ABOUT US: ARZU STUDIO HOPE

ARZU, which means “hope” in Dari, is an innovative model of social entrepreneurship that helps Afghan women weavers and their families break the cycle of poverty by providing them steady income and access to education and healthcare by sourcing and selling the rugs they weave. SOCIAL IMPACT Job Creation: ARZU implements its programs at the household level, producing immediate, visible positive change in the lives of women and their families. The incomes derived from these jobs, and the skills and knowledge gained, become the catalyst to seed longterm transformation. Worker Benefits: In addition to sustainable economic empowerment, ARZU also provides worker benefits, including access to literacy classes and healthcare for all direct participants. Community Impact: The greater community benefits from ARZU’s development projects, including alternative livelihood training and apprenticeship programs, Women’s Community Centers and Gardens, new housing for displaced refugees, and broad-based healthcare workshops.

ABOUT US: PEACE CORD®

PEACE CORD® is a stylish parachute cord bracelet handmade by Afghan women. Using fair labor practices, Peace Cord® creates employment opportunities for artisans and supports the empowerment of women worldwide. Peace Cord® is an economic opportunity available to almost any Afghan; even the feeble or the ill, thereby filling a niche that many aid programs and employment projects fail to reach. OUR STORY In 2010, ARZU STUDIO HOPE founder Connie K. Duckworth spent a week visiting Afghanistan, searching for a way to engage with Afghan women. This visit inspired ARZU’s newest product initiative- Peace Cord®. To date, this project has created 150 jobs for women now working outside the home for the first time at ARZU’s Women’s Community Centers.

“Peace Cord ® is a constant reminder of a dream of a more peaceful world and you know you’re helping someone else.”-DANIELLE KYRILLOS, The Today Show F EAT UR ED I N
