Holiday Inn Hamburg-City North

Four-star wall and floor finishes

The new Holiday Inn Hamburg-City North is a place that lends a sense of well-being for business travellers and families alike. The 297 rooms, spread over 18 storeys, offer guests four-star comfort, along with some stunning views of the Hanseatic city. The elliptically shaped facade gives visitors a foretaste of the contemporary interior awaiting them within. The international hotel group's new Open Lobby brand concept was cleverly accentuated through the design and materiality of the floor finishes. Key to the internal arrangement are the seamless transitions between functional zones: reception, foyer, lounge, bar, restaurant, meeting points, workplaces and private areas. By generating an open, congenial atmosphere, the "XXL living room" invites both hotel guests and casual visitors to linger. The entrance area is the first place in a hotel to be experienced by guests. They decide within seconds whether or not this is an environment in which they feel at home. In the new Holiday Inn HamburgCity North, the Open Lobby concept recasts the traditional entrance area as a welcoming locale with a wide variety of offerings. Alongside the distinctive styling and material mix, the special feature of the concept is the open configuration, with flowing transitions between functions: coming and going, checking in and checking out, giving and receiving information, relaxing and working, eating and drinking. In specifying the floor coverings, the focus was on materials that were capable of meeting the diverse functional requirements while also enhancing the feel-good factor. Ceramic tiles, in different formats, colours and laying patterns, are a recurring feature and also offer practical benefits for the Open Lobby environment. Tailored installation methods based on Sopro system solutions successfully delivered ceramic floor coverings that combine hardwearing, functionally efficient and longlasting performance with the visual appeal appropriate to the subtle, multi-faceted Open Lobby concept.

System solutions for reliable waterproofing and tiling The large-format (120 x 50 cm), imitation-stone tiles installed in the lobby underline the spacious feel of the entry sequence. The coverings here, like those in the kitchens and guest bathrooms, testify to the outstanding product and workability properties of Sopro FF 450 and Sopro's No.1 flexible tile adhesives. The joints were finished

using the cementitious Sopro TF+ high-strength grout, which excels by its high mechanical strength, abrasion resistance and colour brilliance. Particularly remarkable is the bold "tile carpet" look of the breakfast room. Here, star-shaped ornamental features are created by the highprecision laying of (20 x 20 cm) tiles in groups of four. Ceramic tiles laid with Sopro system solutions were also specified for the bathrooms of the 297 guest rooms in the Holiday Inn Hamburg-City North. Imitation-stone tiles were installed on the floors and elongated (20 x 60 cm), white-coloured units on the walls and in the shower areas. The joints were finished with Sopro DF 10 flexible designer tile grout to create a harmonious ensemble that nonetheless offers the required functional performance. The system components Sopro FDF flexible sealing compound and Sopro TDS 823 two-component turbo sealing slurry were used to waterproof the bathroom walls and floors. As in the kitchens, the Sopro AEB 640 waterproofing and separating membrane, watertightly sealed with Sopro RMK 818 Racofix® universal adhesive or Sopro TDS 823, was additionally incorporated in the shower areas to deliver a high-performance solution. Visitors seeking a break in the hotel's 18th-floor fitness and wellness suite will also benefit from an immaculate environment crafted with Sopro system products. Sopro products were also specified for the hotel's ancillary spaces, not seen by the guests, e.g. the hotel kitchens, where high-quality workmanship and the appropriate functional properties were required.

suitable waterproofing and tile-laying proposals for all areas. Having already been involved at the design stage, Sopro's Project Consulting team also provided applicators with advice and support throughout the construction period.

Styling and functional requirements set the bar high Apart from the aesthetic design concept for the new Holiday Inn Hamburg-City North, the project also imposed stringent functional demands. Large areas of ceramic tiling are provided not only to enhance the coherence and continuity of the design, but also to improve the user-friendliness of the facility. Sopro's system products offered both contractors, Upplegger GmbH & Co. KG from Neubukow and Fliesenservice Spaans & Henke GmbH from Rostock, the ideal tailored functional solution for each application while at the same time achieving the desired visual appeal. The scope offered by the system for the subtle co-ordination of products to meet specific requirements was crucial for the tendering of Holiday Inn Hamburg-City North I www.sopro.com
