Cycling Through Havana on a Journey to Trinidad Cubans over 50 have an aversion to bicycles. This is not just because the city streets are bad and adversely affect their ageing legs, or that the city’s public transport is a much better alternative – although local buses are cheap, they can be hot, erratic, and always congested – no, it’s much more than that. To Cuba’s older generation, a bicycle symbolises deprivation, starvation, lack of jobs, and anguish. The Soviet Union’s collapse in the 1990s turned Cuba into a shell, a shadow of itself. And in the twinkling of an eye, electricity, fuel, and water supplies all dried up, affecting, in fact, every area of life and daily living. In the fields, tractors were given up for oxen, cars were replaced by horses and carts, and industries, as well as factories, had to shut down operations. All of this resulted in huge unemployment. Electric fans became a luxury as they were replaced with paper fans, increasing the discomfort and suffering of the people in the heat of the summer. It wasn’t long before famine accompanied these problems, pushing thousands of Cubans to flee the island in makeshift boats. It was the beginning of Castro’s ‘Special Period.’ The embargo placed by the U.S. only made matters worse, making it difficult

for goods to be imported. However, some managed to make it through the ban. For instance, China-manufactured One Million Flying Pigeon bicycles were among the products which slipped through the net and made their way into the country. And being a two-wheeled form of transportation, they provided a means of moving around without any need for petrol. Workshops were launched to support cyclists whose bicycles needed repairs, replacement spare parts, or modifications. Cubans’ guiding and motivational mantra became, ‘make do and mend, patch up and get on with it.’ In this way, Cuba started working once more. Being a communist state, Cuba survived this upheaval because of the determination and strength of Cubans. With time, the gap left by the collapse of the Soviet Union was filled by Venezuela and China, and Trump continued from where Eisenhower, Kennedy, and others left off. However, even though they had conquered this period, its painful memories still lingered in the hearts of Cubans. Anyone who imagines that the period between 1991 and 2000 must be reminiscent of a happy time for Cubans could as well be told to get lost, and that’s putting it mildly.

F

rom hand sanitisers in our pockets to wearing masks all the way throughout the constant and sudden lockdowns, Covid-19 has genuinely transformed the way we travel. Over the last two years, travelling came to a standstill with closed borders and continuous cancellation of flights. However, the start of 2022 has brought a wave of new hope and optimism. No, we are not talking about the complete eradication of Covid-19. Instead, this has now become a “new normal”. Today, as people begin to emerge from restrictions and lockdowns in their respective countries, they are starting to dream again of all their favourite places they wish to visit. We have compiled the CEO Destinations World Travel 100 which is a recommendation of the places and companies we expect to be a traveller’s dream in 2022! This list features new young dynamic companies within the travel sector along with some of the older most toprated companies, who have been catering to tourists for many years. From kids’ favourite Disneyland in Paris and the scenic Turks and Caicos Islands in the Caribbean to the iconic luxury hotel ‘Fontainebleau Miami Beach’, the list covers various destinations across the world. Recently, Islamabad Marriott Hotel has become a go-to accommodation place for tourists as Pakistan has started to become a safe spot for travelling with a plethora of things to offer! Some noteworthy hotels in this list include ‘Six Sense Ninh Van Bay’ – a beautiful property overlooking a beach in Vietnam, an all-inclusive hotel “Moon Palace The Grand” an adults’ favourite in Cancun, and ‘Waldorf Astoria Chengdu Hotel’ in China. Zurich Airport has also been seeing an influx of tourists since the restrictions have started to ease, making it a hotspot for those wanting to visit the natural paradise ‘Switzerland’.

036 /CEO DESTINATIONS MAGAZINE //

So what does the future hold for the travelling industry? By now, we have seen either recovery or stabilisation of travelling activities in many parts of the world since the start of the year, but there are still significant challenges, covid-19 is not entirely eradicated, and with new variants coming in, people are still at risk of catching the virus, vaccinated or not. Hence, the need is to still be extra careful to avoid any infection.

Some of the tips that would help include: •

Follow the health guidelines of the country you are travelling to.

Try to travel in familiar groups, such as with good friends or family members.

Carry all the necessary items with you to keep you away from germs, such as masks and sanitisers.

An extensive range of protocols can now be seen as a way to cover the new normal in airports, hotels, shops, and even restaurants across the world. Sanitisation, cleaning booths, protective gear such as masks, thermal scanners, and reduced touchpoints; all will shape our travelling experience from now on for an indefinite period of time. On the other hand, businesses are exploring new techniques both to bring in customers and to facilitate and promote safe travelling. Even with the vaccination being provided in large measure, these changes are not going to go away anytime soon. Therefore, we as travellers learn to live with this new normal and begin to plan our next vacation. Why not start with one of the CEO Destinations World Travel 100? Let’s start exploring as we bring our lives back on track. Have a nice trip!

The Castle in Love with the Wind of Ravadinovo, Bulgaria, Enchants Visitors of All Ages Visiting the Ravadinovo Castle is like dreaming while awake. Guests call it a fantasy land, a magical place. Located in Bulgaria just minutes from the Black Sea, the castle’s name translates best to The Castle in Love with the Wind. The arresting architectural triumph is a dream come true for both the children and families who visit the castle and for the architect himself.

can tell you plenty about the history of a place, but the truth about the visitor experience of a place often comes out in the Google or Yelp reviews. Visitors shared glowing reviews about the Castle in Love with the Wind. One visitor deemed it “one of the best experiences I have encountered.” Another said the castle is “a mix of a fairytale and architectural craftsmanship.” Still another called it “a magical place created with so much love.” One visitor even said that one could visit and take pictures of every corner of the place and still miss some details. “You just have to see it to believe it,” the reviewer said. Many reviewers shared photos of their experiences, often posing with their children or spouses in stunning, romantic locations. Some called the castle a mustsee. One reviewer nailed the intention of the architect and called the castle “a child’s dream come true.” Each series of user-generated photographs featured the natural beauty surrounding the castle in the gardens as well as images of the elaborate architectural details. From the dramatic spires to the solid towers to the charming turrets, the castle has something for everyone to feast their eyes upon. 056 /CEO DESTINATIONS MAGAZINE //

One of the aspects of the castle that make the place so dreamy is the makeup of the castle’s stone – it contains traces of microdiamonds, which make the castle change color. In the morning sun, the castle glows pink. During the brightest parts of the day, it shines a bright white. And at night, during a full moon, the castle appears to be glowing. No matter which time of day or night you find yourself at the Castle in Love with the Wind, you are sure to notice its beauty in the changing light. Numerous organisations have recognised the Castle in Love with the Wind for its architectural value and cultural contributions. The castle has received numerous international tourism and architecture awards including the A’design Award Italy, the American Architecture Prize, the European Best Destinations award, the Best European Family Attraction, the Best Wedding Place award, and the award for the #1 Bulgarian Tourist Attraction. The castle is also known as a deeply romantic location and is a sought-after location for weddings. The gardens offer lovely locations for photographs and ceremonies. But if you’re interested in booking your wedding, be sure to plan ahead, as the location is quite popular.

Tumpalov’s legacy A statue of Tumpalov greets visitors near the entrance to the Castle in Love with the Wind. The statue wields a large sword and a smile. When asked what he would say when he meets God at the end of his life, or more specifically, when he is asked, “What did you do, sinner, and how did you

The EMBLEM HOTEL PRAGUE

Hannah Adams Creative Director The Emblem Hotel Pregue

Located next to Old Town Square, in the heart of Prague, the emblem prague is a Lifestyle hotel that merges the past, present, and future of the historic city into a home for travelers and a haven for locals. The Emblem changes the idea of you “staying at them” to you “staying with them” by becoming a modern take on the traditional home. With 59 rooms, a lower-level lounge (The M Lounge), a restaurant and bar (George Prime Steak), a spa with a rooftop terrace (The M Spa), and state-of-the-art technology, the hotel and its many ‘living spaces’ are dedicated to creating a community. 058 /CEO DESTINATIONS MAGAZINE //

From the moment a guest books a reservation to the second they leave, it is apparent that we do things differently here at The Emblem. Even before arrival, we are in constant communication with guests (due to our technological collaborations with Bookboost and OAKY), not only offering practical information about our hotel, but also opportunities to enhance their stay with perks and experiences we offer such as Jacuzzi rentals, tours, romantic packages, handwritten notes, restaurant reservations, and much more. And don’t worry… we won’t SPAM your inbox! We’ll be able to get

in touch over SMS, What’sApp, Facebook Messenger, or whatever your preferred channel of communication is. We even formed our own technology company, Mews Systems, to pioneer a stateof-the-art product in order to change the way we interact with guests entirely. Guests also have the opportunity to check-in online before arrival, which saves time and allows a seamless arrival process. After arriving, a guest is shown into our spacious Living Room, offered a beverage, given their key, and can head straight to their room to settle in.

5 Underwater hotels you wont forget in a hurry Gifting yourself some beach retreat and coastal relaxation moments is just about the same thing as taking out time to have fun in the water as well. In this context, the focus is solely on unique hotels that are well-equipped with beautiful underwater sights. So, we have compiled a list of some of the best underwater hotels around the world with the best sights that you can always remember and talk about.

Atlantis The Palm Location: Dubai, UAE Even though it is not the actual Atlantis, this hotel is on a whole new dimension of gorgeousness. It is the closest thing to the well-known fictional island. This place is an ideal dream location for a lot of people. The services you will enjoy here include 24 hours spa access, cabanas that have private pools, as well as a private beach. Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas Location: The Maldives This hotel is quite a beautiful sight to behold. It has a couple of characteristics that make it glamorous and exciting to visit. It dwells on an island known as the Kihavah Huravalhi Island, and around it, you will find azure waters that are well-shaded by palms. On top of it is a cluster of thatched-roof villas, and some of the palms are built over the water. That’s not all. The Anantara Kihavah hotel has a restaurant simply known as Sea, there you will find one of the only underwater wine cellars in the world. You will also find a circular dining space surrounded by thick glass just between one and two metres right underneath the water that depends on the tide. This glass gives you a glimpse of the thriving marine life beyond. The ceiling, which has the shape of an octagon, displays a passage of marine activity above your head. From where you are seated, you can see ancient sea turtles and fish with pinstripe patterns glide by joyously as you go ahead to enjoy your treat of pan-seared Miyazaki Wagyu beef or freshly plated Maldivian lobster. 062 /CEO DESTINATIONS MAGAZINE //

Radisson Blu Location: Berlin, Germany Although this hotel is not an underwater entity, its inclusion to this list is because of its beautiful and captivating aquatic design. Located in Berlin, the Radisson Blu boasts of an Atrium Bar and while you’re inside, all you would want to do is lookup. It is 25 metres high and boasts of the largest cylindrical aquarium in the world. This aquarium houses more than 1,500 tropical fish all inside one million litres of saltwater. Being here gives you the feeling of scuba diving while you enjoy their fine classic champagne number and Toblerone cocktail.

Conrad Maldives Rangali Island Location: The Maldives Also on this list is the Conrad

Into the Indian Ocean which is situated in the middle of the Maldives, you will find jetties stretching for as much as 500 metres. This sight alone is tempting enough to make you spend all of your time moving along these paths repeatedly.

There is also a long glass tunnel that has its furnishing done with woot flooring and farmhousestyle dining tables, made of light parquet wood. You will find whale sharks that have polka-dot patterns just beyond the thick glass panes. While lustrous shoals of fish can be seen darting quickly across. The food is also amazing.

CONVENIENCE, COMFORT AND INNOVATION AT THE

FOUR POINTS BY SHERATON NAIROBI AIRPORT

By Kari Mutu As the world cautiously reopens and resumes travel, I had the chance to stay at the Four Points by Sheraton Nairobi Airport hotel. I have been here before the Covid-19 pandemic so on my most recent visit I was curious to see how they have reinvented their travel services. The hotel is located in the airport, and they provide a free shuttle service. This makes it extremely convenient for early morning and late evening travellers or if you are simply overnighting before the start of your safari the next day. At the reception desk, employees now stand behind clear sneeze guard panels. At first it felt a bit disconcerting communicating to somebody through a glass panel, but the staff are pleasant and helpful so you soon feel at home. A recent technology the hotel has 064 /CEO DESTINATIONS MAGAZINE //

introduced is a mobile app for making reservations and which also allows you to do a contactless express check-in. My traditional check-in was quick and hassle-free, and on the way to my room I was given a detailed brief of the hotel facilities. Only two people are allowed into the elevator at one time which makes you feel safer in this enclosed space. A clean bright look describes the hotel guestrooms which have very comfortable king-size beds. White linens and lots of light from large windows that are covered in sheer drapes create a well-lit atmosphere against the deep brown floors and bed headboard. The amenities counter

4 AMAZING TOURIST PLACES TO

Relive in Mexico We mean it when we say that the phrase “been there, done that” does not apply to Mexico. It’s one of those vacation spots where just one visit isn’t enough. If you’ve previously vacationed in Mexico and want to relive old experiences, let us lure you with these four must-see spots to rediscover.

Holiday in Riviera Maya, Mexico

Coba, Tulum, and Chichen Itza

The Caribbean Sea’s crystal-clear

water body calmly laps white sand as smooth as candy on the Riviera Maya. Whenever there’s a breeze, palm trees wave softly. You would be wrong if you believe paradise couldn’t be much better. So much more is available in this vacation area. Ball courts, observatories, and grey stone of Mayan temples are scattered over the Yucatan peninsula, still slightly hidden in the forest that previously entirely obscured them. 078 /CEO DESTINATIONS MAGAZINE //

are all prominent, but it doesn’t take away from their beauty when

The limestone rock underneath them is studded with un derground caverns referred to as cenotes. Cool down in these secret waters after rappelling into a fascinating underground realm. You can easily find out why this is one of Mexico’s most prominent tourist centres when you factor in fascinating theme parks like Xcaret and Xplor, as well as a collection of world-class hotels.

Go To Los Cabos Los Cabos refers to the unanimous name given to two of Mexico’s most prominent resorts, Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, which are located near the southern point of Baja California. Cabo San Lucas, formerly a small fishing community, is now the principal cruise ship terminal for the region, hosting considerably larger boats. The natural scenery is stunning, despite its recent growth as a tourist destination. The desert joins the sea at this point. The Sierra de la Laguna is recognised by UNESCO for its difficult terrain. Hikers that climb to the summit get to experience breathtaking views of the ocean. The sea is also quite appealing. The stunning wavecut arch at Land’s End and the granite pinnacles of Lover’s Beach remind visitors of the power of nature. Visitors are entertained by humpback whales and whale sharks out at sea, and snorkeling and diving are common activities. Another motivation to visit this spot is to go sport fishing for marlin and tuna. // CEO DESTINATIONS MAGAZINE /

Holiday in Acapulco, Mexico “You’ll be going loco down in Acapulco; the magic down there is so strong” the Four Tops memorably sang. The words are as relevant now as they were over three decades ago when the song first charted. The fact that Acapulco has remained a resort for so long is a testament to how special a location it is, even though it now serves mostly domestic tourists. The international jet set of the 1950s and 1960s, however, was the catalyst for the area’s inevitable growth as a tourism hotspot. The hotels, clubs, cocktail bars, and restaurants that surround this length of the Pacific shoreline provide vitality to the area, especially after dark. But all of this wouldn’t have been possible if it hadn’t been for the breathtaking beaches and high cliffs. The latter is undoubtedly Acapulco’s most well-known attraction. Cliff divers from La Quebrada dive 40 meters into an inlet that is just 7 meters wide and 4 meters deep, following a practice that dates back to the 1930s; it’s important to adhere to accurate timing when diving to avoid injuries. It’s a sight to behold in person.

Nuevo Vallarta Is Worth Visiting You only have to look at Cancun to see that Mexico excels at planned resorts. This is true in Nuevo Vallarta. They share the beautiful Bahia de Banderas, which is located just north of Puerto Vallarta on Mexico’s Pacific coast. In addition to the obligatory wide swaths of sand that tourists adore, Nuevo Vallarta has a marina and numerous golf courses. It’s difficult to leave the luxury resorts that line a five-mile stretch of beach. If you do go, make a point of visiting the Marieta Islands, which are located just beyond the bay. Their prestige as a vital wildlife centre is well-deserved. Over 40 types of flora and fauna survive here as a consequence of tourism’s contribution to environmental protection. During the winter months, migrating humpback whales join dolphins, manta rays, sea turtles, and tropical fish.
