High-tech tractors made in Germany

The new Deutz-Fahr Arena, an ultramodern visitor and training centre in the town of Lauingen on the banks of the River Danube, marks a key milestone in the development of the globally operating tractor manufacturer Deutz-Fahr. Visitors now have the chance, through first-hand experience, to learn all about the high-tech tractors made in Germany. For over a century, the Deutz-Fahr brand has been synonymous with dependable, innovative German tractor technology and has duly reaped global success. To develop this brand essence, the SDF Group – as Deutz-Fahr's parent – last year pressed ahead with a new scheme. Following completion of the new tractor factory in Lauingen, currently the most modern facility of its kind anywhere in Europe, the Group proceeded to build a stateof-the-art visitor and training centre, the DeutzFahr Arena, on the site directly opposite the new assembly plant.

Ultramodern visitor and training centre The new complex has a total cubic content of 38,000 m3. The two-storey building contains the tractor showroom, the Deutz-Fahr Museum, a cinema, a shop plus conference and training rooms. An extensive test track is also planned. Visitors are now able to closely familiarize themselves with the various products and gain hands-on experience of high-tech tractors made in Germany. "In terms of its visual impact, the Deutz-Fahr Arena is a perfect match for the new tractor factory," explains Rainer Morgenstern, spokesman for the management board of Deutz-Fahr in Germany in a press release. "The two building complexes are a superb expression of our brand essence: 'high-tech made in Germany'. Moreover, the new amenities, presentation and conference technology, and catering facilities have opened up a host of new possibilities. Each year, the new Arena will enable us to receive over 10,000 visitors and train 3,000 dealers with cutting-edge resources."

Tiling craftsmanship tailored to site requirements High-grade tile coverings were specified for both the ground-floor showroom spaces and upper-floor VIP rooms of the new two-storey Deutz-Fahr Arena. Large-format (60 x 60 x 2 cm), anthracite-coloured units are installed in most of the exhibition areas while the VIP facilities also feature attractive imitation-wood tiles. The

coverings were laid directly on a heated concrete substrate, pretreated with Sopro GD 749 primer and evened out in places using Sopro OFS 543, a pumpable, flow-applied, self-levelling, rapid-set, cementitious filler for the creation of smooth, unbroken surfaces prior to the installation of all kinds of flooring. The tiling works were performed by Fliesen Röhlich GmbH. The family business from Wendelstein has, in recent years, established itself as one of Germany's biggest tiling contractors. Now employing almost 300 tile and natural stone layers, it specializes in the prompt and expert performance of large-scale national projects. The works had to be performed within a tight construction window, with only four working weeks available to install the total 3,800 m² of tile coverings. These time constraints coupled with nature of the substrate – a relatively young, heated concrete base – prompted the project team to specify Sopro MG 679 MG-Flex® XXL as the bedding adhesive. The highly flexible (grade C2 FT S2 to DIN EN 12004), one-component thinbed adhesive, with very high crystalline water binding capacity, lends itself to use on both wall and floor surfaces. The stress-relieving effect of the mortar matrix achieved by the Sopro MicroGum® technology allows application of the rapid-set, S2-grade adhesive, without a separating layer, to newly laid cement screeds, over wall and floor heating systems and on critical substrates, such as hollow floors and board subfloors. The adhesive offers excellent workability and, due to its fibre reinforcement, high sag resistance. It also achieves an up to 30% higher coverage than standard Sopro thin-bed adhesives without lightweight aggregate. To ensure the required near-complete elimination of voids below the coverings, these were laid using the buttering/ floating method. During the first phase of the works, the joints in the coverings were finished with Sopro FL floor flexible floor tile grout. Sopro FL, a flexible, waterrepellent, trass-bearing, cementitious tile grout, meeting CG2 WA requirements to DIN EN 13888, was then specified for the subsequent works. Sopro FL is used to grout ceramic and fully vitrified stoneware tiling, natural and cast stone coverings, and glass blocks. It excels by its rapid initial set, is ideal for low-suction tiles and is very easy to wash off. This easy removability helps to minimize the consumption rate. Sopro FL is suitable for 2 – 20 mm joint widths, particularly on balconies and patios, and in conjunction with wall and floor heating.

Throughout the project period, from the design to the production phase, Sopro's Project Consulting and regional management teams were at hand to provide the designers and contractor with advice and support.
