The 15 th Anniversary of CEO P I O NE E RI NG E F F O RT S S I N CE 1 9 8 3 In 1983, a student meeting was held in Chicago to discuss the development of a national entrepreneurship organization for college students. The meeting was facilitated by Gerald Hills, who at the time was a professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Twelve students, representing seven area universities, along with John Hughes and Jean Thorne attended. At the time of the meeting, entrepreneurship as a field of study was a new concept and very few universities offered coursework in the subject. The students enthusiastically discussed their own entrepreneurial aspirations and how networking across campuses could be beneficial. This meeting planted the seed that led to the Collegiate Entrepreneurs of Illinois Conference in 1984. The conference exceeded expectations with attendance of nearly 300 students from 30 universities. UIC's Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies served as the conference headquarters, and faculty and students from DePaul, Loyola, the Illinois Institute of Technology and Northwestern University assisted in the planning and implementation. The Coleman Foundation contributed generously as a sponsor and has continued that support to date. In 1985, the name of the conference was changed to the Collegiate Entrepreneurs of the Midwest. After years of success and growth, Dr. Hills conducted research into the feasibility of creating a national/global organization. In 1997, the Collegiate Entrepreneurs’ OrganizationSM (CEO) was officially launched as a membership organization. During the next two years, pilot conferences were held with attendance of more than 700 students representing nearly 100 universities. With the support of major sponsors, CEO was able to add full time staff, and chapters began to appear on more and more campuses across North America. Today, CEO is the premier entrepreneurship network with over 245 chapters on university campuses across North America, continuing to promote its mission “to inform, support and inspire college students to be entrepreneurial and seek opportunity through enterprise creation.”

CEO VISION The vision of CEO is to change the world through allowing and supporting college students to achieve their entrepreneurial dreams.

CEO MISSION

The Collegiate Entrepreneurs’ Organization informs, supports, and inspires college students to be entrepreneurial and seek opportunity through enterprise creation.

CE O LE ADE RSHIP KE Y NO TE 4:05 PM – 5:00 PM in Conference Center Room CC12CD KEYNOTE Henry Givray, SmithBucklin The Passion of Leadership According to Henry Givray, leadership is the uniquely consistent and defining force behind great, enduring organizations. But what is leadership? We know when we see it. We can measure its impact. And we can feel how it inspires us. However, leadership is an elusive concept for which there are no simple formulas or playbooks. That’s why leadership can't be taught – it must be learned through a process of personal, active engagement and self-discovery. Henry’s presentation is designed to help others identify opportunities to grow as leaders, while also building their commitment to continuous learning in this area. During the session, Henry shares essential foundational principles and concepts around leadership, introduces a working framework to help others better understand and ultimately measure leadership capacity and performance, and offers practical ideas and tools for everyday use.

The Law. In 45 Minutes. Elizabeth Russell, Russell Law

In business, legal problems can make the difference between success and failure. Arts entrepreneurs need to be proactive (rather than reactive) by spotting issues and knowing when to seek counsel before trouble knocks on the door. You won’t learn everything you need to know in our 45-minute session, but we will bring some of the big ticket issues to your attention. In your arts-focused business you have to understand copyright. So we’ll spend the first half of this session covering copyright basics. In the remaining time, we’ll talk briefly about trademarks, business entity options and financing issues. The time will fly, so try not to blink.

Ideally, she asks artists to recreate themselves based on their past successes, current passions and future desires. She challenges them to do it outside of the confines of whatever the traditional definition of their art form might be.
