Exit Planning

Kevin Kennedy

As an owner, you spend the majority of your career creating value in your “illiquid” business, which could all be lost without a well-developed plan to monetize and protect this hard earned wealth. Beacon’s CEO, Kevin Kennedy says, “Exiting my private business was the largest financial event of my life I know this is probably true for you too. I founded Beacon to help others gain the knowledge and know how to get through the process more effectively, efficiently, and with less stress. We can help you exit successfully and protect your wealth.” Kevin brings his expertise in successful exiting to Beacon with a customized, proven process. This process realizes your wealth is at risk, recognizes the need for objective, holistic advice and provides you with a written plan to understand your various options. Our paths put you in control by determining: • The owner’s objective • When to leave • How much money is needed • Who to transfer/sell business to • How to increase business value • Exiting Options • How to minimize/eliminate taxes • How to protect family wealth

Session Descriptions Tuesday June 14, 2016 8:45 - 9:45AM

Succession Planning

Joseph Bazzano

Succession planning focuses on the “human” capital with management and associates. Ideally, this is a continuous process of moving and developing the next generation of chosen performers from management, into ownership, and onto leadership. This requires time, training, evaluation, coaching and stretching your associates. You must prepare the business to operate successfully and profitably without the present owners. Succession is the transfer of management and leadership from one generation to the next generation in a company. It is a continuous ongoing process of identifying and developing associates to prepare them for advancement through training, mentoring, and stretching their responsibilities. This process of “continuous succession®,” uses education and development to understand the company’s systems and culture with a focus of growing management and creating leadership. A company’s true asset is their “human” capital and it takes time to develop associates into managers and the life experience needed to mature into leaders. In this session, Joe will provide you valuable information about how to create a succession plan.

The Power of Habit

Shawn Feurer

Get ready for a better understanding of how habit plays an integral role in transforming our businesses, our employees, and our lives. 40% of your daily actions are not actual conscious decisions but are instead just part of your daily habits. Changing your habits can change your life. Based on the work of award winning New York Times author, Charles Duhigg and his book, “The Power of Habit, you’ll find out: • why habits exist and how they can be changed • why some people and companies struggle to change, despite years of trying • why others seem to remake themselves overnight. You will leave with a better understanding and insight on the keys to daily exercise, weight loss, raising exceptional children, becoming more productive, building revolutionary companies, and achieving all of the success you desire.

EnerBankUSA Welcome Reception at Scottsdale’s Top Golf

Please join us for a fun night of food, networking, games & golf sponsored by EnerBankUSA! Meet us in the lobby at 6:30PM. Busses will leave Top Golf at 9PM (if you need to leave early) and at 10PM. There are nine games guests can choose from including TopGolf, the most popular game, in which players score points based on which target they hit or get closest to. The course is set with targets at different increments starting at four targets at 25 yards and going all the way to the back trench at 215 yards. Some of the games are progressive, meaning players start off aiming at the closest targets and work their way to the back targets. While a couple of the games are aimed at practiced golfers, many of the games are designed for both experienced players and those who have never picked up a club to be able to play at the same time. On the bottom level of the facility is a lounge area with pool tables, couches, and TVs with Xbox Kinect games in which guests can control the animated games, such as golf, using their body without the need for a controller. The second level, which also houses the main entrance, includes a bar and seating area as well as a spacious banquet room and fully equipped kitchen. The top level has a bar and a patio that looks out to the mountains.

How To Select Top Sales People

Paul Green

Hiring salespeople is often a contractor’s worst task. How do you know if they’ll actually sell? Will they be able to learn your products/services? Can they sell high ticket services? Many owners get sold by the charmer only to waste time and money to find out that charm was all they had! The truth is that past behavior predicts future behavior and Paul Green is an expert in how to find that out. During the Owners Summit, he’ll conduct a workshop to help you hire the top performing salesperson you are looking for. On completion of the presentation, you will be able to: 1. Distinguish between effective and ineffective interview questions 2. Explain how to conduct a structured interview for a sales job 3. Gain a behavioral predictor 4. Demonstrate a variety of interviewing skills, such as asking comfort questions, tolerating silence, taking “quote notes,” “clipping” the rambling candidate, asking for contrary evidence and ending the interview in a respectful, professional way. 5. Explain how to score interview answers

Managing Sales People

Dave MacLean

Managing a sales team can be hard. Do you manage the numbers, the behaviors or the results? And to make it even more difficult, add Millenials to the mix who have different attitudes and expectations. Sales professionals are often ambitious and driven, and they value freedom and independence in their jobs. However, their motivation can rapidly fall if you don’t make your expectations clear, or if you fail to communicate performance goals and metrics. Some salespeople may want you to give them high-level objectives, but not to tell them how to do their jobs, especially if you lack sales experience. So, you’re likely to clash with people if you try to micromanage them. On the other hand, leave them without a manager and you’ll often see productivity drop. Dave MacLean from Brothers Services has been managing salespeople in his role as General Manager and will share his secrets to effective sales management with you during this session.

What HR Laws Mean for the Small Business Owner

Marilyn Macfarlane

As a company that is growing, you hire people. These people are employees. Whether you have 1 or 10,000 employees, HR laws protect their employment rights and your employer rights. But there so many HR laws - and they always seem to be changing and seemingly not to the employer’s favor - not to mention that federal and state laws are not always the same. It can be overwhelming to stay compliant and in control of your business. But there is help. Let’s break down the laws, what they mean and how (and if) they apply to you. At the end you will receive a guide to help you as a yellow brick road to employment law for your workplace.

CCN Steering Committee The CCN Steering Committee was originally started in 2001 by CCN’s founder Richard Kaller who decided it would be prudent to have a group of involved members in place for continuity and feedback. Since then, the Steering Committee has met after each conference to offer feedback and insight from the members’ perspective to CCN management. The committee does not make policy but rather offers opinions, ideas and insight to CCN management so that members’ needs are kept in the forefront of CCN decision-making. From time to time, the committee has arbitrated disputes between members and CCN management assuring a fair and balanced consideration of all factors. Committee members are selected based on their commitment level to CCN and to reflect a representative sample of various trades, sizes and geographical areas. 6476 Sligo Mill Road, Takoma Park, Maryland, 20912 301-891-0999 www.contractors.net PAYMENT AUTHORIZATION: I wish to make my payments to CCN through its Pre-Authorization Payment Program. I hereby authorize my bank or credit card company to make my payment for the total due today and any scheduled payments. I agree to pay a fee of $50, as well as any other charges allowable by law for any EFT, check, or credit card charge not honored by my bank or credit card company. REGISTRATION and CANCELLATION POLICY: Since we have implemented the Diamond level, we have been selling out all of the boot camps, which is not a surprise. The problem is that some Diamond level and Platinum members are not getting a chance to send their people to the training. Some Diamond level members are taking spots and then cancelling last minute, which is unfair to other members. For this reason, we are implementing a policy to curb these actions. If you cancel prior to 30 days of the start of the event, there is no penalty and all deposits are refunded (Diamond doesn’t have a deposit). If between 30 days and 14 days of the start of the event, there is a $250 fee for each registrant (regardless of membership level). If the cancellation is within 14 days of event, there is a 40% of the Platinum price penalty.
