CONSTRUCTING THE FUTURE

It started with one child...

Neal Patterson, Cerner co-founder, often repeated the story of three bricklayers to Cerner associates as a metaphor for their important work. A man comes across three bricklayers, asking each what they are doing as they pick up one brick and put it in place. The first one says, “I’m putting one brick on top of the other.” The second one says, “I’m building the west wall of a church.” And, the third one says, “I’m constructing a cathedral. It will stand for centuries and inspire people to do great deeds.”

Summing up the story, Neal would tell associates to “be aware of the cathedral we are constructing. Don’t get lost on the chore of simply placing one brick on top of the other without seeing the broader picture.”

First Hand, alongside Cerner, is transforming health care, making it easier, more efficient and seamless for all to access.

Dear Foundation Supporters and Friends, Before expanding to Cerner Charitable Foundation in 2020, First Hand was established 25 years ago as Cerner’s corporate philanthropy. Whether you became a friend to the foundation years ago or are just now learning about us, we are grateful to have your support. Our founders, Jeanne Lillig-Patterson, Neal Patterson and Cliff Illig inspired those around them to do great deeds. That inspiration came to life very clearly in First Hand. Even as the foundation’s vision expands, we continue to live out their legacy. Just as Neal’s story alludes, we must remain focused on this vision — the cathedral that we are all constructing in our communities.

As the foundation continues to grow and evolve alongside Cerner, we are privileged to have your dedication and generous support.

With sincere thanks,

Shanna Adamic Executive Director, Cerner Charitable Foundation

8

The foundation’s vision of a world where children and families achieve their full health potential has not changed much since our founding. If anything, it has become more relevant and important as our world faces the effects of a pandemic, systemic inequities and the rising costs of health care.

FIRST HAND FOUNDATION

Children in the Philippines, India, the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, and other parts of the world deserve quality health care. They deserve to have routine wellness checkups to identify hearing, vision or dental issues before these become major health problems. Their families deserve the peace of mind that comes with knowing their children are healthy and can look forward to the future. That is what First Hand will continue to fund and give to communities around the world.

CONSTRUCTING THE FUTURE

Throughout this book, you will read about and see pictures of the special people, companies and organizations who have enabled the foundation to work toward its mission and vision. You can also see how the generosity of First Hand donors allowed us to expand while the changing landscape of health care shaped our programs and offerings.

CONSTRUCTING THE FUTURE

FOUNDING FIRST HAND

Beginning in the company’s earliest days, First Hand’s founders knew they wanted to instill a sense of giving and a culture of philanthropy within Cerner. In 1995, after several profitable years, Neal Patterson, Cliff Illig and Jeanne Lillig-Patterson established First Hand as Cerner’s corporate foundation.

“At a leadership level, we were spending a lot of time on culture and traditions. Cerner was spinning fast, adding new products, countries and markets, and we needed something to pull it all back together — we focused on culture. First Hand became one of the strongest possible statements of WHO Cerner is, so we used First Hand as a cornerstone of our culture going forward.” Cliff Illig Cerner and First Hand co-founder

“We defined the mission and said it’s going to be one child at a time; it’s going to be entrepreneurial; and it will take a big commitment from Cerner.” Jeanne Lillig-Patterson First Hand co-founder

11

They wanted Cerner associates to feel a part of the foundation and to truly see the difference their dollars made. With a narrow focus of helping “one child at a time,” First Hand earned its moniker by being “the first hand of help” for many families. Neal always noted that First Hand says “yes” when others say “no.”

“We knew we wanted to be in health care because that was the industry we were born into. And we wanted to help kids because they are our future.”

of Cerner’s culture for the last 25 years. Our associates and business partners remain committed to making a difference for children through health care. The foundation will continue to evolve with Cerner as the company itself enters a new era of intelligent health care. Together, we’re tackling the industry’s toughest challenges.” Marc Naughton, Cerner Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer and Foundation Board Member

12

Cliff Illig

“First Hand has been an integral part

FIRST HAND FOUNDATION

“In defining the purpose of the foundation, we asked the question, ‘Who are we?’ Well, we’re in health care; we’re focused on improving the health of populations; and we see a gap in children’s health. That was a need we could fill. Kids and health care were the drivers.”

CONSTRUCTING THE FUTURE

Jeanne Lillig-Patterson

Jeanne, Neal and Cliff “I am exceedingly proud of the legacy my parents created through their work with First Hand Foundation. They used their experiences and talents to address intractable health care problems for children, families, and communities. It is an honor to carry on these important efforts through my family’s continued involvement with the foundation.” Cortney Patterson Barton, Foundation Advisory Board Member and Neal and Jeanne’s daughter

Jeanne LilligPatterson Jeanne set the tone for the foundation. She led by example, teaching others why it was their responsibility to give back. Many of the foundation’s core beliefs stemmed from her commitment to children and giving them the best opportunities in life. Neal described Jeanne as the “Soul of Cerner.” She fought tirelessly for children and families who could not access the health and care they deserved. “Jeanne was much more than a brilliant visionary — she was our mentor and friend. She was also passionate, driven, strategic, and bold. She advocated for those who needed it most and changed the world for the better.” Melissa Frerking, friend to Jeanne and former First Hand Executive Director

13

“Since our first days, Cerner has sought to articulate a compelling future state for global health care. Neal Patterson spoke of that vision as both a destination and a purpose. First Hand’s work to help children with essential health care needs embodies those first principles. Their 25-year impact is a shining testament to entrepreneurial philanthropy and our belief that health care is too important to stay the same. ” Don Trigg, Cerner President

Neal encouraged the foundation to be bold and to embrace the complex. He especially loved being able to use Cerner technology to help more people through First Hand. He provided incredible foresight — predicting how health care would evolve — and always had a drive for transforming the industry. It’s only natural that the foundation is an extension of this passion.

Neal Patterson

Cliff Illig Cliff’s commitment to the community — giving back to communities around the globe — drove the foundation’s partnerships. He introduced a new philanthropic model through First Hand that connected Cerner associates, business partners and technology to better the lives of children worldwide. Cliff constantly encouraged associates to think bigger while keeping a worldclass experience front of mind. “I had the privilege of working closely with Cliff throughout my career and through various community engagements. He cares deeply about the community and gives back whenever and wherever he can. He also understands the value of an incredible experience for all, especially those who may not have the opportunity to be ‘wowed’ often. You see that in Cerner, First Hand and even Sporting Kansas City.” Tricia Geris, Cerner Senior Director, Global Community & Philanthropy, Events & Services

CONSTRUCTING THE FUTURE

Lisa Shafer (third from left) with Mykah, Jurni and Marlei

“For more than 40 years, Cerner associates have been passionate about building technology to improve health care around the world, while supporting the communities where we live and work. Their work improving lives and supporting families at the global and local levels has been the driving force of Cerner’s success.”

Nathan’s Story As one of First Hand’s earliest case grant recipients, Nathan is making sure his gift lasts a lifetime. He was born with fused fingers on each of his hands which made daily activities a struggle. In 1998, First Hand provided funding for him to receive reconstructive surgery, and he now has two fully-functioning hands. As a boy, this allowed Nathan to play sports, write, paint, play guitar, and ride his bike just like all his friends. As an adult, this enabled him to pursue his dream of becoming a missionary and a nurse, while giving back by volunteering with First Hand and other non-profits.

OUR INITIAL PROGRAMS

Case Grants — the program that started it all The need

How First Hand addressed the need

When necessary medicines, therapies, equipment, surgeries, and more are not covered by insurance they become too costly for families to cover on their own. Finding the best treatment possible could also mean costly travel and lodging.

First Hand created an application-based case grant program with specific funding guidelines and criteria. Families, guardians or social workers can submit an application on behalf of a child requesting funding to cover future medical and treatment-related expenses. The program is available for children receiving care in the United States or through identified trusted global providers.

“[Case grant funding] just lets you focus on your kid. It lets you focus on their recovery instead of worrying.” Tracy, mother of a case grant recipient

“They only came with the clothes that they had on — she had on an oversized adult t-shirt, a diaper and some slippers. He just had on a sleeper. The bags provided items to call their own until we could go to the store the next day to get all they needed.” Kristin, foster parent who received a call in the afternoon from an agency placing a 2-year-old girl and a 7-month-old boy in her care.

Care Kits The need Children who are in the foster system, have been removed from their homes due to abuse, neglect or serious emergencies, whose families live in poverty, or experience other difficult circumstances need personal items to call their own. Delivering Smiles How First Hand addressed the need In partnering with foster agencies, social workers, county departments, hospitals and health systems, and school districts, First Hand provides individual bags of age-appropriate personal items for children when transitioning. Originally, Jeanne named this the Love Bag program because of the sense of love and comfort children felt when receiving one of these kits.

19

In December 2016, First Hand delivered Care Kits to an early childhood center in Kansas City, MO. The fourand five-year-olds sat excitedly in a circle, wearing their pajamas and waiting for the teacher’s instructions. She was off to the side consoling a classmate who was upset that he didn’t own any PJs. His eyes lit up, he grinned from ear to ear, and he had a look of complete joy on his face when he pulled PJs out of his Care Kit. Wasting no time, he ran to the bathroom to immediately change before rejoining his friends!

“Sadly, I think for a lot of children it becomes their way of life to just be without and to do without a lot of things. So to be given a bag that is full of items that they need...I just have to believe it’s an overwhelming feeling.” Linda, volunteer

“We are fortunate to have a fantastic partnership with Cerner in the Malvern/Chester County, Pennsylvania region. Cerner associates are very supportive of our work and our patients. FIRST HAND FOUNDATION

When Cerner acquired Siemens Health Services in 2015, the community of Malvern, Pennsylvania, became a hub of First Hand activity. These associates connected Community Volunteers in Medicine (CVIM) with First Hand’s case grant program. As one of the largest volunteer-based health care providers in Pennsylvania, CVIM provides free coordinated dental and medical care to low-income individuals and families.

ABILITY KC Involvement Ability KC can provide patients necessary therapy, equipment and other programming with First Hand case grant funding. “There are different reasons for therapy. Sometimes children suffer traumatic events and now function three or four years younger than their age. Or, they may have a developmental delay or a genetic disease that requires intensive therapy to reach a milestone. Other times, they need extended therapy in order to live with and function with their situation as they grow. Insurance does not always cover the number of sessions needed or a family may have maxed out their benefits before leaving the hospital. Through First Hand funding, we are able to meet a family’s therapy needs. We would not see the progress that we get to see without this funding.”

“Not only do children receive the occupational, physical or speech therapy they need, but they also benefit from nursing, school readiness, social work, and community reentry services. We use the funds to the fullest extent possible.”

“We treat every child as an individual, developing a unique treatment plan and accommodating unique living situations or different financial situations. First Hand funding is useful because we can apply for equipment, therapy visits, or summer programs — whatever the child truly needs.”

In their words Ruth Houck, Vice President of Finance and Administration “We mobilize surgery teams who can complete the more-straightforward operations in-country. There are complex surgeries, though — cardiac, open heart, neuro, cranial facial — that require a modern medical children’s hospital, and we bring those cases to the US. That’s when lodging, up to months at a time, becomes necessary, and First Hand helps fund these stays. Without this partnership, we would not be able to do that or help these children.” “WPP works with hospitals and organizations who provide discounted services. Our model would not work in any other situation. For that reason, we are good stewards of funds, and we see that same characteristic in First Hand. We are both mission-driven and dedicated to using our funds to help as many children as possible.”

With a strong vision for the foundation’s growth and expansion, Jeanne recognized the need for additional funding and a strong community connection. The easiest first step was to begin where Cerner already had established relationships: the associate base, executives and business partners. In 1996, First Hand hosted its first annual golf tournament and dedicated it as a memorial for an associate’s son.

“Our son was three when he passed away from complications due to a genetic disorder. As an associate in the early years, I knew Jeanne and Neal very well; and, they visited us while we were grieving. That builds a loyalty you can’t get any other way, especially with someone like Neal who was a CEO’s CEO. Jeanne wanted to find a way for us to memorialize Rob. First Hand was already planning the golf tournament in 1996, and she asked if they could add his name to the event. It was tremendously emotional to see the banners with his name on it.” John Travis, Cerner Vice President and Regulatory Strategy Executive

“As a person somewhat in the public eye, I get invited to a lot of events. Mostly I send regrets, but one event I never miss is the First Hand golf tournament. For pure fun plus purpose, it’s probably my single favorite outing of the year.” Neal Patterson, Cerner and First Hand co-founder

25

“The golf tournament became a way to bring Cerner executives, business partners and community members together for a greater cause. Every year something magical happens. The work stops for that day, and we hear from families who received needed funding. The tournament has purpose and meaning.”

During the awards ceremony, they were honoring companies and individuals who’ve supported First Hand over the last 20 years, and I heard Neal say ‘this is just the beginning.’ That has always stuck with me — that was his mindset that there’s always more to do.” “Cerner called us a strategic partner, and we are honored to be considered as such. You have to care about what your clients care about, and they made that easy for us with First Hand. Getting to know Neal and Cliff’s vision for Cerner, we knew their foundation was a brilliant idea. CONSTRUCTING THE FUTURE

First Hand’s founders inspired and encouraged associates to give back in their communities, making a difference where they live and work. Through its volunteer program, the foundation enables associates to donate their time and talent to various causes. First Hand makes this as easy as possible by organizing volunteer events that support the foundation and coordinating with local partner charities and non-profits.

“It pulls us together. We tend to be individual in our tasks. This is an opportunity to get the entire team together to work on one thing for a great cause. We’ve done everything from Love Bags [Care Kits] to renovating a local women’s children’s center. Every Thanksgiving we de-bone turkeys at the Salvation Army. It’s different from what we do day-to-day. It’s different to get up to your elbows and bond while you know you’re helping communities.”

Celebrating Volunteers and Giving Back To celebrate volunteers and promote volunteerism, Cerner hosts an annual Volunteer Week that is organized by First Hand. The foundation sets up numerous events with partner charities during the week and encourages associates to donate their time helping out. This has become a worldwide celebration with associates throughout the US and in the UK, India, Australia, Canada, and other parts of Europe coordinating their own local events.

Associates in all Cerner locations have a desire to make their communities better. How they give, who they give to and what they support differ based on their local needs. Opportunities to give back across the United States are not the same as those in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, the Middle East, and India.

The goal of First Hand’s global giving programs is to maximize the foundation’s impact by providing critical funding and meaningful volunteer opportunities. To do so, First Hand partners with mission-driven, like-minded organizations in local communities. The foundation coordinates associate donations and puts together volunteer events. First Hand has established partnerships and collects associate donations in Canada, Australia and the UK. India, as a nation, has determined that 2% of a company’s profits must go toward Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives. Because of this stipulation and by having the second largest associate base, Cerner has a dedicated First Hand team in this country. Read more about India’s programs on page 65.

Involvement Associate donations in Canada have supported Childhood Cancer Canada with the purchase of tablets for children to remain connected with family and friends during treatment or while in medical isolation. These tablets, along with items such as a teddy bear and books, are provided in an EmPower Pack for children newly diagnosed with cancer. Childhood Cancer Canada is dedicated to fighting pediatric cancer and works to improve the lives of children with cancer and their families.

CONSTRUCTING THE FUTURE

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “Research shows a strong connection between healthy behaviors and academic achievement (e.g., grades, standardized tests, graduation rates, attendance). Healthy students are better learners, and academic achievement bears a lifetime of benefits for health. However, youth risk behaviors, such as physical inactivity, unhealthy dietary behaviors, tobacco use, alcohol use, and other drug use are consistently linked to poor grades and test scores and lower educational attainment.”

While Cerner digitizes and automates health care, the company also invests in building healthy populations and communities through the use of technology. It naturally follows for the foundation to develop health and wellness programming focused on identification, education and prevention.

The foundation developed a wellness screenings program for elementary children by providing a complete head-to-toe screening with parental consent. An important area of focus is in high-need schools as defined by homelessness rate, being a Title I school and the free and reduced lunch percentage, among other criteria. If a child fails a portion of the screening, he/ she receives a referral for follow-up care.

The foundation also supports each child with education about healthy habits.

“In just 20 minutes a student will have his/her health status evaluated with a report for the parents to follow up with a physician, if necessary. I am so happy to share that every single one of my students that failed their vision screening this year now has glasses!” Kelly, RN, school nurse in Liberty 53 School District (MO)

Tatyana (age 9) Tatyana participated in the free wellness screenings First Hand offered at her elementary school. During the screening, the team discovered several dental issues and referred her for additional follow-up. First Hand helped facilitate Tatyana’s appointment with a trusted dental partner who discovered she needed seven cavities filled, a stainless-steel cap and oral surgery to remove an erupted tooth. First Hand funded the five-hour surgery that restored Tatyana’s dental health and smile.

“Through early identification and connections to care, the foundation’s wellness screening program is closing the gaps in health care for children. I’m proud of the work we are doing to help children live up to their full health potential. Eye exams and trips to the dentist are things we may take for granted, but they make a huge difference for children. Students need to be able to see the front of the room, hear a teacher’s instruction and be pain-free to learn. By identifying potential health issues and connecting students to care, the foundation is a valued partner for schools across Kansas City.” Mollie Robinson, RN, BSN, Foundation Senior Operations Manager

“For almost two decades, Cerner was automating the capacity to produce care across the globe. We all understand you can’t fix health care with this effort alone. You must go after the demand for care and focus on prevention. It’s no surprise that the work happening inside Cerner influenced the foundation.” Cliff Illig

Healthe Foundations — Healthy Lifestyle Program The need As teenagers, students begin to make their own decisions about what to eat, their activity level and other lifestyle choices. Many may not understand how their decisions today can impact and shape their futures.

How First Hand addressed the need First Hand developed a healthy lifestyle program for high school students composed of an in-classroom curriculum, online and group work, and a personal assessment. The program addresses preventable diseases and conditions, showing students how their food and drink consumption, lifestyle habits — both health and non-health related — and activities affect their overall health and wellness. Initially, the program focused on obesity.

How the program has grown This program began in the greater Kansas City metro area and has expanded to other parts of the United States. The program is free for schools to adopt and now offers online training and materials in a virtual environment for teachers.

The program helps us frame the work in health care so that students can envision a career in this field.”

“Teachers are hungry for more and want to prepare their students for dealing with conflict and building healthy relationships. They’re finding that they can incorporate the First Hand health curricula and it reinforces what they’re teaching.” “When students are demonstrating poor behavior, they’re still communicating. If the social and emotional learning that First Hand offers is integrated into the everyday classroom, it’s much more beneficial and apt to carry through. “Jeanne’s vision to institute a wellness center here has brought us much more than she even anticipated. Her compassion and generosity have made her dream fully realized. Our diversified community has benefited exponentially as the center has educated the people on the value of physical and spiritual health. We have grown stronger and healthier as a community which was always her goal. I am so thankful that I was able to know and love her.” Fr. Jeff Stephan, Pastor, St. Sabina

Healthe Communities — Wellness Center The need Adopting healthy behaviors can prevent or reduce chronic disease and health issues regardless of age. Research shows that adults in low-income communities are less like to meet physical activity guidelines and often face barriers like location, cost and language spoken.

How First Hand addressed the need First Hand established the Wellness Center at St. Sabina Parish in Belton, MO, to offer health navigation and fitness and healthy lifestyle classes. The center caters to an underserved population where suburban sprawl intersects a rural community. Participants have an average age of 64. Many are non-native English speakers, and many are raising grandchildren. The Center focuses on advocacy and whole-family services. Certified health coaches display unconditional positive regard for their clients and a belief in their capacity for change. This promotes health and wellness and enhances overall wellbeing. Certified fitness instructors offer fitness classes to participants at all levels. Advocacy appointments meet people where they are on their health journey and address the social determinants of health. The Center’s programs are offered free of charge and with support for Spanish-speaking participants.

“I didn’t know where to begin to improve my health. Too many problems, and I didn’t have the time or energy to fight the battle. I felt overwhelmed. Success didn’t come overnight, but I learned how to make changes that led to steady progress and improvement. The Wellness Center has been with me every step of the way, my lifeline. My wife and I have our three grandkids, and I need all the energy I can get to keep up with them! Now, everyone in our house is healthier.” Paul Gray, Wellness Center member

Riverport 2006-2007

With a thriving annual golf tournament connecting Cerner business partners with the foundation, First Hand wanted to bring more community members into the family. Prior to the current masquerade ball, First Hand hosted a biannual gala comprised of a sit-down dinner with an auction. Jeanne, as with most things in her life, wanted something unique, different, FUN, and very successful and asked her team to host “a party, not a rubber chicken dinner.”

64 FIRST HAND FOUNDATION

The World Health Organization defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

CONSTRUCTING THE FUTURE

EXPANDING OUR DEFINITION OF HEALTH

In the early 2000s, Cerner transitioned into becoming a health company focused on preventive, proactive and predictive health. First Hand made a similar shift, working towards creating healthy communities. The foundation also expanded how it defines health, developing and enhancing programs that address a child’s overall wellbeing. This includes looking at social determinants of health — housing, employment, transportation and more — that influence access to health and care options.

India School Health Program Cerner’s second-largest population of associates is in India, specifically in Bangalore. The government mandates that corporations donate a percentage of profits to a non-profit, non-governmental organization (NGO) and Cerner contributes through its foundation. First Hand partners with local funders to distribute associate donations where they are most needed ensuring alignment with the foundation’s mission and vision.

Lavan’s Story Lavan suffers from Crohn’s, an inflammatory bowel disease that causes abdominal pain, fatigue, weight loss, and malnutrition. India’s government-provided health care system does not cover Crohn’s care which includes regular, repeating sessions that became too expensive for Lavan’s family to fund. In back-to-back years, First Hand helped Lavan follow his dreams in school and Taekwondo by funding his needed treatment.

65

Two such funders include Karuna Trust and Round Table India. Karuna Trust runs several primary health centers and funds initiatives focused on rural development, education and livelihood improvement. Round Table India is passionate about eradicating illiteracy by funding school infrastructure initiatives and other education-related projects for underprivileged children. In partnership with NGOs, First Hand has established a comprehensive school health program for children in Bangalore and rural parts of India. Elements of this program address multiple social determinants of health and improve access to health and care.

Sanitation

Wellness Screenings

Care Kits

Hygiene and health are intimately related, and children deserve safe, clean and sanitary conditions at school. Through the foundation’s programming, students have access to new restrooms, clean drinking water and nutritional supplements. Cerner associates also often donate their time volunteering in the schools on projects like painting and beautifying the buildings.

First Hand partners with Karuna Trust to provide free wellness screenings and health education materials to school-aged children. Plus, there is a referral program to fund additional care and child-centric, comprehensive treatment plans to eliminate chronic conditions.

While similar to the Care Kits that First Hand distributes in the United States, the ones distributed in India contain items specific to these children’s needs. Toothbrushes, tongue-cleaners, antiseptic, water bottles, and flip flops are several of the hygiene essentials that many children do not own.

Healthe Perceptions — Social-Emotional Wellness Program The need

How First Hand addressed the need

During their middle school years, children face unprecedented stressors and are developing their social-emotional skills. This is a challenging time for them, their families and their schoolmates. Research finds that schools participating in social-emotional learning programs see, on average, an 11% gain in student achievement. Students who participate in these programs are 24% more likely to have lower levels of stress.

The foundation developed a comprehensive, evidence-based social-emotional wellness program for middle school students and staff that can be customized to the specific school’s needs. It focuses on prevention and education, screening, and connection to care.

All school staff receive professional development tailored to their needs, including topics such as selfcare, de-escalation techniques or how trauma affects the brain.

Schools experience a culture shift toward a positive social-emotional school climate.

Schools who participated in the program saw the average number of behavior incidents per student decrease from 4.7 to 2.5. the average number of days students missed per student drop from 13.08 to 9.08.

Schools are more trauma-informed with teachers who have tools to effectively resolve conflict.

66

Students have access to free social-emotional wellness screenings from a licensed professional.

Children’s health is often influenced by their family’s habits and their environmental surroundings. Through the faith-placed Healthe Communities wellness center, adult parishioners of St. Sabina Catholic Church can receive free wellness screenings with referrals, participate in fitness and nutrition courses, and build camaraderie with friends and neighbors. A parishioner herself, Jeanne noticed the lack of access to care and knowledge of healthy habits in this community and opened this bilingual wellness center to close that gap.

In November 2018, the Camp Fire wildfire ravaged California, becoming the deadliest and most destructive in the state’s history. Adventist Health, a Cerner client, was completely destroyed, leaving around 70 Cerner associates without employment and many without homes. First Hand worked alongside Cerner’s HR and Legal departments to formalize a process to assist them — and those US associates in the future who are affected by declared natural disasters. This new process also allowed fellow associates, community members, Cerner business partners, and First Hand sponsors to donate to the rolling fund.

Celebrating 25 Years of Mission-Driven Work

While much of First Hand has changed in 25 years, the foundation remains committed to building healthy communities. This year 2020, perhaps more than any other, has brought unforeseen challenges and allowed the foundation to be agile and flexible in its operations. Tracy Platt, Cerner Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer and First Hand Board Member, explains, “The last year has created an elevated awareness in our society, regarding the need to advance humanity and join together to positively impact our communities. Small acts of kindness can make a big difference. When our Cerner associates come together, towards a common world-serving purpose, great things happen.” In reality, there is no better way to celebrate First Hand’s 25th anniversary than to kick-off a few new initiatives such as Feeding the Front Lines and Cerner Together!

EFFORTS IN INDIA In partnering with NGOs, First Hand can direct its funds as they are needed throughout India. The efforts still support the foundation’s mission, serving children and enabling them to have a healthy future. In shifting funding in the schools for necessary personal protective equipment and hand sanitizer, students taking their annual exams to graduate were safe and assumed lower risk in the classroom.

CERNER TOGETHER Introduced in 2020, Cerner Together focuses on volunteerism. This program provides an avenue for associates around the world to step up and help their communities. Tracy Platt noted, “By volunteering in our communities and for causes close to our hearts, we can support sustainable change, reduce disparities and help build a better world.” She announced that Cerner would offer volunteer time off to associates to encourage them to get out and make a difference.

CONSTRUCTING THE FUTURE

Cerner associates and community members donated an incredible $161,822 to this initiative. With First Hand’s $30,000 match, 80 restaurants delivered 23,981 meals.

Clinicians, support staff and other health care professionals and first responders worked around the clock caring for patients and saving lives at the outset of the coronavirus pandemic, often putting their own lives in danger. To show support for their efforts, First Hand established Feeding the Front Lines in Kansas City (KS, MO) and Malvern (PA) to provide meals from local restaurants to these essential workers.

STANDING ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS

CONSTRUCTING THE FUTURE

Because I knew you… I’ve been changed for good.

As Cerner associates and First Hand contributors, partners, recipients, friends, and family, we humbly stand on the shoulders of two of health care’s giants. We carry their legacy and love of humanity forward, continuing to close the gaps in health care for children around the world. Jeanne and Neal’s kindness and giving spirit live on in the smiles, laughter and hugs from each and every child and parent who comes in contact with the foundation. “First Hand’s mission comes from the heart. It’s our passion and inspiration. We want to say ‘thank you’ to all of our associates, sponsors and friends who are working together. Together, we are changing the world, and we are doing it one child at a time. Let’s keep the momentum going.” Jeanne Lillig-Patterson

We would like to extend a special thank you to all who have made the last 25 years possible. Your dedication, generosity, support, kindness, and encouragement are invaluable. Looking to the future, let’s focus on the change we can make together in the next 25 years. This is only the beginning! Shanna Adamic, Foundation Executive Director

CONSTRUCTING THE FUTURE

80 FIRST HAND FOUNDATION

The choice to start a foundation was intentional. It’s an incredible legacy envisioned by Jeanne Lillig-Patterson, Neal Patterson and Cliff Illig. The foundation began with one purpose in mind: to support the industry that Cerner knows so well by closing the gaps in health care for children. Today, the foundation continues to live out this vision of creating a world where children, families and communities achieve their full health potential. Looking to the future, the foundation’s work will be even more important as it evolves and expands.

...and has now improved the lives of hundreds of thousands around the world.
