New five-star resort on the Black Sea coast
Georgia's Black Sea coast boasts magnificent beaches and a near-untouched shoreline. Even during the era of the Soviet Union, Georgia was already a favourite holiday destination for the rich and beautiful. This explains the origin of the many seaside resorts, which have since been geared to western standards and easily rival their Adriatic and Riviera counterparts. The supreme standards of holiday comfort offered by many new-build hotels is only one reason why Georgia's coastline has become something of an insider tip for western Europeans. One of these establishments is the Marriott International Paragraph Resort & Spa, completed in 2017 and situated in the small seaside town of Shekvetili. Located directly by the beach, the luxurious Paragraph Resort & Spa is a five-star resort, complete with an outdoor pool, extensive spa and wellness facilities including indoor pool, a tennis court and a fitness centre. Virtually all of the 220 comfortably furnished rooms have spacious balconies with a sea view. An attractive indoor aqua park with a sizeable aquarium and gigantic flumes round out the holiday offerings.
Surface filling and waterproofing meeting supreme standards of workmanship To perform the comprehensive surface filling and waterproofing works needed during construction, contractor Cartu Group Holding, based in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi, opted for the use of products from Sopro Bauchemie GmbH's trade range. These included Sopro HF-S 563, a heavyduty, flow-applied, rapid-set, cementitious floor-levelling compound with extremely high compressive strength, flexural tensile strength and abrasion resistance. Sopro HF-S 563 is lowchromate, suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, and can be machine applied. Further merits include its excellent workability and hardened mortar properties, guaranteed by Mikrodur® technology. One of the waterproofing products specified by the project managers was Sopro DSF 523, a flexible, one-component, cementitious sealing slurry for the production of crack-bridging membranes. The vapour-permeable sealing slurry was used to install waterproof membranes both in the damp and wet spaces and on the balconies. The structural waterproofing to the external building face was performed using Sopro KD 754, a two-component, solvent-free, polymer-modified bituminous thick coating with polystyrene filler
for the production of flexible, crack-bridging waterproof/tanking membranes to basements. It ensures the long-term protection of elements in contact with soil to DIN 18533 Part 3 for the applications W1-E "Ground moisture and water without hydrostatic pressure", W2.1-E "Moderate water pressure action", W3-E "Water without hydrostatic pressure acting on buried suspended slabs" and W4-E "Splash water and ground moisture acting on wall plinths" (formerly DIN 18195 Parts 4 and 6). It is suitable for application to both vertical and horizontal surfaces, including ground slabs, foundations and basement walls. Apart from offering excellent sag resistance, the trowellable and sprayable product is also rapid-drying and resistant to heat and cold.
Handsome, brilliantly coloured joint patterns The project team also made a sound and original choice of grouts for the tiling works in the new Paragraph Resort & Spa. One of these was Sopro DF 10, a latest-generation cementitious tile grout which, by virtue of its special formulation and OPZ® (Portland cement-free) technology, delivers a brilliantly coloured joint pattern with lasting appeal and completely free from unsightly lime films. The inherent water-beading effect coupled with Hydrodur® technology also guarantees longterm protection against mould formation and microorganisms. Moreover, compared to standard Sopro cementitious tile grouts, the product offers enhanced resistance to acidic cleaners for domestic applications. A further intriguing feature of the Sopro DF 10 grout is the possibility of creating a distinctive, visually attractive, glistening joint finish through the addition of Sopro gold or silver glitter. Designers can choose between a total of 27 attractive colours. Sopro DF 10 is thus far more than a mere joint filler and actively enhances the appeal of the interior finishings. Sopro DF 10 combines supreme technical performance with the highest aesthetic standards. These factors plus the importance, from a Georgian point of view, of the "made in Germany" quality label prompted the project team to specify Sopro DF 10 for large areas of the Paragraph Resort & Spa and, in particular, in the bathrooms and on the balconies of the guest rooms.
