London Bridge
Designed in 1799, the bridge welcomed its first pedestrian traffic in 1831 in London, England. However, by 1924, the London Bridge began to quietly sink into the River Thames’s as it had not been designed to withstand the 20th century traffic.
In 1967, the City of London Corporation placed the bridge up for sale. Lake Havasu City’s innovative founding father, Robert P. McCulloch placed the winning bid in 1968 at $2,460,000.
LONDON BRIDGE
Each granite block of the bridge was numbered, disassembled and shipped through the Panama Canal to Long Beach, California then transported through the desert to Lake Havasu City, Arizona.
It was reconstructed over Bridgewater Channel in the exact same order as it had stood over the River Thames and rededicated on October 10,1971. Visit golakehavasu.com/ london-bridge to find out more about the London Bridge.
See the London Bridge Live!
Check out the live webcams at golakehavasu.com to see the London Bridge and the Bridgewater Channel. Make sure to pick up a self-guided London Bridge tour pamphlet at the Visitor Information Center (see page 1).

Wildlife of the Lower Colorado River Region
This stretch of the Lower Colorado River region winds between the Mojave and Sonoran deserts through two national wildlife refuges. The Havasu National Wildlife Refuge borders Lake Havasu to the north and encompasses 37,515 acres. The Bill Williams River National Wildlife Refuge lies to the south of Lake Havasu, near Parker Dam, and includes 6,100 acres.
The Havasu Refuge sits in the migratory flight path of birds and also includes Topock Gorge, a 20-mile stretch of one of the last undeveloped sections of the Lower Colorado River. The Bill Williams Refuge is one of the last locations to find native cottonwood and willow forests in this area
The refuges welcome more than:
• 355 species of birds, including the rarely seen bald eagle
• 192 aquatic species, including 23 species of dragonflies
• 57 species of mammals, including bighorn sheep and burros
• 41 reptiles and amphibians, including the desert tortoise

Birdwatching
Numerous bird species are found in and around Lake Havasu City, especially near the shoreline, within the many coves of Lake Havasu and along the adjacent sections of the Lower Colorado River.
Some of the species in the area include:
• Anna’s Hummingbird
• Great Blue Heron
• Great Horned Owl
• Vermillion Flycatcher
• Costa’s Hummingbird
• Great Egret
• Western Grebe
• Lesser Black-Billed Gull
The Bill Williams Refuge is located 23 miles south of Lake Havasu City. In 2011, it was designated as an Audubon Society Globally Significant Important Bird Area due to the spotting of a rare Nutting’s Flycatcher.
Lake Havasu Lighthouses
Located over 200 mi from the nearest ocean, Lake Havasu City is home to more lighthouses than any other city in the country. Each of the 28 picturesque lighthouses is a U.S. Coast Guardapproved beacon and navigational aid for boaters on Lake Havasu. Among the replicas, 13 are accessible by land, while the rest can be enjoyed from exploring the lake by watercraft.
All are built, installed and maintained by the Lake Havasu Lighthouse Club. For more details visit golakehavasu.com/ lighthouses. For information about a lighthouse boat tour visit golakehavasu.com/guided-tours.
