It is always a pleasure to share the Charles E. Smith Life Communities Annual Report and showcase the accomplishments of the past year. This year’s report is special because it looks back and celebrates 110 years of service to the older adults in our community. Whether achieved during the last century, the last 10 years, or the last 12 months, our successes are a testament to the ongoing support of generous donors, dedicated volunteers and lay leaders, and our hard-working team members. In 2019, more than 900 volunteers donated 29,000 hours of time and more than 4,406 donors contributed $3,239,091 to our mission. In 2019, Lenore England established the Jonathan S. and Patricia G. England CESLC Innovation Fund and in 2020 pledged $10 million to endow this valuable resource. Our volunteer-led annual Guardian Campaign raised more than $1 million. Numerous other gifts and grants enabled us to establish myriad life-enriching programs on campus, including a Ballroom Dance Program at Revitz House and the Opening Minds through Art and Music & Memory programs at Hebrew Home of Greater Washington. We are proud that, in 2019, we again received strong recognition as a top provider in numerous national and local surveys. We were included as one of Newsweek’s Best Nursing Homes 2020 among a field of 15,000 nationwide and achieved 2019-2020 Best Short-Term Rehabilitation Center status in U.S. News and World Report. Washington Jewish Week named us a Best Independent Living, Best Assisted Living, Best Alzheimer’s/Dementia Care and Best 55+ Community. With a remarkable 2019 behind us, we began 2020 with a strategic focus to build upon the many innovative programs that contribute to a life-affirming environment for older adults. Then the world changed abruptly. As we prepare this report for publication, we reflect on the ongoing public health emergency that has challenged us in countless ways. We responded swiftly to the COVID-19 crisis to protect the safety and emotional well-being of those we serve and our team. Decade after decade, back through our history, we have weathered many storms. In fact, Hebrew Home moved into the row house on M Street, our first location in D.C., only four years before the 1918 influenza pandemic raged across the globe. Then, as now, our commitment to our mission and values strengthened us. We are confident that the strong foundation built over 110 years, together with your unwavering support, will enable us to sustain an outstanding community where empathy and engagement empower those we serve to live their best life. With gratitude,
Eric G. Meyers

Opening Minds Through Art (OMA) and MUSIC & MEMORY Programs Launch Two programs bring therapeutic arts and music to residents at Hebrew Home of Greater Washington. The culturally rich programs provide an ideal platform to build relationships between youth volunteers and older adults with dementia and other cognitive and physical challenges. The programs were implemented thanks to a three-year grant funded by an anonymous foundation and administered by the Association of Jewish Aging Services (AJAS).
