Seasons Greetings from the Editor The holiday season is one of my favorite times of the year. Not only is it the time when you reflect on all you have accomplished throughout the year, it's also a time to prepare for the new year. Families come together to share in moments that will result in beautiful memories. Children enjoy activities full of laughter, new toys and sweet kisses from grandma. For me, the holiday season is not about what gifts I will receive, but what opportunities I will have to bless others. The mothers featured in this holiday issue are giving back by changing their industries one product and service at a time. They have the desire to revolutionize the hair industry, help families stay organized, show women that their post baby bodies may be different, but are still as beautiful as ever and keep us fit during a season when people gain the most weight. Receive fashion tips to help you look your best at any holiday event and decorate your home for the holidays without breaking the bank. From CEOMOM to you, have a great holiday season.

Mom with Impact: The Children's Champ
QUNIANA FUTRELL
O
One in 14 children have at least one parent who is incarcerated in the United States. Studies show that parental incarceration can have a more lasting and negative impact on children than divorce and even the death of a parent. Kids with a parent in prison are more likely to go to prison themselves as opposed to those without an incarcerated parent. Quniana Futrell, the children's champion, is spearheading the effort to reduce these odds and better equip teachers, parents and social workers to prepare children for success. As a child of incarcerated parents, she fights to show kids that you don't have to be a product of your environment. Here's Quniana's story of resilience, courage and humility. Describe Quniana Futrell in 5 words. healer, teacher, resilient, servant, free What is the ECE Firm? What products and services do you provide? The ECE (early childhood education) Firm is my baby. It is the first business I launched about 3 years ago. We started out as a professional development firm for childcare centers and schools. We assisted programs with trainings and on-site coaching based on observational data. We also offer CPR training for the American Heart Association. As of 2015, we have added courses for teachers as it relates to parental incarceration. We go into jails and do courses for moms (soon dads) so they can know how to parent right where they are. We also do seminars in the community so that parents, professionals or providers who live or work with a child that has a parent incarcerated can do so with confidence! Describe the heart behind its development. Since 2012, I have been a national speaker. In 2014, while speaking at the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) Conference, I facilitated a workshop to a room full of teachers who were pouring out their hearts about working with children with incarcerated parents. I could hear their hearts and from that I saw a gap that needed to be filled. I decided to do something about it. I told myself that I would write a book that these teachers could use as a resource and I did so by 2015. Are there other businesses like the ECE Firm? If not, what inspired you to step into un-chartered territory? There are several companies who are trainers and consultants for teachers, but none that I know of who does training for parental incarceration.
Quniana created Parenting Behind Bars or PBB, a 12 week instructional program for correctional institutions to help decrease the recidivism (relapsing into crime) rate. Talk about your training programs for incarcerated parents and teachers. These are unique clients. As an entrepreneur and marketer, how do you connect with prisons, teachers and schools? My training programs for parents and teachers are tailor made specific for the audience. I am intentional to include the statistics but also a plan of action for how they can help these children. I make certain they feel like they have a safe space to ask those hard questions and I ensure they leave more confident. As far as marketing, I make a lot of good and positive connections. I am very strategic in the conversations I have, the company I keep and the events I attend. When I enter a room I am very strategic. I am an extravert/introvert so I am very outgoing with the exception of being around a new crowd. Well in business I have learned closed mouths don’t get fed so I have had to push myself beyond my limits. Being successful in business is all about connecting with the right people and being prepared. I have a mentor who says, “Are you ready for the Yes!” My overall goal is to get my programs around the world! Give us an example of a success story as a result of your programs, seminars and books. How have you witnessed lives or institutions changed from going through your programs? In one of my classes, I had a mom who was broken! She had endured so much hurt and trauma growing up that she had checked out of life. We started the modules building her up again as a woman then as a mom. The most amazing moment was when we started talking about, “The power of forgiveness!” She realized that she had some work to do in that area and that also her mother had not forgiven her. Well, after I had a talk with her mom about her progress we began to talk about forgiveness and she said, “I can’t forgive her because I don’t want her to think I approve her behavior!” Well the amazing thing about forgiveness is that it is not a pass to do what you want, but it does release the pressure off of you. After an hour of talking to the mom and then returning to the jail working
with her daughter, by the end of the course she was allowed to come back and live with her mom, her mother visited her more and she even wrote her a note saying, “I forgive you!” What advice would you give to a mom who wants to start her own business or grow in her career? Just do it. I say that, because as women we take on so much. As moms, we put everyone in front of us. We often come last. We can’t serve from an empty cup. The roadblocks are going to come. The frustrations are going to come. Stay true to your core. It can be done. I am proof that anything is possible as long as you believe it can happen. Congratulations on the release of your book, Our Moms. What advice would you give to a mompreneur who is looking to write and publish her own book? If I can write a book anyone can write a book. Start writing. A lot of times we want to do it and hope to do it. It’s very few of us who take action to get it done. Just start typing. I told myself at the end of the last conference I was going to write a book. I literally sat down one day and started and told myself it wasn’t it. I went back to the drawing table and started over. I rewrote it. I had to do my research. I was tired of looking at the same black boy and black girl with a parent incarcerated. Once you get started, it will start flowing. Take advantage of social media. There’s Instagram and Periscope. I found 2 women who were self publishers and billionaires. They do a monthly conference call. They will literally answer all of your questions. They tell you how to start marketing and what sites to visit to self-publish. Tell us more about your partnership with Sesame Street. In 2012, when I did an interest forum, a young lady who worked for Sesame Street sat in on my class. She took notes and stayed in touch with me. They developed a

packet of information, DVD’s, books, etc for children with incarcerated parents. Because of the relationship I have with them, I am able to directly contact the office for my needs and forward their resources to the community at no charge. How has your role as a mom prepared you to be an entrepreneur? As a mother, we have to multitask like it’s nobody’s business. As an entrepreneur you have to do the same thing. We have to learn when to say no as a mom. You have to have patience with your children and learn to have patience with yourself. Things won’t happen as you think they should. I make sure that I invest in my family. Overall, l I know I wouldn’t be as successful as I am in this entrepreneurial role if I wasn’t as successful as a mom. Where do you see the ECE Firm in 5 years? I see us at the top. I see us soaring. I see us making more strategic moves, making national and international connections. I see us being recognized as a quality brand who is true to their motto. If you can change the family, you can change the world. No one reaches success alone. Who is on your dream team? What roles do they play in your life and business? God is my everything. I have no vision without Him. Right under that comes my wonderful husband. He tells me when to rest and when to take off my cape. He loves me and supports me. Without that, the dream wouldn't happen.
My children are very understanding. They brag about me . I have an incredible assistant who is teaching me how to delegate and ask for help. I have my godparents in my corner. My godmother picks up the slack with my children when I am traveling for work. I have a 14, 10 and 7 year old. Lastly, I would be remiss if I didn’t include my spiritual leaders. They play a HUGE role in my success! It is their words of faith and the prayers of my church family that push me to be successful in business with integrity! What are your family's favorite holiday traditions? My husband is a Charlie Brown fanatic so for the holidays we are Charlie Browned out from cups to music to the DVD's. My husband and I are dedicated to changing the story for our children. We have the music playing and the hot cocoa and the cookies. The holidays are something we look forward to every year. We love putting up the tree, playing games and staying up at night. We are very intentional about making memories during the holidays for them that we could have only dreamed when we were children.

Lavada Dale
Trendsetting Mom
Adding Luxury to Hair Care with Haircredible Imagine being diagnosed with alopecia and lacking the money needed to pay for treatments. This was Lavada Dale, founder of Haircredible, a few years ago. Instead of standing idly by while her hair continued to fall out, Lavada took matters into her own hands and developed a hair care line that caters to women with fine and thinning hair. Since then, she has seen significant changes in her own hair, as well as her customers'. CEOMOM interviewed this dynamic mother of 3, with twins on the way, to learn how she is working to build a complete brand which includes books, a diverse hair care line and even her own water. Lavada describes herself as ambitious, loving, caring, and the best mother ever. We love her confidence.
Tell us more about your motivation to start Haircredible. I was going through my own problem with alopecia. I had never heard of alopecia. The doctor gave me steroid treatments. I didn’t have money or insurance so I couldn't afford the number of injections I needed to grow my hair. There was no hair care line that would meet my hair care needs so I started my own. If it seems impossible, I will see if I can make it possible. I played with different oils to see which ones stimulated my hair growth. I made sure I included products that would grow my hair. I would go to the beauty supply store and study their ingredients. I pretty much researched all of the ingredients to determine what worked and incorporated it into my line. Using others’ products left me unbalanced. Now I can wash my hair and it is still moisturized. What separates Haircredible from other natural hair care lines? There are so many lines that have organic oils and ingredients. Haircredible stands out, because I created it to be a sophisticated and high end luxury brand. Behind my ingredients is a story of pain, sacrifices and struggle. Haircredible stands for the empowered woman and the super woman. That’s how I got the name, Haircredible. It’s from a single struggling mother who couldn’t find what she wanted in any products so I created my own. There’s a lot of care in each bottle. Congratulations on the release of your books, The War Between My Mind, My Soul, My God and The Tears of an Inmate's Wife. What advice would you give to a mom who wants to write and publish her own book? Self publish. People always ask me what publisher I use. I tell them to publish their own books. You get more for your buck. If you are going to be the one promoting, why would you give someone else a cut. Describe some of the challenges of being a single mom and an entrepreneur? How have you overcome those challenges? Time away from the kids is the biggest challenge. I missed a lot being a single mom and an entrepreneur. You miss the beginning of your kids’ lives, because you are working so hard. You take a risk on how your relationship is going to be in the middle of it. My mom was a very big help. I work all night and try to juggle my job. I leave early so I can pick them up or get them ready in the morning. All kids want is their mom. I make sure I am there to take them to school if I am not going to see them at night.
Akbar Photography
Where do you see Haircredible in 5 years? I see it growing into a beauty empire. I don’t want to stop with one product. I want more beauty products such as vitamins and our own water. I haven’t seen any hair care lines with their own water. No one reaches success alone. Who is on your dream team? What roles do they play in your life and business? My mom, my father, my sister, my brother and my fiancé are my support system. They help a lot. My fiance cooks, cleans and gets the kids from school. My mom bought a house near me so she could help with the kids. My entire family works together to help me pursue my dreams. I am truly blessed for all of their support.
Holiday Cheer What are your family's favorite holiday traditions? We always decorate the tree together. We also carve pumpkins together and put lights in them. What is your favorite holiday hair style and tips? For the holidays, I like to straighten my hair and show my length. For the holidays, I believe you should, “Get your Beyonce on.” To learn more about Lavada Dale and Haircredible, visit http://www.haircredible.com.

Meet Monica
At Home with
JUDGE MONICA PURDY Surrounded by exquisite art and impeccable style, CEOMOM had the privilege of visiting with Judge Monica Purdy in her gorgeous home. As she prepared for a family road trip to a college football game, we were able to see why this beautiful and humble wife and mother of 2 is a leader in the field of law. As an appointed judge in Dallas county, Monica understands the value of an upstanding reputation, and what it takes to change the world, one community at a time. Describe Judge Monica Purdy in 5 words. family focused, ambitious, outgoing, determined and fun What motivated you to choose a career in law? My godfather, Warren Dawson, is a lawyer and he introduced me to the world of law at a very young age. He would take me to his office as he prepared for cases and then to the courthouse and one thing I always noticed was the level of respect he received no matter where he went. Additionally, it became clear that this profession lacked women which starting me thinking this is the profession for me. I wanted to break the stereotype and more importantly, be in a position to speak for those who could not effectively speak for themselves. What type of cases do you see as a judge? I am an associate state civil court judge. Here in Dallas we have 13 district civil courts and 2 associate judges who support those courts which are of general jurisdiction. We don’t hear family law, juvenile, criminal or probate matters. Everything else, we handle. We handle breach of contract claims, medical malpractice, wrongful termination, wrongful death, complex commercial law disputes and personal injury to name just a few. For those who are aspiring to follow in your footsteps, describe the process to become an associate judge. From a tangible standpoint, you have to first complete your education including law school and pass the bar within the state you plan to practice the profession. You will need at least 10 years practicing law with a heavy background in civil litigation. My position is appointed and not elected which means I went through a series of interviews with the elected district judges and members of the local bar association of Dallas. It was a long but rewarding process as it started with hundreds of candidates and took over three months to complete. From an intangible standpoint and just as important as your education, networking is vital if you want to even be considered. People have to know who you are, the type of work that you do and about your reputation.

My motivation for entering the field of law is being able to speak for people who can’t effectively speak for themselves."
"
You won’t know all 13 judges, but if they don’t know you, they need to be able to ask someone about you. Your reputation is something you have to guard with all seriousness because you never know when someone is going to inquire about your professional and personal ability. What does a typical day look like for you? Typically, I am up by 5:30am getting the kids up to start their day, making breakfast, dropping them off at school which gets me to the courthouse by 8:00am. I have a motion docket every day which is always full as I support seven of the 13 elected district judges and no two days are alike. I hear various types of motions that are primarily discovery matters which are parties who have lawsuits pending in Dallas County. They are at the beginning stage of the lawsuit where both parties are exchanging information related to the case. I determine what type of information will come in and what type of information will stay out. I also handle a lot of the emergency motions for the courts I support. One judge may be in trial so I will handle matters from their court such as temporary restraining orders. I spend the afternoons preparing for my motion docket the following day.
What advice would you give to a woman who wants to pursue a career in law? I hear people deter young ladies from becoming lawyers because they believe the world doesn’t need more lawyers. I don’t believe there are too many lawyers and there is always room for more good lawyers. I can’t stress this enough, make sure you are competent in your craft. Build your professional brand through your great work and passion for the law and do not be afraid to take on challenges outside your comfort zone as it only means you are growing professionally. Lastly, have fun in the profession as you are in the best profession on earth! How has your role as a mom impacted your role as a judge? My role as a mom has impacted my role as a judge a great deal. With two active kids, multitasking and patience are must have attributes and both are mission critical as a judge. Lawyers, like children, want to be heard and they want to be understood so I do spend a lot of time sitting and listening which happens constantly as a mom. Lastly, and maybe most importantly, being detail oriented as a mom is another must have skill as a judge…details matter which is why I spend ample time everyday reviewing my cases and preparing for the next day so I have the knowledge of all the details.
In light of the recent police killings of unarmed black men and the consequential protests, what are some ways everyday citizens can encourage change and impact justice? Everyday citizens can encourage change and impact by getting involved and having open and honest conversations with elected officials. Get involved in your local level politics such as your city and school board. Turn your anger to action to be a part of the solution. Figure out what your niche is and get involved but please do not stand by idle as this will not move us forward. How are you preparing your children to make a difference in the community? We make sure that they are keenly aware that they are growing up in a very different environment than their mom and dad did. We believe they should understand the importance of God, family, education and giving back. We model that by always going to church and volunteering. We take them with us to do community projects such as feeding the homeless and voter registration drives. We want them to see us helping out. We also expose our children to the world through travel and express that we are living in a global economy and the world is bigger than just the U.S. What are your family's favorite holiday traditions? We attend the annual Children’s Holiday Parade in downtown Dallas. It is always the first Saturday in December and we stay overnight in downtown with many close friends. The kids have an absolute blast and while many are now teenagers, this has remained a family tradition for 10 years. The parade weekend typically marks the “Purdy Holiday Decoration” night where we decorate our tree with special ornaments that we have collected from our travels over the years, drink hot chocolate and listen to holiday music…typically Luther and Whispers. We love the holidays, especially Christmas.

A CONVERSATION WITH ERYN SHIELDS HEART OF STYLE SEW ME When my body changed after giving birth to my daughter, I started to put more effort into getting dressed and looking presentable. I couldn't just throw on any old thing and feel cute anymore. Because I had learned how to sew, I was no longer bound by the sizes of store bought clothes. I no longer had to try to squeeze my way into clothes that didn't flatter my new body. I never wanted to be a mom who gave up on herself. I do enjoy looking presentable when I walk out of my house. But, I definitely don't believe it requires spending a huge amount of time getting dressed. It's just impossible with a 2 year old demanding my attention while trying to draw on eyeliner! My personal style is easy, comfortable, and effortless. If it doesn't fit into this, I don't buy it, make it, or wear it. My passion for my business is to help women take control of their personal style by sewing their own clothing. I know what it did for me and I want to share that with other women. You have the power and control to create pieces you love that fit you perfectly. You never have to feel uncomfortable, frustrated, or simply just not sexy because sewing gives you that control back. Want skinny jeans without a muffin top? Make them! It's my passion to give women the ability to be creative, get some much-needed me time, and create a wardrobe they'll love. Many of my readers have even started sewing businesses from my teachings which makes me feel amazing that I was apart of their journey!
Describe your process for designing various looks. My phone is full of screen shots of things I see online. My Pinterest boards are crazy. I will keep a log of something I would like to sew. I literally don’t know what I am going to make until I start making it. I am inspired by my fabric. I always look at my fabric stash and decide what I want to make with it. With a more elaborate fabric I will make something simple. With a solid color I will create something grand. What tips do you have for beginner sewers? Enjoy the process. It can be frustrating at first trying to learn by yourself. It is not always about completing the garment or the piece. It‘s about cancelling out the world and focusing on creating something for you. If you get frustrated take a break and have a glass of wine. You can get back to it later. What tips do you have for moms who want to start their own sewing business? Start small. Always make sure that you have time for your family. That is number 1. Don’t overwhelm yourself by comparing yourself to other people online. Start with what people are asking you for. Give them what they want. Scale slowly from there. I did the exact opposite so don’t do what I did. There is something unique about you. You won’t ever find that gift if you continue to compare yourself to others. My gift isn’t sewing, but teaching. Some of the best feedback I’ve received from YouTube are, “Thank you for skipping the things I don’t need. Thank you for keeping it simple.”
What products and services do Style Sew Me offer? I sell online digital patterns. You select a pattern you like and then I download a PDF and assemble it according to the instructions. Every pattern has a video if you need further instructions. Style Sew Me is the only indie pattern company that includes video sew alongs. When I decided not to sew for others anymore I took the next 2 patterns that I would have used for someone else and created my first 2 digital patterns. I also started selling the excess fabric I had from my store. I offer sewing classes as well. I film everything that I will talk about. I upload the video to a secure site. When a customer purchases the class she gets the PDF with all of the information such as needed supplies, etc. Customers get lifetime access. All of my services and products are offered through the Style Sew Me blog. That includes affiliate programs, videos and fabrics. How does a woman identify or define her individual style? What advice would you give to a mom who is struggling to find her own style? If you wear it, make sure you feel good in it. You can start by being inspired by someone and modify it to fit your personal taste. Be open to change. Don’t stick to a specific trend. When I shop, if I don’t love it, I don’t buy it. Currently, my closet is 20% DIY. I purge more stuff as I get over it and I make stuff to replenish it. What are some of the biggest mistakes moms make when it comes to fashion? Our bodies change after we have babies. I think some of the biggest mistakes we make is we don’t dress for the body we have now, but the one we used to have pre-baby. We try to squeeze ourselves into a smaller size when it is okay to wear the size 12. Find the clothes that fit your body and your lifestyle.

CHIC STATIONARY & MORE
BRIDGETTE REED Getting Organized with Olivia Sophia, Inc.
Inspired by her love for God and family, Bridgette Reed has created a company that not only helps women to organize their lives, but to seek peace through meditation and journal writing. This wife, mother, entrepreneur, business coach and author is proof that a woman's purpose does not have to be limited to one role. Bridgette lives in Dallas with her husband Jermel and their baby girl, Olivia Sophia. CEOMOM enjoyed speaking with Bridgette about her company, Olivia Sophia, Inc and its mission to inspire. What is Olivia Sophia, Inc? What products do you offer? We are a stationery and paper product company. We sell journals, pens, planners, notebooks, stationery, thank you cards, pocket notes, and magnetic notes. We want to inspire others to give the love that we feel for our daughter. We choose to express our love through journals and books. What is the inspiration behind Olivia Sophia, Inc? It’s a brand that was birthed from my daughter’s life. She was a miracle to us during a very difficult time in our lives when we didn’t think we could conceive. We decided that it was too much to bear.

We dedicated ourselves to fasting and praying and decided to let go and let God. We found out that we were pregnant with our beautiful daughter Olivia Sophia 2 months later. It was a complete surprise. Her life has been such a joy. She gives me super fuel in my inspiration tank. From her, I have become this completely inspired person. All of our products are inspiration based. We wanted people to not only have a notebook, but to know that anything is possible and that God is able. How do your stationery products help moms with day to day activities? I inspire moms to get organized and to destress through meditation and journal writing. As moms, we tend to think of others a lot, our communities and our families. It’s that “me time” that helps us to refresh and renew to be a whole person so we can give back to all of the people we serve. If we are empty, we can’t give the best of who we are. We also inspire moms through our weekly emails. Customers can sign up and get a weekly email from us. It’s me sharing my heart. I like to connect with my customers on a personal level. I will share personal things and how I overcome. There’s a theme of my emails, progress not perfection. You don’t have to be perfect at mommying. Put one step in front of the other and keep going. You will get to your destination. What separates Olivia Sophia, Inc from other stationery companies? Number one, we are affordable. A lot of stationery products are expensive. Our planners are $39.99. Most planners on our level are $50 or more. We stick to a theme of chic inspiration. It is very girlie and fun, but inspiring to women. We have things like “Never Lose Your Sparkle.” We try to inspire women with our products. What are your family’s holiday traditions? We love to go see Christmas lights and listen to Christmas music. Our family has an annual Christmas Eve party. We do a pajama box. You buy really fun pajamas and box it with cocoa and popcorn and give it to the person a week before Christmas. We decorate ornaments. We go to Christmas plays. We take family photos.

What are your top tips for helping moms stay organized during the holidays? 1. Use your planner to record your weekly events. Determine the events you will attend and those you plan to decline. You can’t go to everything. Don’t overwhelm your schedule. Time is a resource we don’t get back. We have to be great stewards of our time. Be ready to say no. 2. Make sure that you are ready for your shopping. Set your budget. If this a year that you want to save, set your budget to a smaller amount and make sure that your family knows what you are doing. Look into DIY gifts. It’s very important that we understand cash flow in terms of what we are going to have afterwards. Remember the new year is right around the corner. Money is something that is hard to get, but easy to spend.
GETTING ORGANIZED
Olivia Sophia, Inc. De-stress through journal writing, meditation and prayer. Our planners are simplified. We have amazing reviews of how simple our planners are to help women organize. "Time is a resource we don't get back. We have to be great stewards of our time."
The Power of Journal Writing I have 3 different types of journals. My heart journal helps me to stay organized eternally and emotionally. I have a journal for my daughter. I record activities of what she likes to do. I have one for my marriage. Those are my top 3.
I also have a prayer journal. It’s my relationship with the Lord. I use this to connect with God on a daily basis. Our company is based on love and faith. He leads me and directs me. Practical organization - my planner is my world. Everyone should have a planner that is inspirational. If your planner is bright and fun, you will be more inspired to stay on track.

LAUREN KUTTING Getting Organized with ToteSavvy
CEOMOM interviewed Lauren Kutting, the founder of ToteSavvy, for our September 2016 issue. We were excited to include her in our holiday issue for the "Get Organized..." section. The ToteSavvy is an amazing addition to a busy mom's tote bag. It allows her to turn her everyday tote bag into a diaper bag. With various sections for baby items such as diapers, wipes, bibs and more, you are sure to be more organized without compromising your individual style. What separates ToteSavvy from other companies who create organizational products like yours? ToteSavvy is unique in its design and functionality. Before ToteSavvy there wasn’t a handbag organizer with structured walls that didn’t collapse inside your bag. It’s also one of the few organizers on the market that’s made specifically for parents. Tell us a little bit about your new products and the passion behind them. We love hearing customer feedback and focusing in on what they’re looking for. One common concern is that ToteSavvy cannot be machine washed. While we’re unable to make the entire insert machine washable at this time, we can certainly make parts of it washable. We’re introducing a detachable

bottle bag (insulated) to keep its contents hot or cold, and fully contained. If there’s a spill you can wash the bottle bag and keep the mess from going inside your ToteSavvy. This bottle bag, of course, fits inside ToteSavvy’s pockets. We’re also launching a deluxe changing station for parents who are only looking to carry diapers, wipes, creams and a change of clothing. We’ve heard from a bunch of exclusively nursing moms that they don’t need to carry a ton with them during the first 9 months. This product will be ultra light and perfect for quick diaper or clothing changes. What are your must have holiday items or things to do? I love to cozy up with scarves during the holidays. The recent trend of blanket scarves that can double as a blanket are perfect for this! Inside my ToteSavvy you’ll find my S’well bottle is filled with coffee or tea to warm me up when on the go. As far as activities, my family and I are looking forward to the annual Fantasy of Lights event held in our town. They decorate the park with lights and pair the show with holiday music. We drive through in our car singing along and sipping hot cocoa.

SARAH BARNARD MEAL PLANNING & MORE
Getting Organized with Chart a la Carte
We’ve all heard or even used the saying, “I wish I would have known…” There are at least 100 things I wish someone would have told me before I became a mom. One of them being, how challenging it is to manage a household. Founder of Chart A La Carte, Sarah Barnard, who affectionately calls herself a pre-mom, is helping families manage their households through a line of task boards designed to open communication and encourage chore sharing.
Who is Chart A La Carte? What products and services do you offer? Chart a la Carte is a start-up company offering unique organizational products designed with core values of creativity and versatility. Our most popular product is our signature board: A beautifully built magnetic pin board with a storage compartment and detachable wooden frame, which allows the user to customize the fabric to their changing space or style. We’ve also created magnetic acrylic displays, in 3 sizes, which hold any organizational list or chart (we have free printables) and have dry or wet-erase capability.
How do your products help moms with day to day activities and/or stay organized? So many ways! Our free printables offer help with menu-planning, grocery lists, household communication, scheduling, “to-do’s” and more, all in an attractive style with several color options. Moms can print whatever lists or charts they need, slip them into our acrylic magnets, place them on our boards (or other metal surface, though we’ve seen that many fridges are no longer magnetic, these days), and use with our dry-erase or wet-erase markers. It’s also environmentally friendly, because, instead of going through several pads of paper, you only have to print our lists once, and then re-use as often as you like. We’re also working on a reversible chalkboard and whiteboard panel, as an optional tool, that can be stored on the back of the board when not in use. What separates Chart A La Carte from other companies who create organizational products? Great question. Lots of companies make quality magnetic boards or bulletin boards, whiteboards or chalkboards (Crate & Barrel, Pottery Barn, West Elm). What sets Chart A La Carte apart are: 1. Our boards can contain all of these functions in one board 2. Customization options for the style of fabric (our boards come with a light, neutral fabric, but the detachable frame allows each person to easily express their own personal style and find what works best for their space as their style and space changes over the years) 3. Fun ways to personalize the boards with decorative wooden magnets that can spell a name or phrase. 4. Free printables that can become dry or wet erasable (we offer markers as well) 5. We are committed to nurturing our strong, grassroots community and building a space of sharing inspiration, tips and photos.

What are your 5 tips for helping moms stay organized during the holidays? 1. Get into the holiday spirit by decorating your family’s command center or Chart a la Carte board with holiday themed fabric (or wrapping paper)! Pin an ornament, kid-made snowflake or a candy cane for an extra festive touch. 2. Create a holiday task list and work as a team with your partner or household to split up tasks most effectively. Our mini dry erase magnets help family members stay on task, and get credit when tasks are completed. 3. Create, save and print a holiday family activity list: Include one column for your family’s cherished holiday traditions you do every year, and a second column for new activities you’d like to share either this year, or a future year. 4. Scheduling/planning! Create a holiday calendar for the family. Give yourself a bird's eye view of your family's time commitments by printing out a blank calendar from our website and filling it in with these special events. 5. Create holiday inventory checklists that you can refer to each year, in advance, to make sure you have the staples you need.

Lindsay's Top Tips for Staying Fit During the Holidays Tip #1 Don’t give into every craving! Between now and New Year's you will have several days you indulge (notice I did not say overindulge). You stack Christmas on top of Thanksgiving on top of Halloween and top it off with Egg Nog and cookies the week before New Year's…let’s just say that equals about 10-15 days of indulging. Be mindful and get back on track. No more marathoning indulgences between now and New Year's Day. Tip #2 Keep a plan, an exercise plan. You eat better when you exercise! Maybe switch to evening workouts if you tend to overindulge in front of the DVR at 10:00 pm. If you need an exercise plan we have tons of 30 & 60 Day programs in my streaming workout portal. They will keep you on track! Tip #3 Don’t go outside your perimeter. You may have heard it before – all those little bites, licks and tastes off your kids plates + mindless Goldfish grabs = too many calories. Instead of eating 5 Cookies while firing off emails and cooking dinner, set a POA, a Plan of Action. Plan your treats. Take time, savor them. Tip #4 Now this tip is my own saving grace. I don’t buy my favorite candy until the week before Halloween…usually… I might have bought a bag of peanut butter kisses on my eighth trip to Walgreeens since my oldest had pneumonia…and I passed by it the other 7 times. What are your family’s favorite holiday traditions? A few years ago we started going to an indoor waterpark with the kids in December. They love it! And I treasure the memories we make by going away for a weekend, just the five of us.
FIT MOM : TALKING HOLIDAY FITNESS WITH LINDSAY BRIN The average weight gain during the holidays is 2.5 pounds. Inspired by her mom who was an aerobics teacher, Lindsay Brin has dedicated herself to helping women maintain fitness during and after pregnancy. This mother of 3 has been in over 50 DVD's made especially for moms. With her fitness tips and workout, you are sure to stay on track during the holiday season. Other than limited time, what are some of the biggest challenges moms face when it comes to starting a fitness plan? With a gazillion websites and social media stories, it is hard to know which is the right fitness plan! The recipe for the right fitness plan includes a little enjoyment, time-sensitivity and commitment! What advice would you give to a mom who wants to improve her family’s health? I know in my home, it all starts with me. I do the grocery shopping. I pack the lunches. I cook our meals. So if I can gain a little knowledge each day, I can set my family up for good health. But again we are faced with a gazillion opinions on this vs. that. At my company, we have a Registered Dietitian on staff who helps us filter through all the fluff. What is the Moms Into Fitness Program? What products and services do you offer? I started Moms Into Fitness in 2004 to help pregnant women. Getting ready to embark on the pregnancy journey myself, I knew that other moms would also be wondering what is safe during pregnancy? Over the last 12 years this has turned into multiple programs, from pregnancy to postpartum to superfit. We offer digital workouts and DVD workouts just for moms. And most recently launched a certification program for moms who want to teach pregnancy and postnatal fitness. What inspired you to start Moms Into Fitness? My mom! I grew up watching her teach aerobics. She always encouraged me to follow my passion. And she was right behind me when I got my degree in Exercise Science.

3 Exercises to Keep You Fit During the Holidays
These exercises are safe for pregnancy. Please read all the pregnancy do's and don'ts before starting any exercise program! Visit http://www.momsintofitness.com. Why warm up? Have you ever been 3 minutes into a workout and wondered how you are ever going to finish? I have done it so many times...I start running and wonder how I will ever run more than 5 minutes. Well a warm up will help that! A proper warm up prepares your body for the work. So do yourself a favor warm your body by moving for 3-5 minutes, then start the work.
2
Why stretch? The end stage of a workout allows your body and heart rate to return to normal. Follow this with a stretch and your body will thank you! Stretching helps ailments as well as creates long, pliable muscles! We are going to begin with the TA breath. What is the TA (transverse abdominis)? To sum it up, it is the innermost core muscle responsible for keeping your belly from dragging to your toes during pregnancy. And it is extremely important that you know how to activate the TA during exercise. TA Breath - Take a deep breathe. Now place your hand on your belly button. Take a deep inhale while letting your belly button and lower rib cage expand. Don’t let the shoulders rise (as they probably did in your first breath). As you exhale pull your belly button towards your spine. That is action of the deep core muscle – the TA – as you exhale, it is working. If you truly engaged the TA, your hips did not tilt, and the only movement came from the belly. As you pull your belly button towards your spine – the curve in your spine might decrease. This is fine as long as your hips did not tilt. Perform this TA breath for 30 seconds on and 30 seconds off, or 5-10 repetitions.
3 1. Bicycle Modified 2. Cross Stretch 3. Curtsey Squat
For all of the exercises - Repetitions: 1 set of 15 for beginners; 2 sets of 15 for veterans

KATHY PICCARI THIS MOM IS REVOLUTIONIZING INTERIOR DESIGN
If you're like most families, you started the day after Thanksgiving decorating the tree and making your home festive for the holidays. However, you may be tired of the same ideas and would like to add a new flair to this year's decor. CEOMOM interviewed the founder of Harris and Tweed Interiors and co-owner of Pineapple on Main, Kathy Piccari, to get some fresh and new ideas for holiday decor. Kathy is one of the most sought after interior designers in Pennsylvania, because of her attention to detail and aptitude to think outside the box. How would you describe Harris and Tweed’s interior design style? Our design aesthetic lends itself to a cohesive mix of classic foundation pieces and modern accents. We establish the quintessential look of mid-century modern with refined lines, natural materials and shapes, warm and earthy colors. We add depth to our vision by incorporating modern accents into the mix, such as brighter colors, bolder patterns and textured fabrics. This blended style boasts an abundant yet modest environment while giving us the opportunity to reflect the unique personalities of each of our clients.
Describe your process for event design, home styling and set styling. Our services range from color consultations to full-out renovations, so the depth of our project varies for each client. Generally speaking, we outline the phases of our design process in this manner: i. Consultation: Our initial meeting to discuss design vision and inspiration, goals, desired timeline and budget. We usually like to take measurements and photographs of the involved spaces during this meeting. ii. Visual Presentation: Our second meeting during which we present a concept board visualizing suggested layout, color scheme and specific design elements (textiles, furniture, fixtures, etc). This meeting concludes with final approval of our suggested design concept. iii. Projected Schedule: A timeline including sourcing, custom
orders, purchasing, labor and final installation. This also includes a projected schedule of work being completed by contractors and trade workers who are also involved in the project. iv. Final Approval: The final approval usually takes place on the day of final installation. Collectively, we make sure that the t’s have been crossed and the i’s have been dotted, and that the client is completely satisfied with his/her space. If the client agrees, professional photos are also taken during this time. What inspired you to open Pineapple on Main? I come from a retail-management background and have always had a pipe dream of opening my own retail store. I asked myself a million times how I could ever make that happen or where I would even start. The intimidation of the idea alone got the better of me so I invested
my comfortable passion in interior design and established Harris & Tweed Interiors with my business partner in 2013. Two years later, Harris & Tweed found itself in a studio space in Manayunk, Pennsylvania. The business acquired local design clients organically and rather quickly, as the space lends itself to a great amount of foot traffic. The problem was finding a local shopping destination that offered affordable and practical housewares, textiles and accent furniture. We took a look around the studio and at that moment, we knew we had to take that leap and start bringing in products ourselves. What are some of the signature products and services Pineapple on Main offers? At Pineapple on Main, we offer home furnishings and accents, children’s room décor and giftware. We carry a wide variety of items in each of those categories, but our loyal customers definitely have their favorites.
Our barware and servingware is so popular! Cheese knives, slate cheeseboards, brass coasters and brass bottle openers are THE perfect birthday, bridal,host/hostess gifts. And our nursery/children’s section is constantly expanding! What are your family’s favorite holiday traditions? My four kids and I celebrate Christmas. The highlight of our holiday is choosing the design theme of our Christmas tree. Every year, we collaboratively design our tree in lieu of a specific theme. In the past, we’ve done a Kate Spade tree, a Mario and Luigi tree, a Disney tree and even an Instagram tree (the ornaments were hashtags made out of popsicle sticks and printed Instagram pictures. Cute, I promise!). It’s a whole night of planning the tree’s design concept over hot chocolate and cookies.
Kathy's Top 5 Holiday Decor Tips TIP # 1
TIP # 2
Save money on holiday décor by using what you already have! Keeping holiday-themed housewares out on display provides easy access during this busy time of year and doubles as festive décor! Hanging your cutting and serving boards on the walls also frees up the extra kitchen space you’ll need when preparing meals for your guests!
Investing in a new dishware collection may not be in your budget this holiday season, but that’s ok! Switch out your salad plate for a decorative cocktail plate and your guests won’t even realize you’re using your everyday dishware! Also, add a little shimmer to your serving platters and keep them on display.
2
TIP # 3 Create a beautiful and long-lasting tablescape by incorporating faux greenery into your design! Adorning your table with hearty magnolia leaves creates a warm, inviting atmosphere that can stay on display for the entire season!
TIP # 4
TIP # 5
Apples on display keep boring tablescapes away, especially if it’s the fruit of the season! Display local harvest to boast a fresh and zestful aesthetic!
Tis the season of giving, so if you’re the guest of honor at a holiday party, you don’t want to show up empty-handed! The 2016 Holiday season flaunts the perfect host/hostess gifts that are guaranteed to fit into every budget!
(Calling all moms!! I can pretty much guarantee your children will want to eat their fruits and veggies once they’re on display! Winning!)
Bonus: Mixing naturals and metallics is one of my favorite holiday design trends of 2016!!
