Showpiece entry
2017 saw the remodelling and modernization of the approx. 1,400 m² forecourt of the VR-Leasing AG headquarters at Eschborn in the south of the German Federal State of Hesse. The high-grade cast stone covering, which combines prestige value and functional efficiency, was laid in a special bound construction using high-performance products supplied by Sopro Bauchemie GmbH. VR-Leasing AG is a highly respected financialsector company that offers various financing models for businesses. Established in 1972, it is headquartered in Eschborn near Frankfurt/Main and, as a DZ Bank subsidiary, belongs to the Volksbanken Raiffeisenbanken financial services network. VR-Leasing ranks among the biggest manufacturer-independent leasing providers in Europe.
Impervious bound construction as best solution For the remodelling and modernization scheme to the 1,400 m² forecourt of the company's Eschborn headquarters, the client and design team opted for a visually appealing, though no less functionally efficient cast stone tile product manufactured by Rinn. The 14 cm thick paving units, in a variety of sizes ranging up to large formats of 40 x 80 cm, were laid in bound construction on a concrete slab in courses of varying widths. Bound constructions offer a wide range of advantages over unbound coverings laid on a chippings bed: most importantly, the use of bedding adhesives and paving grouts creates a solid bond between base course and surfacing, which then form an integral unit. This is particularly important for pavements exposed to medium- to heavy-duty traffic loads. However, the existing substrate in Eschborn – a concrete ground slab – necessitated the use of a special, impervious form of bound construction. In this situation, it was important to start by applying a sealing slurry suitable for outdoor use as a barrier coat to seal off the ground slab. The product specified by the design team, Sopro TDS 823, is a high-performance, flexible, rapidset, two-component, cementitious sealing slurry that is used to produce crack-bridging waterproof coatings. Not only is it suitable for application in wet spaces and swimming pool areas, it is ideal for balconies, patios and in all outdoor areas, where, as a two-component system, it ensures weatherindependent drying. Based on Sopro MicroGum® technology, the sealing slurry excels by its extra-
high flexibility, very low consumption rate, creamy consistency and smooth workability.
Specially tailored Sopro bedding adhesives and paving grouts
1995 by Roman Holzlehner, the company has evolved into a modern garden architecture and landscaping service provider offering a high level of expertise acquired over many years.
The cast stone units were laid with Sopro MEG 667, a highly flexible, sag-resistant, rapidset, two-component, cementitious tile adhesive, applied in an approx. 10 mm coat thickness. Sopro MEG 667 offers extremely high adhesion strengths coupled with maximum flexibility (grade S2 to DIN EN 12004, deformability ≥ 5 mm). The stressrelieving effect of the mortar matrix makes it particularly suitable for outdoor applications, for young concrete substrates, for newly laid, unheated cement screeds and where the adhesive system is subject to enhanced flexibility requirements. Its very low water absorption guarantees high, long-term frost resistance – which was one of the decisive factors for its specification on this project. While Sopro MEG 667 was used during the cooler weather that initially prevailed, the normal and higher (summer) temperatures that followed allowed the use of Sopro MEG 665, likewise a highly flexible, waterproof, two-component, cementitious floating-bed adhesive. Like Sopro MEG 667, Sopro MEG 665 excels by its extremely high adhesion strengths. This is compounded by its very high saponification resistance and flexibility due to non-redispersible liquid polymers plus – as a key requirement on this project – its high long-term resistance to freeze-thaw cycles on account of a similarly very low water absorption and water impermeability. In specifying the paving grout, the project team opted for a further special product from the Sopro Bauchemie GmbH range: Sopro BSF 611. This product is particularly suitable for grouting joints in concrete and cast stone segmental pavements in road, garden and landscaped areas. Thanks to its special additives, the rapid-set, hydraulic, cementitious, trass-bearing paving grout exhibits a compact, medium- to high-strength microstructure that makes it suitable for medium- to heavyduty vehicular loads (compressive strengths > 35 N mm2). Sopro BSF 611 is resistant to frost and de-icing salts, suction sweeper loads and highpressure water jetting. The grout is also specially formulated to reduce the risk of efflorescence. The paving works were performed by Holzlehner GmbH, Garten- & Landschaftsbau, a contractor from Usingen in the Taunus region. Set up in VR-Leasing AG, Eschborn I www.sopro.com
