Bad am Stadtwald pool, Neumünster

New indoor pool with open-air feeling

Since December 2017, swimmers in the town of Neumünster in the German Federal State of Schleswig-Holstein have been able to clock up their lengths in the new 50-metre indoor pool at the Bad am Stadtwald baths. Depending on the weather, they can even enjoy an open-air experience under the retracted "Cabrio roof". In recent years, winter swimming had only been possible in a makeshift pneumatic structure fitted over Neumünster's outdoor pool. In the wake of repeated, severe storm damage, the Stadtwerke Neumünster town utilities decided against a "facelift" and in favour of a new, € 12 million indoor pool with a "Cabrio roof" – as yet the only one in Schleswig-Holstein. As a result, there is no longer any clear-cut distinction between the indoor and outdoor swimming seasons in Neumünster. Depending on the weather, the 2,100 m² roof can be retracted and the visitors treated to an open-air swimming experience. The extension to the existing facility, which had been designed by KRIEGER Architekten I Ingenieure GmbH from Velbert in 1974, offers eight competition-standard, 50-metre lanes. With the new scheme, the town of Neumünster not only aims to cater for local school and club swimming over the coming decades. It also hopes that the pulling power of the Cabrio pool hall, in particular, will attract young and old from the entire region – from Kiel in the north to Hamburg in the south.

Best-practice substrate preparation and standards-compliant waterproofing As is standard in swimming pool construction, ceramic coverings in all varieties pervade the remodelled Bad am Stadtwald, featuring as a key aesthetic and functional element throughout, from the changing rooms, showers and toilets to the 50-metre pool and pool decks. The elaborate substrate preparation, waterproofing and tiling works at the Neumünster facility were performed by fliesen tiedemann GmbH, a family business based in Itzehoe and set up as early as 1976. As its website proclaims, the company combines "expert craftsmanship and in-depth experience in the tiling trade with the flexibility guaranteed by a committed, 30-strong workforce". Its credentials are underlined by numerous swimming pool project references gathered nationwide. For the above works, the design and applicator teams opted for the use of tried-and-tested system products tailored to swimming pool applications from the Sopro Bauchemie GmbH range. The pool

construction was evened out with Sopro SBP 474, a sag-resistant, rapid-set, Portland cement-based render and surface filler containing specially selected, continuously graded mineral aggregate. The composition of this PCC mortar, which is without hydrated lime admixtures, complies with the ZDB (Federation of the German Construction Industry) data sheet "Swimming pool construction – Guidance on design and workmanship for ceramic coverings in swimming pools". Sopro SBP 474 is used to produce level, plumb and true substrates for the subsequent installation of ceramic, natural stone and cast stone coverings. The low-chromate material can be applied as a levelling render in 3 – 30 mm coat thicknesses to even out surfaces in swimming pools and similar water-retaining structures. The standards-compliant waterproof barrier below the tile coverings in the poolside areas, changing rooms, showers and toilets was installed using Sopro DSF 523, a flexible, one-component, cementitious sealing slurry for the production of crack-bridging membranes. Suitable for water action classes W0-I to W3-I to DIN 18534 and water action class W1-B to DIN 18535, the vapourpermeable sealing slurry can be used to install wall and floor membranes in damp and wet spaces as well as in tanks and pools. The material is suitable for roller, trowel, brush and spray application.

properties of a cementitious tile grout. This makes it a viable alternative to reaction resin grouts and an ideal option for swimming pools and wellness suites. Particular attention was given to protecting the movement joints between the poolside areas and pool edge. Here, Sopro SB 113 tape was incorporated below the parallel edge sections to guard the flexible Sopro DB 438 sealing tape. Sopro SB 113 is a protective, flexible, stainlesssteel fabric tape that offers reliable, long-term protection at perimeter and movement joints in waterproof membranes, specifically when silicone sealants are cut out and renewed. Throughout the project period, from the design to the production phase, Sopro's Project Consulting and regional management teams were at hand to provide both the design practice, KRIEGER Architekten I Ingenieure GmbH from Velbert, and the contractor, fliesen tiedemann GmbH from Itzehoe, with advice and support.

Tile laying and grouting with Sopro's high-performance products The tile coverings and ceramic swimming pool fittings supplied by Agrob Buchtal were expertly installed using Sopro’s No.1 flexible adhesive. As its C2 TE S1 rating certifies, this product is both highly deformable and, by virtue of its high polymer modification and fibre reinforcement, highly sag-resistant. Key benefits for applicators include the smooth, creamy workability of the very-low-emission product. The joints in the coverings were finished using Sopro TF+, a brilliantly coloured, high-strength, rapid-set, cementitious tile grout (meeting CG2 WA requirements to DIN EN 13888) for grouting stoneware, fully vitrified stoneware, natural stone, cast stone and mosaic with 1 – 10 mm joint widths. Its lime-film-free finish ensures a brilliantly coloured joint pattern with lasting appeal, for both indoor and outdoor applications, and especially in moisture-exposed areas. The grout also excels by its high mechanical strength and abrasion resistance, while nonetheless offering the good workability Bad am Stadtwald pool, Neumünster I www.sopro.com
