CONTRIBUTORS For our 10th anniversary, we’re shaking things up a bit. Instead of asking our contributors to give a bio, we asked them to answer the questions: Why Dress to Kill? Why is it important to you?

Malina Corpandean Photographer

“DTK is an amazing platform for the Canadian fashion industry, and I have been very fortunate to count myself among its collaborators. From its inception, Sylvain knew that magic always happens when people are free to create, and he encouraged us to do just that. The results are amazing, truly a unique expression of the many talented people who work in the Canadian fashion industry today. I hope to be part of that process for many years to come.”

Amandine Navarro Videographer

“For me, DTK is more than just an editorial magazine that offers a pure vision of the fashion industry by proposing projects worthy of major magazines. It’s also a family of unique artists who have been chosen for an obvious reason: talent. I am so honoured to be part of this fantastic team.”

MALINA CORPANDEAN

ANNIE HORTH

AMANDINE NAVARRO

Annie Horth Stylist

“No matter what anyone says, there’s still nothing like the experience of reading a physical magazine. DTK is independent, so it’s not there to promote anything else other than fashion trends and to keep the reader informed on local and international cultural events. Congrats on your 10-year anniversary!”

Amy Lu Stylist

“Originally from Toronto but now based in Los Angeles, I have been contributing to Dress to Kill since its early days. I adore clothes, and I love storyboarding and styling editorials; it is my passion. I believe beautiful images can inspire beauty in others and I’m always on the hunt to figure out how to make people feel good through fashion.”

Marie-Ève Venne Lifestyle Editor

“DTK has the right kind of madness, and it takes a lot of it to refuse to do commercial stuff in such an unstable industry! But mostly, I love it because they allow me to cover subjects that I am passionate about. They give me a voice, without thinking that any idea is too crazy. They are not afraid to shake things up and it is still very exciting after all these years!”

Steven Turpin Hair & Makeup-Artist

STEVEN TURPIN

“In the words of Vivienne Westwood, ‘Fashion is very important. It is life-enhancing and, like everything that gives pleasure, it is worth doing well.’ This is the reason for DTK: a showcase of Canadian artists doing fashion well. This magazine is a fantastic platform that celebrates incredible artists in such a unique way, and I’m so proud to be a part of its fabric. Here’s to keeping fashion alive! Congrats on 10 years, and here’s to a bright future!”

Editor’s Note

We must have been too enthusiastic by the return of the sun, as we have not one but two cover stories this season. We are excited to celebrate our Canadian actresses and share their inspiring stories with you. We also don’t have just one profile on a successful businesswoman – we have three. And we have covered five continents in our travel destinations. And yes, we did feature those Versace boots twice. Summer should be full of life and high energy; perhaps it’s time for a little excess. With the sun and the wind around you, don’t you feel freer? Summer is beautiful, and it’s the perfect time to take more liberty and push the limits! Or at least push our own. Let’s provoke new thought, try a new routine, make a new friend, and open ourselves to new ideas. We have exciting summer content, from our California-glam road trip and our colourful summer looks, to our strong cast, like the powerful Frances Coombe or the delightful Harlow Monroe (who you might not know of yet, but she’s a transgender model who is taking the world by storm!). Sabrina Rinaldi will inspire you to be beach ready, sharing her passion for beauty, and this issue’s Carte Blanche features genius designer Fausto Puglisi. Summer with un brin de folie: you can read by the pool, enjoy the urban festivity, or, if you are lucky, explore the world. Summer is an adventure itself, whether it is a period of introspection, or a busy social life, it is a time to appreciate novelties and open your heart to others. Bravo to all our talents for another amazing edition of DTK! Enjoy, xx

PRECIOUS COLOURS

FLOWER GIRL THE VAN CLEEF & ARPELS PRIMROSE IS ONE OF EIGHT JEWELLERY WATCHES INTRODUCED THIS YEAR IN THE JARDIN COLLECTION. When the occasion calls for a little black dress or an evening gown, you’re going to need a high-level accessory if you want to add a pop of colour. This season’s jewellery watches go beyond the staid diamond, adding rubies, sapphires, tsavorites, and even exotic Paraiba tourmalines to the mix, guaranteed to make you stand out in a sea of black dresses and tuxedos. Diamonds are still an essential black-tie accoutrement, but this year they are bigger, more creatively applied or cut into fancy shapes. Here are six high-end jewellery watches that will make you want to hold your champagne glass in your left hand. By Carol Besler

CULTURE GEORGIA MAY JAGGER

True

BLOOD

Talent, creativity, and audacity run in the veins of Jade Jagger, daughter of the mythical ‘70s power couple Bianca and Mick Jagger. Jade quickly became a superstar herself after her studies and career success in the art field. She founded Jade Inc. in 1996, adding remarkable jewellery designer to her growing resume of talents. She loves to take on challenges, partaking in interior design, clothing design, and artistic direction for a variety of projects around the world, including India, one of the countries that most inspires her. Now, she is reinventing herself one more time with her newfound passion for photography.

JAMES JAGGER

MARY CHARTERIS

By Stéphane Le Duc When did you realize you had a creative side? I was knocking on my mother’s womb… I could hear Andy Warhol, just beyond, saying, “Jade do come out - I need some assistance,” (laughs). Is Andy Warhol somebody you admired? It’s seems almost a cliché to say yes, but he was definetly a great artist. That whole scene was definetly cooking up my juices for the creative world. There was such openess at that time about what art could be. You have to remember, it was a change when modern art became loud. We were already modernizing ourselves, but Andy emphasized that. I think I saw that, even as a young kid at five or six. How did you come up with the idea of making jewels?

I started out in sculpture and painting, and I was doing a lot of decorative arts, gold leafing, grounding pigments, and so on. Then, I just felt that maybe along my fish slicing friend like Damien Hirst, that I did not quite fit in. I looked around for different mediums and something that fulfilled the things that I loved, like my love of colour, my love of sculpture, my love of decoration, and then I chose jewellery. Fifteen to twenty years

16

later, I don’t know if I feel so keen about it anymore. Maybe because of the things I loved about it, like its uniqueness, is starting to become much more mass-marketed or mass-produced, or maybe I just don’t like the competition.

There is a raw side in the way you design your jewels. Yes,

it’s meant to be a little bit rough. I buy the stones in the rocks. Sometimes, I dont know what’s inside. It’s like gambling. I buy the rubies, the sapphires, the emeralds, and I find the gems inside it. I like to carve it with the craftsmen and feel the stone. It’s not about perfection – it’s about some imperfection, some lusters, some patina, and some life: the life of the stone, the life it had before you owned it.

JADE JAGGER

–IT’S ABOUT SOME imperfection, SOME LUSTERS, some PATINA, AND SOME LIFE : THE LIFE OF THE stone,THE LIFE IT HAD BEFORE YOU OWNED IT. —Jade Jagger

Your new interest in photography happened by coincidence?

Yes. I was invited by Jean-Baptiste Pauchard of Studio57 Gallery in Paris to do a photography exhibition, and I foolishly said yes, of course! And [I] said, “In six or eight weeks, I can produce [for] you a huge exhibition,” and then I went home and said, “Shit…Why did I say yes?” Slowly, I got my head around [it], and I knew I was capable of doing it, and it was a good challenge. I think all artists like to be a little bit up against something because even when you are producing your own collection and it’s your own company, you need the challenge.

You take pictures of your friends? Yes - famous or not: like my brother James, my sister Georgia May, or Noel Gallagher (from Oasis) just putting on his straight face, and some invisible people who just wanted to take their clothes off… I was lucky to find that place in my house that just had this amazing light and just did the work for me in a way. They were all very intimite and very personal. We are friends, so we had to get into it. It was a very interesting, kind of very personal road - very emotional. I did not want to do fashion photography; I wanted to do art photography. Do you think you enjoyed the process of photography enough to keep doing it? Yes, definitely. I enjoyed it very much

because there are so many people I have met or that I’d like to take the pictures of. I really like to go deep into people. I am quite intense into people’s character, and to find that little moment when you giggle or you bring out the emotion is quite exciting.

Life is a circle, so do you think you might go back after that project to painting and sculpture? Yes, I think it’s time for me

to take that back. I won’t stop jewellery, but creating art will be part of my life. www.studio57gallery.com

MARRAKESH T

Anyone who has been to Marrakesh will tell you the city isn’t as much a destination as it is an experience. Morocco’s ‘Jewel of the South’ is certainly that - a treasure in the midst of chaos.

© CARLYLE ROUTH

he first taste of Marrakesh might leave you with sensory overload: scooters whizzing by, shop keepers ushering you into their store, or snake charmers ready to place their pet around your neck. All of this is happening against a backdrop of sandy pinks and peaches, streets lined with roses, and the intoxicating smell of Moroccan bread. Winding paths and alleyways are decorated with embellished doors and stucco walls. Enter through one of those doors and chances are you’ll walk into a Riad (a traditional Moroccan house or palace) covered in tiles, tapestries, fountains, and more. The luxury that lies within the walls of the city, from visiting the newly opened YSL Museum and Gardens, to spending a day getting pampered at a hammam, or even glamping in the Sahara Desert, will have you dreaming of this enchanting place long after your visit is over.

Where to eat

Nomad

Previously an old carpet store, Nomad is the second instagram-able Medina retreat by Kamal Laftimi. You’ll find ‘Modern Moroccan’ cuisine here, as well as international fare with a Moroccan twist. Cool off with one of their many juices or smoothies while enjoying the view that looks over famed spice square Rahba Lakdima and the Atlas Mountains. www.nomadmarrakech.com

Le Jardin

After navigating the ancient labyrinth that is the Marrakesh Medina, you’ll no doubt work up an appetite. Enter Le Jardin, an emerald tiled oasis and retreat from a day of bargaining and shopping. Mint tea is a staple here and enjoyable even on the warmer days. Start off sampling the traditional Moroccan salads and work your way to one of the many drool-worthy tajines. www.lejardinmarrakech.com

After a day at the world famous Djemaa el Fenna square (which is only five minutes from the hotel), you’ll need a little tranquility to return to. Relaxation is not hard to come by at El Fenn, with its manicured gardens, library, yoga classes, painting kits, and a visit to the boutique filled with local artisan treasures. End your day at the cocktail bar, where you can enjoy a perfectly crafted Negroni while sitting by the fire.

Comptoir Darna

Driving up to Comptoir Darna, you will notice a change in atmosphere. Designer stores are on every corner, and bouncers greet world travellers and Marrakesh’s in-crowd at the doors of stylish restaurants and nightclubs. Comtoir Darna is no different; it’s a two-level villa, serving Moroccan style dinner, creative cocktails, and an impressive lineup of belly dancers and musicians. www.comptoirmarrakech.com

Le Churchill

Once you have walked through an entrance of lush gardens, passed a myriad of marble and tiles, and walked through one of Marrakesh’s most elegant hotels, you’ll find a smoky, dark, jazz-filled bar called Le Churchill. The hotel has hosted Winston Churchill himself, and it’s no secret why. Luxury is evident in every detail of the bar, from the carefully-crafted cocktails, to the leather studded walls and leopard-print fringed chairs. MACHNEYUDA

33 Rue Majorelle

Located across the street from famed Jardin Majorelle, 33 Rue Majorelle is a concept store like no other in Marrakesh. The store represents 90-plus independent artisans, selling everything from tea sets to leather bags. www.33ruemajorelle.com

© CARLYLE ROUTH

Visit Jardin Majorelle and the YSL Museum The Jardin Majorelle is one of Morocco’s most popular attractions, and one not to be missed. The garden, which is as serene as it is glamorous, was created and cared for by French painter Jacque Majorelle (1886-1962) and later purchased by designer Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Berger. Walk through 12 acres of soft green cactus-filled gardens which are complimented by splashes of bright yellow, coral, and that infamous Majorelle blue. Next door to the gardens you’ll find the new addition of the YSL Museum. To say Marrakesh left an imprint on Saint Laurent is an understatement; the location’s impact is indisputable as you walk through the small but magical collection of photos, campaigns, muses, videos, and runway outfits of the designer’s past.

HAMMAM Beldi Country Club and Spa

www.jardinmajorelle.com

One of the most popular and traditional ways to unwind in Morocco is by visiting a hammam, a Moroccan bath house. The spa at Beldi is itself a small douar (a typical Moroccan village), with intimate spaces and a serene atmosphere. Separated by gender and wearing nothing more than a small cloth around your waist, you’ll be greeted by an attendant who will pour warm water over you, along with salon noir (a special soap made with olive oil), and you’ll be left to steam and soak for several minutes. A special glove is used to scrub the entire body, followed by a spa treatment of your choice. http://beldicountryclub.com/en/spa

© CARLYLE ROUTH © CARLYLE ROUTH

If you’re looking for a once-in-a-lifetime experience in Morocco, this is it. You’ll spend the first day winding through the Atlas Mountains, the scenery drastically changing as each hour passes. Upon arrival you are greeted at sunset by your desert camp team. Follow the path of Moroccan rugs to one of the eight tented suites, each boasting the luxuries and decor of a boutique hotel. A mouth-watering feast of tajines, fresh bread, olives, and wine is accompanied by a warm fire, traditional Berber music, and a sky full of stars. The sunrise isn’t to be missed, as it peaks up over the sand dunes, and you enjoy a breakfast of yogurt, crepes, shakshouka, and more. It’s a great way to start a fully-packed day of camel trekking, visiting a nomadic family, lunching and napping in a desert oasis under the afternoon sun, sand boarding, and ending your day trekking up a mountainous sand dune to watch the sunset over the Sahara. On your way back to Marrakesh, you’ll have the incredible opportunity to visit a Moroccan rug showroom and learn about the different female Berber tribes that make these works of art and even attempt a hand weaving lesson of your own. www.thebeldicollection.com

ICONIC Modernization

BELSTAFF Creative Director Delphine Ninous dishes on the first Canadian store and evolving a heritage brand. By Brenna Dixon Belstaff was founded in 1924 in Longton, the southern district of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire, England. The innovative brand was the first company to fabricate waxed cotton for waterproof motorcycle jackets. Now, fast-forward nearly a hundred years later to the opening of the first Belstaff Canadian store in Yorkville Village, Toronto. The refined boutique sits in a modernized space with elements imported from Europe that ensure the brand DNA remains prominent and honours the Belstaff aesthetic. This is an exciting expansion for the brand that continues to be a pioneer in the fashion industry. In order to stay relevant in a constantly changing marketplace, the evolution of creative vision is paramount. The vision is the responsibility of the creative director, who channels the brand aesthetic and is essentially accountable for making something so archival modern again. Delphine Ninous joined Belstaff in 2014 to oversee the women’s collection. Today, as Creative Director, she is the guiding light for one of the world’s oldest fashion brands. Speaking about her past and aspirations from a young age, Ninous recalls how she has always dreamed of working in fashion. She states, “I knew I wanted to be a fashion designer, and I never changed my mind.” Without wasting any time, she completed her studies and catapulted herself immediately into the working world at the young age of 21 for Christian Lacroix. Transitioning from school into the workforce was “a completely different reality,” she divulges, as she faced the challenges of trying to adapt to the working world.

30

As her childhood dream played out, she moved on to work for Isabel Marant, Comptoir des Contonniers, and Diane von Furstenberg. Today, at Belstaff, she recalls what initially attracted her to the brand. “There aren’t that many brands today that are nearly a hundred years old, and that’s quite beautiful,” she states. The most captivating part, however, was the fact that “there wasn’t just fashion history. There was so much more to the brand, which was so interesting to explore.” Moving from the womenswear division to overlooking both the men and women’s categories, her vision was to “evolve the heritage and make it relevant to today. I wanted an urban and modern customer.” Moving the brand into a more modernized space is something that Delphine has successfully accomplished without sacrificing the DNA and legacy of Belstaff. The regeneration of products over time is quite a challenge, especially when rounding the hundredyear mark.

In a hyper-globalized and chaotic world, brands are forced to constantly adapt and change for a plethora of reasons. At such a time-honoured company, “having a history is an even more relevant gauge of value and is reassuring for a customer,” she states. Without a doubt, today’s consumer can rely on a company that has stood the test of time for nearly a century. Donned by celebrities from Steve McQueen to David Beckham, the modern touch of Ninous has given the brand the ability to reposition itself and be applicable to a new generation.

DELPHINE NINOUS

I KNEW I WANTED TO BE A FASHION designer, AND I NEVER CHANGED MY MIND. Delphine Ninous

One of the brand’s most iconic pieces is the “Trialmaster” four-pocket jacket, which was originally designed around 1948 to endure UK weather. She explains that it is an “everyday job to re-evaluate the proportions and fabrications of this particular piece.” This archetypal jacket for Belstaff was relaunching only hours after the conclusion of our interview. Today, in 2018, the Trialmaster re-debuts in a high-performance fabric - a three-layer stretch nylon that is waterproof and moist-wicking. “Belstaff was innovative in the ‘20s when the brand started, and continues to do so to adapt to a modern way of life,” which concludes that this particular jacket truly represents transformation to Ninous.

With a plethora of accomplishments to date, Delphine considers becoming the creative director of Belstaff “the biggest challenge and most exciting moment” of her career thus far. As life often has it, she also became a mother during this pivotal moment in her career. “It was quite challenging,” she says through delighted and lighthearted laughter. Between motherhood and her career, Ninous finds time to tap into inspiration with the help of a dense archive at Belstaff beginning in the 1920s. When she isn’t travelling back in time, she nurtures herself with art, travel, music, and draws inspiration from icons such as Bob Dylan and Keith Richards. In terms of her fashion industry icons, “I admire Raf Simons. He comes from a pure design point of view and his work is so artistic and graphic.” She respects that Simons’ “consideration for garments transcends trends, resulting in such intelligent creations.” Creative individuals are also known for their pronounced personal style, and she describes her own style as “definitely [a] mix between masculine and feminine, a play with contrast.” As the iconic heritage brand was gearing up to relaunch one of its original brand garments, Ninous takes a moment to look back on her success and offers advice for aspiring designers. “It is a long road with a lot of work. You must strive for perfection,” she encourages. While the road to success is never easy, she softly reaffirms that her life motto is that you must “believe in your instinct.”

ehind the recent surge of success of Booking.com is Dutch businesswoman and current CEO Gillian Tans. She joined the team in 2002, when the company had only a small office in Amsterdam and was appointed in 2011 to her new CEO role. During her tenure, she has expanded the company to more than 17,000 employees in 198 offices worldwide. Booking.com is now the third largest e-commerce company in the world, with over 28 million listings accessible from desktop, mobile, or tablet in 43 different languages. The company itself has 17,500 affiliate and distribution partners and a dedicated team of over 17,000 employees in 198 offices in 70 countries worldwide. Over 1 billion guest nights have been booked (and counting!), averaging 1,550,000 room bookings on the website every day.

about Booking.com, we always believed in doing one thing really well, and that’s quite unique for a company. But what you see happening through technology, and the change in technology, is that you’re able to deliver more to customers. In the beginning, [Booking.com] was only a website, and we only could influence customers during the time that they were on our website booking a property. Today, with mobile, we’re able to help customers a lot better. Because of this device, we’re travelling with customers: we can give them tips, we can help them on where to go, we can help them with maps, etc. Any new technology that comes will deliver an even better experience to customers. We’re also able to offer them attractions, offer them transportation, but we will need more people to build these experiences. I always say technology today is as good as the people making it or thinking about what we need.

We sat down with the brilliant brain leading Booking.com to learn more about her role, inspirations, and the company.

Who are some leaders that you look up to or are inspired by? My biggest example, and

Are you surprised how technology is changing the world? Yes… It’s quite interesting

to see how it develops. The question still is, “How fast will be good enough to really put it in front of customers?” I find it fascinating because any new technology can help to build a better experience for customers, you just need to learn a lot to see where that value is. It has definitely opened up a lot of opportunities, and it changes the way people book travel.

It took a lot of years and a lot of hours of work to build what Booking.com is today. Do you think there’s a day in the future where you will have so much technology that you will actually need less employees? I don’t know… If you think

it has been from the beginning, is Jeff Bezos. I’ve always admired him. If you think about the drive for customers, I mean, he has that extreme [drive]. But he also puts every cent he earns back into customers. That’s how extreme he thinks about it - you can learn a lot from what he’s doing.

To improve your business skills, are there any podcasts that you listen to or life habits that you have that make you a better leader? I think

if you’re open to feedback, it makes you a better leader. I also learn a lot from the team I work with. To me, it’s really about being open to learning, and learning from others. You can get that from books [or] podcasts. I think you can also overdo it though. It’s all about being open and to not think that you know best.

The Master of the

Read up on the iconic shoe brand Manolo Blahnik from the creator himself to prepare for the newest exhibit at Toronto’s Bata Shoe Museum. By Stéphane Le Duc If there’s one dreamy name in the shoe industry, it’s Manolo Blahnik. For over 45 years, this exceptional creator has continuously seduced stars such as Rihanna, Anna Wintour, Madonna, and the iconic Sex and the City character Carrie Bradshaw, who was willing to sell her soul for a pair of Manolos. This summer, the public is invited to admire the mastery and the talent of this timeless designer in an exhibition entirely dedicated to him in Toronto. The Bata Shoe Museum invites us to come and admire this artist’s life work, one that he has dedicated to making the silhouette even more elegant. “All I want is to make women pretty,” said the designer in his youth, who never doubted what the future held for him. He had a culturally rich education in the Canary Islands that allowed him to experience the works of Velásquez, of El Greco, and the cinema of Cocteau and Visconti. He then went on to study law and literature in Geneva. Afterwards, he dreamt of becoming a theatre decorator, and drew costumes with passion while working in a vintage fashion store in Paris. Thanks to his friend Paloma Picasso, he met the iconic Diana Vreeland, the editor of American Vogue at the time who, upon seeing his drawings, declared that he should create shoes. It was then, in 1971, that his future was set.

46

ALL I want is to MAKE WOMEN PRETTY...

Blahnik would rapidly run from atelier to atelier to meet with countless manufacturers, trying to understand the work of artisans and discover the secrets of shoemaking. When he finally entered the industry, he was quickly recognized for his talent: English designer Ossie Clark immediately placed an order for a shoe, now called “The Ossie.” After purchasing a boutique on Bond Street in London in 1973, he has focused on perfecting his craft like a true artisan. He designs with the same keenness as he did when he first started, sculpting his form in wood without ever forgetting to refine the heels of his shoes which are truly works of art. “A big part of my inspiration comes from my childhood, from my passion for cinema, especially older films, and from my trips. I draw sketches, then I visit factories in Italy, where I choose the materials and the colors. I suppose that I have a huge advantage thanks to my studies. I studied the art of shoemaking for decades. I know every single creative and production process, but the key is balance.” Balance, but also his exceptional talent, has allowed him to create his own universe, that has in turn continuously inspired the biggest fashion creators in the world, who, to this day, ask for his help for their own shows. Stunning collaborations were also born from this talent, like with clothing brand Vêtements or superstar Rihanna, which was an adventure the designer wanted to pursue for many reasons. “It is an exciting collaboration, and I am absolutely charmed by the result… Working with Rihanna was an incredible experience, and her dynamism, her passion, her creativity, and her style were reflected in the stunning designs of the shoes.”

MANOLO BLAHNIK: THE ART OF SHOES Until January 6, 2019 Bata Shoe Museum www.batashoemuseum.ca

The Art of Shoes exhibition is an homage to one of the most rewarded designers who has taken over the fashion world, winning three CFDA Fashion Awards, the prestigious Premio Nacinal de Diseno in Spain, the British Fashion Council Outstanding Achievement Award, and was honoured by Queen Elizabeth II with a CBE. Blahnik has explained his success and rewards with a lot of humility, stating that, “Honestly, I don’t know [how I became so successful]. Maybe because the comfort of women is essential to me.” Two-hundred pairs of shoes and 80 sketches are only a fraction of his personal collection of over 30,000 pieces. It is with honour that Toronto takes on the role as closing city of this collection’s adventure around the world.

COVER STORY

DHAVERNAS Meet TV Star Caroline

The down-to-earth Quebec-raised film and TV star known for hits like Hannibal and Mary Kills People, walks us through her early life while growing up in Montreal, her extensive career, overcoming challenges, and dishes on her most-admired actor. By Brenna Dixon What attracted you to the world of acting? Both my

parents are actors, so that’s how I got into acting. My father was doing a lot of dubbing work and I think there was a need for kids’ voices. I actually started dubbing when I was eight. When I was 11, I joined their agency and then began auditioning, which led to filming my first movie and doing my first TV show. I guess I never really had time to dream of being an actor, it just kind of happened. I just fell in love with it.

What was life like growing up in Montreal, in general and as an aspiring actress? I actually went through

all my high school years working, but I never worked too much, so I was able to stay in school and have a normal life which I think was an amazing thing. I had access to both worlds which was fantastic. I got to go to school and have my little gang of friends and social life which is so important as a teenager. At the same time, I got to skip school once in a while to work, which was an amazingly fascinating world.

Photographer Richard Bernardin Stylist Fritz

Being a French-Canadian actress, was it difficult for you to break into the English and American TV markets? I remember auditioning during high

school for English speaking roles and it took a while for me to get them. I think I wasn’t feeling as confident. When I was 22, I moved to New York after filming with an American actress for a Quebec movie called “The Baroness and the Pig”. After we wrapped, she invited me to meet her agent in New York - me and that agent are still working together now, after all these years. It’s just so fantastic to have met someone who truly believes in you, who respects your choices, and has great taste reading scripts, understanding whether that script is right for you or not. I love working with her: she has been one of my major allies in my career.

You seem to be drawn to the ‘thriller’ genre – does that reflect your personality? Are you a thrill seeker?

I hadn’t noticed! I don’t generally tend to prefer the thriller genre, but I guess it’s a bit of a coincidence what has happened in the past years. I don’t see a lot of thriller movies and I’m not a horror fan in anyway, so I guess it just kind of happened. I tend to be drawn to filmmakers, directors, writers, and stories that I want to tell and be part of as opposed to any certain genre.

because we have so little control over who we get to work with at the end of the day. But, a dream producer for me would be someone who gives a lot of freedom to the director. I really admire a lot of movies that were made in the 1970s in America because I feel like they have a sense of freedom, exploration, and experimentation that we have lost over the years. It also feels like directors had more of a say regarding who they got to hire, but perhaps I am just idealizing that era. For me, I feel that there is something so strong there creatively that perhaps we should allow ourselves to go back to [it] in order to create new things. Today, we are doing so many remakes of stories that have already been told, and, most of the time, that doesn’t really appeal to me. There are so many brilliant ideas; I wish the business would collectively make that effort to let our imaginations run wild and give ourselves the freedom to go there. All the grand movies we look back upon and admire were made by people who had the guts to just go for it!

What would you consider the highlight of your career thus far? I feel like it’s been a slow ride for me. I’ve had

so many amazing opportunities, but I can’t go back in and indicate just one. I have been blessed with fantastic projects in the past couple of years. Mary Kills People was great because playing the lead as a mother was so close to my reality. There have been so many experiences in the recent years that I am fond of, but I truly think the next highlights are ahead of me.

What has been the most difficult experience in acting that you have had to overcome? I think acting in -40 degree

weather in the Montreal countryside, at night, and in period clothing, was the biggest challenge. It was difficult because I felt I didn’t have access to my emotions: my body was shutting down and went into survival mode to endure the weather. I had a lot of emotional scenes to do, but my ability to go there was inhibited and not available to me. I was in a panic. Sometimes it is the elements that you just can’t control which are the challenge.

Can you name one thing that you can’t go without? The old-

Who would be your desired film producer to work with on the film of your dreams? I don’t think ahead that much

I HAVE learned toLET GO AND EMBRACEanything THAT ISN’TPLANNED AND POPS UP. The loss of control is something that I have had to habituate myself with and approach quietly, trusting my instincts when a scene goes in another direction. It’s okay to not know what the final result looks like; you have to trust the people around you.

What actors do you admire? I love Cate Blanchett, first-

ly for her talent but also her beauty, her intelligence, and outspoken nature. I admire her sense of freedom and sound mind every time I hear her speak.

What inspires you to keep going? I know that I am privileged to be doing what I’m doing. I’ve been doing this forever and people still want to hire me, so I try to keep that in mind. I also keep in mind the lovely life this career has given me access to: I have travelled the world because of this job. And of course, the people I love keep me going. I have amazing people in my life, and when I get a little discouraged when work is dense, I am reassured that, because of them, the rest of my life is very fulfilling. What kind of roles do you hope to play in the future? I would like to do more comedy! I did comedy when I was 25, and I’d really like to go back to it at some point.

What do you think about the fashion scene in Canada? I love to get dressed up. I have so much clothing from my mother and grandmother from the ‘70s, so I’m a bit of a collector. I love UNTTLD from Montreal; I think they do great work! I also adore Mara Hoffman for her prints - I think she’s one of my favourite designers that I’ve come across most recently. Where would be your dream destination to get away from the stress of your career for a bit? I’ve never been to

er I get, the more I realize that being able to draw, paint, and visit a museum is vital to my happiness. I am not able to get to stand in front of a painting every day and have it take me to another world, so it’s a luxury. Culture is definitely something that I think I couldn’t go without.

Asia, and I’ve been meaning to go there for a 3or 4-month trip. I’ve never done that kind of long trip that people did in their youth. I’d love to do a long adventure without worrying about getting on a plane soon - to have the ability to just deposit yourself into your surroundings.

What would you consider the hardest part of acting? The

What advice would you give to a younger you? If I had to think of one thing I think it would be to just own your decisions - don’t make decisions to please others. We often try to please other people when we are younger, and we all want to be loved, but you learn later on when you own your decisions that people just go with the flow and respect you for it.

older you get, you change, and the way you work changes as well. When I was younger, I felt like I had a lot more control over a scene or what I was about to do when I was on set. Now, it’s hard but equally amazing, as I have learned to let go and embrace anything that isn’t planned and pops up.

TRAVEL

Life Travels with

SILVERSEA

When we were offered the opportunity to travel with Silversea, we were so excited. I had never considered embarking on a cruise before, but this trip was an incredible introduction. By Kathia Cambron

Silversea goes above and beyond to make your trip a pleasurable experience. With only 380 passengers and 376 crew members onboard, it was a trip of complete luxury and authenticity. My husband and I went on the cruise in November, just before the holidays. Our 18-day itinerary started in Rome, where we spent the night exploring for the best pizza place while strolling through the streets, admiring all the monuments. After a restful night and a nice breakfast in the company of fellow passengers, we got on the bus heading towards the port where we were to embark on our travels with Silversea. The boat, Silver Spirit, was so beautiful: every detail was impeccable, from the wooden staircase,

52

to the five restaurants (including one Relais & Chateaux), to the pool deck, library, cinema, lounge, bars, gym, and spa. They even had a casino – it was so exciting. We unpacked in our beautiful suite, which had a bathroom complete with a shower and bath as well as a large living room with a balcony where we could enjoy a meal or a glass of wine. Our butler came in to make sure we were settling in fine with a tray of luxury toiletries to choose from, from top-of-the-line brands like Bulgari. We then walked – well, really, we ran – around the whole ship, admiring its beauty and all the art from Picasso, Miro, and Dali, among others. We even had the chance to hit the gym before dressing up for our first dinner on board Silver Spirit.

That night we tried The Restaurant. The minute you take a seat, they bring a flute of champagne. While having a look at our menu and at the people around us, we were so happy to be there and to be a part of this adventure. How cool it is to be on a luxurious boat, going to exotic destinations, at this beautiful table surrounded by elegant people, having a romantic evening with absolutely no worries and no obligations? Many times throughout the trip, I attributed some of my enjoyment to the length of the stay; 18 days of adventure was the perfect duration to make a really relaxing and unforgettable experience. Something I was hoping for was delicious food, and I was not disappointed. It was a pleasant surprise that, in any restaurant you dined in, they already knew dietary restrictions and preferences, presenting great options that were both vegetarian and gluten-free. The glasses of wine were flowing, and we indulged that evening, but every lunch or dinner that followed offered the same impeccable service and food and drink selection. After dinner, we went to the top floor of the ship for a night cap and a dance while the boat was navigating toward Naples. In Naples, we decided to get off the boat and explore the town. The city is like a mountain and there are stairs everywhere. Most of our fellow travellers went to Pompeii, but we hiked to the top of the city’s mountain and visited an old castle, from which we had an amazing view of the city. We continued by touring some of the city’s finest art galleries. On our way back to the boat, we stopped in at a great local restaurant and tasted some delectable desserts.

THE SILVER SPIRIT IN THE PORT OF OMAN

That night, we were excited to get back to the boat for a formal dinner where everyone looked impeccable to the point that you feel you are part of a movie scene. We opted to share a table with other passengers, two of whom became our favourite people on board, having several fun dinners and chats on the deck. One was Catherine from New Zealand. She had the most amazing energy and personality; by day two, she had collected an entourage of the most interesting guests on Silver Spirit. If I were an artist, I would make her my muse – she is that dynamic and fascinating. We also met with Christopher, a very British gentleman that has had the most impressive life adventure, including travelling in Dakar with Prince William, and has been on the Concord, the Queen Elizabeth, and so on. We were also seated with a couple from Los Angeles, a retired classical pianist that was on a 50-day cruise (quite a lifestyle!). We ended the night meeting a couple from England that, despite their young age, has already made several trips with Silversea.

53

The next day we arrived in Alexandria, Egypt, a port city founded in 323 BC. I have to say that Egypt was not what I had anticipated. Despite being one of the oldest civilizations, it was dirty and poor. We had a police escort until our return to the boat that night. The Pyramids were fascinating, but seeing this harsh reality of the city was shocking. The next day, we walked around Alexandria, but the city’s decrepitude made it hard to enjoy. It was so dirty that you didn’t know where to walk. I was happy that Silversea offered this on its itinerary: I’m grateful to have seen what life is like for other people and to better understand the impacts of political challenge. This stop made my experience real. Instead of having a super commercial experience, which I would’ve absolutely disliked, this was a real look into life around the world, and that is how travelling enriches your life.

SHARM EL SHEIKH, EGYPT

All our destinations were offering so much culture and enriching experiences, exactly what I was looking for. But at the time, we still had two other stops in Egypt, and I was not sure I was going to be thrilled by them. We navigated through the Canal of Suez, which was quite unique. The colours there were surreal. I learned that the canal makes $5 billion in revenue annually - there are a lot of interesting things happening in there. It was also my husband Dooma’s birthday, and we couldn’t have asked for a better place to celebrate. We booked La Dame, the Relais & Chateaux restaurant to celebrate, and it was exquisite. We then celebrated at the club with our friends, and by the time we came back to our suite, our butler had decorated our room in honour of the occasion. When we arrived in Sharm El Sheik, we decided to take a private car with a guide. We went to the national park and it was so beautiful. After a great walk, we did some snorkeling in the Red Sea. This was one of the highlights of our trip; the sea was so blue and so deep, filled with fish of all colours. We then visited a mosque, tried some falafel, and ended our day for a shisha and coffee with our guide. I had an Instax camera and offered a few people a Polaroid portrait, which they were so amazed by. This was a truly fun day, and our guide was very kind and generous. It was a great place for jewellery shopping, but you really have to negotiate hard.

SUEZ CANAL

Back on the ship for two days at sea, it was time to have lunch by the pool, followed by an afternoon chatting with new friends, sharing experiences, attending a lecture, and playing bridge or trivia. It was quite a relaxing time.

ALEXANDRA, EGYPT

SAFAGA, EGYPT

SALALAH, OMAN

The next day we woke up in a new city. We watched Silver Spirit sail to the port before our breakfast on the bridge with the morning light shining down. It was such a fantastic way to start a new adventure. The colours in Jordan, our day’s destination, were phenomenal: a blue-violet sky sprinkled with some orange and deep greens. Most of the cruise travellers went to Petra, an archaeological Kingdom built in 300 BC. We decided to spend the day walking around town exploring the city, while shopping for gifts and souvenirs. They have an amazing jewellery selection. Our next stop was Safaga, back in Egypt, and we signed up for the Valley of the Kings: the tombs. The pyramids in Safaga were fascinating, especially because of their history; we actually saw the oldest pyramid, built in 2600 BC. As the bus stopped, the surrounding valley was mesmerizing, but there was no sign for what we were about to discover. The tombs were truly amazing – you enter through an underground tunnel that opens up into the hidden spaces that are richly decorated from wall to ceiling with hand-sculpted details and vibrant paintings, which have not lost their colour after all these years. The tombs were built for the kings and queens, work starting from the day they were born, and serve as a place for their treasures so they can have them in the afterlife. After two days at sea, we then stopped at Oman, in the Arabian Peninsula, which generated much enthusiasm. I was really looking forward to discovering this country; Salalah ‘The Garden City’ is the vacation place with miles of deserted beaches with hardy Bedouins and their camels. This is the country of Frankincense, the incense that is used in all Catholic

churches. Omanies dress in a traditional way and have an air of low-stress and happy lives. The next day we stopped in the port of Muscat, where we spent a day in the Souk. We didn’t visit the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, but we saw one of his yachts and some of his incredibly impressive properties. We visited a restaurant, Bait Al Luban, near the port for a delicious dinner before going back on board, where we met a friend for a drink. Our trip was about to come to an end with our final destination, Dubai, where we spent our last day by the pool of a luxurious hotel. Travelling is so enriching: it helps you have a better understanding of people, it exposes you to new ideas and cultures, it broadens your perspective. During this trip, I was fortunate to visit five countries on two continents. I was particularly pleased with the opportunity to access countries and cities that I don’t think I would have ever visited otherwise, and certainly not for a stand-alone trip. On board Silver Spirit, not only did I travel through history, I also cruised through a new sea of life experiences with a diverse entourage. This was my first cruise experience, and now I’m looking forward to my next. Of course, it will be with Silversea - and hopefully with Catherine from New Zealand, too.

KAT VON D SHADE & LIGHT CONTOUR POWDER

RODIAL THE ICONS COLLECTION LIMITED EDITION PALETTE SEPHORA ILLUMINATE PALETTE

Powder Formula POWDER FORMULAS ARE THE MOST COMMON FORMS OF CONTOURS AND HIGHLIGHTERS, AND ALMOST EVERY BRAND HAS THEIR VERSION OF IT. THEY ARE UNIVERSALLY FLATTERING AND EASY TO USE. DEPENDING ON THE PIGMENT AND FORMULA, THEY CAN BE LIGHTWEIGHT OR BOLD. RODIAL The Icons Collection Limited Edition Palette ($95)

This palette contains eight products in one! There are matte and shimmery highlighters, bronzers/contours, and even flattering blush colours. As a makeup artist who has to lug around 100 lbs of makeup on the reg, anytime I can get several amazing products in one palette, I have to have it! The colours and textures are amazing and apply beautifully.

KAT VON D Shade & Light Contour Powder ($64) at SEPHORA

The contour palette comes with three matte highlighters and three matte contours in different tones, both warm and cool, allowing for mixing and matching. Sometimes matte formulas don’t blend as smoothly as their shimmery counterparts, but that is not the case with these powders. It’s also worth noting the Shade & Light Eye palette which has highlight, contour, and blush, along with a variety of matte eyeshadows.

SEPHORA Illuminate Palette ($35) and Contour Palette ($35)

The Sephora brand is great at taking what their customers love about other brands and churning out their own versions at a better price. These palettes are no exception. The Contour Palette comes with six matte shades - three highlights and three contours. Depending on your skin tone, you could use the colours in a variety of ways. They apply very well and have decent pigment. The same goes for the Illuminate Palette, which has an array of six different shimmery highlighters in a mix of warm and cool colours.

MAC Hyper Real Glow Palette Flash & Awe ($39.50)

MAC is slaying the highlighter game with this trio of highlighters in one palette. The consistency is nothing short of luxurious with a flawless pay off. It’s definitely similar to the super popular highlighters from Becca, but you get three amazing tones in one palette. MAC HYPER REAL GLOW PALETTE FLASH & AWE

SMASHBOX STUDIO SKIN SHAPING FOUNDATION

REVLON INSTA-FIX HIGHLIGHTER IN GOLD & LIGHT PINK

SMASHBOX LA LIGHTS IN HOLLYWOOD AND HIGHLIGHT

Stick Highlighter & Contour STICK HIGHLIGHTER AND CONTOUR PRODUCTS ARE GREAT FOR THOSE ONTHE-GO, TRAVELLING WELL AND ABIDING BY THE “NO LIQUIDS” RULE WHEN FLYING. THEY APPLY WITH EASE AND CAN YIELD RESULTS AS MINIMAL AND FLAWLESS AS THEIR LIQUID COUNTERPARTS. SMASHBOX Studio Skin Shaping Foundation ($48) at SEPHORA

While technically labeled a foundation, these sticks have a contour colour on one end and a highlighter colour on the other. As I’ve mentioned, I love a product that gives me the best bang for my buck while limiting how much I need to carry. The formula is the perfect natural matte - not too heavy or too light, covering imperfections flawlessly.

REVLON Insta-Fix Highlighter in Gold & Light Pink ($12.32) at TARGET

This brand has been around since 1932, and they continually put out great products at a great price. These highlighters are a perfect example of that. The shimmer and pay-off is comparable to that of its luxury brand competitors. The formula isn’t too greasy or oily, making it long-wearing and ideal for oilier skin types while still creamy enough for those with drier skin.

SMASHBOX LA Lights in Hollywood and Highlight ($36) at SEPHORA

I love this highlighting stick! It’s so creamy with a bold kick of shimmer. The packaging comes with a built-in blender on the opposite end, but I found the formula worked best when applied and blended with my fingers. However, it may be too emollient for oilier skin types.

BENEFIT Watt’s Up! ($40) at SEPHORA

This stick highlighter with a built-in sponge is definitely tied with Smashbox as a favourite. It’s a perfect consistency, flawlessly blending the shimmery highlight into the skin. The shimmer is so fine and well-milled that glitter particles aren’t detected, and all you are left with is the perfect reflective highlight.

MAC STROBE CREAM IN PEACH LITE

FARSALI JELLY BEAM ILLUMINATOR

MAKE UP FOR EVER PRO SCULPTING PALETTE

Liquid and Cream Highlight & Contour LIQUID AND CREAM PRODUCTS HAVE GAINED POPULARITY IN THE LAST DECADE OR SO, ESPECIALLY IN RECENT YEARS GIVEN THE RISE OF THE “DEWY SKIN” TREND. DEWY SKIN IS NOT JUST FOR FRESH-FACED MODELS AND THE TRICKS OF MAKEUP ARTISTS; MORE AND MORE CONSUMERS ARE WANTING THE SOFTER, MORE NATURAL LOOK THAT A CREAM OR LIQUID CAN PROVIDE. BUT DON’T GET ME WRONG, THESE FORMULATIONS CAN STILL PACK A PUNCH IF THAT’S WHAT YOU DESIRE. ANASTASIA BEVERLY HILLS Contour Cream Kit in “Light” and “Fair” ($40)

ANASTASIA BEVERLY HILLS CONTOUR CREAM KIT IN “LIGHT” AND “FAIR” RMS BEAUTY HERO SKU THE LIVING LUMINIZER

Contouring and bronzing very pale skin can be a challenge because most products on the market are too orange or pigmented for pale skin types. These shades from Anastasia are perfectly ashy, the ideal tone for those with milky skin. The “Fair” palette also has a shimmery, creamy highlight that I use daily on set.

MAKE UP FOR EVER Pro Sculpting Palette ($55) at SEPHORA

This quad from MUFE has four essentials: a concealer/highlighter, contour/bronzer, a shimmer highlight, and a peachy-pink blush, all in a convenient package. This makes it a breeze to bring with you for quick application and touch-ups wherever you may be, whether for personal use or a makeup artist on set. BENEFIT DEW THE HOOLA SOFT MATTE LIQUID BRONZER

60

BENEFIT Dew the Hoola Soft Matte Liquid Bronzer ($38) Why I love this creamy, liquid version so much is that it is a stand-alone product. There is not much else out there that has this same consistency for gentle defining and bronzing of the face. It’s also sheer enough that it could be used all over the face for a sun-kissed glow.

RMS BEAUTY Hero SKU the Living Luminizer ($47.50) I have to include this makeup artist favourite because not only is this highlighter one of the best for shimmer, dewy texture, and glossy finish, but it is also from the all-natural brand RMS. When a product can be this good and good for my skin, I have to have one for myself and one for my kit.

FARSALI Jelly Beam Illuminator ($50) at SEPHORA

This odd jelly-like illuminator caught my attention because it has a consistency I have not seen before. It goes on creamy and glossy and dries to an almost lacquered finish. The shimmer is so refined that it reflects the most glorious highlight of all highlights.

MAC Strobe Cream in Peach Lite ($40)

I worked at MAC in the early 2000s, and Strobe Cream was the only thing like it on the market at the time. It’s definitely the OG liquid illuminator. Now in a market full of shimmer creams, Strobe cream still stands the test of time. It’s updated version, Peach Lite, offers a sheer-tinted, warm, and peachy glow. It’s perfect for the face or body.

HEAT Surviving the

CANADIANS know ALL ABOUT WINTER. It encompasses almost half of our year. So, WHEN THE DAYS GET LONGER and the SUN and HEAT GET STRONGER, we are READY TO GET outside and enjoy EVERY MOMENT OF IT. But like a snake needs to shed its skin, we are IN NEED OF A LITTLE REFRESH before hitting the cottage, BEACH, OR MUSIC FESTIVAL CIRCUIT. NOT TO WORRY - if you need to get SUMMER-READY FAST, we’ve got your FACE and BODY GAME PLAN SORTED. Text, Makeup, and Concept by Sabrina Rinaldi Photographer Chris Nicholls On-Set Art Direction and Fashion Editor Peter Papapetrou Model Fred Juneau

Sun Protection

We couldn’t talk about summer without talking about sun protection. I know we all love a tan and think we look better with a bronzed face and body, but it’s 2018, and much like smoking, we now know excessive sun exposure may not be the best life choice if we want to look our best in this decade and into the next. Let’s think long-term goals here: we want to age gracefully like Julianne Moore, who looks like she has worn SPF since she exited the womb. So, do your future self a favour and make sure to load up on sun protection from reputable brands, like DERMALOGICA who has Protection Sport SPF 50 ($51) which is longwearing and works to keep the skin moisturized without the greasy feel of some other brands. Mineral sunscreen is also a smart option for those wanting to go the natural route. LASPA ($40) has a great range of sunscreens that are fragrance-free, hypoallergenic and 100% natural. They seamlessly blend into the skin, making them an ideal base for makeup. If staying moisturized isn’t a problem for you as summer heat enhances your natural dewiness (read: oiliness), then maybe a powder mineral formula like the one from COLORESCIENCE is for you. This lightweight, sheer-tinted powder can be worn alone or on top of the foundation. This is our favourite on-the-go choice since it has a built-in brush applicator and is easy to apply anytime and anywhere.

Self-Tanning

Once you are all protected from the sun, how do you look like a bronzed goddess and like you lived on a yacht in South Beach, Miami all winter? (We’re talking about you, Cary Tauben). Self-tanners have come a long way and are an excellent option for full-body coverage. Cult brand ST. TROPEZ ($39-54) is a hit for a reason: they offer a wide variety of formulas (think mousse, mist, and cream), and the tint doesn’t have a hint of orange to it - the result is much more natural.

70

Skin & face Another first-rate product is SUN Self Tanner ($35). This is a makeup industry favourite (available online at www.musst.ca). This spray delivers a fine mist that develops into a flawless tan over the next several hours. It’s perfect when you need to be tanned in a minute but want it to last for a week. (Fun fact: our model for this shoot was sprayed with this product a mere hour before shooting). If self-spraying isn’t your thing or you don’t have a makeup artist to do it for you, there are at home services, like Toronto-based company TAN ON THE RUN ($40-70, www.tanontherun.com), that offer in-home, organic spray tans. For those not wanting a tan that sticks around for a week, BENEFIT has you covered with the Hoola Zero Tan Lines ($40). This gel formula is transferresistant, streak-free, and lasts up to 12 hours.

Laser Treatments Let’s say you’re like us and may have

had a sun-worshipping phase in your early teens (Fun fact #2: Most of our sun damage is acquired before the age of 18!), and now you are stuck with residual sun damage, sun spots, and skin laxity. What to do? Not to worry, the world of facial laser treatments has exploded, and there is a laser for every skin type and every skin need. “Intense Pulse Light (IPL) or Photo Facial is the number one laser on the market to target and treat red and brown pigment caused by sun damage. Not to mention that it also helps with reducing pore size and building collagen,” says skincare and beauty expert Tilda Peltz. But she warns, “This is definitely a treatment you want to do in the winter months, as sun exposure before or after a treatment could end up worsening skin discolouration. Usually, about 3-5 visits during the colder months should be able to treat pigment issues.” This super-effective laser treatment takes about an hour. It registers a 5-7 on the pain scale and feels like rubber bands snapping on your face. “As with any laser treatment,” says Tilda, “you want to make sure you are going to a licensed and trained professional.” (Prices range from $250$450 per treatment).

Another great option to better your skin and to firm up skin laxity is Ultherapy. Ultherapy utilizes Ultra Sound technology to go to the deeper dermal layers. “This is a foundational treatment,” says Chantal Ward, R.N. and National Trainer for Ulthera who operates out of her own Toronto-based clinic, Clarity Med Spa. “It goes past the top layers of the skin, down to the connective tissue to cause heat trauma and injury, thus encouraging and stimulating the body’s natural healing response. This controlled injury, in turn, creates shrinking of skin tissue (tightening) and the growth of new collagen and elastin.” This FDA-approved laser is the new facelift since prior to this the only way to tighten those deeper dermal layers was through surgery and going “under the knife.” Chantal says, “Women were starting with facelifts at 40 and up.” But now, “Women are able to do these non-invasive treatments to tighten skin and also to pre-empt skin laxity by addressing it before the skin has a chance to sag, all of these anti-aging benefits with zero downtime.” The treatment takes an hour, and on a pain scale, it registers about a 1-2. Because it’s treating the lower layers of the skin, results can take 2-4 months to show and last about a year. Chantal suggests a yearly Ultherapy session either on lower face or full face to achieve and maintain results. (Prices range from $2,400 - $3,500 for a single treatment)

Microneedling

If rough, dull, and acne-scarred skin texture is your issue, then microneedling and Intracel microneedling are your answers. Tilda Peltz specializes in traditional microneedling and says it’s ideal because it is safe to do year-round. “Microneedling uses small and controlled injury to the surface of the skin by way of a medical-grade derma pen. This derma pen creates microscopic columns in the upper epidermis, and the body’s natural healing response then kicks in to repair and heal the top layer of skin.” She also recommends doing Plasma Rich Platelets (PRP) or the Vampire Facial to the average consumer in conjunction with the microneedling. “When the skin achieves these microscopic columns from the microneedling, it can easily absorb the platelet-rich blood that has been drawn from the patient.” Tilda warns that staying out of the sun is essential for 48 hours and patients can expect redness, much like that of a sunburn that lasts a day or two. On a pain scale, it registers at about 5. (Prices range from $500-$1,000). Chantal Ward offers Intracel microneedling, which instead of using the traditional derma pen, utilizes a small square-shaped tool attached to a machine that delivers radio frequency heat to the lower layers of the epidermis. “Not only is the upper epidermis (top layer of skin) getting 49 microneedles per square centimetre, but the end of each of these needles delivers radio frequency [heat] down to the lower layers as well as the surface layer of the epidermis, causing a healing response from the body.” What does this mean to the average person? You are treating the top layer of skin and also the lower, deeper layers (your future skin), and that means over the next 3-4 months you will continue to see improvement in skin texture and reduced pore size and acne scars. “The best part,” adds

Chantal “is there is no downtime. Much like Ultherapy, patients can go back to normal activities the following day.” Treatment takes about an hour including applying a numbing cream, and it registers about a 2-3 on the pain scale. Chantal recommends four treatments spaced four weeks apart with annual upkeep. (Price starts at $695 per treatment).

Skincare Products

If lasers aren’t your thing or just not a part of your lifestyle and budget (yet), that doesn’t mean there is no hope for you to achieve your skin goals. Top-of-the-line brands are churning out skincare that will not only get you glowing for summer but all year round. Luxury skincare brand RODIAL (who can do no wrong in our books) has the solution. Rodial infuses their collection with the skin resurfacing benefits of vitamin C along with a variety of other skincare workhorses like glycolic acid and salicylic acid. This potent blend of vitamin C and other key ingredients are sure to boost radiance and evenout the skin’s tone, texture, and complexion. For those with dry, sensitive skin you may want to check out the Calm Water Gel from DERMALOGICA ($65). This weightless water-gel moisturizer refreshes and rehydrates skin while creating an invisible barrier against environmental assault. CAUDALIE also offers hydration in the form of their Vinosource Moisturizing Sorbet ($48). This oil-free, ultralightweight soothing gel-cream is like a cool drink of water for thirsty skin. And let’s not forget their best seller, the Beauty Elixir face mist ($58). Nothing refreshes a hot summer’s day like this fresh-smelling skin revitalizing spray. All-natural brand GRAYDON SKINCARE also has their take on face mist with the Face Food Mineral Mist ($38). This Canadian brand infuses their spray with camelina and grapeseed oil and a blend of lavender, chamomile, and sandalwood, making it akin to a poolside margarita.

Body

Now that we have your face game strong, let’s not forget about that beach bod. If you spent your winter months hitting it hard at the gym, eating right, and getting in all your workouts, congrats because you are ahead of the game. But, if you are like most of us and used the colder months to hide under layers of clothing, hit the snooze button, and indulged in treats while making your way through the entire Netflix catalogue, not to worry, you can get the summer body you want faster than you think. We’ve compiled the best quick fix ways to make sure you are ready to hit the beach the second the temperatures rise.

Fitness When wanting to burn off excess fat fast and

make quick fitness gains, there is no better workout than High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), which utilizes short and intense exercises with intermittent rest. This approach of going all out in short bursts with a recovery period (think one minute on and one minute off), not only revs up metabolism and scorches calories but means you don’t need to work out for more than 45 minutes at a time. ORANGE THEORY is a gym that’s sprouting up everywhere that practices this style of training. Certified trainer and Orange Theory coach Mathew Mustapha says, “What separates OT from other HIIT workouts is that every person wears a heart rate monitor that we can see up on a screen. This guarantees each person is working to his/her own personal max.” He explains, “once we demonstrate the exercise to the group we ensure to also demonstrate alternate options if we find an exercise is too hard or too easy for an individual.” This approach makes HIIT accessible to all. “Another great factor about OT is that no two workouts are the same. This form of muscle confusion makes sure that no one will plateau and/or get bored.” The actual workouts last approximately 45 minutes, and depending on the day will contain cardio, conditioning exercise, weights, rower machines, and a host of other challenging exercises. The best part about HIIT training is the afterburn effect or Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption (EPOC). This afterburn means your resting metabolic rate is jacked up by 10-20% over the next 24-36 hours. That gives you 1-3 days with an elevated metabolism. “Ideally,” says Mat, “HIIT workouts should be done no more than 2-4 [times] a week with a 24-hour break in-between each workout.” That afterburner effect is what makes HIIT workouts so ideal for those looking to shed pounds quickly. If you subscribe to a healthy diet and lifestyle approach, you’ll see results. If making it to a class is a struggle or doesn’t work with your schedule, online services like BEACH BODY ON DEMAND are great alternatives. Within the comforts

74

of your own home, you have access to hundreds of workouts that are sure to get you moving and sweating. Popular workouts like P90X, Turbo Fire, and Insanity, will put you through the ringer and make sure you get into the HIIT zone. (www.beachbodyondemand.com, for $100 a year). Whether you are looking to supplement your intense exercise routine or if HIIT style training isn’t for you, ballet barre, pilates, yoga, and other dance style workouts are great for toning and building long, lean muscles. Paige Carper, owner and trainer at studio PURE BARRE, says, “Barre and other toning-style workouts concentrate on working the stabilizing muscles. These smaller muscle groups help and support the larger muscle groups by working the secondary and tertiary muscles. This will not only help tighten and tone your body, but these smaller muscles help take over when the bigger muscles get fatigued from more intense workouts.” “Another important thing to thing to consider,” says Josephine Cuthill, owner and trainer of a workout movement called ESSENTRICS, “is that as we age, our muscles deteriorate, and our smaller muscle groups are the first to go. Once that happens, skin starts to sag, and we lose tone and definition.” Essentrics is a workout that focuses on lengthening and working the entire chain of muscles in each part of the body. “Just because these workouts are low-impact, don’t be fooled into thinking they are easy. When you fully contract the muscle chain and all the surrounding fascia, the burn and fatigue are like nothing else you will have experienced.” Adding these types of workouts into your regular routine is essential for achieving that toned, tight and fit physique. Popular celebrity trainers like TRACY ANDERSON and BODY BY SIMONE both offer their own athome version. Each of these women takes you through dance-style cardio and combine it with killer abs, arms, and excruciating glute exercises to get that booty higher, rounder, and tighter. (tracyanderson.com and bodybysimone.com).

CoolSculpting

Now if logging numerous hours exercising still can’t rid you of stubborn pockets of fat, technology has finally found a safe and permanent solution. CoolSculpting is offered at just about every medical spa in the country, and it’s easy to see why. “It works. Period,” says Linda Murphy, CoolSculpting expert and co-owner at CLARITY MED SPA in Toronto. “Anyone within 5-20 lbs of their ideal body weight can expect to achieve permanent fat loss by way of fat cell destruction using cryolipolysis. This technology destroys the fat cells permanently by essentially freezing them to death. The body then recognizes these cells as dead and foreign and eliminates them through the lymphatic system over the next 120 days. Results are visible and suitable for men and women.” “You can come in, and within 1-2 hours, permanently shrink love handles, saddlebags, your double chin, or other exercise resistant areas.” What one can expect when going for CoolSculpting is to lose 25% from each area. Areas are measured out and priced per “handful” (average price is $750 per handful). Once you are seated, a big paddle-like device that is hooked up to a large machine is attached to the area being treated for 30-60 minutes. A deep cold sensation can be felt at first, but then gives way to numbing and nothing else is felt. At the end of the session, a key step is for the practitioner to massage the area for 2-3 minutes.

After the treatment, clients can go right back to their usual routines and activities. “Since the fat cells are destroyed and eliminated through the lymphatic system, there is no need to diet or do additional exercise. However,” states Linda, “a great way to help the body rid itself of these dead tissues is by way of lymphatic massage.” Many spas offer this service, but body cupping also achieves the same results at home. LURE ESSENTIALS has a variety of silicone massage cups for DIY cupping and lymphatic massage. These cups glide over lubricated skin to relax muscle tension, release fascia, and stimulate lymphatic drainage. Another great advance in technology is radio frequency skin tightening with EXILIS. “Not everyone will need this after CoolSculpting, but [it’s] for those with skin laxity on the body, whether from age, pregnancy, or weight loss. Several Exilis treatments can help tighten the skin on just about every part of the body,” she says. “How it works is radio frequency is emitted deep down into the body to heat up the water in the tissue, creating thermal injury and ultimately throwing the body into ‘repair mode.’ With this repair comes the production of new collagen and elastin.” This is the same technology that is used with Intracel microneedling for the face. Exilis also utilizes RF heat to access the lower layers of the skin to create tighter, smoother skin on the surface. Typically, patients need 4-8 treatments, spaced two weeks apart. (Price starts at $295 per treatment).

Butt Lift Let’s say your goal isn’t to slim down but in-

stead to beef up? Or should I say, “peach up”? Never has a round, full, perky bottom ever been so coveted. But what can one do if performing a million squats while eating copious amounts of protein just isn’t yielding the desired result? “The new Brazil Butt Lift,” answers Dr. Sean Rice MD, owner of RICE COSMETIC SURGERY clinic and National Trainer for SCULPTRA and the BRAZIL BUTT LIFT. “Sculptra has emerged on the market as a way to gently boost size, firmness, and shape in the buttocks. Let it be said it is not actually a filler per se, but polylactic acid. What this is, he explains, “is an injectable that stimulates your body’s own collagen. Generally, patients need 2-3 syringes per side and roughly three treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart.” “You have none of the pain, discomfort, or downtime like we did with past procedures.” he says. “And results can start to be seen roughly halfway through the second treatment and last 1-2 years.” Maintenance includes one treatment per year and treatments are priced at $4,500 each. As always, you want to make sure you go to a licensed and trained doctor like Dr. Sean Rice when considering something of this magnitude. So now that you’re armed with your game plan: Your face can be snatched, and your body can be bangin’ this summer. But right now, it’s time for you to get started because once summer is here - it doesn’t last long. This is Canada after all.

Living in Toronto, there is pollution everywhere. From heavy traffic to never-ending construction, it often feels like the city is lacking the most vital ingredient we need in our everyday lives: oxygen. Luckily, the Blitz Facial Bar, an express facial boutique run by the same people who opened the urban oasis, Body Blitz Spa, over a decade ago, is now offering the O2 Blitz Facial. Unlike other oxygen facials that use serum airbrushes to treat hydration, this treatment uses a dermal-grade oxy gel and sheet mask to address a variety of skin concerns to create a healthy, youthful glow. Skin is cleansed and gently exfoliated before the oxy gel is applied, which is made with organic ingredients and reacts when in contact with the specially-designed sheet mask to generate oxygen for deep absorption. The benefits of the treatment are seen immediately – we’re talking face contouring, plumping, brightening, and tightening – and will only improve over the course of 10 days. Blitzfacialbar.com

Running from Rock Bottom

LIONEL SANDERS

It was the middle of the night. Lionel Sanders laced up his shoes, stepped outside and started to run. He’d done it hundreds of times before, but never under these circumstances. He ran towards the one place he knew no one could find him: the graveyard.

By Braydon Holmyard

T

wo nights earlier, Sanders had somewhat of an awakening. It was just a regular evening at his place of residence in Windsor, Ontario. A group of people had gathered. There were drugs. Plenty of alcohol. A fistfight. But on that night of November 5, 2009, Sanders didn’t drink. He didn’t do drugs, either. Watching it all transpire through a sober lens ignited something in him. That’s why he found himself running through the cemetery. He’d do it nearly every night for the next three weeks. Because running has always been something he could come back to. Even when he felt like there was nothing worth running towards. Before he became one of the fastest men in the world to compete in the Ironman, a grueling test of mind and body comprised of a 3.8km swim, 180km bike ride, and a 42.2km run, Sanders had stumbled down a dangerous and destructive path. Growing up in a small town of Harrow, Ontario, just outside of Windsor, Sanders was a stand-out runner for his age. He broke a handful of records in Windsor-Essex County before high school. He was faster than any other boy his age at the provincial cross-country championships in 2009. During a time when Sanders was discovering himself, his success on the track turned into a chore. People expected him to run. It quickly became an obligation. “That was when I started to disengage from sport and think of myself as less and less of an athlete and more of a party guy,” Sanders says. So that’s what he did. When he got to university, substance abuse took complete control of his life. Athletics were no longer in the picture. And so, the two years of teetering towards rock bottom began. Over the two-year spiral, difficult moments paved the way to a six-month period where Sanders barely left his home. Living in isolation, his mind often wandered to unfathomable places.

Photography Mark Binks Fashion Editor Mark John Tripp Shot with Fujifilm GFX 50S Camera “The hardest part was waking up and staring at the roof. Having absolutely no reason or desire to get out of bed,” he says. “When you’ve got nothing to live for anymore, that’s rock bottom to me.” It wasn’t long after his midnight tombstone tour that Sanders decided to look up ‘Ironman triathlon.’ “If I devote myself to training for this thing, there’s just no way I can be feeling like this anymore at the end of this process,” he says. After ten months of staying mostly clean — there were a couple of brief relapses — and a ruthless conditioning schedule, Sanders completed his first Ironman in Louisville, Kentucky in August of 2010. The feeling of that accomplishment still motivates him today. “It was just this feeling of, ‘Wow, I achieved that.’ If I could do that, I could do anything,” he says. Since then, the Canadian has managed to put himself comfortably in the conversation with the top Ironman competitors in the world. His list of accomplishments is growing by the year. In 2013, he competed in and won his first professional race, defeating Andreas Raelert, who in 2011, set the world record for an Ironman. Over the last few years, Sanders has battled with one of the all-time great Ironman triathletes. He considers Olympic gold medalist and two-time Ironman world champion Jan Frodeno one of his heroes and even had a poster of him on the wall of his training room. And while he’s come close to overtaking Frodeno on the course, he has yet to break that barrier. The purpose of running for him is to test himself with every step. But finally beating his hero in October would be just an extra bit of motivation. “We run 26 miles side-by-side and then it comes down to a sprint finish,” he says. This moment plays on repeat in his head. It’s what he dreams of. “And obviously, I hope to win the race.” See the full article and photoshoot on dtkmen.com.

FAUSTO PUGLISI FOLLOWING HIS DREAMS

PASSION PERSONIFIED

His intensity and confidence radiates through the phone, electrifying my senses with his enchanting, free-spirited energy. The passionate voice that reverberates from Milan is immediately contagious, and as the conversation unfolds, it is impossible to resist the buoyancy of his character topped with immeasurable cultural depth. From vividly describing his youth in Southern Italy to dressing some of the world’s most iconic women, Fausto Puglisi is as punchy and luxuriously eclectic as his designs. As a longtime admirer of his work, my voice trembles with excitement and my cheeks flush with nerves as one of my most revered independent designers takes me on a journey through emotion, culture, creativity, and, of course, fashion. By Brenna Dixon

S

Fast forward through the upbeat ‘80s to around 1999, when Fausto decided to depart from his beloved country for America. As a “dreamer,” he confesses sketching clothing during school, designing his own shop, and constantly thinking about the creation of his own brand. As a naturally curious soul with eyes set on the horizon, Fausto followed his dream of “becoming big.” His decision to move to America was partly because he felt that it was “the place to be,” and that it was ultimately connected to not only fashion, but also pop culture. He finished school and was off, landing first in New York, then shifting south to Texas and eventually ending up in Los Angeles. Being intrigued with multiculturalism and infatuated with places that offered “opposition and contrast,” he felt that America being the birthplace of “rock n’ roll and pop culture” honoured his vision. Now living the lifestyle he always wanted, he felt that this newfound home immediately shaped his dreams. “It was fantastic; it was really amazing,” he recalls so intensely. While living in New York and working as a waiter in Tribeca, he recalls approaching infamous stylist Patti Wilson. Recognizing Wilson from her stellar style career, he asked to show her his collection. “I had only 15 pieces that were made in Sicily,” he divulges. Puglisi had brought those 15 intricately crafted garments in his suitcase all the way from Italy. Upon

tarting at the beginning, we travel back in time to Messina, Italy during the 1980s. Growing up in a small town, he explains the importance of dressing up as being a “part of respecting the people you meet,” for not only his town, but for a tradition heavily instilled in Italian culture. As a young boy, he describes seeing his impeccably dressed grandparents, stating that “they were always perfect.” His keen observations foreshadowed his creative future. The ‘80s were a historical moment when Italian designers were in the spotlight: think Giorgio Armani, Gianni Versace, Gianfranco Ferré, and Missioni, who Puglisi reveres as the “real rockstars.” Versace, in particular, Puglisi describes as a “real superstar” and an “absolute icon,” and was such an iconic designer and a direct source of inspiration for Fausto. Born in a country where fashion and beauty is culturally ingrained at birth, combined with that particular moment in time, he reveals it was as a child that he began to dream and “never had any doubt” since about becoming a fashion designer. Exuding confidence and determination, the young Puglisi was already informing his parents and friends of his future success: “I will be big – I will be a fashion designer,” he would announce. In hindsight, he describes his childhood realization of wanting to become a designer as being a “beautiful moment as a kid and as a dreamer.” Immersed and cultivated in a generation of such rich fashion inspiration, he emphasizes that his core values of family and loyalty are still as deeply instilled and equally important today as those of beauty and creation, which fed and continue to fuel his dreams.

...WHEN YOU believe IN A MESSAGE, AND WHEN YOUR message IS CLEAR, IT’S NORMAL THAT talented ARTISTS REACH OUT TO YOU TO CONNECT. review, Patti Wilson immediately proposed Puglisi to dress Whitney Huston at the Grammy Awards. America was a groundbreaking experience for the budding designer, who, following his first Grammy’s, was picked up by Designer Boutique Forty Five Ten in Dallas and influential shop Maxfield in LA, which was followed by a plethora of stylists and celebrities. After his success abroad, Fausto had every intention of remaining on American soil. While vacationing in Sicily, with a house rented and return ticket in hand, he received a call from Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabanna. The powerhouse behind Docle & Gabanna wanted him to stay in Italy and take part in their retail project Spiga 2, featuring young upcoming designers. Puglisi stayed and created a stunning collection for the shop, selling out in only two days. He remembers such “an incredible energy” of the whirlwind experience. The collection was about colour-blocking and exquisite embroidery during a time in fashion he illustrates as being all about “pale romantic black, white, and grey hues.” Diverging from the trends of the time, Fausto’s saturated contrasts were innovative and energetically refreshing.

his immense passion and his desire to communicate through creation is personified through his garments. “When you are strong, when you believe in a message, and when your message is clear, it’s normal that talented artists reach out to you to connect,” he describes of the boundless celebrities that have donned his name. Upholding his approach to fashion as an “art form and true expression,” he explains that to be a truly unique designer today, one has to “design each piece like an object as if creating a piece of furniture.” His philosophy maintains that “an object can become desirable,” and so his designs have for so many infamous women. His collections are fused with rich cultural influences and the unique blend of past and present references, drawing inspiration from “art, Sicily, and Ancient Roman/Greek culture.” Fausto’s adoration of ancient Roman and Greek culture stems beyond textbook definition. The two world’s philosophical approach and expression pertaining to external and internal beauty he describes as both being “suggestive, profound, and yet so superficial,” which Puglisi finds so stimulating. Feeling deeply connected to the past civilizations, he is constantly inspired by what gives him “emotion,” from “clothing to listening to music.” Driven by sentiment, he delivers an impactful message, which is naturally geared towards strong, independent, and confident women – those who don’t shy away from expression. “A strong personality is the most important – women are free to be whomever they want,” he affirms. He adds an insightful and inspiring note that “the only people who want to judge a woman are a misogynistic society, stupid men, repressed men, or her evil friends.” He’s a deep believer of female confidence and allowing liberty for women to express themselves freely in society. His devotion and support for female individuality, mind, body, and character are, first and foremost for Puglisi, a mindset and a connection that translates seamlessly into his astonishing work.

While displaying at Spiga 2, his designs caught the eye of style icon Anna Dello Russo who immediately exclaimed she “was in heaven” and that she “always wanted to wear Fausto.” Dello Russo did end up wearing Puglisi’s creations while frequenting fashion weeks, and, as one of the most photographed women on the fashion scene, it was of no surprise that she exposed Puglisi to the world. Due to the exposure via Dello Russo, Vogue Runway director Nicole Phelps contacted Puglisi about whether he would be presenting a collection in Milan, and so he did. After presenting his first shows, Puglisi’s team was solidified and he began to develop complete seasonal collections of his fashion brand, Fausto Puglisi. From Whitney Huston to Dello Russo, Fausto’s designs have caught the eye of women around the world. His ability to tap into a female’s fierce yet modern sexiness has drawn stars like Jennifer Lopez, Kendall Jenner, Madonna, and Niki Minaj, to name just a few. As a true artist, Puglisi feels that

With a life dedicated to constant creation, Puglisi confesses that he is “never not creating,” and believes that there is one thing he could not live without and something that he is truly connected to: emotion. In association with fashion, emotions are the driving force of our being; they are “connected to music, dreams, nightmares, and desires.” He adds that he wants to be able to “feel, create, and stimulate that sensitivity in others.” Feelings are a detrimental human component and essentially our essence of being, something that he could not imagine life without. Being constantly immersed in the formulation of new ideas, stimulation, and feeling, I asked Fausto what advice he would give to his younger self. He told us, “Fashion isn’t just about parties and celebrities. It’s about working hard day and night. It’s about keeping your ideas focused on your goal. You have to be a gladiator. Everyone is ready to judge, kill, and destroy you. You can never give up.” From a childhood dream, to dressing Madonna, Fausto Puglisi is an entrepreneur, visionary, creative mind, and, above all, fashion designer, who did what he set out to do as a child in Messina: he “made it big.”

She talks candidly to us about how she stays grounded and sane, her new movie, and more.

professional relationship like with him? How does he help you succeed and be the best you can be?

Well, depending on what 30 minutes of the day you’re talking to me: [it could be when] I want to rip his head off, or the next 30 minutes, [when] he’s my favourite person on planet Earth (laughs). So, it’s funny, we’re so close and we share so much, and the fact that we’re best friends and we also work together, it’s obviously sometimes a challenge, but I feel like our relationship is so based on a huge shot of love, that it makes everything else easier.

You started out as a television host, then went into reality TV, and now you’re staring in Denys Arcand’s new movie La Chute de L’empire Americain. Has it been difficult for you to adapt from one type of TV to the next? And how do you channel Are you and your new husband, Brandon Prust, such a variety of personalities in your acting and still having trouble finding time where you’re in the modelling? I think that it was tough for me to same city? How do you stay close and connected go from being a TV host to an actress, but despite the distance? Well, I feel like we love I took acting lessons for a good two and a half months. So that helped me do the transition and really get into character, but it was definitely a huge challenge, probably one of the biggest in my career, but it was such a fun process to create this character, and to see her come to life… And to work with Denys was insane - I mean, he’s such a living legend. He’s basically the pope of Quebec cinema. He accomplished so much - the only Canadian director who won an Oscar. It was really a blessing and an honour to get to work with him.

You’ve been very vocal about how your success is thanks to your agent, Patrick - what’s your

each other more when we’re not in the same city, actually (laughs). I’m joking, but we do long distance really well because when we’re separated, when we’re both in our cities, it’s time for us to be focused and to work as much as we can, and then when we’re together, it’s our us-time. So, I feel like we balance work and our relationship really well now.

How do you find time and energy for all of your business avenues and projects? What keeps you sane and grounded? It’s funny because my

therapist says, “The only way of staying sane when you’re on the verge of a mental break down, is fun.” So, it’s really important to balance working like crazy, but also make time to have fun with your friends, with your loved ones, and to still have a social life. Otherwise, you go batshit crazy.

You’ve also been very vocal for your love of Canadian designers – who are your top three Canadian designers and why? Well, obviously I have to say UNTTLD

because they’re so talented… They’ve dressed me on several occasions, including the CAFAs, but also they’re making a custom dress for me for the award on Sunday, and I cannot wait to wear that - it’s going to be a masterpiece. Second, I would say, Denis Gagnon, who I always loved. He also made my bridesmaid dresses for my wedding. And I really like Sid Neigum.

You were actually just crowned as social influencer of the year at CAFA this year! What has your experience with social media been like throughout the years? Well, it’s

been a big year for us because we launched the platform Maripier Morin back in November, and it was just so much work for Patrick and I, and Carolyn Brown who works with us. So, getting that title less than six months after we launched it was a huge accomplishment for us because it means that people got on board with us and are appreciative what we put together and all the effort behind the platform. I think it was a great recognition, and it was a good pat on the back for all of us.

You’ve mentioned it’s important to be authentic on social media and show to your young fans that you’re not perfect. Do you think all celebrities have an obligation to do similarly? I think that sometimes kids idolize

that life or that lifestyle, and you have to be as real and honest as possible, otherwise you can lose yourself in it, and project an image that is totally wrong. The kids have to know that it’s not always easy and you have to work like an absolute maniac to make it happen and that there’s a lot of effort behind it all, even if it doesn’t look like it… And you have to be careful also of what you post and what you do and your art direction because you are an influence on kids and you want to teach them right.

In this photoshoot, you embody various strong women icons from the ‘60s. Who are your strong women icons that inspire you in your day-to-day life? My mom, obviously; she’s not a personality, but she is one herself. And she’s a great example. She raised us - me and my brothers - to be proud and strong and hardworking. So, I think she’s one of the most powerful women I know.

Is being a celebrity in your 30s any different than being one in your 20s? I think I have a lot more self-con-

fidence. I doubt myself a lot less. I think that being in my thirties, you have that liberty of not always questioning myself: “Am I doing the right thing?”, “Am I in the right place?”, “Do I belong there?” - all these questions that I was constantly asking myself when I was in my twenties. Now, I have my eyes on the prize, and I think it would be dangerous for anyone to get in my way because I’m really focused and dedicated. And not in the way that I would step on people to get where I want to, but in the way that I feel unstoppable.

MUSIC

BORNS

INSTANT CLASSIC

Michigan-born Garrett Borns, known to the world as BØRNS, has entered his Blue Period. In his sophomore album, he is exploring themes of youth and loss of innocence driven by hypnotic synth-beats that will have you up and dancing all night long. Interview and Text by Akeem Johnson-Pierre & Mayillah Ezekiel Your album is finally out, and you’ve recently started your tour. How does it feel to see your vision come to life? Does the release of this second album feel any different from the first? Yeah, it felt a lot different! I didn’t

know if I was ever going to be able to put out another album. It felt like I was playing the first record for so long that I wondered, “What’s going to happen after this?” I really wanted to make something that was my headspace at the time, and sort of a stamp of a moment in time. When you make an album, the sounds always remind you of what you were doing at that time. I was in LA for the whole creation of the record - I was living in this noisy neighbourhood with Chihuahuas barking all the time, ice cream trucks, Mariachi bands, and all these sounds that I loved, so I wanted to put that whimsicality into it. But long story short, it does feel a lot different and it feels really good!

108

Did the move to LA affect the sound of your music? I think so! Having sunshine all the time and palm trees… It definitely affected my first record for sure, because I was just so enamoured by [it], but I think the second record was more affected by all my travels with touring and wanting to make something a little more intricate. I feel like I grew a lot as a person and as a performer, so I wanted to show my growth as a songwriter too. How did the Lana del Rey feature come about? How was it working with her on the title track?

I’ve been a fan of her music for a long time and we sort of met virtually. She mentioned that she loved one of my songs on Instagram. We casually talked about collaborating, but I wanted something to naturally happen. I was working with her sister on a lot of the photography for the album. Chuck [Grant] is an amazing photographer and we’re also close friends, so [Lana] heard some of my music through her and mentioned that she would love to be on it.

Were you going for an Adam-and-Eve-in-the-garden feel, since the album does play with the themes of lost innocence?

Sometimes, when you’re making something, you don’t really know what it looks like or sounds like until you step back from it and look at it in its entirety. I didn’t really even realize those themes were in it. In my neighbourhood, there were all of these beautiful Mexican-looking murals of the Virgin of Guadalupe, with light emanating from her. I was always seeing them when I was driving to the studio and I really loved it. I had “Blue Madonna” written down as the title, and then the album became what it is today.

I do is so scatter-brained and doesn’t have a through-line. Again, I try to make as many sounds as I can and then try to put them into a playlist. I never arrange the songs until I finish them. I was in San Francisco with my producer and good friend, Tommy English, when we finally put all the songs in order and listened to it as a whole. It was wild! So, cohesiveness is always an accident for me. I’m glad people think it’s cohesive… For me, I’m like, “Aw man, none of these songs go together.”

As much as you take your production and songwriting to the next level, Blue Madonna is very much a cohesive project. How did you achieve this? I always feel like everything

I ALWAYS FEEL LIKE everything I DO IS SO SCATTER-BRAINED AND DOESN’T HAVE A THROUGH-LINE.

What makes better music, new love or heartbreak? Oh wow,

well both are very distracting and there’s a fine line between those two. I feel like new love is like a fantasy… I can write songs about the idea of fantasies really, really easily. You know when you meet someone, have a connection and then when you leave each other, you have all these thoughts like, “What if I said this?” or “What if we did this?” or “Man, did I completely mess that up?” You build all these things in your mind and that’s what I usually write about.

You put your all into creating Blue Madonna, what has Blue Madonna given you in return? I wanted to put some-

thing out that people had to figure out, and I know a lot of people enjoyed the first record! I didn’t want to put out anything too obvious. It was a lot of challenging myself with trying to write different things that I’ve never heard before and I wanted to play the whole album top to bottom at shows because I thought it would be kind of different. It seems like, as we’re touring and as people are getting to know the music more, people are connecting to the different songs. It’s pretty amazing to me!

How does it feel now to perform some of your older songs?

We’re so comfortable with those songs that we can just dig into them so hard and play them so effortlessly. My voice can just hit those notes without even thinking because we’ve played them so much. New songs can be a bit daunting sometimes because before performing, I probably only sang them in the studio once.

How much of a role does fashion play in your life? I’ve always looked at it like, “What kind of character do I want to play?” Since I was very young, I’ve always dressed into different characters, and now that I’m performing, what you’re wearing is going to affect the way you walk, sing, and talk to people. If I’m wearing a suit, I’m going to sing and walk so differently than if I’m wearing something flow-y. I love all things Bowie and Prince – I love those androgynous looks. Alessandro (Gucci’s creative director) has been so sweet to me. I love his imagination and what he’s done for Gucci. You’re known for being into wellness, so, health-wise, what are some of your tour essentials? I try to eat as clean as

possible, especially when I travel! Having fresh fruits and vegetables is important. I eat granola with chia seeds and almond milk in the morning. Just being able to sustain yourself is important. I love matcha tea! You got to get your B-vitamins in because that’s the first thing to go, so you have to replenish them!

LEBUA BANGKOK Ultimate opulence

Stepping inside the Lebua Hotel in Bangkok is a world of its own, where every detail has been meticulously chosen for you to experience the ultimate lavish stay. Even with the huge worldwide hospitality boom in the past decade, this luxury hotel, located in the Si Lom neighborhood of Bangkok, has found ways to establish itself as the top high-end hospitality location in a city renowned as much for its affordable street food as it is for its parade of five-star hotels. By Marie-Ève Venne

The first time I looked around at the Tower Club at Lebua in Bangkok, one of the most luxurious hotels in the city, I automatically understood why they keep priding themselves on exclusivity and high-quality service. It is the only luxury hotel in Bangkok which is all-suite and I had the immense pleasure of staying inside all-club, with breathtaking the Tower Club’s Luxury Suite, which includes views of Bangkok and three private balconies, a dining room, a the Chao Phraya. There fully-equipped kitchen, a living room, a king are two different hotels at bedroom, an immense bathroom, and – as if Lebua. There is Lebua at that wasn’t enough – its own massage room State Tower, which is on where you can get all the treatments offered the lower floors, and then at the hotel’s spa without having to leave the there is the Tower Club comfort of your room. You can’t replicate that at Lebua, which is on the kind of luxury. But what strikes you the most as 51st - 59th floors. you experience Lebua is the dedication of the employees working there. They make you feel as if their sole purpose is to make sure every minute of your stay runs smoothly, providing everything you might need or want, even the things you didn’t previously know you desired. As an Occidental, that devotion to your comfort might appear overwhelming at first, but you quickly find yourself enjoying all the attention to the point of wondering once back home why every person who crosses your path can’t remember your name or how you take your coffee.

Lebua Hotels and Resorts has a handful of properties in India and New Zealand but is operating everything from the Bangkok’s State Tower building. On top of the all-suites hotel are three luxury restaurants – Breeze and Sirocco, fittingly located outside, and the indoors Mezzaluna. They also have Alfresco 64, a Chivas whisky bar with the highest outdoor terrace, along with owning Flûte à Perrier-Jouët, the highest outdoor champagne bar in the world. To establish their partnership with the hotel, Chivas has even released a special blend offered exclusively at the hotel for an impressive $7,000 a bottle. If you feel like saving a little, you can order a glass for the modest amount of $2,000. As a whisky lover myself, I obviously had to try the exclusive blend. Led by master blender Colin Scott, the Chivas Exclusive Lebua Blend was created by laying down the finest whisky – distilled in 1985 or earlier – in a selection of casks including American Oak. Along with the sherry character of a single cask, the blend has rich fruity notes and smooth flavor. This results in a drink quite addictive that you can only enjoy at the hotel, adding even more feeling of exclusivity. “Lebua is a marketing company that happens to be in the hotel business,” explains Deepak Ohri, CEO of the Lebua. “We have to sell the experience.” Partnerships like the ones struck with Chivas and Perrier-Jouët are just the beginning. Ohri has plans to launch more special releases, including a variety of wines through partnerships with other leading brands, which will also be exclusive to Lebua. At his properties in India, Lebua offers different spots to dine. “We elevate the experience by giving our guests a different spot to dine every night,” says Ohri. “Our guests won’t want to eat in the same restaurant every night, so they may sit on a terrace one night or we might create a circle of lanterns on another night and have them dine inside it.”

The true star and biggest highlight of staying at the Lebua is definitely all about having the chance to experience Mezzaluna. The fine dining restaurant doesn’t only offer a very special atmosphere with a 180° view, the food is also an experience in itself. The menu is a fixed price for seven courses and the chef de cuisine, Ryuki Kawasaki, has worked at Michelin-star restaurants across Europe and the U.S. before joining the Lebua family. Luckily, my stay was coinciding with a 12-hour-long anniversary celebration of the hotel’s two Michelin stars, which included a collection of French-inspired dishes that brought every guest on a true culinary journey made of exciting flavour combinations. The true mastermind behind all this deployment of opulence is the CEO of Lebua, Deepak Ohri. In 2003, Ohri was the first employee to join Challenge Hospitality Co., Ltd., where he believed he could establish a luxury brand “that will put India on the luxury map,” he recalls. Ohri was responsible for opening the Dome restaurants including Sirocco, Mezzaluna, and Distil Bar in Bangkok at the Lebua hotel at the State Tower. By 2005, more than half of all private jets landing at the Bangkok airport were his customers. Challenge Hospitality entered the hotel management business when it took over management of the Lebua hotel at State Tower in 2006. One year later, Challenge Hospitality was re-branded as Lebua Hotels & Resorts Co., Ltd. and Ohri was appointed its Chief Executive. Ever since, Ohri has used his truly unique vision to sell the Lebua dream to customers. “The more a guest stays with us, the more we can customize their experience, and the more we can share with them news and happenings at the hotel via personal notes and targeted high-end communications. We want every guest to feel welcome at our properties, but our repeat guests offer a wonderful opportunity for us to customize their stays. You can’t experience somewhere else in the world what you experience at the Lebua, and that is why people keep coming back.” And trust me, you can’t wait to go back.

CHANEL’s

Runway Triumph

This is the happiest sort of return: the passing back through a familiar and beloved territory towards a new horizon, with power and heart. This collection walked itself through the Elbphilarmonie last night, swinging and easy and sassy and grounded, with wit and weight, devoid of pretension or apology.

— Tilda Swinton TILDA SWINTON

It is the enigmatic dreamscape of Hamburg that Karl Lagerfeld and Chanel have brought us for the 2017 Métiers d’art show. It’s a journey back to the future of the city and seaport, which has resisted and survived the destruction of fires, flooding, and disease over the centuries, only to rise each time like a phoenix from the rubble to become the independent, international, modern metropolis, which the designer is here to celebrate : Germany’s Gateway to the World. Text: Back to the Future / De Hamborger Veermaster

A

wooden fishing boat takes a small party of guests including Scottish performer Tilda Swinton and partner German painter Sandro Kopp alongside French actresses Anna Mouglalis and Marine Vacth across the churning grey waters of the Elbe toward the soaring sail-like silhouette of the Elbphilharmonie whose shimmering convex and concave curves seem sculpted and moulded by the abrasive Baltic wind. As the boat crew serenades us, this time with real rather than imagined sea shanties, we look toward the HafenCity, Europe’s largest urban development, which will eventually include designs by Rem Koolhaas and Renzo Piano and whose jewel in the crown is the Elbphilharmonie designed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, which sits majestically atop an old maritime warehouse.

KRISTEN STEWART

I loved the references to the graphic geometry of the containers transported on the ships and to the red- brick color of the Gothic industrial and administrative buildings. I loved the maritime influence on the men’s and women’s peacoats and the storm flap and sailor collar details on coats and jackets but they never felt nostalgic. The Elbphilarmonie is barely one year old but it already feels like a bridge betweeen the past and the future of the city.

— Marine Vacth

MARINE VACTH

It is a potent symbol of the past and future of the city, its multi-story nineteenth century Neo-Gothic red-brick undercarriage supporting an amorphous concrete and glass structure which recalls both the ghostly vestiges of an ancient vessel and its digitally-rendered reflection. It is the perfect portal to Lagerfeld’s own Hanseatic fantasy. So let the show begin….

ACE TEE

- It is a very emotional experience to be in the city where Mr. Lagerfeld was born. Of course, one has a sense of the city’s past, but the show is also about the new and the future.

— Nana Komatsu

NANA KOMATSU

Once upon a time, Hamburg hosted Brahms and the Beatles, and Oscar Fetras had its people waltzing to his “Mondnacht auf der Alster,” but this evening maverick maestro Oliver Coates boots his computer, balances his cello on his thigh, and conducts a symphony of immersive soundwaves which envelope the designer’s creations as they spiral around the walkways and balconies of the Elbphilharmonie’s main auditorium, swirling down into the vortex of watery lights below. And there reflected in the weaves and waves, we see once more the weft and warp of the rivers and canals which crisscross the city, the brick-red geometries of the ancient warehouse facades, and the stacked containers which line the port. A textile lattice mirrors the digitally rendered interior carapace of the state of the art auditorium itself. Self-sufficient peacoats with woolen Fiddler caps and heavy cable knits echo the songs of the drunken and drowned sailors, and the dense grey mist of a fitted ‘tailleur’ parts to reveal the elegant black-sequined sweep of the fathomless night sky and all the fabric of the city and its dreams, both past and future, real and imagined.
