SAFETY SIGN SYMBOL GUIDE Health and Safety signs can be broken down into the following categories, as specified by British and European standards.

What is BS EN ISO 7010 The BS EN ISO 7010 regulation ensures that all graphical safety symbols are consistent and compliant. It is a design directive and is a list of compliant symbols.

Safe Condition

A green rectangle or square with a symbol or text in white providing information about first aid, escape or other safe conditions.

A blue circle containing a white image denoting that a specific course of action must be taken.

A red circular band with a diagonal bar on a white background. The black symbol behind indicates the prohibited action.

A yellow triangle with a black border and symbol denoting a hazard in the environment.

A red rectangle or square with a symbol or text in white providing information about the location and use of fire fighting equipment.

ROAD TRAFFIC SIGNAGE Road and Traffic signs are commonly erected at the side or above roads to give instructions or provide information to road users. These are generally separated into permanent and temporary categories. All permanent road signs must be manufactured by an audited and registered company by law, and have the appropriate labelling attached to the reverse. As manufacturers we are fully accredited to the relevant standards. The UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed) marking is a new UK product marking that is used for goods being placed on the market in Great Britain (England, Wales and Scotland). It covers most goods which previously required the CE marking. All permanent roads signs manufactured for installation within Great Britain will be supplied with a UKCA Mark, whereas signs destined for the European market will have the CE Mark.

Sometimes referred to as Engineering grade, this has a lower grade of retro-reflectivity and is commonly used on temporary road signage.

This is a high intensity prismatic (HIP) retro-reflective sheet, specifically designed for use on permanent road signs. Engineered to give good reflectivity at all angles critical to the driver, it is more durable with a longer lifespan.

This is the highest grade retro-reflective sheet available, and is specified for permanent signs where the ultimate visibility and legibility is required such as motorway signs. This material is available on request.

3 SIMPLE QUESTIONS TO HELP CHOOSE THE RIGHT SAFETY SIGN 1: CHOOSE THE CORRECT SIGN TYPE Evaluate what message your sign is intended to convey and check this with the Safety Sign Symbol Guide. Your sign should fit in one of the designated categories and will show you the colour and format needed for your sign. For example, “Wear ear protectors” is a mandatory sign as you are stating a safety procedure which must be adhered to, whereas “Danger Fragile roof” is a hazard warning indicating a potentially hazardous situation to be aware of.

2: CHOOSE THE CORRECT MATERIAL

Evaluate where the sign is to be placed when considering what material you need the sign to be manufactured from, with the most common detailed below: SAV (SELF-ADHESIVE VINYL) – For internal and external use. These signs can be adhered to clean, dry and dust free surface and provide an economical option for flat and gently curved surfaces. Suitable for low damage risk areas. PHO / PHS PHOTOLUMINESCENT SIGNS (GLOW IN THE DARK) – Available in rigid board (PHO) or self-adhesive vinyl (PHS). Our photoluminescent signs are manufactured using P.S.P.A. Class B material which greatly exceeds the minimum required specifications in the UK. Once fully charged will glow for over 10 hours. PP (1.2mm POLYPROPYLENE) – For internal and external use. These signs are extremely durable and can be mounted by drilling or gluing onto a flat surface (fixings not included). Suitable for medium damage risk areas. SAPP (1.2mm SELF-ADHESIVE POLYPROPYLENE) – For internal and external use. Using the same durable plastic as PP, these signs come with a self-adhesive backing for quick easy fixing onto a flat, dry surface. The signs can also be drilled for extra security (fixings not included). Suitable for higher damage risk areas. FPP (2.5mm FOAMED POLYPROPYLENE) – A versatile, lightweight rigid PVC foam sheet, durable and with low water absorption making it suitable for indoor and outdoor use.

RECYCLABLE POLYPROPYLENE Alongside the internal measures we have in place to reduce our environmental impact, we have recently started manufacturing signs on 1.2mm rigid polypropylene. This material is fully recyclable and is suitable for both internal and exterior signage. Attributes: Fully recyclable

3: WHAT IS THE CORRECT SIZE FOR YOUR LOCATION?

Signs need to be visible for all users, given the distances that they are typically viewed from. Use the viewing distances guide below to check the suggested viewing distances for the character heights and then select the appropriate size sign to match.

LOCKOUT TAGOUT Lockout is a physical method of isolating equipment to prevent it being re-energised or stop the release of any stored energy. Tagout is a highly visible written warning attached to the locked out device highlighting that the equipment should not be used until the Lockout is removed.

WHY LOCKOUT TAGOUT? Planned Lockout Tagout Procedures are an effective way of reducing the risks involved when maintaining, cleaning or repairing equipment. Now considered a best practice procedure worldwide, correct implementation can reduce downtime and increase productivity. TAGGING SYSTEMS

TAGGING SYSTEMS Tagging systems are a useful way of ensuring those who need to access scaffolding, ladders or other equipment know that it has been inspected and is safe to use and they can act as records to help ensure that the equipment inspection procedures and maintenance are kept up to date.

IDENTIFICATION Following a risk assessment, equipment or devices will need to be identified. In some cases, the equipment must have a unique id number.

SCHEDULING Often, regular inspections need to be carried out, daily, weekly or annually.

INSPECTION After inspection, equipment needs to be marked as having been inspected, along with any relevant information. RECORDING The law, industry regulations or best practice may require employers to keep records of inspections, including what was inspected, by whom and when. These records might need to be stored for months or years.

INFORMING Employers have responsibility to provide information to their employees about safety, including whether equipment has been inspected and is safe to use.

VISIBILITY Along with signs, tags are necessary to make sure that the right information is easily visible to employees.
