The use of ratchet straps and any other form of load-securing equipment is covered under several laws.

The Highway Code (Rule 98), the Road Traffic Act 1988 (Section 40A), and the Road Vehicles (Construction & Use) Regulations 1986 say that goods transported by road must be secured to the vehicle they are carried on or in to make sure the load doesn’t come off the vehicle or make the vehicle unstable. The driver and anyone else who causes or permits the vehicle to be on the road, are all responsible for the safety of the load.

The Health and Safety at Work Act of 1974. This says that employers: ‘Must take reasonably practicable steps to ensure the health and safety of both their own employees and other people who might be harmed if a load shift happens on the road or in the workplace. They must assess the risks of what they do and provide suitable equipment, information, and training so that drivers and loaders can load vehicles safely’.

3. How is the working load limit calculated?

The Working Load Limit is factored by using one-third of the straps breaking strength. For example, 6,000kg breaking strength of force before failure would result in a 2,000kg working load limit. This allows for extra fail safes to be put in to place to keep you and your load safe.

1. Place webbing around the load to be secured and attach hooks to solid anchor points.

2. Feed the free end of the webbing through the ratchet reel and pull tight. (Fig.1).

3. Tighten strap by ratching the handle back and forth until load is safely secured. There should be a minimum of 2 full wraps of webbing around reel when the strap is tight. (Fig.2).

4. To lock the ratchet always leave handle in the closed position.

5. To release, pull back release bar Fig.2 and fully open handle 180° (Fig.3).

There were 4129 incidents involving ratchet straps in 2015 according to the HSA. Incidents such as this can threaten lives of other road users, generate massive and costly delays and incur significant costs in goods that have been damaged. We are still seeing death, injury and long traffic delays through poor loading practices. Loads commonly fall off vehicles in depots and warehouses as well as on the road. Under existing legislation there is a requirement and obligation for those loading the vehicle, and persons responsible for health and safety to ensure vehicles are loaded and secured safely.

To ensure your load is safe its important to inspect the ratchet strap each time before use.

Ratchets regularly used outdoors should be routinely checked for their condition & replaced every 2 years.

Even minor damage can affect the impact of the straps ability to work correctly.

Store in a cool, dark and dry / weatherpoof place when not in use and be aware that rock salt and oil contamination can lead to straps wearing out.

Do not twist, kink or tie knots in the strap.
