Carta Municipal Ciudadana, junto a PROA2020, y acogiendo a los miembros de ASOCLUB y de otras asociaciones civiles y empresariales de Gran Canaria. Uno de sus retos ha sido la creación del Centro UNESCO Gran Canaria (2008), con el ánimo de promover el intercambio y la conciliación cultural, fomentar la cooperación y el desarrollo, así como la creación de un nuevo marco para la solidaridad, al amparo de los Derechos Humanos, y desde su posicionamiento geográfico, estratégico y cultural. Afianzando esta vocación impulsa, asimismo, la creación del Foro Europeo de Canarias (2010), plataforma de relaciones y cooperación con organizaciones de la sociedad civil en el ámbito europeo. Way back in 1844, the Gabinete Literario de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria started to become one of the most active focuses of Canary Island culture. The different avant-garde movements were generated from here, not only in the fields of plastic arts, literature and music, but also in social and political thought as a symbol of enlightened and humanist thought in the Canary Islands. In 1985, it was listed as an Historic Monument and as such a Site of Cultural Interest. Both the building itself, with important heritage values, and its contents – major art, book and document collections – represent the intangible testimony of its historical and cultural trajectory and significance. The Gabinete Literario remains a first rate benchmark today for consolidating and developing a plural, tolerant and democratic culture. It is a space that brings civil society together by promoting and supporting initiatives such as the Canary Islands Strategy Plan or the Citizen’s Municipal Charter, together with PROA2020, and by welcoming members of ASOCLUB and other civil and business associations of Gran Canaria. One of the challenges it has faced was to create the UNESCO Centre Gran Canaria (2008), with a view to promoting cultural conciliation and exchange, foster co-operation and development and to create a new framework for solidarity based on Human Rights and from its geographic, strategic and cultural positioning. By consolidating this vocation, it also promotes the creation of the Canary Island European Forum (2010), a platform for relations and co-operation with civil society organisations in the European field.
