COMMON INTERIOR DESIGN MISTAKES: And How to Fix Them

Design errors can be costly and can cause major deadline setbacks. Even minor errors can make a redecorating project fall fl at and potentially be disappointing. That’s why we created this list of common interior design mistakes so you can spot them before they happen.

Thinking Everything Has to Match

Not every piece needs to match or be in the same colour scheme. Mixing colours and styles can add character and vibrance to any room. An easy way to ensure your home is unique is to choose individual pieces rather than matching sets. Adding a distinct pillow or picture is a great way to make things pop and become a focal point in any room. Plus, these individual items can easily be swapped out when you are feeling like a change.

Ignoring the Flow of the Room

Are you tired of bumping into furniture because of a bad layout? A clear flow to your layout can completely transform the atmosphere of any room. First, establish the traffic patterns for each room - start with the point of entry, then map out the easiest path to the point of exit. Remember that too much furniture or pieces can clutter a space and lead to an impractical layout.

Picking the Wrong Wall to Accent

Having an accent wall can create a focal point, show character and make a room appear larger – when done right! If you pick the wrong wall, you could be drawing unwanted attention to eyesores within your home. You want to find a wall that stands out, is unobstructed and balanced. Typically, the best walls to highlight are bedhead and fireplace walls.

Copying the Latest Trend

Like every other trend, home design fads can leave you with unwanted items stuffed in the back of a closet. But we get it, trendy pieces can elevate your home’s decor. We suggest that instead of remodeling your entire house after every latest craze, try starting with smaller accessories that can be switched out - or try experimenting with small, lesser-used spaces. This will save you money and time if the trend falls out of fashion.

Forgetting Your Style

Designing a room that you are not happy with is the worst interior design mistake of all. Remember that you have to live in that space, so make sure you are prioritizing your own design preferences above all else. By selecting pieces you love, you’ll create a space that is unique to you and feels like home.
