About Us and Our Technology
We are specialists in an era of generalists.
Very few have the detailed technical knowledge to produce precision tackle and most contract their product ranges to large mass manufacturers based in the Far East. Critically – we have access to grades of materials that genuinely make a difference to the action, durability and performance of a rod. Century’s links with prime suppliers of raw materials are long standing and we have a detailed understanding of the materials we use in our products – from high strength to high modulus carbon fibres supported by complex resin systems that carry the load between the fibres. We understand the interaction between these raw materials and how to bring maximum benefit to the angler. Our manufacturing processes are demanded by intelligent anglers, World Champions, leading aerospace companies and Formula 1™ teams.
Page 4
Technology Century has worked at the leading edge of rod design technology and holds the official records for the World’s longest casts. All over 300 yards on our surf rod ranges. This is important because it is only by exploring the very extremes of composite technology that really useful benefits can be incorporated in our mainstream rods. We have learnt both in combination with our tournament work and field testing that there are ways of making rods decidedly better.
One such way is to improve one of the most important stages in the building of a rod blank – the cure process. Traditionally rod blanks are cured in ovens to solidify the resin matrix. However oven curing inevitably leads to air being trapped inside the wall of the rod. This can cause the rod to loose its test curve/ action prematurely and soften after a relatively short period of use. The Century Autoclave Technology process delivers the following advantages over oven cured carbon composites: The air trapped in the wall of an autoclave-cured rod is reabsorbed back into solution in the resin. The science behind this is simply – Henry’s Law. The result is a near void free wall and the rod will retain its original action much longer. The rod will also withstand the rigours of hard fighting fish and long range casts better as a result of an autoclave cure cycle. The composite structure is denser and stronger. The feel of the rod is crisper and inevitably for the same amount of carbon fibre used in an oven-cured rod – it is slimmer. The carbon has been compacted down under enormous pressure during the autoclave cure process. The resin matrix content of the rod can be precisely controlled – to produce the perfect optimum. This reduces weight and improves the performance. You simply couldn’t get a modern leading Formula I team or an aerospace company to truly consider a structural carbon composite unless it had been autoclaved. You might hear folk talk about the latest “aerospace carbon fibre” but that’s only half the story unless it’s properly processed. The benefits of Autoclave Technology are remarkable and to the best of our knowledge unique in carp rods. All this pioneering work has been proven and validated and as our consultants are the most demanding and critical, we know you will enjoy the quantum leap forward in rod technology. Century uses the most modern rod building equipment available and our factory facility in the UK provides life critical structures to other performance industries in motorsport, space and aerospace. We understand the materials we use and how to apply them to sophisticated structures like a modern carp rod. Our pattern cutting machine produces extremely accurate profiles that we integrate into our designs and our AT-T (Anti Twist Technology) resists high torsional loads. We also ensure that carbon fibre alignment is closely controlled and orientated to give optimum performance and this delivers considerable structural benefits in rod action. Century has a constant dialogue with the world’s leading manufacturers of advanced fibres and resin systems. We select and refine the best combinations to enhance the performance of our rods. Page 5
The Masters Range
The C2 is a generational leap in technology that radically closes the gap on the oldest conundrum in carp rod design:
Distance and Playability The Century Command & Control (C2) carp rod is manufactured in the UK using a carbon fibre pattern architecture that utilises several grades and types of fibre – each balanced and honed to generate performance. The patterns are precision cut on a Swiss CAM cutting machine for accuracy and reproducibility. We apply our Autoclave Technology process to cure the reinforced epoxy resin matrix which results in what we call HPR – High Performance Resin.
Page 6
Technical Specifications
There are two primary material component parts to the structure of a fishing rod blank: the carbon fibre and the resin system. The fibre governs the action of the rod and the resin system carries the load between the fibres. Century’s special advanced low density reinforced resin system delivers considerable additional strength to the rod. Testing indicates incorporating this system gives a rod that is stronger and lighter and that will withstand a far higher level of bending and loading compared to a rod built with a conventional resin system. When this system is processed inside an autoclave – a rod curing process which is unique to Century in carp rods, the results are further enhanced. This combination of new resin technology and enhanced curing in an autoclave generates a rod that will resist fatigue and action decay, give substantial improvements in strength and resistance to accidental knocks far more than conventional resin systems. Finally, complete traceability on all raw materials and the manufacturing process is maintained through our strict quality and environmental management systems.

The C2 range features our special anti twist technology – the placement of very fine grades of ultra high strength carbon fibre to assist in accuracy. The C2 is also the first carp rod where we have had the material resources to concentrate extensively on the rod’s Moment of Inertia (MOI):
∞ Sealed in long life, low scratch PTFE finish ∞ Overlap joint
MOI is resistance of a rod to rotational acceleration. The greater the MOI of a carp rod the more force is needed to cast that rod. It can be calculated using the rod’s total length along with each section’s mass, length, and mass centre distance. Using Century’s proprietary algorithms and HPR we have kept MOI numbers to an absolute minimum thus increasing the rod’s potential by efficiently converting imparted energy to distance. We have fitted all C2’s up with a lightweight ALPS reel seat and recommend Fuji K guides. The size 40 Fuji K guide pattern remove the requirement for the traditional size 50 guide configuration. All our testing and that of Fuji show these guides perform superbly – particularly in cross winds. Century and Danny Moeskops have established new fixed spool world distance records on this guide style and pattern.

We are pleased to bring you our new ultra longrange carp rod Century FMA (Force = Mass x Acceleration). The radical new design of this rod has been achieved through close cooperation with Frank Warwick-one of the biggest hitters in carp angling, together with a significant technical transfer from our experience in competitive casting where we hold the World Records for casting 4oz, 5oz and 6oz. The FMA departs from conventional thinking by a quantum leap. We have started from a position that we require a neutral taper in the butt section: the butt is therefore parallel and incredibly just over ½ in diameter at its base. This allows us to position the power bands in exactly the areas that will generate maximum tip speed. The design of the rod is now governed by the materials and is less reliant on a fixed taper, which hitherto had a disproportionate influence on design and performance. This is one of the reasons why all our World Records have been achieved with parallel butts.

We use a complex series of ultra high modulus, high modulus and intermediate modulus carbon patterns cross-linked in the axis of the rod. The hoop strength is increased with the use of 1K-1K carbon twill and special cross wrap carbon fibre interply which we call AT-T. The new action in the tip blends into the butt with a flowing arc when under compression and acts like a pretensioned spring. The rod is incredibly quick in recovery and the virtues of braided line can be used to the maximum. Conventional line is well protected and the revised action really helps prevent hook pulls. Casting distances in excess of 200 yards have been a regular feature of our development programme and the tip has many of playing characteristics of the Century FBS range. A truly remarkable combination fused at birth in the autoclave for action retention and total integrity.

The Century SP design has progressively evolved through casting World Record distances to successfully handling World Record fish: we have now taken this range a stage further with the introduction of several improvements that deliver considerable benefits to the owner. Over the past decade there have been several technical advances in composite fibre and resin matrix technology and the best of these have been incorporated into the SP. The carbon patterns are cut using a CAD CAM machine that holds extremely tight tolerances and this ensures the action and T/C is faithfully reproduced from rod to rod. Additionally SP’s are subject to our Autoclave Technology curing process which significantly reduces test curve decay. New to the latest generation of SP’s is Century’s Anti Twist Technology – ATT – which involves winding very fine carbon fibre prepreg around the internal circumference of the blank which radically assists ring alignment during the cast. We have used this technology to generate the longest casts ever made with a rod at International tournaments. Century – through its sister company Komprex and close working relationship with carbon fibre and UK prepreg suppliers – has access to cutting edge materials technology that can be readily transferred to our ranges. The SP has benefited from advances in low density resins that bind the carbon fibre together and most importantly carry the load between the fibres. We optimise this level of resin matrix both at the impregnation stage and during the autoclave cure process.

The balance and diameter of the SP is improved and with Century’s low scratch PTFE/ Silicone finish – the look is sensational. The Century SP is fitted with the SB20 engraved, part stainless custom reel seat and features woven carbon below the reel seat and 1k-1k above – up to the first ring on the tip. The surface finish is matt and sealed with PTFE/Silicon. All rods are supplied with size 50 ringing configurations. High tensile solid carbon spigot joint. Every so often a rod comes along that represents genuine advances in materials and design technology. It truly delivers benefits and advantages previously not available. It stems from expert angler input and cutting edge manufacturing. The Century Focal System (FS) is such a rod. Century had already established critical development work on FoCal System in UKSF Tournament casting scene. This casting arena is internationally recognised as the toughest and most demanding test of rod design and technology. Rods are hammered and proven: many have tried to succeed but only a few UK manufacturers can claim to belong to the exclusive club of consistent winners. This experience was miniaturised and then optimised in a carp rod. Frank Warwick took the design principle and over several prototypes honed the Century FS carp rod into a highly effective rod with an emphasis on creating a great all rounder but also the best PVA bag and Method rod in the business. It features a complex but rewarding action that is progressive, forgiving and still capable of yielding breathtaking distance. Anglers have reported back significant distance improvements with little or no change in casting technique with conventional rigs and bags. A slim parallel butt with FoCaL compound multi modulus carbon fibre patterns – precision cut on a Swiss CAD CAM machine and rolled on the very latest multi gimballing electric rolling table. Autoclaved for maximum life and resistance to Test Curve decay and incorporating our latest AT-T (Anti Twist Technology) to give stability during the cast and ultimate battle curve.
The Century FS is fitted with our modified Fuji fitting and stainless steel winch and collar – SB20 and the new surface finish utilizing a Class 1 motorsport 1k-1k carbon cloth – is silk matt in appearance – sealed with our UVA resistant silicon/PTFE finish. The Century FS has a discreet custom look with the FoCaL point highlighted at the mid position of the butt in a special black diamond surface print. The guides are Century SiC over wrapped in black sealed in epoxy varnish. The area below the reel seat is 2k-2k carbon twill and we fit a JSR (Japanese shrink rubber) butt grip to generate a comfortable and ergonomic handle.

The ADV 1 carp rod is a well-proven tool with a fine pedigree. The design concepts have been derived from the work we have pursued with Danny Moeskops – a passionate carp angler and the finest caster in the world and Frank Warwick – now recognised as a leading angler from the new generation of legends in the sport. When you have the design input of Danny and Frank – you are directly buying into the experience and skills these two legends have accumulated over decades of angling and casting experience. Danny – a passionate carp angler also happens to hold all the significant world distance casting records and has held these for nearly 15 years. There is nobody walking the planet that has his records, experience or respect: his ability to contribute to a rod’s design has kept him at the top for a generation. Frank Warwick is a very powerful distance caster and master carp angler. His thoughtful feedback and immense experience has helped create very successful rods in the past and has been significant in ADV 1. Frank has written thousands of thoughtful articles, contributed to hundreds of advisory videos and now runs his own very successful bait company.

If you are a specialist – you will almost certainly have come across or heard of the Century NG carp rod. The design was first introduced in late 1990’s when we undertook the original development with Frank Warwick. Since then – the rod has achieved cult status and Frank has spent thousands of hours fishing NG’s and we have feedback from every conceivable scenario likely to be encountered. Over the past decade there have been several technical advances in composite fibre and resin matrix technology and the best of these have been incorporated into the NG. The carbon patterns are cut using a CAD CAM machine that holds extremely tight tolerances and this ensures the action and T/C is faithfully reproduced from rod to rod. Additionally NG’s are subject to our Autoclave Technology curing process which significantly reduces test curve decay. New to the latest generation of NG’s is Century’s Anti Twist Technology – ATT – which involves winding very fine carbon fibre prepreg around the internal circumference of the blank which radically assists ring alignment during the cast. We have used this technology to generate the longest casts ever made with a rod at International tournaments. The 12’ and 13’ NG 3lb SU (Stepped Up) are extremely effective for medium to long range – without the use of shock leaders. The revised action protects the line during the casting cycle to reduce the chance of crack offs, gives good shock absorption with braided line and also gives added control when snag fishing.

The Century FG is made entirely in the UK – under our ISO 9001 Quality and ISO 14001 Environmental management systems. We have carefully selected a low density carbon prepreg system that yields a great battle curve and is blended to give optimum casting performance. These carbon systems work in unison: 1k-1k materials that dominate the tip playing zone work sympathetically with 3k-3k materials in the rod’s power zones. These materials are at the cutting edge of modern composite technology. Our direct manufacturing interface with high performance applications has given us unique insights into using the correct carbon fibres and matrix combination. At the same time our experience at the very highest levels of casting – designing rods for the winner of UKSF and CIPS World Casting Champions for the last ten years – gives the experience necessary to design a competent casting rod. The whole balance of the rod is ergonomic and delivers a perfect combination of cranking power and playability. The rod’s appearance is a very minimalist, matt carbon finish with understated black whippings and a very subtle logo, making the rod “look like a government Stealth project” The whole package just exudes quality.
We have been very mindful of the price point and balanced this target with economic lean manufacturing and placing maximum value in the blank and hardware. We use our silicon based blank surface finish for durability and matching reel seat with carbon and stainless steel trim bands. The butt grip is a composite swell style – covered with durable Japanese shrink rubber. All guides are Century SiC patterns. The blank undergoes our enhanced oven cure process however we have optimized the cure cycle and taping process to keep rod wall inter ply porosity to the very minimum possible -using this system. The very best outside of full autoclave. The development process has been rigorous and well documented. Frank Warwick and Cash Farnon have field tested the many prototypes and fully approved the final models.

The Fat Boy Slim (FBS) is Century’s ultra low diameter rod with a glorious sweeping parabolic curve that will tame and control. The design is incredibly complex to give the profile, action and weight that will appeal to the carp angler who does not need extreme range but wants the response and control element of his fishing totally sorted. The FBS has already seen extensive action and has hundreds of trophy fish to its credit. The over riding reports coming back from anglers is the fishing range of 140 metres on the higher test curve (3.50lb) is more than adequate and the action makes playing – perfect. The lower test curves are ideally suited to smaller venues where casts of 100m are typical. The FBS is capable of controlling the ferocious runs and imparts confidence throughout the battle. We have an account of just such a situation where a struggle with a 40 turned into a battle with something much bigger! We have now evolved the FBS into a more contemporary version to reflect the more demanding international requirements where it is commonly used in southerly latitudes. The new finishes are more resistant to high levels of ultra violet light, scratching and scuffing. The carbon finish below the handle is a woven fabric that we shared with the original Toyota F1 team and above the handle a 1k-1k fabric that we order in conjunction with another leading German car manufacturer that makes the fastest sports car in the world: we maintain a Class 1 finish. Above the first ring on the tip we feature a sealed UD carbon finish.

MK 3 The early Armalites set a standard and trend that were regarded as truly legendary by specialists. The parabolic fighting curve and ease of use enabled us to use the expression “Perfect Players Rod” TM . There are still thousands of Armalites in use world-wide, however we have been frequently approached by devotees who have requested that we capture the sprit of the original but bring the technology bang up to date. Much has progressed in modern composite technology and although the prey species has not evolved dramatically since the originals – tactics and expectations – certainly have moved on. The MK3 brings a fresh look at the principle of addressing the margins and middle distance. For smaller lakes where the conditions dictate a player’s rod the new MK3 fits the bill very well. Using modern rod building techniques including Autoclaving and complex curved carbon fibre patterns – we can deliver an edge to the new MK3, optimising for that little bit more distance capability, resilience and resistance to test curve decay but still retain the action and “retro” look. To remain true to the original design we still utilise spigot joints – accurately fitted on our centreless grinder. The performance – is by any standards acceptable based on the heritage of a “Ten Ton Armalite” – not a reference to its weight but a 2 ¼lb T/C rod that accounted for over 10 tons of carp averaging 30’s, in a single season from St Lawrence – North America!

FINDER
The Century SM is a Spod rod that hits the range you need when using a specialist Century rod like an FMA, FS or SP+. Without the right tool you might well find yourself under casting to the range perimeter available on your main rigs.
The marker and feature finding rod is an important tool to discover the hidden topography of the lake bed: this is particularly true when scoping out new venues. Knowing what the lake bed is made up of – gravel, silt, weed beds, plateaus and ridges determines the correct rig.
As the Spod rod’s main function is to propel and not play – more emphasis and engineering can be placed on the casting side of the design equation. It is therefore possible to gain a degree of economy in the rod’s cost however there is no sacrifice in performance and the dynamics of a demanding cast and rapid retrieve rhythm – needed for effective spodding.
The Century MFF will enhance accurate casting and technique – so features can be understood within just a few casts. The nature of the materials used in the construction of MFF delivers the marker float considerable distances and the action delivers vital sensitivity when the tip of the rod is retrieving the lead evenly and at regularly spaced intervals across the bottom of the lake, simultaneously feeling for vibrations and observing how the rod tip acts. Interpreting the difference between mud, silt, sand or fine gravel, gravel bar or gravel beds all become easier with technique and the advantages built into the design of Century MFF.

So often these types of rods are presented as cut down longer rods with compromise written all over them. A delightfully responsive tip blends into a cushioning mid section and then concludes with controlling power in the lower third – capable of arresting the quarry headlong on escape. We have used a staggered butt – tip configuration to perfect the action. In some respects – “retro” because many years ago even medium distances were adequately managed with 10’ rods. In other respects “advanced” because the S1 Stealth is a purpose built margin rod but versatile enough to cast out to medium distances when the opportunity arises.
Century has designed and built a specialist tool that will dominate a fish and reduce the prospect of a hook pull in this incredibly exciting and exacting activity. The tip engages in a satisfying and protective curve – cushioning the hook. The intricate carbon patterns are CAM cut after being designed by dedicated anglers, to create a truly responsive arc. The upper tip has a slow taper to blend into the rest of the rod’s action and will enable good presentation of delicate baits. The blended action is responsive and avoids a hook pull. T1 Century Stealth incorporates a specially built up composite handle covered in poly rubber and fitted with 5 intermediate guides and size 12 tip guide to avoid line choke.

Landing Nets
Landing Nets The net is critical to successful landing of a specimen and Century has designed a range that has proven to be highly successful over many years.
There is a landing net available to match most of our rod ranges in surface visual appearance. The fundamental design is the same in all versions. Century landing nets are available in net sizes – 42” (1.07m) and 54” (1.37m) with common length shaft of 72” (1.83m) and a put in 24” (60cm) carbon fibre extension. The diameter of the shaft at the main grip point is 0.69” (17.50mm) and at the top of the shaft below the spreader block is 0.48” (12.35mm). The handle is designed to create minimum resistance when underwater and is low diameter. The spreader arms have been designed to give maximum cord tension using a special group of compound tapers. This enables the net to be positioned positively without the net changing in shape or size when pushed under the fish in difficult bank side conditions. ∞ The net mesh is optimised between leads being caught in net and minimum water resistance pulling net through water. The mesh has also been chosen to be as fish friendly as possible. ∞ The spreader block is machined from a solid block of high-grade stainless steel and the carbon arms are located in stainless ferrules that precisely slot into the block. ∞ The shaft is constructed from selected grades of carbon fibres that give a low diameter, stiffness, torque resistance and high tensile strength. ∞ The shaft is built up at the base using composites and covered with a special soft touch handle for good grip. ∞ A 24” (60cm) extension handle easily slots into the butt of the main shaft to give good reach when using 13’ rods or where the prevailing conditions make banking difficult. The extension handle is also important to keep rod geometry proportional and helps avoid placing a very tight radial curve in the tip. ∞ Available with 42” (1.07m) arms and 54” (1.37m) arms. ∞ Supplied in a green custom case with separate pockets for extensions and net.

Stainless Steel
There’s Stainless... and there’s
Steve Neville developed his tool making skills at the Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE), Farnborough, UK, in the mid 1980’s. He served his apprenticeship making aircraft parts and had access to some of the most cutting edge technology available. It’s interesting to note that carbon fibre was invented where Steve worked.
Available in the Century Neville Range:
Steve’s passion for carp angling and experiences on venues like Cutmill, Farnham and Broad Oak, Odiham left him thinking that he could make his own bank sticks, buzzer bars and other components - just as he wanted. Steve soon developed a cult following for his innovative and high quality work and he set up his own company in 1990.
∞ Bank Stick Stabiliser
Over the following years his business grew quietly and by word of mouth. Steve Neville products became synonymous with durability, immaculate design principles and real quality. Century has teamed up with Steve - to progress common interests and carry forward his bankside equipment project. Steve remains in close contact and has personally approved every item in the range. Century combines its resources with Steve’s innovative design approach and continues to bring both the existing ranges as well as new, well researched and tested products to discerning anglers who value their investment and appreciate the finest engineering.
