The “Shrine of Democracy” attracts nearly 3 million people annually to see the carved 60-ft sculptures of Presidents George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln representing the first 130 years of United States history. ATTRACTIONS HELPFUL INFO
The world’s largest mountain carving in progress honors the North American Indians. Located on Highway 16/385 in the southern Black Hills, the complex includes museums, a cultural education center, gift shops and a restaurant. Bus rides, guided tours available. Open year-round.
Devils Tower National Monument
Designated in 1906, the nation’s first national monument is actually the core of a volcano, and is sacred to tribes with connections to the Black Hills. At 865 feet high with 7.4 miles of paths, it offers great rock climbing and hiking. The monument is perhaps best remembered for its prominence in the motion picture Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Open year round.

Badlands National Park
Seventy five miles east of Rapid City, the Badlands contain one of the world’s richest fossil beds. Ancient mammals such as the rhino, horse and saber-toothed cat once roamed here. The park’s 244,000 acres protect mixed-grass prairie where bison, bighorn sheep, prairie dogs, and black-footed ferrets live today.

Wind Cave National Park
Hidden beneath the rolling prairie of the southern Black Hills is one of the world’s longest caves. Named for barometric winds at its entrance, this complex labyrinth of passages contains the rare formation called boxwork. Located 11 miles north of Hot Springs off Highway 385.

Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway
One of the oldest canyons in the West, Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway is located in the northern portion of the Black Hills National Forest. The canyon spans 20 miles along a scenic State and National Forest Scenic Byway. Less than a mile wide, the canyon is ‘always close, always upward,’ and draws more than one million visitors annually.
