UNMAS focuses on the achievement of MONUSCO mandated objectives under the following Missions pillars:

1. Protection of Civilians UNMAS mitigates the threat posed by ERW to civilians before, during and after MONUSCO Force operations against illegal armed groups through Explosive Ordnance Disposal activities and risk awareness. UNMAS is also on emergency standby to react to ERW that pose an immediate threat to civilians and to conduct rapid assessment and clearance as requested by national authorities and civilians.

2. Stabilization In order to facilitate MONUSCO Force operations against illegal armed groups, UNMAS destroys obsolete or surrendered weapons and ammunition and provides technical advice to DDR on the safe handling and storage of weapons in their operations.

3. Support to democratic governance and institutional reforms In support of the MONUSCO exit strategy and SCR 2277, UNMAS encourages national institutions to increase weapons, ammunition and stockpile safety to reduce the risks of misappropriation, theft and misuse. UNMAS supports security state actors through training in safe weapons and ammunition management, and the provision of safe storage solutions in the Mission’s area.

IN 2016 / 2017 For the 2016/2017 fiscal year, UNMAS received USD 2,8 million to provide EOD Support to the Mission. UNMAS is managing further weapons; ammunition, stockpile management and EOD support to the Mission through an extra USD 999,400 MONUSCO underspend from FY 2015/2016 with all funds already committed.
