Now,time for to learn more about this series! Enjoy reading!

SUMMARY “My name is Dexter. Dexter Morgan. I don’t know what made me the way I am, but whatever it was left a...hollow place inside. People fake a lot of human interactions but I feel like I’ve faked them all and I fake them very well. And that’s my burden, I guess.”1 Based on Jeff Lindsay’s novels Darkly Dreaming Dexter and Dearly Devoted Dexter this crime thriller follows Dexter Morgan. Dexter is a forensic blood spatter expert for the Miami Dade Police Department. He is the main support for his sister. He has a steady girlfriend, with two kids who adore him. He also has an active “night life”. Based on a code instilled in him by his foster father, Harry, he hunts down people who have escaped justice and makes sure they don’t get away with a crime again. He has rules for what he is doing. These ‘moral rules’ make him live as a normal person in the social life.He deals with many serial killers. Some of them easy targets but some of them are though and form the series. These main serial killers are given a “name” or “title” apart from their real name based on their actions. Dexter Morgan for example is (though escaped the title of) Bay Harbor Butcher based on the pieces of body found in a harbor in Miami, while The Icetruck Killer received his name based on moving the 1 http://dexter.wikia.com/ wiki/Dexter_Morgan 2

CHARACTERS Dexter Morgan Dexter Morgan is the main protagonist and titular character of both Showtime’s Dexter and the Dexter Book Series. Dexter is a serial killer who targets other killers (to control his Dark Passenger) rather than harm innocent people. By day, he is a forensic blood spatter analyst with the Miami Metro Police Department, working within Miami Metro Homicide closely with the detectives and other forensic specialists such as Vince Masuka and more recently, Ryan Chambers and later Louis Greene. He is the biological son of Laura Moser and Joe Driscoll and the biological brother of Brian Moser, also known as the Ice Truck Killer.

Dexter was born Dexter Moser on February 1st, 1971[14], only a couple years after Brian Moser by parents Laura Moser and Joseph Driscoll. He lived most of his infantile life with his elder brother at the address 1235 Mangrove Drive in Miami, Florida, confirmed via two arrest records for his mother in 1969 and then in 1971 for drug possession. Dexter lived primarily at this address, however he did spend some of his time with his father, Joe Driscoll, at the address 5570 (unknown street) in Dade City, Florida.

U

nfortunately Dexter’s mother was a drug addict (likely entering the trade when her boyfriend at the time, Joe Driscoll, returned from the Vietnam War and started becoming an addict himself), this never affected her love for her boys but it put her at high risk with certain parties. She met Detective Harry Morgan and began acting as his informant in the Estrada cartel, trying to provide intel that would help bring down the drug kingpin. On Wednesday October 3rd, 1973 Laura Moser, her two sons Dexter and Brian, as well as three other drug users were hurdled into the shipping container CBAN

348 9 by Estrada’s henchmen: Santos Jimenez, Lipsey and Welsh. It is believed that just Santos wielded the chainsaw, as the other two are often seen likely standing there to prevent anyone from escaping.

T

he three unnamed victims were all slain by the chainsaw, leaving Laura Moser for last begging them not to do this in front of her baby. She screamed and cried as they revved the chainsaw, turning then to give a final smile to Dexter. She said to close his eyes, not to look and that she loved him before Santos finally cut into her, killing Laura in front of both of her sons with no remorse. Detective Morgan opened the shipping container door, startled by the absolute carnage inside. He spotted the two children however and moved in to pick up the younger, Dexter. “You’re different, aren’t you Dexter?”2

3

Dexter Morgan has over 17 years (12 prior to 2006, 17 as of 2011) involved in blood-spatter analysis with Miami Metro Homicide. Unlike a majority of his fellow coworkers within Miami Metro Homicide, Dexter hasn’t seen much advancement in his field. Granted, he is the only known blood-spatter analyst in the department while the people he works closest with, such as Vince Masuka, cover the remainder of forensics. However, Dexter has a precise knowledge of his work field and thanks to his interest in blood, this makes him that more efficient in always making sure he solves the case correctly. To Dexter, “the blood doesn’t lie”.

In addition to his many years in service, he has gained popularity from both the unfortunate tragedy of his wife’s death and the line of work he’s invested in. Particularly, characters such as Jordan Chase even knew about him and became interested almost immediately while most of Dexter’s classmates from 1991 were amazed by his “cool job”. Unfortunately this made “Sports Store owner” Joe Walker a bit jealous, due to all the attention Dexter was soaking up and began enjoying. Family Life

That is, unless, persons involved in the case fly into his radar and match the code. If any such suspect fits, he may tamper with evidence to insure they go free for the sake of him claiming their life. In one such instance, to help his sister Debra Morgan, Dexter tampered with evidence to insure that Joey Quinn didn’t take the fall for Stan Liddy’s death.

Dexter was the husband of Rita Bennett (who has the son of Dexter), the adoptive brother of Lieutenant Debra Morgan, and the adoptive son of Doris Morgan and Harry Morgan, the police detective who taught him to survive using the “Code of Harry”. He is also the biological father of Harrison Morgan and the step-father of Astor Bennett and Cody Bennett.

Debra Morgan

Ceren Arın-9/C Dexter’s most important relationship now is with his son, Harrison Morgan. Having grown up within a life of killing those that deserve it, Dexter has decided that he wishes to not pass this on to his child and adopts showing him only the “human” side that everyone else is experiencing. Dexter hasn’t convinced himself yet that the human side he still views as a mask in reality is closer to what he truly is: the fact of being human. Once a man who faked every emotion down to a simple smile, he has evolved into someone who cares for his family and friends while accepting the responsibility of caring for his child as a single parent. In this light, he doesn’t realize that a majority of who he is now is in fact a regular guy with just a dark secret, rather than faking to be a regular guy who is actually just a very dark monster.

Once Harrison was born, Dexter stepped up to his duty as a father and watched over him in trade with his wife Rita. While the focus now was how Dexter would survive for the years to come with his new family and sought the answers in Arthur Mitchell, there was some insight into his relationship with baby Harrison. Mostly he fed him bottles, watched over him and played with him though he mostly remained in the background or as a subtle plot de4

vice for humor until the very end where Rita was found murdered and Harrison sat out in her blood, crying his eyes out. Dexter lost the ability to stand and went to the floor, scooping up Harrison as he dealt with the tragedy of Rita’s death as well as finding his own son in the exact same position he had been in his early years.

Following Rita’s murder, Dexter was heavily concerned with whether or not Harrison would evolve like he did. In that sense, would the tragedy create a Dark Passenger of Harrison’s that would make him kill and several signs throughout Season Five illustrated this from removing a dolls head, disturbing looks and even words such as “die die”. He however proved himself a capable parent in handling his life while also playing father to just Harrison (as Astor and Cody went to stay with their grandparents) and had the nanny Sonya watch over him in times where Dexter had to take care of his own Dark Passenger. So far, it appears that Harrison was far too young for any of this to effect him and rather he’d grow up a normal healthy boy.

Lieutenant Debra “Deb” Morgan is the heroic Deuteragonist (secondary Protagonist) and lead character in DEXTER. Debra is often the conscience of the series, providing the morally correct sense of justice while her brother Dexter Morgan pursues darker means. Her involvement in the plot is usually parallel to Dexter’s, usually hunting the same killer with the intent on bringing them to Justice even though Dexter seeks them to satisfy his Dark Passenger.

Her foster-brother is Dexter Morgan, the main protagonist and serial killer of the series...while both were raised by Deb’s biological parents Harry and Doris Morgan. Debra grew up watching her brother take a lot of the spotlight, often seeking attention from her father who would otherwise focus everything into Dexter. Little did she realize that Harry’s reasoning for doing this was not because he loved her any less but he was trying to control a “weapon” of sorts within his son to handle his

own personal agenda with serial killers. She decided to join the police in his footsteps, hoping to become worthy within his eyes even though he had passed away years before. She started out as a cop in Vice but slowly worked her way up to a shield, making her a detective with the Miami Metro Police Department Homicide division. Season Three saw her primarily partnered with fellow Detective Joey Quinn, thus starting a complicated friendship and eventually relationship. Season Five brought in a new character, Cira Manzon, who acted as first a beat cop partner that eventually made it to homicide while also bringing trouble for Deb. Manzon however has since vanished, likely working on other cases or possibly was transferred. Through many acts as an effective officer in the field, Deputy Chief Tom Matthews decided to promote Deb directly to Lieutenant of Homicide once Maria LaGuerta moved on to be Captain. In Deb’s place, she decided to elect Mike Anderson (a newly transferred rock star detective from Chicago) as her replacement for Detective.

Her relationships are an infamous part of her character, having spent time with story important characters (both good and bad) and some minor ones. Most recently, she’s started a romantic relationship with Joey Quinn 5

and in a complex turn of events, they have gone separate ways with Quinn acting out his anger in being turned down from a recent proposal attempt and Debra accepting her duties in the new position she has at work.

After they get engaged, Cooper kidnaps Debra and lures Dexter to the house where he is keeping her. Here Dexter recognizes Cooper as Brian, his long-lost brother. Brian tells Dexter that, as children, they witnessed their mother’s murder at the hands of drug dealers, who then left the two of them in a shipping crate for two days, sitting in a pool of their mother’s blood. At the start of Season 2, the psychological fallout from killing Brian (his brother) and the constant surveillance by Sgt. Doakes have resulted in Dexter having not killed anyone in more than a month. Furthermore, Dexter learns two upsetting things about Harry: that he was sleeping with Laura Moser, Dexter’s biological mother, before she died and that, after walking in on Dexter in the middle of a kill, Harry committed suicide from the guilt. These discoveries cause his faith in The Code to waver, and Dexter imagines scenarios in which he turns himself in. “Butcher” when it is discovered that his victims were themselves murderers. Doakes confronts Dexter leaving an NA meeting. Doakes is temporarily satisfied that Dexter’s odd behavior can be explained by the traumatic experience of a law enforcement career combined with drug abuse. Doakes’ suspicions about Dexter eventually return, and he ultimately discovers Dexter’s glass slides. The possibility of matching them with the bodies of the Butcher’s victims sets up a climactic show4 6

In the season finale, Tournay finds the cabin where Doakes is imprisoned and causes a propane tank explosion, killing Doakes and blowing up the corpse of one of Dexter’s victims, thus preventing Dexter from being caught. Tournay then meets with Dexter, expecting him to accept her love now that she knows his “dark secret”. She catches him preparing to kill her and seeks revenge by kidnapping Rita’s children and using them to lure Dexter into a trap intended to kill them. Dexter saves the children and escapes, later exacting his own revenge on her after she has fled to Paris. In the closing scenes, Doakes’ memorial service goes largely unattended, with the exception of LaGuerta, Dexter, and Doakes’ immediate family

Rita discovers she is pregnant, informing Dexter that she will keep the baby and raise him with or without his help. He ends up proposing marriage to Rita, which she eventually accepts. The police investigate the death of Wolf and capture The Skinner. Dexter eventually realizes that Miguel cannot be allowed to run loose any longer, at which point Dexter decides to kill him and make it look like The Skinner did it. Meanwhile, Miguel uses his position to help The Skinner escape police custody in return for his agreeing to kill Dexter. Striving to discover the truth about Wolf’s death, LaGuerta ends up obtaining evidence which links Miguel to the crime. Miguel discovers that LaGuerta was investigating him and decides to kill her, but Dexter discovers Miguel’s plot and captures him. Before killing Miguel, Dexter confesses to him that he was the one who killed Oscar.

Season 3

As the police arrive at Dexter’s house,

he is obviously in shock and, either because he feels guilty that his relationship with the Trinity Killer caused Rita’s death or because he is answering a question (“Sir, did you say that you called this in?”) asked by one of the police officers, admits “it was me”. Quinn is already suspicious about the circumstances surrounding Rita’s death, considering it was not Trinity’s modus operandi. He is also suspicious of Dexter’s unemotional manner after the incident. Astor takes Rita’s death particularly hard, and blames Dexter for it. Unable to reconcile, Astor decides that she wants to live with her grandparents in Orlando, and she and Cody leave Miami.

Dexter eventually kills Fowler, but the crime is witnessed by Fowler’s next victim Lumen Pierce (played by Julia Stiles), whom he has in captivity.

Lumen asks Dexter to help her seek revenge on these men, but he initially refuses. After Lumen continues on her own and mistakenly targets the wrong suspect, Dexter teaches her the importance of knowing a person is guilty. Dexter accompanies Lumen to the airport and believes she has left Miami. Dexter soon learns that Lumen has remained behind, when she shoots one of her attackers, and out of desperation asks Dexter to help her clean up the crime scene. Dexter reluctantly agrees, and they finish moments before homicide police locate the crime scene. Lumen later reveals to Dexter that killing one of her attackers brought her a sense of peace, and she tearfully recognizes that it will not last,

7

and she will have to find (and kill) the others to experience that peace again. Dexter recognizes this as being her own “Dark Passenger”, and decides to help her, partly to atone for his earlier inability to save Rita.

Before Dexter can confront Jordan, he is called away to Liddy’s crime scene, where the police suspect Quinn’s involvement in Liddy’s death. Quinn initially complies but later refuses to answer questions. Later, Dexter locates Jordan (and Lumen)’s whereabouts. The two briefly struggle - Dexter overpowers Jordan, and then allows Lumen to kill Jordan. After the kill, Deb discovers the two of them, though they are behind translucent plastic and she is not able to see their identities. Understanding that one of the two figures must be an escaped victim, Deb sympathizes, and retreats so they can escape. After Jordan’s death, Lumen no longer feels the need to kill and tearfully admits she needs to move on, leaving Dexter distraught.

Many series have deaths, such as Law and Order, CSI and even Monk...but not many are caused by a number of Serial Killers, one of which is the main (and title) character of the show, Dexter Morgan. Of course, he’s the only “good” one out of the bunch and for Dexter as a Showtime series and Novel, a lot of people end up dying. Killers and their victims will be ordered based on Main Serial Killers, then Other Serial Killers and finally, Murderers (which covers people who may have only killed one or two people, without any real “cooldown” period to speak of before the next victim). A fourth section will be added for characters who have killed characters though not out of murder (such as James Doakes’s actual killings), called “Non-Guilty Killers”. NOVELS Dexter in itself started out as a novel written by author Jeff Lindsay called Darkly Dreaming Dexter. A TV series shortly followed, thus popularizing DEXTER as a whole for the media to enjoy (becoming America’s favorite serial killer). As both a book series and a television series, both are ongoing with no end in sight. There are major plot differences between the two, specifically character’s lives, roles and even entire story lines. Dexter as a book series has been released in six novels, with the showtime series having been released in seven seasons (as of the moment).
