udhiff As a structural principle, active bending is not a new concept. Already existed in primal nomadic cultures, elastic bending was used to create small living environments out of lightweight and elastic materials. Bending-active structures are often designed by following either a behaviour-based, geometrybased, or integrated approach. The Mesopotamian Mudhiffs are referred to the first category which is traditional, intuitive use of bending during the construction process and relies only on hands-on experience regarding the deformation behaviour of
the used building material. The Mudhif or the guest house is a sample of elastically formed arch and shell structures. The empiric development of construction methods based on the elasticity of their building materials predominately resulted in similar structures. The Mudhif cane huts in Ma’dan (South Iraq) are permanent structures using reed bundles that are first vertically fixed into bucket foundations and later connected at the top to form elastically bent arches.
