THE BETA COMMUNE

A Study of time, needs and intersections between the two chosen groups

San Francisco used to be a creative haven. However, the influx of tech industries relocating to the Bay Area has generated conflict between the two groups due to displacement of the former residents. This calls for a need of more affordable housing options for artists. The Beta Commune tackles this by offering communal living between the two. The habitation of the communal spaces would include routine activities, such as living, dining, and kitchen spaces. The ground floor holds a social space for the community to interact with residents. The abstract building skin tucks away the life of the building and relates to protrusions generated by modern bay windows that exist urban fabric of the current neighborhood.

The ground floor encompasses a hackerspace, this is meant to engage with the community as well as provide flexible studio access for both technology and art. The mid and high floor creates communal spaces that are divided by the five foot differences. These spaces offer unique programs, such as communal theatre, pool tables, and even music spaces. This is something that a common individual unit elsewhere might not be able to hold due to space and finances.

This interior render shows the relation of public, private and outdoor space in the commune as well as hints of the steel structure.

THE OUTPOST This studio investigated the boundaries of what consist of Production, Distribution and Repair (PDR) zoning, as well as explored ways to sculpt these spaces. The Outpost was a result of creating a crafts marketplace on the ground level while enclosing private studios, open studios,

fabrication workshop spaces, and gallery spaces on upper levels.

The production of massing models produce an idea of light and circulation constantly having a conversation with one another.

The levels of visiblity through a range of transparency, and how that impacts a space was further explored through the project.

Programming

The massing models and the programming was then merged together through creating a large ground level open void as a public realm and private studios and enclosed workshops in the upper

fragments of the building.

The structure of the void was then explored through hanging paper clips and dipping string into rockite.

The massing further influenced the building through the implementation of intersecting voids and overlapping spaces that created moments of solids and voids within the building.

The facade then begins to mimic the superstructure on the inside, while still producing a play on light and transparency through a

light mesh and translucent glass additions.

THE URBAN HOTEL

ENCHANTED FOREST Enchanted forest gave us the opportunity to design, fabricate and assemble a permanent installation piece in the mission bay addition of

826 Valencia.

The 6 of us worked together with WRNS Studio, BCCI buidlers and TNDC communtiy partner. We were tasked to conceal a 14’ concrete column, while respecting the on going theme of an enchanted forest.

I was tasked with drawing and detailing the attachment to the column. CEILING LINE

14 MASTER RIBS WILL HAVE 2 RIBS ATTACHED TO EACH SIDE THROUGH BOLTING SYSTEM. THIS BOLTING HAPPENS IN AN ALTERNATE MANNER ( 6” DIFFERENCE IN HEIGHT) TO ENSURE ENOUGH SPACE FOR EACH BOLT.

PORTALES/PORTALS Collaboration with UNAM students in Mexico City to explore commonly found mexican materials. This installation was made out of malla/mesh fabric. Our group explored the idea of hanging, interacting and viewing through our ‘wall’ installation. This temporary installation took a weekend of ideation and 4 days to fabricate and install.

URBAN PRISM

The Urban Prism is a project that creates a retreat without retreating. It tackles the prevention of gentrification through the process of upzoning to increase development and finance, and downzoning according to environmental restraints and to enable public use.The manipulation of vacant lots will transform the existing informal economy into a disruptive grid system, which will reveal itself over time.
