After Good Friday, humanity began to suffer in hope. Léon Bloy—French novelist

If I Were God, I’d End All the Pain  Years 9–10 Why teach on suffering? The age-old struggle of humanity. For believers and non-believers alike, suffering touches us all and is forever in the news as an affront to our ideals of the good life and our sense of control over our lives and the world around us. For Christians, suffering raises significant questions about the power and love of God. How does If I Were God, I’d End All the Pain fit within a broader RE program? At an age of increasing independence—both in thought and action— students are challenged by this unit to consider whether they are really in control of their lives. A reasoned response to the problem of suffering is an essential part of Christian maturity. Unit outcomes By the end of this unit, students will be able to: • understand the various faith positions on the ‘problem of suffering’ • appreciate the different ways Christian people have responded to suffering and evil and articulate the reasons for the hope they have • explain how, within the Christian faith, the cross is central to God’s solution to human suffering.
