coming out of hibernation Spring is a sign of new beginnings and we are excited to welcome so many new additions to Century City’s already great offerings. The new Century Village Shopping Centre provides shoppers with a convenient quick stopand-go for groceries, a bite to eat, skin and hair care, courier and much more. The new La Parada restaurant on the Square offers patrons delicious Spanish-inspired dishes with a South African twist. A host of great new stores are coming to Canal Walk. We are also excited to announce the commissioning of the latest addition to the Century City Art Trail, a mural on the abutment of a canal pedestrian bridge by Knightsbridge residential development. Spring is a great time to venture outdoors and there is no better way to explore Century City than to take a stroll along the scenic pedestrian walkways we have here right on our doorstep. The city is coming out of hibernation as we welcome back many of our regular outdoor and family events and I look forward to seeing you all out there!

our growing city Spar opens its first store in Century City
A
n exciting new shopping destination has been added to Century City, with Spar opening its first store in the node in Rabie Property Group’s new convenience shopping centre, Century Village. For seasoned Spar franchisees, father-and-son team Henry and Jonathan Barnes, this new gourmet store will be their second outlet, after the very successful Bothasig Spar. During the official opening ceremony on 25 July, a cold winter’s morning, Jonathan expressed great pride and enthusiasm in opening their beautiful store. “It’s hard to believe that we’re standing on the spot where only a parking area existed – not even one brick in sight. We are very grateful to every person, of which there are many, who made today possible.” The contemporary design of the store results in a warm and inviting shopping experience, presenting a wide array of freshly prepared meals, fresh fruit and vegetables and an extensive meat selection. Besides filling your trolley with everything on offer, you can enjoy a cup of fresh coffee and indulge in an assortment of sinful sweet things at the temptation bar. “What is being displayed here today is absolutely unbelievable,”
The Spar management team and Rabie Property Group Director, Colin Anderson, cut the ribbon to the new Century Village Spar, a fabulous addition to Century City.
said Ross Bannatyne, New Business Manager at The Spar Group, during his welcome address at the store opening. “I am astonished to see what we
have been able to put together. Our various teams across the firm have done us proud with their exceptional efforts.” Customers were ready to go with their red trolleys as soon as the store’s doors opened, and a steady flow of shoppers resulted in a bumper opening day. The morning was so successful that additional trolleys had to be delivered and products constantly restocked as the opening specials flew off the shelves. “We are very excited about the opening of Century Village,” says Chris Blackshaw, CEO of Century City Property Owners’ Association. “The location, as well as the great combination

our growing city Century City welcomes La Parada
A
dding to the range of delectable restaurants already on offer, Century City welcomes one of the leading small-plate offerings in SA, La Parada. Continuously serving innovative and mouthwatering dishes with a Spanish influence, La Parada offers tapas born from Spanish heritage but curated for the South African palate. With an impressive interior, boasting ornate pressed ceilings, a miscellany of chairs and lampshades and an eclectic selection of Spanish tiles, La Parada specialises in sharing small plates that incorporate a Spanish flair and a great vibe. With many patrons popping in for afternoon drinks and a light bite, rather than a sit-
down dinner – which is, after all, the origin of tapas – the drinks list encourages as much experimentation as the menu. Opening specials include Happy Hour, Mon–Sun, 4–7pm; all day three tapas, sides or dessert for R199, or five tapas for R299; Lunch Burger Special with a side and drink, Mon–Sun, 12–4pm; and for those with a
sweet tooth, free churros with any two main meals ordered. La Parada Century City is at the centre of a thriving business and shopping district and serves as a great meeting and lunch spot. You can find them next to Tiger’s Milk restaurant on the Square, opposite the Century City Conference Centre and Hotel.

our growing city What is happening at Ratanga Junction?
IÂ
t’s hard to miss all the activity that is taking place on the site where Ratanga Junction once entertained a multitude of children and adults alike. In recent months, all the existing structures were demolished to prepare for a new era. Set around a large water body and public park, the new precinct plan for the site includes contemporary residential apartments, a retirement component, a hotel and offices. A hard-edge canal wall on the northern side of the site is currently under construction, which will form the foundation for the water-fronting mixed-use development. Rabie director John Chapman says the legacy of Ratanga Monkey Falls and parts of the Walled City being dismantled and demolished. transform it into a healing and tranquil environment. Chapman said the Ratanga redevelopment will create an important new leisure node for Century City. “It is envisaged that many of the current water-based sports
activities, the weekly Parkrun and other community events will utilise this new scenic public realm, and a pedestrian bridge will link the current Bridgeways precinct area to the Ratanga redevelopment over the Grand Canal.

our growing city Great new flagship and concept stores open at Canal Walk
C
anal Walk Shopping Centre is proving to be the preferred South African location for the flagship and concept stores of some of the world’s leading brands. Canal Walk has been selected to house the largest iStore in Africa. The first and only concept store of its kind on the African continent opened its doors on 10 August. The newly imagined home for all things Apple takes its entire experience to the next level, offering customers whileyou-wait repairs for iPhone and other products. The refreshed iStore Canal Walk is three times bigger than its predecessor and includes a lounge area, product and accessory showcase area, a separate training room, technical support and setup desk. Besides its daily product training, iStore Canal Walk offers an expanded series of informative and inspirational events, training and workshops with an array of industry experts from music, art, illustration, design, video, coding, photography, health and fitness, education and business. In exciting news for the whole family, the first LEGO® Certified Store in Cape Town
will be coming to Canal Walk in September, bringing an experiential playground to kids and adults alike. Soon after this, the famous Smashburger will feature on the menu at Canal Walk when burger joint RocoMamas opens. Added to this, action sports brand Vans® will also open a major concept store at Canal Walk in November, only the third store of its kind in the world and the first for the African continent. The brand’s other top-tier concept stores are in Milan and Dubai. The new Vans® at Canal Walk will include a “custom lab” in which customers will be able
to personalise their purchase. Also set to impress, Poetry will relocate and open a flagship space at the end of August, offering an immersive experience for its customers. Clarks Shoes will help people of all ages to put their best foot forward, and Cape Union Mart has taken the next steps in its exciting journey with Canal Walk, and upscaled and revamped, while Coricraft has also moved to a new, bigger store with a great new look. Beauty and grooming are also getting a boost at Canal Walk, with the recently opened Dermalogica store, the beautifully renovated Edge for
8 Men store, and the soon-to-open Sorbet Man experience. Kids Emporium will also be joining Canal Walk’s line-up, providing a wide variety of parenting solutions for moms and tots. The centre’s dynamic new tenant mix shows a full appreciation and understanding of the nuances and complexities of operating a retail destination in today’s modern era. Canal Walk’s approach to 21st-century retail is reaping rewards for its tenants and its diverse clientele. “Experience will play a central role in how we take the shopping centre forward in an era where it’s easier for many to click and pay. We are finding exciting new ways of working with innovative brands to create the type of experiences and attractions that
will delight our clients for years to come,” says Gavin Wood, CEO of Canal Walk. He adds: “Shopping centres play a central role in how we connect as humans – whether it is to bring the kids to see a show, enjoy a movie with friends, socialise with family or simply to shop. As a catalyst for human connection, Canal Walk continues to innovate
and find great new ways for our customers to enjoy themselves.” Of course, part of the new look and future way of providing for its visitors will include how Canal Walk operates – especially embracing green principles and saving scarce resources. “We strive to give our guests an experience unlike any other, one that is curated especially to their tastes, needs and values. Our impressive and growing fleet of flagship stores amplify the unique experience that is Canal Walk. This, our concept stores and unmatched variety make Canal Walk the first choice for customers who want a thoroughly enjoyable experience,” concludes Wood.

R
otary Family Health Days, a unique public/private partnership programme, is currently in its eighth year of operation. The annual three-day, integrated programme provides free holistic, comprehensive, preventative health programmes for both infectious and noncommunicable diseases. The programme leverages and inspires a massive force of humanitarian-driven volunteers through Rotary clubs in multiple countries in Africa and India. It results from a call to action by Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, the previous Minister of Health, on all sectors of society to respond to the crippling quadruple burden of disease affecting the health of our country. “We have to ensure that coverage of our services for prevention as well as treatment, care and support, together with their quality, improves in every corner of our country. Key will be to improve the involvement
of communities in planning and implementation of solutions.” Enter Rotary International, an organisation that, through community service, seeks to improve the lives of people within our local communities. Right here in Century City, the local Rotary Club of Century City has partnered with the Century City Property Owners Association to bring Rotary Family Health Days to our doorstep. The three-day campaign will take place at the Ratanga Road MyCiTi Public Transport Interchange on 2 and 3 October, and at the Square on 4 October 2019. city life Public art mural addition to Century City Art Trail
T
he Century City Arts Foundation (CCAF) recently sent out a request for proposals for a site-specific original and durable public art mural. Professional artists, art and design schools as well as the general public were invited to submit proposals for this exciting opportunity to provide a largescale work of art to be displayed on the abutment of a canal pedestrian bridge as part of the already established multifaceted programme of outdoor artworks and educational exhibits known as the Century City Art Trail. Located immediately above the canal water, this permanent outdoor installation will be highly visible to the many pedestrians (office workers, shoppers, walkers and joggers) in the area. Eight compelling and suitable proposals were received and considered by the CCAF trustees. After a thorough evaluation, the decision was taken to award the project to award-winning South

The proposed artwork by Chris Auret called “Peace of Mind”
African artist, Chris Auret, for his proposal, labelled “Peace of Mind”, which focuses on the serenity that the allocated space, close to the water, can offer – a space for relaxation, contemplation and peace of mind. The project is set to be completed in November. The Century City Art Trail currently comprises 25 different art exhibits, predominantly outdoors. Some of these exhibits have been commissioned by various corporate citizens of
Century City and executed by community-based and other artists. It also includes a number of scientific and technological exhibits. Pedestrian-level information plaques have been erected to explain each piece. Another large-scale project that has been commissioned by the CCAF is for the creation of a special “Photo Opportunity” on Intaka Island. A large photo frame is being placed on Bird Mountain, allowing visitors to “frame” themselves in an image overlooking Cell 3 water body and Table Mountain. September sees the return of the Century City Natural Goods Market and, with that, the return of the CCAF Art on the Island events. Guests to the market will be treated to a multiple-medium Art by 10:09 in September, a photo competition and exhibition of the wildlife on Intaka Island in October, and in November the return of the Children’s Market.
we are always on the lookout for new additions to our art trail and art events diary. if you are interested in exhibiting, being a part of our art trail or have a great idea for an event, please email tatum on tatum@centurycity.co.za

I
ntaka Island is also undergoing some “spring cleaning”, with a clean-up of the pathways and the vegetation on the Island, the replacement of the window blinds in the Lapa area – a now highly sought-after birthday party and event location – and a revamp of the vertical garden at the Eco-Centre (pictured below). The Eco-Centre building, which was built in 2010 and opened to the public in 2011, has gained popularity year on year, seeing around 35,000 visitors in 2018. It, too, is undergoing a “spring cleaning”, with the kitchen being renovated, the rooftop Aquaponics exhibit receiving two new water and oxygen supply pumps (pictured below right), the outdoor classroom being refreshed, and the building receiving a new coat of paint. In
addition, a large aquarium has been donated to the Eco-Centre and this is being displayed in the cube classroom as an educational exhibit showing the aquatic plants and fish found in our canals. As part of the Century City Wi-Fi rollout, in partnership with Century City Connect, the Eco-Centre will soon have four hours per day of free fibre Wi-Fi available to visitors. Other exciting news for Intaka Island is that the Western Cape Birding Forum is in the process of recognising Intaka Island as a critically important Urban Bird Area and, working with CapeNature and City of Cape Town, we are in the process of upgrading Intaka’s Voluntary Nature Reserve status to Private Nature Reserve.
intaka island is open to visitors 364 days of the year, seven days a week including public holidays. for more information or to plan your visit to the island, visit www.intaka.co.za or call 021 552 6889.
SPRING HAS ARRIVED IN CENTURY CITY
Spring has sprung in Century City and the area has come alive with outdoor activity. Canoeists and stand-up paddlers are back on the water, and the Century City Spring Touch Rugby League has started. Runners are out in full force, both with the Century City Athletic Club, which runs time trials each Tuesday, and the weekly Parkrun every Saturday at 8am on Central Park. The early morning joggers and walkers have emerged from their hibernation and can be seen on the pavements and pedestrian pathways along our canals. It is really a great time to get out and explore our city. On Intaka Island, Century City’s award-winning 16-hectare multipurpose nature reserve, it is no different. The Island is alive with new chicks and hatchlings, the flowers are starting to bloom, and many wonderful birds and other wildlife have been spotted, as you can see on the page to the left.

city life Discover wonderful walks on your doorstep
O
ne of the joys of living in Century City is the easy access to some very scenic walks. There are two wonderful walks around Intaka Island. The first through the man-made portion of Intaka Island is approximately 1km long and has a number of benches on the route where one can rest and enjoy the tranquillity of the environment. You can also sit in one of the bird hides on the route and observe the incredible variety of feathered friends that Intaka is home to. If you are up for a longer walk you can take in the other side of the Island – the ephemeral or seasonal pans that (usually) fill up with water in the wet months but are dry during the summer months. This will add about another kilometre to your walk. Bear in mind there are ablution facilities at the Eco-Centre, which is at the start of the walk, and at the Lapa, which is in the centre of the Island. A fabulous must-do walk is the monthly Full Moon Hike on Intaka Island but be certain to book early as only 40 people a month can be accommodated and it is extremely popular. The walk itself only takes about an hour, but the evening includes a glass of bubbles at the Lapa beforehand, and many folk make an evening of it by bringing along a picnic supper. The knowledgeable guides will point out some of Intaka’s wonders, including the chameleons that emerge in the evening. They
are also pretty clued up on the stars and will point out different constellations to you. The Full Moon Hike costs R45 per person and is well worth it. For those looking for longer walks, one can try the 3km route around the outside of Intaka Island or take the 5km route that the Parkrun runners do every Saturday. Both wind along the canals and are very scenic. There are a number of benches

to rest on these routes as well as restaurants/coffee shops. Collect a map from the Intaka Island Eco-Centre and explore our Art Trail, a series of outdoor artworks commissioned by various corporate citizens of Century City and executed by various community-based and other artists. There is also a lovely, short walk over the Knightsbridge Bridge towards Canal Walk. This is a very scenic route and you will able to spot a number of the Art Trail exhibits – "Steel and Shadow", "The Old Man" and the newly installed bronze horse sculpture, "Equus", by renowned South African artist Janko de Beer near Waters Edge overlooking the canal and Intaka Island. The shorter walk on Intaka Island is wheelchair accessible as are all the other walks along the canals.
